Acts Chapter 16

40 Days of FIRE – Day 25

Today we meet a young man named Timothy as he joins Paul and Silas on their mission. Timothy is the first, second-generation Christian mentioned in the New Testament. Pray for the young Christians in your life, and for their consistent witness for Christ. Pray that they will Go Mission Minded and fulfill the plan God has for their lives.

JESUS today YOU will SAVE me.

Acts 16

Then came he to Derbe and Lystra: and, behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timotheus, the son of a certain woman, which was a Jewess, and believed; but his father was a Greek:

Which was well reported of by the brethren that were at Lystra and Iconium.

Him would Paul have to go forth with him; and took and circumcised him because of the Jews which were in those quarters: for they knew all that his father was a Greek.

And as they went through the cities, they delivered them the decrees for to keep, that were ordained of the apostles and elders which were at Jerusalem.

And so were the churches established in the faith, and increased in number daily.

Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia,

After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not.

And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas.

And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us.

10 And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavoured to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them.

11 Therefore loosing from Troas, we came with a straight course to Samothracia, and the next day to Neapolis;

12 And from thence to Philippi, which is the chief city of that part of Macedonia, and a colony: and we were in that city abiding certain days.

13 And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted thither.

14 And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.

15 And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us.

16 And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying:

17 The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation.

18 And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.

19 And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the marketplace unto the rulers,

20 And brought them to the magistrates, saying, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city,

21 And teach customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans.

22 And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat them.

23 And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely:

24 Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.

25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.

26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed.

27 And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled.

28 But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here.

29 Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas,

30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?

31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

32 And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house.

33 And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway.

34 And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house.

35 And when it was day, the magistrates sent the serjeants, saying, Let those men go.

36 And the keeper of the prison told this saying to Paul, The magistrates have sent to let you go: now therefore depart, and go in peace.

37 But Paul said unto them, They have beaten us openly uncondemned, being Romans, and have cast us into prison; and now do they thrust us out privily? nay verily; but let them come themselves and fetch us out.

38 And the serjeants told these words unto the magistrates: and they feared, when they heard that they were Romans.

39 And they came and besought them, and brought them out, and desired them to depart out of the city.

40 And they went out of the prison, and entered into the house of Lydia: and when they had seen the brethren, they comforted them, and departed.

  1. Next Paul and Silas traveled through the area of Phrygia and Galatia, because the Holy Spirit had prevented them from preaching the word in the province of Asia at that time.
Acts of the Apostles 16:6 NLT
Then coming to the borders of Mysia, they headed north for the province of Bithynia, but again the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them to go there. So instead, they went on through Mysia to the seaport of Troas.
Acts of the Apostles 16:7‭-‬8 NLT
This is why it’s important to have the holy ghost God spoke to Paul though the holy ghost we must continue to be refilled with the holy ghost everyday God I need more of you and less of me let your will be done

  2. There are so many things to blog on this chapter. From verses 1-5 MSG, where Paul shows us how to embrace a new believer and teach them the ways of the Lord. Verses 6-12 MSG shows us how important it is to let the Holy Spirit lead us and guide to do the kingdom’s work, for God will let all the pieces come together. Verses 13-15 MSG shows us through Lydia how not to take “no” for an answer. We must persist and never stop until God’s plan/purpose is fulfilled in whatever He is asking/directing us to do. The rest of chapter tells us about Paul and Silas where they were beaten black/blue and thrown in jail. The other prisoners could not figure out why they were singing hymns and praises after all that had happened to them. What a testimony! We all go through different trials; but, we never know who we may be testifying to…. through our reaction, our response or our words. We must keep the faith, as with Lydia and the jailer, our entire household may depend on it! Through it all, we must continue to GO.

  3. 30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?

31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

32 And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house.

33 And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway.

  4. Go Pray Go Preach Go Reach

All throughout the book of Acts, we find a church that is faithful to prayer and the Word of God. Prayer should be made for lost humanity but it should also be made to understand the leading of the Spirit. How can we “Go Preach” if we do not first learn to “Go Pray” Prayer will put within us an urgency for the things God loves and the things that He holds dear to His heart, which is souls. God desires to free us from our own inward mental prisons yet it requires us to pray.

We must allow an urgency in prayer to lead us to an urgency in preaching the Gospel in return it will cause an urgency to Go Reach lost humanity. Remember it all starts with Prayer but prayer alone is not the designated end. The end requires all three Prayer, Word, and Outreach! There must be a balance because the more we allow God to lead us we will understand that the three are really one.

    Prayer
    Outreach
    Fasting
    Worship

    Do you feel the urgency?

  5. Josiah: 30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
32 And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house.

God does things for a purpose and offers us opportunities, but it is up to us to take advantage of them. Paul and Silas chose to be strong in the Lord by singing songs and praying to God at midnight. If they had not chosen to be strong the other prisoners may not have been able to hear about God. It says in verse 25 “and the prisoners heard them”. Paul and Silas also got to be a light to the prison guard and his family. In fact they got to speak about God to him and his whole family. Paul and Silas even got to baptize him and his family. No matter how bad a situation may seem I pray we stay strong so that God can use us and and I pray that we try to look at how God wants to use us in different situations. LET US GO IN JESUS NAME! LET EVERYTHING THAT HATH BREATH PRAISE THE LORD. PRAISE YE THE LORD.

  6. Paul and Silas were in tune with God. They were sensitive and obedient to where He led them to spread the gospel. They ended up in some unlikely situations but all was according to God’s plan and they never doubted that. Even when situations don’t make sense, trust God and follow His plan!

Acts 16:14, “And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.
Let’s pray that God will open the hearts of the people that come to church, so that they can receive the Word of God that is spoken.

    Acts 16:25-26
    25) And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.
    26) And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and ever one’s bands were loosed.
Let’s shake the foundation with praise, so that the people who hear us, their prison doors will be opened and their chains will be loosed.

  8. Go mission minded! That is the very purpose of the church in the world today. We have a mission and that mission is souls! Note that when Paul went looking for someone who was hungry, verse 13 declares: ‘And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted thither.’ He was looking for the lost, he was following a vision from God and knew that his message would be new to nearly all those he came in contact with. Yet the Bible clearly states there was a place in that city where people came to when they wanted to pray!

We need to remember that many people we come in contact with are already going to have some form of belief, some measure of faith, something they are already in the habit of doing even if it is not the fullness of the revelation that God has delivered unto us. We just read recently of the disciples of John who were in a similar situation. They thought they had received everything there was to receive and had clearly made changes in their walk in response to the message of John, yet there was still more to be had from God!

Paul was consistently able to reach out to the lost independent of their background and make a difference in their life. Yes, many would also reject him, but it didn’t stop him from pursuing a missions mindset. If he had given up due to the rejections, what would have happened to all those who did receive the message! He focused on those who received the gospel and refused to be discouraged by the opposition to the message. Our prayer should be the same, to share this glorious gospel with all we can… to truly be all things to all men that by all means we might save some!

  9. Circumstances do not make the characte it reveals the character. Paul and Silas made the right choice by praising God, they do not complain but used the circumstances to glorify God.

  10. PRAYER WORKS

25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.
26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed.

People often get caught up in the details of the “how” “where” and “with what/who” is GOD going to answer our PRAYER.

JESUS did not promise to explain HIS reason, resources or reaction by which HE will answer PRAYER. Only that HE will answer PRAYER.

Paul and Silas facing their most negative hour of life, chose to “Have CHRUCH” instead of whine, complain or threaten.

Regardless of what we face today, no matter how dark, deep or despairing. In the deepest, darkest of trials. PRAY and PRAISE.

PRAY the will of GOD will be accomplished in ME.
PRAISE GOD for what HE has already done for ME.

The adversary desires us to focus on our pain and problem, however when we choose to focus on PRAYER and PRAISE we confuse his plan. Whatever challenge we face today, lets face it with PRAYER and PRAISE.

  11. I LOVE TO WORSHIP THE LORD
The charge was that Paul was teaching an illicit (unprotected by law) faith, and thus corrupted society. Coupled with the scornful “these men are Jews,” the charge aroused the passions of the mob. The magistrates, rather than investigate, had the two flogged and jailed for disturbing the peace.

  12. Paul was led by the Holy Spirit to preach the good news in certain areas. it was a vision that allowed him to see where the next move ofbGod was going to be.

Faith and the Holy Spirit in us gives us strength and allows us to be used by him to reach out to others. Through his power we are covered. Praise and worship him always he is worthy to be praised. His great name is above all names Jesus Christ is Lord.

  13. And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas.

What this verse means to me is we are passing threw this world just like they where passing threw . One day will be in heaven glorifying God for all he has done for us.
    Go in Jesus name amen

  14. 25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.

26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed.

Pray your way out! No matter what might have you bound, all you have to do is pray and lift up the name of Jesus and He will set you free!!

  15. iLove to Go Blog
Acts 16:26 KJV  And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed.

Notice that there was a Supernatural move of God and immediately after that the jailer and his whole house was saved. This very clearly shows me it is the will of God for miracles, signs, and wonders to happen in order to bring men, women, and children to the saving knowledge of Jesus. So many people miss their gifting and calling in life because they think it’s humble…I declare to believe that it is the will of God in order for more folks to get saved.

  16. 33 And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway.

34 And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house.

God has you where he wants you. Even if you can’t see why. He has a reason and purpose. In your darkest time is when God can shine the brightest. #GOdosomething

  17. 25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.

26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed.

The Lord inhabits the praises of Israel his people. Your reaction in your darkest hour could be what other people are needing to be set free. Praise Him. Yes it doesnt say it was easy but this shows a trust in God. Let your praise go up and God come and be the judge and watch a mighty earth shaken experience that will not only set you free but those around you that are watching how you react in the midnight hour. Praise Him cause He is Good. The stars have not fallen in and we are still in His hand.

  18. And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.

Everything we go through has an opportunity to witness to someone else. And we will never know what that opportunity is until we can gloIfy God in that moment! We must become so focused on God that it doesn’t matter how much we get beaten down that we can still seek God and give him glory and praise and look at every opportunity to witness. We are missionaries in every place that we are at. Where we are placed is the will of God. Sometimes we imagine that it’s whenever we get to another destination or another place that we will then fulfill the will of God, the will of God is where we are at right now!

  19. 14 And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.

15 And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us.

The work of evangelism is exampled in today’s chapter. Paul testified (witnessed), the Lord opened the heart of Lydia, she received and so did her household. That is evangelism at it’s finest.

Today as we have gone to the streets, our prayer is that hearts have been opened by the Lord to receive the invitations, people will come tomorrow, receive His free gift, be baptized and then bring their entire family to do the same.

  20. 9. And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of Mac-e-do’-ni-a, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Mac-e-do’-ni-a, and help us. 10. And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavored to go into Mac-e-do’-ni-a, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them. Praise ye the Lord !!!! Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.

  21. Acts 16:26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed.

The earthquake would have been meaningless had not the jailer and prisoners heard Paul’s testimony in prayer and song.

Keep singing and praying!!! God will save our families/COFW

  22. Hannah “30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” Each of us need to ask God the same question in our lives. We need to do his perfect will in our lives not our own will. He will do marvelous things in our life and bless us more than we could have ever imagined. In the Lord you will be blessed and saved, but our own will, will not save us. I desire that I will always keep doing his will in my life and that I won’t get distracted by this world.

  23. 25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.

26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed.

Paul and Silas prayer broke through in the middle of their midnight, in the middle of their situation and gave them a breakthrough! When we can pray in our prison, when we can stay strong and passionate in our struggle, when we can praise in our prison thats when God will show himself strong and deliver us from our trials!

  24. Have FAITH and GO in his Name

Faith- strong belief in God or in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual apprehension rather than proof.

18 And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.

There is so much faith being brought through this whole chapter… Thank you Jesus, by his stripes we are healed and by the power of the Holy ghost we too can casr out demons all it takes is faith the size of a mustard seed and NO doubt. We praise God for how mighty but sometimes we are wondering if we will actually witness something crazy miraculous. The thing is dont let your mind wander off in that direction know and have Faith God will and can do anything…

Since this fast families are reunited people are talking to one another people are being delivered people are being healed. Everyday your faith should increase

    God bless you all

  25. 24 Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.
25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.
26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed.
We serve an on time God.We cannot have a miracle unless there is a need… He always “works every thing out for good to those that love him and are the called unto him according to his purpose”. We may be in the darkest trial of our lives and feel all alone send neglected but we are not alone because he is working all things out and providing a miracle in our life!

  26. 30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?

Paul and Silas were put in jail for their faith and spreading the gospel. The guard knew this and under any other circumstances would have never met. God allows them to endure imprisonment to reach the lost unlikely souls. Their praise and worship set captives freem. The guard is the one who asked how to be saved. It all came from him after Paul told him not to harm himself. He would have been as good as dead for allowing the prisioners to escape but instead he receives the gospel and the plan of salvation and his entire household is saved. When we don’t know why God is allowing us to go through trials we can look for who he wants us to reach were he puts us.

  27. And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.Acts 16:31 (KJV)

We can also be like Paul and Silas and be witnesses of christ and go forth in the world and tell the gospel. When we can reach out to soul for them to be able to be saved and repent and be baptized in Jesus Name and receive the gift of the holy ghost.

  28. Prayer Changes Everthing
25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.

26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed.

Such a mighty move of God because of prayer! Paul witnessed and the jailer was saved.
Lesa has already witnessed to the African nurse here at the hospital! She also let them know what she could eat and explained the fast…this nurse is interested . She says she will visit . Whatever challenges we face God is still at work.
Thank you POFW for being a praying church!
    His Strength is Perfect

  29. 25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.
26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed.

Keep praising God in your storm, joy cometh in the morning.

  30. Then they went from town to town, instructing the believers to follow the decisions made by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem. So the churches were strengthened in their faith and grew larger every day.
Acts of the Apostles 16:4‭-‬5 NLT

How many men of God have come to preach recently and they all so strongly urge us to pray and stand behind our pastor. I believe the same thing is happening for us as the believers in these verses. We as a church are being strengthened in our faith and growing larger everyday. To God be the glory!!

  31. Your prison walls can be brought down, and you can see the mercy of God. See how important your praise is!

    “Believe upon Jesus Christ”……..

  32. The spiritual father

and circumcised him because of the Jews which were in those quarters: for they knew all that his father was a Greek.

Fathers sometimes do things that don’t make any since to the son. It was already decided and agreed upon that the gentiles didn’t need to be circumcised but Paul had Timothy go through it anyway. As sons we are sometimes asked to do things that don’t make since to is but our fathers are looking through eyes of experience. They see things we don’t see and they have been placed we haven’t, they know things and circumstances because they have already loved it. Paul was setting Timothy up to succeed. I don’t have to understand every move that my Pastor makes, just trust that he is hearing the voice of God and he’s setting me up to succeed

  33. 14 And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.

This is one of my daily prayers for the Lord to open up the hearts of the hearers and not only listen but to also understand the scripture. The Word of the Lord is something that pierces our hearts and should move us. Every service there are souls that are distracted with their own problems and go to church just to “feel good” about attending church on Sunday, but I pray that every soul would have an open heart and mind to want more of God.

  34. 14 And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.
15 And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us.

This woman worshiped Jesus before she was saved, so why do so many of us think that because we are saved, we don’t need to be demonstrative worshipers? I bet that for her to be known as a woman who worships The Lord, she had some sincere, demonstrative, loud worship.

  35. 30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?

What a testimony to your trial! We all know we go through trials and circumstances for a reason, weather to GROW ourselves or to reach someone. If the trail that you are going through right now, saves 1 soul. It was worth it.

  36. “And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat them. And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely: Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.”
    ‭‭Acts‬ ‭16:22-24

    Help is on the way

Sometimes in our life it just feels like we are taking a beating. We have gone through so much pain publicly that everyone sees the trouble we are in. It smoggy even seem like that there is no way for us to get out of the trouble that we are in, but that is when God can prove himself mighty. You can have great faith and know that God will work on your behalf. He might send an earthquake (which is more to endure), an angel, or he might just walk you through (like the Hebrew boys in the fire). We never know how He will send us help, we only know that help is on the way.

  37. 6 “Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia,

Wow! You mean God doesn’t love the Asians, and He didn’t want the gospel preached there? No, It’s a matter of timing. You can’t preach the gospel everywhere on this earth all at the same time, there are some priorities. The gospel will go to Asia, in fact, the disciples were told by Jesus: Go into all the world and preach the gospel, but there were some other priorities. God wanted them to go somewhere else right at that moment instead of into Asia.

We may have a desire to be a missionary to Hawaii – and it may be that is truly where God wants you to be. However, there is timing involved. It could be the locals are not quite ready to receive the Word. Or, it could be we are not quite ready to be in the field alone. Either way, we must trust God’s timing for things in our lives. If we have a close enough relationship with the Lord, we will have an understanding of His timing. However, if we need help finding our way and timing our Pastor is the one to turn to. Not uncle Joe and Aunt Sue.

Not that Joe and Sue would give us bad advice but Pastor is the one we have given permission to be our Pastor and the one we trust to hear from God on our behalf.

  38. 3 Paul wanted to take him along on the journey, so he circumcised him because of the Jews who lived in that area, for they all knew that his father was a Greek.

    What an act of submission!

Paul was extremely serious about not being a stumbling block to weaker believers.

    Romans 14:13-15

13 Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister. 14 I am convinced, being fully persuaded in the Lord Jesus, that nothing is unclean in itself. But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for that person it is unclean. 15 If your brother or sister is distressed because of what you eat, you are no longer acting in love. Do not by your eating destroy someone for whom Christ died.
