Ecclesiastes 1

The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.

Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.

What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?

One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.

The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.

The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.

All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.

All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.

10 Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.

11 There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.

12 I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem.

13 And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith.

14 I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.

15 That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.

16 I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.

17 And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.

18 For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.

  1. 3 What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?

If you trade your whole life for physical gain and a secure earthly future at the cost your eternity, you have gained nothing.

    Matthew 16:26
For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

  2. Verse 2 AMP “Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher. “Vanity of vanities! All [that is done without God’s guidance] is vanity [futile, meaningless—a wisp of smoke, a vapor that vanishes, merely chasing the wind].”

Psalm 32:8 NLT “The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.” Let the Lord guide you in all that you do.

  3. How many of us reach the point in our life where this question becomes real: ‘What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?’ Eventually everyone comes to recognize that if all we have to look forward to is this life, then we are of all men most miserable. There has to be something more to life than surviving the daily grind and setting a little aside for a rainy day. There has to be a greater purpose for existing than satisfying the needs of our body as it gradually waxes faint year by year. There has to be a God in heaven!

When people come to that recognition, and especially when they receive a greater revelation of who God is, life suddenly has a greater meaning and purpose! The lament of vanity that ‘There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after’ doesn’t matter anymore because they build a relationship with God who does not forget and is always faithful!

Of course there is still a potential stumbling block and Solomon mentions it here as well. When we increase in the wisdom of God and are trying our best to live a life that is pleasing into him, we begin to recognize the cost. ‘For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.’ The important thing to remember is this sorrow is not meant for our despair, but to motivate our intercession. When we see the lost, when we see their folly, when we see how many ignore God’s call, it’s not time to give up! It’s time to fall in our knees in intercession, giving thanks to the God that imparted his wisdom into our hands and continue to live his example that so shines before the world!

  4. 9 The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.

Nothing is a surprise to GOD, HE has seen it allll!!!

  5. 4 One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.
5 The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.

Jesus said to lay not our treasures in heaven where moth and dust destroys it…it is too easy to be consumed by things that will eventually pass away, or to become stuck in a situation and not see everything around us. This generation is so consumed by what they believe is going on and think this is all there is to life, the generation before had similar beliefs…but like that one, this will pass too…along with our troubles and cares. That why we labor for the kingdom, bc it is the only thing that is everlasting

  6. “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:”
    ‭‭Colossians‬ ‭1:16‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Everything is created by God himself as it says for him and by him. Throughout the whole chapter it was speaking of the sun and things created by him. God is the potter and I am the clay. I pray that he would mold me everyday a make me new. My God is awesome and has all power and authority. Thank you Jesus!

  7. 11 There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.

if we do not remember the past we will repeat its failures.

  8. GO IN THE KINGDOM OF GOD

2 Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.

The Preacher said “all is vanity”. All of what? All that we labor to attain in this world and life. Personally I am a witness and a testimony of what JESUS will do when we live our life for HIS Kingdom. Blessings we never expected, opportunities beyond our thoughts and grace that is unprecedented.

The challenge that many face in life on this earth is a quest for ease, a labor for possessions and pleasures. This approach is backwards, we must be first seeking JESUS and HE will add all these things to us.

VANITY – 1892. hebel, heh´bel; emptiness or vanity; figuratively, something transitory and unsatisfactory; often used as an adverb:—x altogether, vain, vanity.

ALL is VANITY – this is the reason why so many people in this world are unhappy. They work and pay and work and pay and work and pay and work and pay. But are left feeling empty. This world is empty. Then Kingdom of GOD is the only source of fullness or completeness.

The PEACE and JOY that the world seeks after is found only in the Kingdom of GOD.

Romans 14:17 For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.

Lets GO IN THE KINGDOM OF GOD

    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork
    iGive
    iReap
    iGo

  9. Ecclesiastes 1:2 (AMP)
“Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher. “Vanity of vanities! All (that is done without God’s guidance) is vanity (futile, meaningless – a wisp of smoke, a vapor that vanishes, merely chasing the wind.)”

The one thing we need in our lives everyday is God’s Guidance. We can get this through Pray and Reading the Bible.

  10. 2 “Everything is meaningless,” says the Teacher, “completely meaningless!” (NLT)

Pondering thoughts like the ones posed in this chapter, are ones that can be pondered for hours as you realize how true it is generally speaking and how true it is in our own lives. We place value on these earthly things but considering their eternal value makes them virtually meaningless. Don’t value things or people here on earth more than you value the things of God; His word shows us what is truly meaningful.

  11. 7 All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.

This has always intrigued me, how can the rivers and streams run into the sea and it dont over run, God is amazing, nothing he does is by coincidence or mistake, he designed the sea to hold an abundance of water, just like he designed us to praise and worship HIM!

  12. 3 What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?

4 One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.

It’s better to labour for what is important! Labour for what is worth! Labour for what shall not perish! Labour for what is eternal! When I die I will not take anything but I do want my God to tell me “well done” I want to spend eternity with Him and labour now for what is worth fighting for!!! I pray that people would open their eyes and realize that there is heaven and a hell and that not everyone goes to heaven!!! Labour for what is eternal!!!

  13. ““Everything is meaningless,” says the Teacher, “completely meaningless!” What do people get for all their hard work under the sun?”
    ‭‭Ecclesiastes‬ ‭1:2-3‬ ‭NLT‬‬

I don’t want to gain the whole world and lose my soul! If we spend all of our time and energy on gaining the possessions of the world when will we have time to work for the kingdom of God? In the end everything of this world will just fade away but the things of God are eternal!

  14. And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit. For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.
    Ecclesiastes 1:17‭-‬18 KJV

Vexation: H7469 rĕût (reuth) a feeding upon, i.e. grasping after:– vexation

Man when I read this: that word itself stood out to me. How many of us vex our spirits; We grasp for things that are out of reach. There are times that the things reached for are not spiritual and can harm our walk with God. The last thing I want to do is grieve the spirit. This grievance can do some serious damage: we have to be careful in all that we say and do. Father give me the understanding to know when the spirit is in trouble and guide me to know how to keep this from happening.

  15. 10 Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.

King Solomon was one wise, knowledgeable, full of wisdom man. he wasn’t perfect because no one is perfect but he definitely told you how it is and not near around the bush. He is straight too the point. Nothing is new under the sun. He been king over isreal he have seen it all and its nothing but smoke, noone will remember you when your gone. Wow king solomon…geez. If we will change our view on how were living for God awend study his word, ee will have a deeper understanding on Gods word, issues of life and our relationship with God. We will know that we have a purpose and a mission to fuffill.

  16. Verse 2 AMP “Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher. “Vanity of vanities! All [that is done without God’s guidance] is vanity [futile, meaningless—a wisp of smoke, a vapor that vanishes, merely chasing the wind].”

Without God we are nothing. .. everything that we do is vanity and everything we pursue is simply a “vapor ” we must consume ourself with being in the will of God and following his lead in everything that we do. Without His direction were simply floating through life without biblical purpose.

  17. 10 Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.
11 There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.

  18. 3 What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?

Laboring for the physical things is temporal, but laboring for the eternal stores up treasure in heaven. Store up prayers in heaven for the lost and the prodigals that can be poured out and used for the end time revival.

  19. The greater my wisdom, the greater my grief. To increase knowledge only increases sorrow.
    Ecclesiastes 1:18 NLT

When God gives us a gift, such as Solomon and his wisdom, if it’s used for God’s intended purpose it can be our greatest blessing. If we turn from God’s will with the gifts He’s given us it can be more like a curse. Here Solomon had perverted what God had raised up. He turned from honoring the Lord and gave in to what the world wanted him to be. In that moment he found sorrow.

  20. 18The greater my wisdom, the greater my grief. To increase knowledge only increases sorrow.

The more you know about something the deeper in trouble you can get into. Or the smarter you get the easier things are to figure out. The more you know about the bible the better understanding you get if the bible. Let’s use our wisdom and knowledge for bettering ourselves.

  21. 11 There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.

What will be remember about you?

This is a question that we must ask ourselves. What will you be remembered for when you pass away? Will it be for the bad attitudes you have, or the cheating you did as a child. Or maybe even that friendship you broke off because you wanted to do your own thing. But it doesn’t have to be like that. Because we are children of God. we can be remembered for much greater things. Like…. He made a difference in my life, or she gave me a word that helped me in my time of need. They reached out to me when i needed someone the most.
So what will you be remembered for?

    #GODOSOMETHING by being a light.

  22. 10. Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us. 11. There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after. I LOVE YOU JESUS !!!!

  23. There is no remembrance of former things, nor will there be any remembrance of things that are to come by those who will come after. Blessed be the name of the Lord.

  24. Seek the Lord daily, ask for guidance and you shall be led by Jesus. Seek your heart…you will find what the flesh desires most.
2 Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.

  25. 3 What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?

What are we really working for? A lot of us think that working hard for what we want and most of it is material things, but if we can work just as hard for His Kingdom we will gain more than material things because material things last only for a while. Kingdom things last forever.

  26. Ecclesiastes 1:18 (English Amp) For in much ( human] wisdom is much vexation, and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow. Repent , Seek God daily, Ask God for guildness. Study and learn your bible for yourself. Only God can direct you.

  27. There is no new thing under the sun. Trying to change God’s word to fit your lifestyle is just not good for your spiritual life. We must be willing to follow every word of God. Our life literally depends on it.

  28. Josiah: 18 For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.
The more we may know the more sorrow we may have. As we learn more things we come upon more problems and faults especially in this world. The Bible tells us that the more wisdom we have the greater the grief. As we GO to wherever we may GO in this world the more lost souls we may be around. Although it may grieve is when we see this world we can shed light on people. So, let us GO BE A LIGHT TO THIS WORLD!

  29. Does the teacher actually mean what he says? Why would a book in the Bible , the book of the Creator of life, declared repeatedly that life is meaningless? The word Ecclesiastes the word meaningless is used 30 times. The word is used speaks of things being empty, transitory, and unsatisfying. To solve the puzzle we must look at the other repeated phrase: “under the sun” said over 20 times in this book. To find the meaning of life and what makes life worth living takes knowing the giver of life and Creator. To live a life without God is empty and “meaningless”. God breaks the chains on monotony and the cycle of bleak living. He brings light to dark situation and delivered us from the sin that has people bound to this depressive thinking. He gives us a reason to live and rejoice ..He gives life new meaning of an abundant life.

  30. 14 I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.

The world has nothing to offer. True life is found in walking with the Lord.

  31. For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.(Ecclesiastes 1:18 KJV )

Wisdom and knowledge cannot be attained without great pain of body and mind for when a man has achieved his highest, yet in his own mind he is never fully content: therefore in this world is no true happiness. We find happiness and joy that comes from our God.

  32. Eccleastees
    The Words of the Preacher

Listen closer daily to what is being taught. Guard your heart and your thoughts.
Allow nothing to distract you. Profit and gain of this world is not measured by what you have materialistically but what is deep within the soul of a man.
Hear the words of the preacher apply them to your heart.

  33. 2 Meaningless meaningless says the teacher. Utterly meaningless. Everything is meaningless.

Our activities and purposes on earth are meaningless if they are carried out apart from God as well. Life apart from God has no meaning and cannot produce true happiness.

  34. 14 I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.
15 That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.

These verses sum up so efficiently the reasons why it is important to lay our treasures up in heaven. Why it is important to focus on our spiritual lives, no matter what may be happening around us in life. Yes our lives here on earth are important because it is what we do here that will determine what we do for eternity, but I have to be sure I don’t get caught up in the labours of this world and let my spiritual walk with God slip. My relationship with Him is far more important than anything that i may have to do in this world! That is why living life for God is so important! I want to be sure that in all I do, I keep my focus on Him!

  35. Ecclesiastes 1:4-11
The ceaseless cycles of nature illustrate the
Futility of life. The amazing thing is that the earth goes on, but man, the height of God’s creation, passes into eternity with no remembrance (v.11). There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.

  36. 7 All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.

8 All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

9 The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.

  37. 18 For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow

I find this very interesting yet intriguing. One would think that this is a good thing but maybe the more we find out about things and our selves the more we see that we fall short of the glory of God. Not for sure but this is something to ask God for revelation, at least for me that is. Increasing knowledge increases sorrow…interesting correlation.

  38. 3 What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?

Understanding that if man doesn’t work, he doesn’t eat. However, too many people are caught up in gaining wisdom in this world, and not gaining wisdom of His World. Our purpose here is for us to lead others to the gospel of Jesus Christ. If our focus has shifted to gaining wealth and personal knowledge to elevate us in this world, we have lost the focus of the Kingdom.

Seek ye first the Kingdom of Heaven, and all these things shall be added unto you.

  39. 18 For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.

Is this a contradiction? In Proverbs 3 the Bible proclaims happy is the man who finds wisdom. Wisdom teach us what sin is. Another proverb comes to mind; where little is known, little is expected. When we acquire wisdom we then acquire the understanding of how sinful we as humans are and how easily our actions fall short of our intentions.

There is no such thing as true freedom. Wisdom is very freeing… it releases us from ignorance. we know better and it naturally follows that we do better. We then suffer from having a great understanding of things (in general) as a result of wisdom. We are better able to anticipate the end or the beginning of things.

  40. 3 What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?
11 There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.

This is to reminder all my work will go to dust and be forgotten by the people on this earth. The only thing that will stand sure is the word of God, even as it has stood through all of mankind. So, when I have to decide between work and school, life’s cares or the things of God. May I always choose the things of God because all else will be forgotten and disregarded.
