Proverbs 20

Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

The fear of a king is as the roaring of a lion: whoso provoketh him to anger sinneth against his own soul.

It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.

The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.

Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.

Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?

The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.

A king that sitteth in the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes.

Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?

10 Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them are alike abomination to the Lord.

11 Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.

12 The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the Lord hath made even both of them.

13 Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.

14 It is naught, it is naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.

15 There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.

16 Take his garment that is surety for a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.

17 Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.

18 Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.

19 He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.

20 Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.

21 An inheritance may be gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be blessed.

22 Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the Lord, and he shall save thee.

23 Divers weights are an abomination unto the Lord; and a false balance is not good.

24 Man’s goings are of the Lord; how can a man then understand his own way?

25 It is a snare to the man who devoureth that which is holy, and after vows to make enquiry.

26 A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them.

27 The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly.

28 Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy.

29 The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the grey head.

30 The blueness of a wound cleanseth away evil: so do stripes the inward parts of the belly.

  1. Verse 24 MSG “The very steps we take come from God; otherwise how would we know where we’re going?” Same verse AMP “Man’s steps are ordered and ordained by the Lord. How then can a man [fully] understand his way?”

Proverbs 16:9 AMP says “A man’s mind plans his way [as he journeys through life], But the Lord directs his steps and establishes them.” Same verse CEV “We make our own plans, but the Lord decides where we will go.” Psalm 37:23 AMP says “The steps of a [good and righteous] man are directed and established by the Lord, And He delights in his way [and blesses his path].” Same verse CEV “If you do what the Lord wants, he will make certain each step you take is sure.”

  2. Proverbios 20:19 El chismoso traiciona la confianza;
    no te juntes con la gente que habla de más. 29 La gloria de los jóvenes radica en su fuerza;
la honra de los ancianos, en sus canas.
    30 Los golpes y las heridas curan la maldad;
los azotes purgan lo más íntimo del ser.

  3. 24 The LORD directs our steps, so why try to understand everything along the way?

    1 Corinthians 13:12
Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely. NLT

  4. 24 The Lord directs our steps, so why try to understand everything along the way? (NLT)

Faith, trust, and then obedience. Direct my steps today Father and let Your will be accomplished.

  5. Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?

This proverb poses a question. A faithful man who can find? Whether we look for a worker or a friend or a future husband if we lean on our own understanding and devices we usually fail. To find a man of faith and value it’s always best to trust and wait upon the LORD. The LORD will prove them.

  6. 15 There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.

Wisdom and knowledge of the Lord and his ways are prized and seeking them will help us be blessed as we live for Him.

  7. I’m right and you’re wrong!

3 It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.

Anyone can argue, in fact most of us do. Sometimes, it starts from nothing and explodes into a full on war. This was not the intent from the start, rather a heated debate over who is responsible for the checking account catastrophe. Because we know something about a situation does not automatically grant us permission to intervene with someone who is involved in the situation. If we know landscaping and we witness someone volunteering their time to help keep the church flower beds looking good does not automatically make us their supervisor.

One could walk into the situation and declare I am the all-knowing landscape guru – do as I say, I am a professional. Likely, this will create strife or worse. Rather, one could inquire as to whether they might could help. Then, instead of declaring their vast knowledge of mulching one could be mindful of the heart of a volunteer and offer a suggestion that maybe 12 inches of mulch is too deep. The same principle goes for more serious life struggles also.

Just because you are financially stable does not grant you the authority to stick your nose into someone’s finances. You may offer that you were once in a financial pickle and learned how to dig your way out. Maybe even offer some steps to get started and leave it at that. If the recipient is accepting one could ask if they would like to discuss further – not to demand access to their check book and bank statements.

  8. Avoiding a fight is a mark of honor; only fools insist on quarreling. Though good advice lies deep within the heart, a person with understanding will draw it out.
    Proverbs 20:3‭, ‬5 NLT

It better to walk away then to stay in the fight a couple verse later it say don’t go into a fight with out understanding
My point is don’t fight unless you know what you are fighting for

  9. 19 He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.

    Amen
The Joy of the Lord is my Strength

  10. 24 Man’s goings are of the Lord; how can a man then understand his own way?

The Lord said be still and know I am God.
    Jesus will open a door
iBless you in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ

  11. 29 The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the grey head.

30 The blueness of a wound cleanseth away evil: so do stripes the inward parts of the belly.

They say grey hair means wisdom, I always thought that grey hair or silver is so beautiful, but if you ask someone they will say every gray strand means something, or they got it after going through something that taught them a lesson, I dont know if its true or not, but I do love listening to the stories. I was informed by a nurse along time ago that when a women is pregnant their uterus turns blue, and I think it is so crazy to find this passage here! I have never read it before, but I liken it to when we repent, baptized in the Name of Jesus, filled with the Holy Ghost its our new birth experience! So the blueness of the womb Cleanses away evil ( Baptism ) and the stripes in the inward parts of the belly ( Holy Ghost )
John 7:38 He that beleiveth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water

  12. “The very steps we take come from GOD; otherwise how would we know where we’re going?”
    ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭20:24‬ ‭MSG‬‬

If we’re not following God then who are we following and where are we going? If we are not careful we could be led by deciption and sin. This is why we must let God order our steps and take us on the path of righteousness, peace, and joy! Lord I surrender the life You have given me to You, have Your way!

  13. He who goes about as a.talebearer reveals secrets. Therefore do not associate with one who flatters with his lips.. blessed be the name of the Lord.

  14. 11 Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.

12 The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the Lord hath made even both of them.

13 Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.

  15. 19 He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.

We must be careful who we take up company with. If they will gossip to us about others, they will gossip about us to others. Don’t allow gossip to become part of your way of life. Choose to keep your thoughts and mind pure from things people say about others, lest ye become part of the problem and not part of the solution.

Gossip is sin, and sin when it is finished bringeth forth death. Therefore, we must keep our mind and heart pure before the Lord. Steer clear of those that continually are meddling in the middle of everyone’s business, and those that continually talk about others; they are busybodies and are not about the Kingdom of God.

  16. 24 Man’s goings are of the Lord; how can a man then understand his own way.

We don’t really know entirely why God’s way isn’t what we have in mind. Just Let God be God he’s in control because your will isn’t what he has planned in your life. We don’t always understand the why but let God and he’ll order your steps. Your joy and strength in the Lord will help you understand his ways are best for you.

  17. GRAVEL MOUTH

17 Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.

I have read the Proverbs for years now, every single month and I cannot recall ever making the connect of this verse and my personal experience with JESUS on September 12, 1988.

I had just attended a 2+ hour Bible Study taught by Pastor Charles M Johnson of New Braunsful, TX. The book 88 reasons why the LORD will return for HIS church in 1988 was a hot topic and popular subject. I was sick of life and living the way I was. I just wanted out, away, change, anything. During this Bible Study it was taught that I was not saved (this was no secret to me). But that I must be Born Again of the water (Baptized in JESUS name) and Spirit (Receive the gift of the Holy Ghost). As I left the Bible Study, I was contemplating my next move. I worked the overnight shift at the Dairy and had all night to consider what I had heard.

When I arrived at work, it was a normal night to begin with, my job was to count all the dairy product in the cooler within a 6 hour period. I was a rough, foul mouth, hateful, lost individual and that is who I portrayed. As I began to greet people in my usual foul language of cussing at everyone and everything. I had no better words to describe it, other then it tasted like gravel in my mouth. When I would refrain from profanity all was good, but everytime I would speak a curse word, that gravel taste would appear.

I made a deal with GOD (in my ignorance) I committed to GOD that I would not curse and use profanity from 12am to 6am and then at 6 when the daytime employees arrived, I would be my old self. By the Grace of GOD and with HIS help, I kept my tongue and spoke polite, normal words when I spoke and my mouth and mind were filled with peace. But at 6am I began to curse and use profanity again. To my surprise, that gravel taste was back in my mouth. I decided then around 7am on September 13, 1988 that I must be baptized in the name of JESUS and receive the Holy Ghost. Later that night at a Revival service, I was baptized and filled with the Holy Spirit as I spoke in other tongues.

GOD used gravel in my mouth to reveal himself to me. I was deceived by life and its carnal ways and my mouth was filled with gravel. But GOD!

The revelation of this passage and connection in the WORD of GOD nearly 29 years later is proof that we are “ever learning” and that the WORD of GOD is ALIVE. Continue to read, study and pray the WORD of GOD for eternal revelation.

Today my mouth is filled with Praise to JESUS and Hope to the world. Lets GO share our savior with the world. I have been delivered from GRAVEL MOUTH and you can too. Speak TRUTH and no lies. Shout PRAISE and not discord.

  18. Proverbs 20:22
“Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee.”

1 Thess. 5:15 says, “See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.”
Romans 12:17 says, “Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.”

When someone has wronged us, we’re not to “get even with them.”
Actually, the opposite is true in according to God’s word. Let God handle the matter, and we should feed our enemy when he’s hungry and give him drink when he’s thirsty. We’re not to be overcome of evil, but we our to overcome evil with good. (Rom. 12:19-21)

    GO Overcome

  19. 22 Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the Lord, and he shall save thee.

We are not to trade evil for evil but we are to return evil for good. We must learn to wait on the Lord and allow him to save us and avenge us of our adversaries. As the Lord told Moses “the battle is not your’s its the Lord’s”

  20. 22: Don’t say, “I will get even for this wrong.” Wait for the Lord to handle the matter.

At times in our lives, we will come to a situation where we want to take control and “handle” it. Yet, if we act without God, we are only placing ourselves and others in a deadly situation.

Proverbs 3:5 – 6 “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Trust that the one who Created you, can handle the matter.

4The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.
Ha, folks will come up with all kinds of excuses why they cannot work. It’s too hot or it’s too cold, or it’s to wet…but what we always find is it’s always an excuse. Some folks say they can’t find jobs because they have tattoos, while other folks say they can’t find work because they have been in trouble with the law. Some say they can’t find a job because they don’t have a car…Others can’t find jobs because they are homeless…Those are all excuses. The Word of God does not give many options to those who have excuses…The only option is to have…”nothing”.

  22. 5 Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.

Hearing wise, godly advice is only the beginning.Taking the time to: listen, absorb, think upon and then apply the advice to your life will make the difference between a right course of action and one filled with regret. You can always try and plan how you would like to handle a situation but you can never change how you reacted/ dealt with it once it has passed.

  23. Josiah: 4 The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.
When I read this it got me thinking. This verse may not be exactly talking about the spiritual harvest but, it got me thinking about it. The Bible tells us how the harvest is great but the laborers are few. Sometimes we may have to GO outside of our comfort zone but, we should not let that stop us. It may be cold when farmers need to plow or, work, or it could be hot. However they still work in the summer and the winter because they know the harvest is greater than the obstacles. There may be people who oppose the church. There may be spirits that attack the church and laborers. However, the harvest of souls is worth the trials. When God comes, or when my times up I want to have something to show God so that I can hear well done thy good and faithful servant. So, let us GO in JESUS NAME and not let this world stop us!

  24. 30 The blueness of a wound cleanseth away evil: so do stripes the inward parts of the belly.
    YES!!! HALELUJAH!!!

  25. “The buyer haggles over the price, saying, “It’s worthless,” then brags about getting a bargain! Wise words are more valuable than much gold and many rubies.”
    ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭20:14-15 NLT

It means that God expects you, as a believer, to walk in integrity in every area of your life. Yes, God cares about little things like the price you paid for something. Don’t think that you can go around taking advantage of people and still retain His blessing. And is it really worth it? Is saving a few dollars on a purchase worth losing the blessing and favor of God over? Absolutely not!
If His wisdom is more profitable than silver and yields better returns that gold, then shouldn’t you want it operating in your life? That’s why you must make time to take time with God EVERY DAY.

  26. Proverbs 20 : 15 (English Amp) There is gold, and a multitude of pearls, but the lips of knowledge are a vase of preciousness [ the most precious of all]. Job 28;12 But where shall Wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding ? Proverbs 3:15 Skillful and godly ! Wisdom is more precious than rubies; and nothing you can wish for is to be compared to her. We only have wisdom and knowledge only from GOD life. And leading people to God we will be blessed.

  27. 3 It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.

4 The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.

5 Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.

6 Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?

  28. 1Wine produces mockers; alcohol leads to brawls. Those led astray by drink cannot be wise.

I have met self proclaimed Christians who say it ok to drink alcohol, since Jesus converted water into wine. The problem with that is, they will have 3, 4 or more drinks and then become drunk which is sin. The perception of having a beer can in your hand, will lead others to believe your not a Christian.

  29. 6 Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?
7 The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.
8 A king that sitteth in the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes.

We shall be known by our fruits. What we take in and what we allow into our lives and what we give out…but mostly through everything that we do. I read in a book..we are not defined by what we say but by our actions. Harry s Truman is quoted to say “the buck stops with you” our actions determine the type of person we are.

  30. I’m reminded of the words of Jesus in this proverb: ‘It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.’ Not to gain the upper hand, not to get in the last word, but to turn the other cheek and cease from strife. It is the fool that continues to meddle in strife; a wise man is shown to be a man of honor when he can allow the peace of God to prevail.

Notice that he did not limit it to those of aged wisdom, but to any who would cease from strife. Those who can diffuse the situation or even allow the offense to go unanswered that strife would not propagate. ‘Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.’ What we do in the midst of a trying situation speaks far louder than anything we say afterwards.

It is not just for ourselves. Our children need an example of the humility and meekness of Christ. Those we win to the Lord, children in Christ, need the same example, and although we may not always recognize it’s importance, we need to live that example of righteousness and purity ourselves for the peace and joy of God to truly be complete. Let his light shine!

  31. 7 The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.

I can say amen to.this. My father was an upright man and he had integrity. I honestly believe that this is one reason why my life is so blessed. From his life to the statues that he taught me as a young boy. Men of the church be men of integrity, not only will it bless you but your families and children.
    #GODOSOMETHING by walking in integrity

  32. 11 Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right

We shall be known by the fruits that we show. What we take in will show up in our lives

  33. 17 Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.

Sin is like Dr.Pepper sweat at the first taste, but the aftertaste is sour and gives you a bad feeling. Sin will always look intising, but soon hooks you like a fish and you have to do everything to get away! Lord I thank you for your forgiveness! Thank you Jesus!

  34. 5 Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.

NIV 5 Though good advice lies deep within the heart, a person with understanding will draw it out.

There are hidden things deep inside of all of us. Somethings are good and others not do good. Yet it takes a wise person to help us draw these thing out of us and it takes us being wise to walk in understanding.

  35. 17 Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.

Deceit is a dangerous thing because their is something being hidden. Light has nothing to do with darkness and presenting something as a ray of light that turns to be a dark deception is a lie. satan is the father of lies and we show who our Father is by the light he has given us as the light of the world. Deceitfulness can be determined by the fruit of the person presenting bread to be sweet but is actually bitter like gravel.

  36. 7 God-loyal people, living honest lives,
make it much easier for their children.

Amen!!! You reap what you sow!! Why hide and lie when you can show your children (physically and spiritually) that you can live a pure life that is pleasing to God!! We might be able to lie to people but we can’t lie to God!! He knows our hearts, motives, ideas, emotions, EVERYTHING!! Lord help me live a pure holy God fearing life for my children. I want my children to love you with all their heart mind and soul!!!

  37. 24 Man’s goings are of the Lord; how can a man then understand his own way?

We should never plan out our lives without God he is the one who is in control. We need to lean on him instead of our own selfish desires.

  38. 11 Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.

Meet the teacher night does so many things for teachers. One of which is that it allows teachers to see how children and parents interact. It allows us to see how children behave around their parents. Many parents tell teachers about the “work” of their children. Soon their work will speak for itself and there will be no need to have others speak for them.

  39. 18 Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.

Don’t die on a battle field because you decided not to go to others and ask for thoughts and wisdom. Stay in line. Stay safe. Their is safety in the presence of counselors

  40. 25 It is a snare to the man who devoureth that which is holy, and after vows to make enquiry.

26 A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them.

27 The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly.

  41. 13 Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.

May the Lord take away my love for sleep, so that I may be like the ant diligently preparing and working for the harvest. And Storing up for the time of need. Lord move on me. That all times I consider the ant and his ways so that I may be diligent and wise, like the ant.

  42. Proverbs 20

15 There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.

Wealth is wonder to keep. It is a full time endeavor. Knowledge is a precious jewel.
Isaiah 28:9 “To whom will he teach knowledge, and to whom will he explain the message? Those who are weaned from the milk, those taken from the breast?
Isaiah 28:10 For it is precept upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little.”

The above is true for today, Knowledge is so precious and we receive it precept upon precept and line upon line. When we read the word (Bible) we are receiving
Truth and knowledge they create wisdom a gift of Jesus. These gifts then may be applied to ourselves, our children, and in our work place. How is it done through the reading of the word. The knowledge of the word
Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. The word is made for correction
2Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
Let us grow in the word and learn that we have been given more then milk or Pablum. Let digest the meat of the word thus showing and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
