Acts Chapter 8

40 Days of FIRE – Day 33

Philip was one of the first to preach the Gospel outside of Jerusalem. In today’s reading, he preaches to crowds in Samaria. Then, following God’s leading; he persuades an Ethiopian who is trying to understand the Scriptures. Pray that God will orchestrate one-on-one encounters with others and for the church to boldly Go in Wisdom and respond.

Acts 8

And Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles.

And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him.

As for Saul, he made havock of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison.

Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word.

Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them.

And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did.

For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed.

And there was great joy in that city.

But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one:

10 To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God.

11 And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries.

12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.

13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.

14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:

15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:

16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)

17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.

18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,

19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.

20 But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.

21 Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.

22 Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee.

23 For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity.

24 Then answered Simon, and said, Pray ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me.

25 And they, when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem, and preached the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans.

26 And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert.

27 And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship,

28 Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet.

29 Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.

30 And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?

31 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.

32 The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth:

33 In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth.

34 And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man?

35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.

36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?

37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.

39 And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.

40 But Philip was found at Azotus: and passing through he preached in all the cities, till he came to Caesarea.

  1. It’s all about GO, as we see in this chapter; starting with verses 3-8 MSG “…..GOing down to a Samaritan city, Philip proclaimed the Message of the Messiah….”. Even Simon (the great wizard) in the end of verse 13 “…he wouldn’t leave Philip’s side” (which meant he had to GO). Then verses 14-17 says “….they sent Peter and John down to pray…” (which meant they had to GO). Then in verses 26-28 Philip “…He got up and went…” (another GO). When we “GO” we are moving forward as Mark 16:15 AMP says “And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.” Same verse in the CEV “Then he told them: Go and preach the good news to everyone in the world.”

  2. CHURCH ON FIRE = GO IN JOY

5 Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them.
6 And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did.
7 For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed.
8 And there was great joy in that city.

Every where we GO we represent someone or something. If we wear a uniform it is considered a team, company or organization. If there is no uniform then the next indicator we consider would the cause. What does the event, corporation or organization support. Finally the activities, who or what will be edified as result of the event.

Philip was representing the CHURCH, the GOspel of JESUS to the world. Philip preached Christ JESUS to them. Those that received the WORD of the LORD saw miracles, signs and wonders. The demonstrations of GOD’s GRACE generated “Great JOY”.

JOY is a FRUIT of the Spirit of GOD. When we are engaged in and involved in the working of GOD, we will find ourselves in the repose of JOY.

Lets GO and BE Church today to people in need and witness the POWER of the Holy Ghost in operation among us and we will see, feel and witness Great JOY in Fort Worth. In JESUS name.

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray

  3. 9 A man named Simon had been a sorcerer there for many years, amazing the people of Samaria and claiming to be someone great. 10Everyone, from the least to the greatest, often spoke of him as “the Great One—the Power of God.

There are people who like to put themselves and be seen at the top. They speak of themselves as being great and letting their ego rise. Hollywood is a great example of this, but it can also affect men of God. We’ve seen evangelists, preachers and pastors that fall for letting their pride and ego get the best of them.

  4. Even though there may be chaos going on around you, the word of God must be delivered. People that are lost need help in finding the path to righteousness. This is where the sanctified true beliervers come in. We cannot be fearful to tell someone about Christ. God will give us the boldness needed to declare his word. It is vital that we are about our fathers business in this hour. We may not know when he’s coming, but rest assured he is coming and we need to be ready.

  5. 8:29,30 then the Spirit said to Philip, ➡️GO⬅️ near and join thyself to this chcharriot
And Philip ran thither to him and heard him read the prophet Isaias and said understand thou what you deadest?
    ———- GO!!! Go in faith
    Go in confidence
    Go in boldness
    Go expecting

AND COME BACK REJOICING AND GIVING Thanks to GOD.
    To GOD be the glory!!!!

  6. Acts 8:1 & 4-5
    1) AND Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem: and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles.
    4) Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word.
    5) Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them.

The church was being persecuted in Jerusalem which scattered the people to Judaea and Samaria, and they that were scattered preached the word every where.
These verses are a fulfillment of Jesus command in Acts1:8. “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”

  7. 18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,

You can not buy the gift of the Holy Spirit with money. Get your heart right with God.

  8. 4 Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word.
Says here they were scattered preaching the word..the word being Jesus Christ.

7 For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed.
8 And there was great joy in that city.
Oh what Joy it brought to the people. Remember the old song the joy of the Lord is my strength. You have to keep in mind to GO in JOY to remember the peace God can give you in your life…to walk in the Spirit.

Jesus Christ was preached in many many cities. Along with several baptisms in his NAME .

40 But Philip was found at Azotus: and passing through he preached in all the cities, till he came to Caesarea.

Go in Joy and preach to others what God can do and what he has done for you.
    God bless you all!

  9. 13 Simon himself believed and was baptized. And he followed Philip everywhere, astonished by the great signs and miracles he saw.

In previous verses, Simon was in the town, astonishing people with his sorcery. It reminds me of David Blake and other magicians of our time, that captivate the audiences by there craftiness and sorcery. The on lookers are astonished by what they do, things that seem to defy logic.

What would happen if some, saints full of the Holy Ghost were to hit the same streets, like Philip, and pray for people. Heal all manner of sickness. People in wheelchairs standing up to walk, people with pain in there bodies be healed, blind having sight. We too need to get a boldness inside of us and take the same streets being used to deceive and thru miracles signs and wonders, take back the ground that devil has claimed.

  10. Faith is necessary to even come to God, while wisdom requires effort on the part of the believer to increase not only in knowledge but in the understanding of God’s word. It should be obvious that wisdom is required of our own life but like many aspects of our walk with God, it is also a necessary component of our ability to effectively reach the lost.

Both cases in this chapter demonstrate the wisdom of those who went forth. The Samaritans had long since been pushed to the edges of Jewish society and yet they heeded these men from Jerusalem who had a message of salvation. They were bound by witchcraft and yet heeded the words and works of the apostles that brought a message of peace. It was not until after they received that message that Peter was called for and by the laying on of hands they received the Holy Ghost. Their faith responded to the miracles and to the message and God provided the rest.

The save is seen in the case of Philip. The eunuch did not understand what he was reading in the word. He recognized that he needed someone to teach him what the scriptures had to say… and Philip responded with understanding. The following day or week would have been too late. His chariot was passing through and going on to his destination. Philip had to be ready when the question was asked to look at the passage and in that moment of opportunity to preach Jesus.

Wisdom does not come by accident. It requires time in the word, time in prayer and even in fasting, it requires time set aside to ponder and mediate on the word to work out our own salvation with fear and trembling. It builds our very foundation and allows us to go in strength and confidence as we declare the word of God to all who would receive. Let us determine to go in wisdom and be effective wherever God would open the door!

  11. 7 For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed.

8 And there was great joy in that city.
Many Miracles are taking place and I. The midst if adversity there will be niy!

  12. 7 For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed.

8 And there was great joy in that city.
Many Miracles are taking place and I. The midst if adversity there will be niy!

  13. 7 For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed.

8 And there was great joy in that city.
Many Miracles are taking place and I. The midst if adversity there will be niy!

  14. 7 For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed.

8 And there was great joy in that city.
There are many miracles taking place at POFW.
The some are in the midst of adversity we will have joy. For He is the joy of our strength the breath we breathe. I believe that there is so much getting ready more to take olace. Sacrifice does not go unnoticed by God. He will fulfill that which He has promised!

  15. Every Sunday we have an altar call, every Sunday we we plead the blood of Jesus Christ and interceding in prayer for others to receive The Holy Ghost, and so many time we hear well I don’t know?, I got things I need to get square away first, and we watch them walk away from the water that represents salvation. Let’s pray that that hunger of knowledge, and the same BOLNESS and desire of the Ethiopian take hold of the hearts that wonder among us in this City. In Jesus Name Amen

  16. Crowds listened intently to Philip because they were eager to hear his message and see the miraculous signs he did. A man named Simon had been a sorcerer there for many years, amazing the people of Samaria and claiming to be someone great. They listened closely to him because for a long time he had astounded them with his magic.
Acts of the Apostles 8:6‭, ‬9‭-‬9‭, ‬11 NLT
We must be careful be sure what we preaching is from God
This verse remind me of the last days in rev: many will be decived

  17. 3 As for Saul, he made havock of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison.
4 Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word

Saul was dedicated to God, though he was doing it wrong he gave everything that he had before his conversion, when he was converted he gave everything he had to the cause of Christ. Can we say the same? That we give more to God than what we gave to the world? Everything we were or would be in the world is what we need to be in the spiritual world and more to Christ.

  18. 19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.

    You already have the power!

Young people we already have this power. The power to pray with people and they will get their healing. The power to pray against situations in your friend’s lives that they might change. We don’t have to do some great amazing thing, to show God that we are capable of doing this. As long as we are Holy Ghost filled, under the proper submission, and live a holy life. We have this power. The power to speak to a mountain to make it move. The power to tread upon serpents ,and they will not harm you. This is the power that we possess. So #GOdosomething for God.

  19. 6. And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Phil’-ip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. 7. For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed. 8. And there was great joy in that city. Thank you for Unity, Love, and Healing, in Jesus name !!!!

  20. Act’s 8:6 ( English Amp) And great crowds of people with one accord listened to and heeded what was said by Philip, ad they heard him and watched the miracles and wonders which he kept performing ,( from time to time).7 For foul spirits came out of many who were possessed by them, screaming and shouting with a loud voice, and many who were suffering from palsy or were crippled were restored to health .Praise God for it.

  21. iLove to Go Blog
36And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?

This eunuch was a wealthy man. It is so refreshing to see a wealthy man so ready to receive the gospel. He could have been like Naaman who got aggravated that the man of God asked him to dip into the Jordan river.

This eunuch was wealthy, humble, and hospitable. There is no doubt he brought revival back to his land. If God used Philip, God can use us as well.

  22. Verses 26-30 God told Phillip to get up and go. Without hesitation verse 30 says Phillip ran to do what God told him to. We need that same get up and go, no matter what the Lord asks of us!

  23. v4 Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word..

GOD has ways of turning negative situations into opportunities with positive conclusion

    • Continue….with positive conclusions.
The scattering of believers actually became a means
      of spreading the gospel.

  24. 13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.

These scriptures just show how great receiving the Holy Ghost is. For Simon while he marveled at the miracles and signs. He was not moved to offer any of his worldly possessions until he saw people receiving the Holy Ghost. He didn’t want the power to do miracles and signs, but what he wanted was to receive the power of the Holy Ghost, showing that the Holy Ghost is one of the greatest things that can happen to anyone.

  25. Stephen sparked a revival, Saul was trying to put it out and Phillip was taking off with it on a mission in the Holy Ghost. Phillip was the first missionary moving from place to place as God lead him literally. He was one of the twelve disciples ready to “go” as the great commission requests. He is a great example of being willing and used of God for the ministry of the gospel.

  26. Josiah: 29 Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.
38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.
“Then the spirit said unto Paul, GO near…” When we obey God’s spirit great things happen. Paul listened to the Spirit and an eunuch got baptized! Paul was told to GO and he went and someone got blessed by getting to understand the meaning of some of God’s word, learn, and get baptized. I pray that I always obey what God tells me to do in the spirit. There are so many souls out there that are just waiting and I pray that I always take advantage of an opportunity to outreach and be that light. For the harvest is great but the laborers are few. LET US GO IN JESUS NAME! LET EVERYTHING THAT HATH BREATH PRAISE THE LORD. PRAISE YE THE LORD!

  27. Bible Study 101

30 And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?

31 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.

It’s an awesome experience to sit with a hungry soul and explain the scriptures to them as God has revealed them to you. This is the plan and will of God that we all look up for guidance and then take what we’ve learned and share it with someone. There’s great joy in seeing the light bulb cow on when the revelation comes for the first time!

    GO TEACH

  28. Acts 8:5-8 Going down to a samaritan city, Philip proclaimed the message of the Messiah. When the people heard what he had to say and saw the miracles, the clear signs of God’s action, they hung on his every word. Many who could neither stand nor walk were healed that day. The evil spirits protested loudly as they were sent on their way. And what joy in the city.

    Mark 16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

THE POFW laborers returned again with JOY, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name!

  29. Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.

20 But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.

The gift of the Holy Ghost cannot be brought with money, but everyone can afford it because it is free of charge with a full benefits! Your life will be changed forever. I pray everybody in this world recieve the Holy Ghost lord knows I pray that happens.

Even though we invite and We don’t see the fruits of our labour ..YET. We have to reach out city this, nation needs to be reached. We lost our focus which is to help save that which is lost. Luke 19:10

We have to keep our faith and trust in God. The lost souls in the last days God said he will pour out his spirit on all flesh! ACTS 2 :17

  30. 25 And they, when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem, and preached the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans.
26 And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert.

We need to be sure that we are being sensitive to God’s voice and those He sends to direct us. As we are going through life oftentimes we may be caught up in all that is happening around us, yet we need to be as Philip and be sure that we are always walking where God wants us to walk so that way we can minister to those He wants us to minister too. This can be as easy as always praying and being sure that in ALL we do we do it in the will of God. I need to GO in the name of Jesus! With God all things are possible!

  31. 19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.

20 But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.

The gift and blessing that God has given his people cannot be gained with money or possessions. It is something that can only be obtained by the power of the holy ghost and His anointing. We must be sure to seek Gods face and not His hand so we can receive His power to preform miracles.

  32. 4 Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word.

What the enemy meant for evil God used it for good and for his kingdom

  33. “As for Saul, he made havock of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison. Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word.”
    ‭‭Acts‬ ‭8:3-4‬ ‭KJV‬‬

    Persecution

There are many things that cause persecution. The persecution often causes people to quit. The people of God can live with the reassurance that through God we can do anything. As persecution occurs the people of God can continue to serve no matter where they go because the Lord is with us. Everything works for the good. The good is that the message is being spread in a new place. The message will still be spread. Jesus still gets all the glory, and now it’s wider spread.

  34. 19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.

20 But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.

21 Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.

  35. 14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:
15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:
16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)
17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.

There were signs and miracles and great joy in the city when they believed on Jesus, yet the word of God shows they still needed to be baptized in His name and receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Go Teach someone the salvation message and they will have great joy!

  36. 4. Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word.
5 Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them
6 And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did.
7 For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed.
8 And there was great joy in that city.
This truth shall always triumph! Regardless of how much the early church was persecuted, the saints of God did not listen hope, and they did not give up. They just went to the next city and continued to preach the word of God. The devil thought he could destroy the word of God by driving then away but instead the word of God spread and so many more souls were saved..’And there was great joy in that city’.
We cannot ever stop telling of this precious truth. It does not matter when persecution comes. What matters is how many souls we can witness to of Jesus’s saving grace until he calls us home to be with him forever more!

  37. 40 But Philip was found at Azotus: and passing through he preached in all the cities, till he came to Caesarea.

We should all be like Philip and spread the good news to everyone.

  38. Philip ran over and heard the man reading from the prophet Isaiah. Philip asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” The man replied, “How can I, unless someone instructs me?” And he urged Philip to come up into the carriage and sit with him.
Acts of the Apostles 8:30‭-‬31 NLT

It is our duty to raise up disciples of Christ. How can these disciples understand the work the LORD has called us to do if they are not first instructed? We must be loving in our instruction to others whether it be our family, Sunday school kids, or new believers, just as Christ and pastor are loving in their instruction. Where would we be without a guiding hand? We would be wandering…which is very dangerous to do. Wandering too far without guidance…you can find yourself lost.

  39. Poor Simon

At first glance, one could mistake the actions of Peter as harsh and cruel. It might appear that Simon had seen the difference between what he had been doing as merely a side show attraction and can now see the real thing. He might have been asking in an earnest attempt to be able to give people the Holy Ghost. It could be that Simon only knew how to buy things. He seen these men giving away the Holy Ghost and presumed it was something they learned.

So, why then was he dealt with so harshly? We understand the Holy Ghost is not only a gift from God but part of the salvation for our soul. Simon only knew the immediate evidence of the Holy Ghost. He had no understanding of the real power. When a child plays with fire, they only realize its immediate actions. Maybe burning a pile of leaves. Maybe a bon-fire in the back yard while roasting marshmallows. What a child does not understand is the lasting effects of fire; pain, scars and devastation.

Simons intentions may or may not have been pure. Either way, Peter could see the truth and scolded him. Simon responded correctly. He did not swell up and say who do you think you are? He immediately asked them to pray that such bad things would not happen to him. When we are scolded, how do we respond? Do we bow up in defiance or do we ask for help to prevent us from falling further?

  40. 22 Repent of this wickedness and pray to the Lord in the hope that he may forgive you for having such a thought in your heart.

The only way to receive complete forgiveness is to ask God for it, you don’t have to beg but just ask God for forgiveness and turn away from your sins!
