Job 22

1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

2 Can a man be profitable unto God, as he that is wise may be profitable unto himself?

3 Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that thou art righteous? or is it gain to him, that thou makest thy ways perfect?

4 Will he reprove thee for fear of thee? will he enter with thee into judgment?

5 Is not thy wickedness great? and thine iniquities infinite?

6 For thou hast taken a pledge from thy brother for nought, and stripped the naked of their clothing.

7 Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, and thou hast withholden bread from the hungry.

8 But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; and the honourable man dwelt in it.

9 Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

10 Therefore snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubleth thee;

11 Or darkness, that thou canst not see; and abundance of waters cover thee.

12 Is not God in the height of heaven? and behold the height of the stars, how high they are!

13 And thou sayest, How doth God know? can he judge through the dark cloud?

14 Thick clouds are a covering to him, that he seeth not; and he walketh in the circuit of heaven.

15 Hast thou marked the old way which wicked men have trodden?

16 Which were cut down out of time, whose foundation was overflown with a flood:

17 Which said unto God, Depart from us: and what can the Almighty do for them?

18 Yet he filled their houses with good things: but the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

19 The righteous see it, and are glad: and the innocent laugh them to scorn.

20 Whereas our substance is not cut down, but the remnant of them the fire consumeth.

21 Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.

22 Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart.

23 If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacles.

24 Then shalt thou lay up gold as dust, and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks.

25 Yea, the Almighty shall be thy defence, and thou shalt have plenty of silver.

26 For then shalt thou have thy delight in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face unto God.

27 Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows.

28 Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways.

29 When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person.

30 He shall deliver the island of the innocent: and it is delivered by the pureness of thine hands.

  1. In the NKJV this chapter is captioned “Eliphaz Accuses Job of Wickedness”. Many will try to accuse and proclaim, when in fact they really don’t have a clue. Remember 1 Peter 3:13-18 MSG “If with heart and soul you’re doing good, do you think you can be stopped? Even if you suffer for it, you’re still better off. Don’t give the opposition a second thought. Through thick and thin, keep your hearts at attention, in adoration before Christ, your Master. Be ready to speak up and tell anyone who asks why you’re living the way you are, and always with the utmost courtesy. Keep a clear conscience before God so that when people throw mud at you, none of it will stick. They’ll end up realizing that they’re the ones who need a bath. It’s better to suffer for doing good, if that’s what God wants, than to be punished for doing bad. That’s what Christ did definitively: suffered because of others’ sins, the Righteous One for the unrighteous ones. He went through it all—was put to death and then made alive—to bring us to God.”

  2. 2 Can a man be profitable unto God, as he that is wise may be profitable unto himself?
    ““Can a person do anything to help God? Can even a wise person be helpful to him?”
    ‭‭Job‬ ‭22:2‬ ‭NLT‬‬
    Romans 3:21-23 KIV
    21But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; 22Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: 23For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

  3. 18 Yet he filled their houses with good things: but the counsel of the wicked is far from me.19 The righteous see it, and are glad: and the innocent laugh them to scorn.

    God fills the righteous with good things even when storms surround them. Just think about it when a heavy storm is moving through our area, the first place we want to go is home or inside. The storm may beat up our house on the outside. We hear it yet are we are not harmed. We find peace inside because we are sheltered from within the home.

    We will face trials but we have to learn to find peace from within and endure. Pray read and trust God and I can’t tell you that it won’t hurt but I can tell you He won’t leave you.

    27 Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows.
    28 Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways.

    It’s time to decree something!

  4. 5 Is not thy wickedness great? and thine iniquities infinite?

    6 For thou hast taken a pledge from thy brother for nought, and stripped the naked of their clothing.

    7 Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, and thou hast withholden bread from the hungry.

    We will always have critics, always have someone who will try to justify their righteousness by condemning others. We shouldn’t be discouraged or surprised by this. We are judged by God’s grace alone. Others opinions of our duties to God should not be affected by them.

  5. 25. Yea, the Almighty shall be thy defence, and thou shalt have plenty of silver.

    Psalm 59:16-17
    16. But I will sing of thy power; yea, I will sing aloud of thy mercy in the morning: for thou hast been my defence and refuge in the day of my trouble.

    17. Unto thee, O my strength, will I sing: for God is my defence, and the God of my mercy.

  6. Job 22:12-14 (NLT)
    12) God is so great – higher than the heavens, higher than the farthest star.
    13) But you reply, That’s why God can’t see what I am doing! How can he judge through the thick darkness?
    14) For thick clouds swirl about him, and he cannot see us. He is way up there, walking on the vault of heaven.

    Many a man believes this way, that God is so far away up in heaven that he can’t see what their doing, so they do what they want to.
    But God does see and knows all things that we are doing, and nothing is hid before His eyes, and one day we shall be brought into account of the things we have done, whether they be good or whether they be bad.

    Remember: God is Watching!

  7. English Revised Version
    22::21 Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.

    Jobs friend gave some good advice here yet he speaks to Job his friend as if Job didn’t even know God. Consider the fact it was God who said have you considered my servant Job to the devil. Good is not always going to come about because we live for God. I only have the hope that God is always there through the good times and the terrible times.
    He will never leave us nor forsake us even when it’s seems you are at the lowest times of your life. Rest assure God is faithful and Joy will come in the morning! Just keep on keeping on! Someone else around you has it worse than you ever have and when you find them you can say praise God and share how God is helping you to overcome, how He can bring them throughout! I’m preaching to myself here:).

  8. ““God is so great—higher than the heavens, higher than the farthest stars. But you reply, ‘That’s why God can’t see what I am doing! How can he judge through the thick darkness?”
    ‭‭Job‬ ‭22:12-13‬ ‭NLT‬‬

    Perception. How do you see your God?

  9. 27 Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows.
    28 Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways.

    When you have the faith and the works, that’s when God can bless. When we work for our blessings. God can do many great things. He is my God,my trust is all in him.

  10. Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

    No one is sinless, but Jesus died and rose again so that we can have eternal life.

  11. 22 Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart.

    We need to study and read the word of God every day so that his word can be in our hearts. So when someone approaches and asks us about our faith, we know how to respond and what scriptures to give them.

  13. 21 “Submit to God, and you will have peace;
    then things will go well for you.
    22 Listen to his instructions,
    and store them in your heart.

    Amen!!! So true because when we do wrong the first thing we do is run and hide just like Adam and Eve did. Thank you Lord because I have your peace in my heart. Help me daily Lord follow your commands and glorify your name Jesus!!! Help me pure so sinners can be rescued, so sinners can be saved and live for you. Help me Lord, purify me daily Lord!!!! I don’t want to stand on day of judgement and you show me all the things I’ve couldve done if I would’ve just obeyed and listened. Help me Lord!!!!

    29 If people are in trouble and you say, ‘Help them,’
    God will save them.
    30 Even sinners will be rescued;
    they will be rescued because your hands are pure.”

  14. ““Give in to God, come to terms with him and everything will turn out just fine. Let him tell you what to do; take his words to heart. Come back to God Almighty and he’ll rebuild your life. Clean house of everything evil. Relax your grip on your money and abandon your gold-plated luxury. God Almighty will be your treasure, more wealth than you can imagine.”
    ‭‭Job‬ ‭22:21-25‬ ‭MSG‬‬

    Turn back to God and be restored.

  15. 5 Is not thy wickedness great? and thine iniquities infinite?

    Eliphaz was like the devil. He was a accuser of the brethren. Instead of encouraging Job he discouraged him and no doubt made him feel worse. We must strive to be a encouragement and strength to our brothers and sisters and help them make it through hard times because we are our brothers/sisters keeper.

  16. “Submit to God, and you will have peace; then things will go well for you. Listen to his instructions, and store them in your heart. If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored— so clean up your life.
    Job 22:21‭-‬23 NLT

    You telling me if i submit myself to God. That i can have peace. I found that to be ture
    Submit= sy give in
    Which mean when you submit to something giving in
    You putting away your pride he or she is over me he.
    For the Lord’s sake, submit to all human authority—whether the king as head of state,
    1 Peter 2:13 NLT

  17. iLove to Go Blog

    4Is it because you’re so pious that he accuses you
    and brings judgment against you?
    5No, it’s because of your wickedness!
    There’s no limit to your sins.

    Wow, look at Job’s friend straight up accuse him of being wicked. It is very foolish for us to judge folks and for us to assume the worst. While it is easy to fall into this trap, I want to focus on the attitude of Job. It would have been easy for Job to have fallen into a pity party of feeling unworthy and feeling guilty, but Job stood strong and overcame all the accusations that were thrown his way.

  18. Verses 21-30, I couldn’t pick just one or two because they are all words we must heed and apply to our lives today. Submit to God, surrender all you are and all you have – help us today father!

  19. 13 But you reply, ‘That’s why God can’t see what I am doing!
        How can he judge through the thick darkness?
    14 For thick clouds swirl about him, and he cannot see us.

    This reminds me of the song lyrics “omnipotent, omnipresent, soon coming King, Your Alpha, Omega, Lord of everything;”

    GOD KNOWS ALL THINGS!

    21 “Submit to God, and you will have peace;
    then things will go well for you.
    22 Listen to his instructions,
    and store them in your 23 If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored—
    so clean up your life.

    This is the prescription of how to get your life back on track!
    Step by step:
    Submit to God
    Listen and know the Word for that is our instruction book!

  20. Job 22:1-4 Then Eliphaz the Teman it answered and said, can a man be profitable unto God, as he that is wise may be profitable unto himself? Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that thou art righteous? Or is it gain to him that thou makest thy ways perfect? Will he reprove thee for fear of thee? Will he enter with thee into judgment?

    Eliphaz considers that because Job complained so much of his affliction he thought God was unjust in afflicting him; but Job was far from thinking so. What Eliphaz says, is unjustly applied to Job but it is very true that, when God does us good it is not because he is indebted to us. Man’s piety is not profit to God no gains. The gains of religion to men are to finite greater than the losses ofnit. God is sovreign, who gives no account of his conduct but he is perfectly wise, just, faithful, good and merciful. He approves the likenesses of his own holiness and delights in the fruits of his Spirit; he accepts the services of the humble be liver while he rejects the proud claim of the self-confident.

  21. 3 Is it any advantage to the Almighty if you are righteous? Would it be any gain to him if you were perfect? 4 Is it because you’re so pious that he accuses you and brings judgment against you?

    Reading the NLT version, I had no idea what ‘pious’ was.
    Pious: marked by or showing reverence for deity and devotion to divine worship; showing loyal reverence for a person or thing.

    Some may feel so righteous they feel they no longer really need God as much. They may in turn say, “I’m doing something for you Lord, you need me to do your work”. We must be careful no to be so arrogant, that we get to the point of not needing God in our lives.

    We have to always realize we need God, and God can do without us. Don’t ever think your perfect and too righteous for God. Humble yourself to God and be a servant to him and others.

  22. 21 Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.

    22 Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart.

    Jesus will become to us everything that we will allow Him to be. It is us who opens our spirit and closes it to Him. If we give Him opportunity He will rule and reign in our lives and be our LORD. But He is not going to push His way in nor pry His way in. He wants openness and communication with those He has created. He wants relationship. Relationship knows that everything will not always go the way we think or want, but that He will be with us regardless.

  23. JOB 22:22
    22 Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart
    Ps 119
    1How blessed are those whose way is blameless,
    Who walk in the law of the LORD.
    2How blessed are those who observe His testimonies,
    Who seek Him with all their heart.
    3They also do no unrighteousness;
    They walk in His ways.
    4 You have ordained Your precepts,
    That we should keep them diligently.
    5 Oh that my ways may be established
    To keep Your statutes!
    6 Then I shall not be ashamed
    When I look upon all Your commandments.
    7 I shall give thanks to You with uprightness of heart,
    When I learn Your righteous judgments.
    8 I shall keep Your statutes;
    Do not forsake me utterly!

    Psalm 40:8
    I delight to do Your will, O my God; Your Law is within my heart.
    Your word have I hid in my heart, that I might not sin against thee

  24. 28 Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways.

    Some say there is light at the end of the tunnel. If you decree and declare that God is with you and that the fire you used to have in the altar is still there then pray your way to victory because nothing will take your joy away unless you allow it. We are not perfect yes we are sinners. God died for me and lives in us don’t forget that greater is he that is in us than he that’s in the world. We are overcomers I decree and declare victory.

  25. 12 Is not God in the height of heaven? and behold the height of the stars, how high they are!

    13 And thou sayest, How doth God know? can he judge through the dark cloud?

    14 Thick clouds are a covering to him, that he seeth not; and he walketh in the circuit of heaven.

    How big is your view of God? Eliphaz thought Jobs view of God was too small and he criticized Job for thinking God was too far away to care about him. God is never far away from where we are, he cares for us deeper than any other person could ever think of. Many people take sin lightly because they think God is too far away to see them in all they do. But God is all around us and sin is not to be taken lightly!

  26. Proverbs 3:1,2
    My son do not forget my law , But let your heart keep my commands;
    For length of days and long life
    And peace they will add to you.

  27. Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.(Job 22:21 KJV)

    I learned that being submitted to God is arranging ourselves under the command of a divine viewpoint rather than to live according to our old ways of life, it is a process of surrending our own will to that of our father’s will. The way to have peace in our lives is first and foremost peace with God, it is the state of affairs in which our God instead of being against us is for us. If we submit ourselves to God and let him be our author and finisher of our faith we will see more achieving and goals that we’ve been wanting to see God himself plan in our lives.

  28. “Submit to God and be at peace with him; in this way prosperity will come to you. Accept instruction from his mouth and lay up his words in your heart.
    Job 22:21‭-‬22 NIV

    In a society where submission is a weakness and to accept instruction is not very popular because of man’s pride. God tells us that if we submit and accept His Instructions we will have peace and eternal life.

  29. Eliphaz offers so excellent advice, which is supported by the Word (2Ch 7:14). When sinners want to mend their relationships with God, the only way is through humble repentance and and fervent obedience. Too bad his theology is misapplied. He traces Jobs present suffering to his sin, but God has declared Job blameless (Job 1:1). Once again one of Jobs friends display his ignorance about how God works. Eliphaz’s assumptions is that an obedient person will be rewarded in his life, but such is not always the case. Jesus, himself is the ultimate example for us of a righteous man whose obedience lead to his death (Php 2:8). Sometimes God has to make, something good die in us to finally make us grow. Job was,a great man but the will of God would only work to take Job out of his current blessing situation into a dying one to breathe new life into it, giving him twice as much as he had before and a greater revelation of who God is in his life.

  30. 2 Can a man be profitable unto God, as he that is wise may be profitable unto himself?23 If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacles.
    Were soldiers for God. Fighting the enemy day by day reaching our hands out to help others get on the right track. God is so good and he shows me everyday.

  31. 25 Yea, the Almighty shall be thy defence, and thou shalt have plenty of silver.

    God’s hand of protection is what keeps us. The devil can’t get to us as long as we keep God in the forefront of our lives.

  32. Job 22:28 Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee : And the light shall shine upon thy ways.

    It shall be established – Thy purposes shall not be disappointed, but ratified by God. And in all thy counsels and actions God shall give thee the light of his direction and governance, and of comfort and success.

  33. 22 Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart.

    23 If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacles.

    To me these scriptures are talking about repentance and restoration! Repent and let God start to move in our lives, as soon as we ask him he will forgive, then things will start to happen, blessings, trials, overcoming and blessings, he will use us and love us, and if we stumble and if we fall REPENT get back up and ask for forgiveness! He is an awesome loving God and He is the one true God!

  34. 2 Can a man be profitable unto God, as he that is wise may be profitable unto himself?

    3 Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that thou art righteous? or is it gain to him, that thou makest thy ways perfect?

    4 Will he reprove thee for fear of thee? will he enter with thee into judgment?

    5 Is not thy wickedness great? and thine iniquities infinite?

    Can I be profitable in God? There is profit in knowledge: Job’s friends feared what they didn’t understand. Eliphaz called Job wicked, but even through it all Job still trusted in the Lord. Again; can I be profitable in God? It is all how you look at it. Yes there are those that have wealth, but do they truly know God. I can have the biggest, richest church in the world and still fall short of the glory of God. I could know the word of God forward and backward and still not be in the glory of His presence. God knows through dark clouds, clear days the heart of every man, woman that is on this planet. I thank you Lord for giving me the desire to be a soul winner and removing the wickedness from my mind……..Thank you Jesus….Amen!!!!

  35. Acquaint now yourself with Him [agree with God and show yourself to be conformed to His will] and be at peace; by that [you shall prosper and great] good shall come to you. Receive, I pray you, the law and instruction from His mouth and lay up His words in your heart. [Ps. 119:11.]
    Job 22:21‭-‬22 AMPC

    Sin always robs you of peace and makes you run from God. Repenting and turning to him again gives you back the peace that a life of sin and rebellion stole. There is only one way to have true peace in your life. Come to Jesus. He is the prince of peace.

  36. 17 Which said unto God, Depart from us: and what can the Almighty do for them?

    All to often we find ourselves asking the same question, “What can God do for me?”, Instead of what can I do for you, Jesus?

  37. Job 22:2-3 “Can a man be of benefit to God? Can even a wise person benefit him? What pleasure would it give the Almighty if you were righteous? What would he gain if your ways were blameless?

    Proverbs 11:20
    The perverse in heart are an abomination to the LORD, But the blameless in their walk are His delight.

    So Eliphaz was wrong! God does delight in the blameless. Job had it right, he had everything together. He had no clue God was allowing all of what was happening. But what Eliphaz was trying to insinuate was that, there had to being something wrong.

  38. Job 22:21-23 (MSG)
    21 “Give in to God, come to terms with him
    and everything will turn out just fine.
    22 Let him tell you what to do;
    take his words to heart.
    23 Come back to God Almighty
    and he’ll rebuild your life.
    Clean house of everything evil.

    Put your life in the hands of the builder. He knows just what to do to make you want you need to be.

  39. Eliphar had a list of acussations against Job. That was not a wise thing to do.Unwise words could lead to the judgment of GOD and the fires of hell…. Not only for the one with the offended spirit, but also for the one guilty of using idle words.

  40. 29 When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person.

    It’s important that we leave our pride when God is dealing with us. Our pride and how much we harden our hearts resisting God can lead us to destruction.

  41. Salvation cannot be earned.

    “Are any of us strong enough to give God a hand, or smart enough to give him advice? So what if you were righteous—would God Almighty even notice? Even if you gave a perfect performance, do you think he’d applaud?

    Oh but for the grace of God. While God is holy, we are sometimes spiritually lazy. Only holy people belong with a holy God in heaven, but, while we may recognize the problem, we don’t want to be bothered. We do not seem to be able to put forth the effort to be truly holy. God in his kindness gives us grace. ‘Grace’ is thus a bit like a can of spiritual coffee. I find myself unable to pull myself together and get holy. Then God gives me Grace, and suddenly I find myself much more eager and able.

    The grace of God is precious. It is impossible to earn God’s grace. As humans, we certainly do not deserve His mercy, yet He opens the windows of heaven and pours His grace on us. Jesus did not die on the cross so that we can take sin lightly and flaunt our freedoms without consequence. He also did not die in order to micro manage our life.

    When we fully understand the cost of our sin, we choose not to take God’s grace for granted. When we fully understand Jesus’ sacrifice and love, we begin to cherish our relationship with Him above all else. When we love God with all our heart, soul, strength and mind, we will hate sin and crave a closer relationship with Him.

  42. 21 Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.
    22 Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart.
    23 If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacles.

    What good advice for seeking God. Job of course didn’t need to hear this at this time in his life, he needed encouragement and their prayers, but today, this is what we must be telling others so they can find Him. Many people I know have a form of godliness but deny the real power of God…the Holy Ghost with evidence of speaking in tongues. If they could just see they need to receive His word, they could learn that He has more for them! So I pray, give them a hunger and thirst for your righteousness Lord so they will be filled. This is for this entire region.

  43. 23 If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacles.
    24 Then shalt thou lay up gold as dust, and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks.
    25 Yea, the Almighty shall be thy defence, and thou shalt have plenty of silver. J.SOLIZ

  44. “If you give up your lust for money and throw your precious gold into the river, the Almighty himself will be your treasure. He will be your precious silver!”
    ‭‭Job‬ ‭22:24-25‬ ‭NLT‬‬

    I remember showing this passage to a friend in high school. This showed him that money is only good on this earth. And if we seek will happiness it’s in Jesus Christ.
