Proverbs 31

The words of king Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him.

What, my son? and what, the son of my womb? and what, the son of my vows?

Give not thy strength unto women, nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings.

It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:

Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.

Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts.

Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.

Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction.

Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.

10 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.

11 The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.

12 She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.

13 She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.

14 She is like the merchants’ ships; she bringeth her food from afar.

15 She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.

16 She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.

17 She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.

18 She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night.

19 She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.

20 She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.

21 She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.

22 She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.

23 Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.

24 She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.

25 Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.

26 She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.

27 She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.

28 Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.

29 Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.

30 Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.

31 Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

  1. Lemuel’s mother taught him how to find the right one. When a man is seeking “the one” he wants to marry, he cannot just simply choose because he think she’s pretty. The beauty of a woman goes so much deeper than her outer appearance. If you choose based on looks, when the look changes, your attention will be turned elsewhere.

Lemuel means belonging to God. When you belong to God, you will submit yourself to his word. A man that is submitted to God will not just be attracted to any type of woman, but his attention will drawn to a virtuous one. A virtuous woman, knows how to seek the Lord and when she finds him her task is not over. She’s wise, God fearing, faithful and dedicated to the work of the ministry.

Women also cannot just accept any man who winks his eye at you and knows how to use the right words that make you feel like you’re on cloud 9. Godly women look for godly men. He needs to love the Lord with all his heart, be God fearing and not afraid to put God first. If he won’t pray when you meet him, don’t expect him to pray after you say I do. For a relationship to grow strong, prayer is a must and not optional.

  2. Verse 30 AMP “Charm and grace are deceptive, and [superficial] beauty is vain, But a woman who fears the Lord [reverently worshiping, obeying, serving, and trusting Him with awe-filled respect], she shall be praised.” Same verse MSG “Charm can mislead and beauty soon fades. The woman to be admired and praised is the woman who lives in the Fear-of-God.”

Luke 1:45 AMP says “And blessed [spiritually fortunate and favored by God] is she who believed and confidently trusted that there would be a fulfillment of the things that were spoken to her [by the angel sent] from the Lord.” Ladies we must believe, trust and hold onto what the Lord has spoken into our lives…..never stop worshiping, obeying, serving and trusting in Him!

  3. 30 Charm can be deceptive and physical beauty will not last, but a woman who reveres the Eternal should be praised above all others.

Marrying the right person is one of the most important decisions most people ever make, so they must choose wisely and carefully. The Book of Proverbs ends with a tribute to a wise choice in a wife. She is strong, independent, capable, and cares for her husband, her family, and the poor. – Voice

1 The words of king Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him.

Wait a minute…Let’s break this down…This is the prophecy that King Lemuel’s mother taught him. What did she teach him? One thing she taught him was the dangers of wine. The other thing she taught him was the importance of a hard working faithful wife.

Now let’s be honest…this new generation that we live in today does not teach the principles that are written in this chapter…in fact, this generation doesn’t even teach a man needs to get married. For six thousand years, the roles of the husband and wife were written deep in the hearts of men and women (and even outlined in the writings of the Bible). The roles of the man and woman are even written in movies such as “The Little House on the Prairie”. Hard working men and woman raising hard working children…Six Thousand Years of History…Now all the sudden, in just the last 60 years, society has lost all its principles. Proverbs 31:15 says “She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household…” How many young wives wake up early and feed their families breakfast? (This would be a good poll to have Fusion take lol.)

Let’s return to the Word of God and become once again hard workers and follow and teach the Word of God.

  5. 6 Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts.

Many ask “can I drink?” They drank wine in the Bible” well …. here is your answer “strong drink” leads to nothing good but distorts you and messing with you whenever you have this within you. The enemy will try to trick you with anything he can, but we have the mind of wisdom straight from the lord. Whenever you have questions listen to the Holy Ghost and when it is telling you. Thank you Jesus!

  6. GO IN THE FEAR OF GOD

30 Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.

Unfortunately in our society the opposite is promoted as life goals for a young woman. A young woman is taught to attempt to please everybody (favor). To modify her original appearance to beautify after this world and not after GOD.

But, true beauty is from the LORD. A woman who fears the LORD is worth much more than anything money could purchase. As a woman fears the LORD she is reflecting HIS image as she places her trust in HIM and her FAITH and SUBMISSION to GOD is deserving of Praise.

I am thankful for our Apostolic Pentecostal heritage and the revelations of TRUTH in modesty and dress. The presentation of true and pure beauty that comes from the LORD and HIS masterful creation of beauty called woman.

  7. 25 She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.

30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting ; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.

  8. 1 The words of king Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him.

Lemuel means “for God” as a mother of three I dedicated each of them back to God when they were babies. To me, this symbolized that they really did not belong to me but to God. I only have a small slice of their life to mold them to become great men and a great woman; not only in the society we live in but also for the Kingdom of God.

This means I have to not only teach them by telling them how to live but show them by living the way I want them to live and by being an example of who I want them to marry. (now that was a mouth full 😉 Through the years I’ve found myself not only repenting before God when my actions, attitude, or words do not align with the Word of God but I try to make it a point to let them know that whatever my action was it was not right.

You see we are all striving to be like Jesus in everything we do and say. Yet I do not want my tainted view during a bad moment to make a lasting impression on their little lives that will taint them for a life time or even eternity. So, no I am not perfect but I am striving. I believe Lemuel’s mother’s prophecy to her son was just that… a prophecy. She may have been a mother just like me striving to be the best she could in every area of her life so she prophesied to her son what a women should be. In some areas “Calling those things that are not as though they were.”

The Word prophecy here is the word “massa” or burden, tribute, or utterance. I want to encourage us as mothers and wives. I know that it is our greatest desire to take care of our families and be the Proverbs 31 women. Yet, rest assured that we are all reaching for this. The way we accomplish it all may be different but the goal is still the same. Our children belong to God, our husbands belong to God, and we belong to God! So, keep striving for perfection, yet in those tainted moments do not allow people or the enemy to still your JOY because God allowed you to care for those children and have your husband because He trusts you. YES HE TRUSTS YOU!

  9. 9 Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.

It is our duty no matter how well off we are or how good we have it to always consider and plead the cause of the needy. Such were some of us but God has picked us up and turned us around. We must not forget were we came from and the struggles we experienced when we were poor and needy. God wants to deliver us from that and use us to help others in that same situation.

  10. 1 The words of king Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him.

Great teaching!!! Generations have changed so much that parents are letting their children do whatever they want. The parents pretty much let the children run the family. The parents want to please their children and give them what they want with no boundaries!!! Children need boundaries and need to be taught with scripture how to act, behave, love, care, take care of their temple, what and not to watch, etc. As parents we need to remember that we are the parents and not our kids “friends.” I have seen many youth and children run over their parents and I pray that Jesus will give me the wisdom to guide and teach my children. I want to teach my children why or why not we do things. We have to teach our children before their “friends” teach them otherwise.

  11. 26 She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.

27 She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.

28 Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.

  12. Proverbs 31
This has been called the Ideal Woman Chapter

A mother teaching her son what he should seek for in a wife.
These attributes may seem difficult to women today but they are attainable

11 The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.

There are always rewards . Enjoy life, enjoy the fact that if you care for his heart there is safety within in your marriage vows. You will not have to worry if he is wanting someone else for you not only hold the key to his heart but you hold his heart.

On a spiritual note the heart has to be fixed upon the one true lover of our soul. Wanting to please him far above all others. No matter what age no matter where you are in life seek Him and let nothing distract you from what He calls and places into your heart. There is a price to pay you may have to walk away from some things that you thought was the answer but knowing deep within you can only serve 1 master and love Him with all of your heart. Don’t allow anything or anyone to cause you to walk any other road but the road that leads to eternal life. Follow the teachings given to you, listen to those in your life that give you sound advice and trust in the Lord to fulfill all that your heart desires.
Easier said than done yes but keep your eyes on the cross. He is Faithful . He is Life.
The Joy of the Lord is My Strength.

  13. 30 Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.

I can only pray that I will one day be such a woman. Young ladies, like myself, keep yourselves focused on God and enjoy your time alone with Him. Whenever I would be hurt or discouraged, I always remembered a message I heard on singleness by Bro. Lee Stoneking. He said words along this line: It’s now that we can truly give our all to God, the time when He can have us all to Himself, and we can passionately dedicate our lives to Him with no restraints. I know our ultimate goal is to be married and have families but with that comes a refocusing. So train yourself now to daily study the word, to daily seek His face; build your relationship with God so strong that it becomes something you refuse to sacrifice when you meet “the one.”

  14. The Virtuous Woman – so many things can be said of her, but I think the last verse sums it up

31 Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

Our fruit should speak loudly of our lives. If we are truly living up to the woman described in this chapter, or striving to live up to these expectations, we don’t have to lift ourselves up or toot our own horn, the fruit will be their and it will speak for itself.

  15. 5 Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.

6 Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts.

7 Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.

  16. 30 Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.

31 Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

Your relationship with God will speak for you. You won’t have to boast in yourself or ensure anyone how good your relationship with God is, the way you walk, talk, act, and live your life for Him will do that for you. That is if your hands are doing the work of the kingdom and you are in obedience to His will!

  17. 10 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.
11 The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.
12 She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.

Never in my life have I understood this verse to it’s extent until I met my wife…there isn’t a day that goes by (not exaggerating at all) that I haven’t been thankful or given glory to God for what I next to fighting and warring in the kingdom. Understanding the importance of who we marry can make or break our calling and that is significant in itself. For it truly is above riches of this world when your spouse lines up equally yoked with you

This is a value we need to extend outside our children onto every person we have the opportunity to minister to. Bc this is such a foreign topic and one that is even scoffed my the general public when it used to be the standard for society. We can still teach others this value in life in being a virtuous person

  18. Proverbs 31:1 (NLT)
“The sayings of king Lemuel contain this message, which his mother taught him.”
vs. 3) Do not waste your strength on women, on those who ruin kings.
vs. 4) It is not for kings, O Lemuel, to guzzle wine. Rulers should not crave alcohol.
vs. 8) Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed.
vs. 9) Yes, speak up for the poor and helpless, and see that they get justice.
vs. 10) Who can find a virtuous and capable wife? She is more precious than rubies.
vs. 11) Her husband can trust her, and she will greatly enrich his life.
    12) She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.

These are wise words from a mother to her son.

  19. Hannah: “30 Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.” The things of this world are not beautiful to the Lord no matter how much things of this world you put on. His light shinning through us is what God calls beautiful and when we walk in his steps. Don’t fall for the things of this world no matter how ‘beautiful’ they call it. Through Christ is the real beauty. The ways of the Lord are beautiful and God says a person serving him is more beautiful. Keep him with you and let him use you to let his light shine through you. Always keep your focus on the Lord and always continue to walk with him on that straight and narrow path.

  20. 10 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.
11 The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.
12 She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.

Sometimes we get fleshly and think that we, as men, deserve a woman who will be barefoot and in the kitchen, waiting on our every beck and call. Why not, I mean that is the way it’s supposed to be right??? NOT!

A virtuous woman loves and cares for her husband, but many times that means taking care of the kids, instead of him, or at least instead of taking care of him the way he thought she should. As hind sight is 20/20, even when I think I am being neglected, or rater not getting pampered the way I want, I can see that she is helping me more than I realize.

  21. Anyone who is of the mistaken belief that women are somehow not as valued in the kingdom of God needs to read this proverb (among many other passages in the Bible of course). The Bible places clear roles on the man and the women, as it does for every position in the kingdom, but it did not relegate them to a role of servanthood… other than that in common to our Lord. The machismo spirit of the world lies in direct contradiction to the godly man who loves his wife enough to lay down his life as Christ did for the church.

We need to recognize the value of a Godly wife. ‘Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her…’ Trust is given when two souls have truly become one and chosen to walk together in strength. That passage in Genesis is often misquoted… the word ‘helpmeet’ is not to be found in the Bible. That passage started, ‘And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.’ God gave man a wife that was meet, or appropriate, for his needs to be a help for him.

My wife does not need to walk behind me, she doesn’t have to remain silent around me, she isn’t there to wait on my every beck and call. She has unique strengths and perspectives that were given to her that together we would have everything we need to keep a godly home that is conducive to our own walk as well as the development of any children we may be blessed to raise together. As the head of our household it is my responsibility to provide for her and our children.. and that provision goes much further than handing over my paycheck. It comes with a responsibility that all their needs are provided for… their physical needs as week as their emotional and spiritual needs. The knowledge that they are valuable, the certainty of their love, the appreciation of who they are, the common simple bonds of love that bind us together far more surely than any vow could do alone.

And when that depth of commitment and trust is developed in love, then we see it’s fruition: ‘Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.’ A man needs to rule, or govern, his household well to even be qualified for leadership… and that leadership begins with the one he’s chosen to be his wedded wife! Don’t let the world cloud our vision of our women! Let us be stand out and declare her virtues and value in the kingdom of God!

  22. 18 She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night.

We must always be ready spiritually and make sure that our light never goes out. We must always have a revival mentality.

  23. 27 She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.

28 Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.

This proverb is one that we hear of often, it is this example of many that we have throughout the Bible to look to for guidance of how we should be not only as children of God, but as stewards of His blessings he bestows throughout our lives. Not only can I call my mom blessed, but I can try my best to live as this lady, to always be looking to improve my walk with God! Because just as this lady is virtuous physically, this is reflective of how our spiritual walk with God should be. We can always look for ways to improve not only our walk with God, but understand that our walk will affect those around us. I need to be sure that in all I do that I shine forth the glory of God and always be looking to build upon the spiritual blessings He continues to put in my life! Praise the Lord for His mercy endureth forever! For His goodness is new each morning!

  24. Josiah: 9 Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.
God died for the rich and the poor. He died for all of our sins. This world may look up to the rich and down on the poor sometimes but, God died for all. The ways of a true Christian may be scarce at our school but, God is the one who is going to win. People can be won over to God from seeds we plant when we just stick up as a Christian. The Bible says to “plead the cause of the poor and the needy.” So, let us GO be a CHRISTIAN EXAMPLE!

  25. 10 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.
11 The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.

  26. God provides a vivid example of a godly virtuous woman. She cares for her family because of her love and devotion to them and most of all to Jesus. Her devotion and dedication portrays the joy she receives from caring for those that she loves the most. She’s is the example for young and old to look up to. She is godly and not worldly, she is humble and not proud, she is selfless and not selfish. She is the Christian example in a world that that desperately needs it.

  27. Princes and poppers

4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:

5 Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.

The question is what are you destined for. Before we ever get positioned in our full purpose in the Kingdom of God, Jesus is watching to see what we are doing in the present. Kings are kings even when no one is looking. Princes do not cease to be princes when they are under pressure. We do not compromise who we are for a circumstance.
We are Kings and priests. The argument of home mich wine is good for the belly is answered with this question… What are you destined for? I chose to position myself for my future and neither give place to the devil to rob me of my destiny. If you never have the bottle in your hand, you can never be drunk. There is no reason to put your future on the line for a false prize. No reason to give up Kingship for a false feeling of pleasure.

  28. 10 Who can find a virtuous and capable wife? She is more precious than rubies.

In today’s society, it seems like people are just marrying for looks. They get married even after knowing each other a few weeks or months. They really dont know each other, until they are living together after marriage. But if men and women would wait to know each other, be patience and let their love grow for one another, their marriage would be alot better off down the road.

  29. 10 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.

Lord help me to forever strive to be a virtuous women! Who will put her family and other before herself!

  30. 8 Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction.

9 Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.

  31. 9 Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.

We can shine for Jesus Christ by gliorifying him every time we humble our selves and make him first. We can’t allow the enemy to creep in our lives. Live a righteous life and turn to Jesus.

  32. Reading this detailed description of the ideal wife and mother as a point-by-point standard God expects us to live up to, its easy to feel overwhelmed and exhausted before we even begin! Just because a woman is not married to a man doesn’t mean she should not strive to have these characters, for instance the church is The bride of Christ and he is our groom therefore we are his beloved. We should be walking through life as though we are claimed of him under covenant we are spiritually ‘taken, stamped and sealed’. The intention of this epilogue to the book of Proverbs wasn’t to give women an impossible to-do list, but to spread out before them the many opportunities they have to use their God given gifts, talents and wisdom in fulfilling and productive ways. Rather than limiting women’s roles, they are expanded endlessly. Women were created to a positive and profound impact on everyone around us- whether it be children, parents, friends, husbands, family, or society in general. Being a woman is a blessing, and being a wise, strong and Apostolic woman blesses others in ways that can’t be calculated. This is a virtuous woman and wife of noble character.

  33. Looks don’t work but she who fears the lord shall be praised ! Apostolic women should fear the lord.

30 Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.

  34. 10 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.

Having a woman of God by your side can help you get closer to God and gain more wisdom.

  35. 3 Give not thy strength unto women, nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings.
4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:
5 Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.

We must keep sober in every aspect during these last days. We must stay prayed up to be of sound mind.

  36. Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction.(Proverbs 31:8 KJV)

We should be careful what we say and who we say it to. The way we speak to our friends and family may not be the same as high officials. In choosing our words wisely we should use our voices to stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves like elderly and children, and the broke down busted and disgusted. When we give a humble and kind hand of help it shows them Christ-like compassion.

  37. 30 Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.

When a woman takes care of her family like described in this chapter she will be praise worthy.

  38. Proverbs 31:8 NLT
[8] Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed.

  39. 10. Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. 11. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. 12. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life. To God Be The Glory for the things he has done.

  40. Proverbs 31:12 (English Amp) She comforts , encourages, and does him only good as long as there is life within her. A mother makes sure that her family is well taken care of. She’s capable of learning different things besides of cooking, cleaning , etc. In her spiritual and practical devotion to God permeated every area and relationship of her life. She becomes reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord.Which brings true foundation for life which is valued by God .

  41. 10 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.
The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.
12 She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.

If I am to marry let it be to a virtuous woman. But in all let it be in the hands and will of the Lord.
