Ecclesiastes 2

I said in mine heart, Go to now, I will prove thee with mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure: and, behold, this also is vanity.

I said of laughter, It is mad: and of mirth, What doeth it?

I sought in mine heart to give myself unto wine, yet acquainting mine heart with wisdom; and to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was that good for the sons of men, which they should do under the heaven all the days of their life.

I made me great works; I builded me houses; I planted me vineyards:

I made me gardens and orchards, and I planted trees in them of all kind of fruits:

I made me pools of water, to water therewith the wood that bringeth forth trees:

I got me servants and maidens, and had servants born in my house; also I had great possessions of great and small cattle above all that were in Jerusalem before me:

I gathered me also silver and gold, and the peculiar treasure of kings and of the provinces: I gat me men singers and women singers, and the delights of the sons of men, as musical instruments, and that of all sorts.

So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom remained with me.

10 And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labour: and this was my portion of all my labour.

11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.

12 And I turned myself to behold wisdom, and madness, and folly: for what can the man do that cometh after the king? even that which hath been already done.

13 Then I saw that wisdom excelleth folly, as far as light excelleth darkness.

14 The wise man’s eyes are in his head; but the fool walketh in darkness: and I myself perceived also that one event happeneth to them all.

15 Then said I in my heart, As it happeneth to the fool, so it happeneth even to me; and why was I then more wise? Then I said in my heart, that this also is vanity.

16 For there is no remembrance of the wise more than of the fool for ever; seeing that which now is in the days to come shall all be forgotten. And how dieth the wise man? as the fool.

17 Therefore I hated life; because the work that is wrought under the sun is grievous unto me: for all is vanity and vexation of spirit.

18 Yea, I hated all my labour which I had taken under the sun: because I should leave it unto the man that shall be after me.

19 And who knoweth whether he shall be a wise man or a fool? yet shall he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shewed myself wise under the sun. This is also vanity.

20 Therefore I went about to cause my heart to despair of all the labour which I took under the sun.

21 For there is a man whose labour is in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in equity; yet to a man that hath not laboured therein shall he leave it for his portion. This also is vanity and a great evil.

22 For what hath man of all his labour, and of the vexation of his heart, wherein he hath laboured under the sun?

23 For all his days are sorrows, and his travail grief; yea, his heart taketh not rest in the night. This is also vanity.

24 There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.

25 For who can eat, or who else can hasten hereunto, more than I?

26 For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit.

  1. Verse 26 VOICE “To those who seek to please God, He gives wisdom and knowledge and joyfulness; but to those who are wicked, God keeps them busy harvesting and storing up for those in whom He delights. But even this is fleeting; it’s like trying to embrace the wind.” GO after Jesus, not this world!

Mark 8:36 CEV says “What will you gain, if you own the whole world but destroy yourself?”

Matthew 16:26 NLT “And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul?[a] Is anything worth more than your soul?”

  2. 26 To those who seek to please God, He gives wisdom and knowledge and joyfulness; but to those who are wicked, God keeps them busy harvesting and storing up for those in whom He delights. But even this is fleeting; it’s like trying to embrace the wind. Voice

    Proverbs 13:22
A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children’s children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just. KJV

  3. 15 Then said I in my heart, As it happeneth to the fool, so it happeneth even to me; and why was I then more wise? Then I said in my heart, that this also is vanity.
16 For there is no remembrance of the wise more than of the fool for ever; seeing that which now is in the days to come shall all be forgotten. And how dieth the wise man? as the fool.

I have had conversations with people who were under the impression that due to their faith, that meant their life would be without trouble, it doesn’t say that anywhere in the word of God. It is too easy to have the mindset that is entitled, God truly owes us nothing…while we labor for him, it is to pay off the debt that he paid for us. We should likewise be all the wiser for it, to know we deserve nothing but death, and everything we have is a blessing to he grateful for.

  4. Vanity & Vexation
11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour
that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.

Whatever we do in life ,whatever our skills or abilities are. We must do as unto to the Lord. Except the Lord builds the house then we are laboring in vain. Every aspect of our life is to be used for the glory of God. Lest our gifting become vanity, pride, too pretty for God’s intervention. We cannot separate what God calls us to from what our position in the world has us do. This earth will soon pass away.
People die unexpectedly what will they have left will it be a little a lot of vanity or will it be a mark a distinction of a jewel a reminded word of wisdom. Yes all is vanity in this world but we can make a difference on a world that is vexed without a hope . We must GO and lead the lost at any cost. I must take a look at my self daily in His mirror the Word and be sure I am reflecting His Glory and not my own.

  5. 19 And who knoweth whether he shall be a wise man or a fool? yet shall he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shewed myself wise under the sun. This is also vanity.

There’s a Spanish saying: Nadie save para quien trabaja.

  6. 1 I said in mine heart, Go to now, I will prove thee with mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure: and, behold, this also is vanity.

STAY HUMBLE in the lord. Your works are only possible through Jesus not through you, for your hands work because the lord makes em work. Jesus has all power and authority and all things are done through him and for him, so he’s kinda involved in everything, and that is why it is ignorant to stay vain through all our achievements and good works. Jesus is the reason! Thank you Jesus.

  7. Solomon is spoken of as the wisest man that ever lived, and yet he was continually drawn to the folly he knew should be avoided. Yet even after delving into them, he declares ‘Then I saw that wisdom excelleth folly, as far as light excelleth darkness.’ He had seen each, he had wondered whether the path of labor and wisdom was truly the best, he even went so far as to test the grace of God and see for himself, and wisdom prevailed! Notice it was not just a little bit better, he compared wisdom to the light and folly to the darkness.. an interesting analogy considering the spiritual darkness of those in the world.

We of the light do not need to go back into darkness to come to this same conclusion. Many of us came out of that darkness already and can testify of our appreciation of the light, but for those who are blessed to grow up in the truth, the greater wisdom learns from the mistakes of others rather than repeating them ourselves. We don’t have to experience every form of sin to appreciate good’s grace. Paul already addressed this when posing the question, shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? He responded with a fervent God forbid!

The wavering mind also falls into the same despair as Solomon declares. What’s going to happen to everything ‘I’ did when I’m gone? He allowed himself to experience the folly of sin and it affected his very perspective. If I truly believe that God is directing my life, it is not about me, it is about him. That mindset is important because I know that whatsoever God doeth, it shall be forever! The work of labor in his kingdom has as eternal harvest. What I do for myself in these fleeting moments of life isn’t really going to matter, so let my mind be made up to serve the master that’s going to make a difference! Allow his wisdom and his vision to direct my steps and he will take care of anything that truly matters! We don’t even have to worry about it because he is in control and he is faithful!

“Yea, I hated all my labour which I had taken under the sun: because I should leave it unto the man that shall be after me. And who knoweth whether he shall be a wise man or a fool? yet shall he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shewed myself wise under the sun. This is also vanity.”

    Ecclesiastes 2:18-19

Wow, think about it…You work and labor and when it’s time to die you cannot take the money and stuff with you so you have to leave it behind to the next man. If there is alot of money left behind, the majority of the time there is alot of fighting for that money. Close brothers and sisters will split entire families for the sake of arguing over money. Then once they get the money, it’s gone very quickly. Vanity all vanity.

  9. GLORY TO GOD

24 There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.

Witnessing the loss and devastation of our fellow Americans and Texans this week has reminded me of the vain value we often place on possessions. When we see that it can all be gone in moments, it is then that we realize the true value of necessities.

Nourishment and a good attitude will bring us to the spirit of being thankful to the LORD for all that HIS hand has provided for us.

JESUS today I pray you help us to maintain our perspective on the vanity of possessions and the value of LIFE with you.

  10. 26 To the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering in storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

  11. Ecclesiastes 2:11, “Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.”

As we have heard many times, “Only what we DO (LABOUR) for Christ will last.”
Heb. 6:10 says, “For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and LABOUR of Love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and DO (LABOUR) minister.”
1 Cor. 15:58 says, “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your LABOUR is not in vain in the Lord.”

  12. 26 For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit.

I think that anything we do in our own strength is vain, and the thought patterns we use when laboring, what is the motive? If everything we do, we do to glorify God, then its not vanity, but the moment we exalt our motives above humility and service it becomes vain, I dont want to be vain, I want to please God and be a servant. Lord please help me to be a servant and serve with a servants heart and not be vain and puffed up!
    iblessyouinthenameoftheLord

  13. 24 A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in their own toil. This too, I see, is from the hand of God, 25 for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment? 26 To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

“For without him who can find enjoyment?” Amen!!! No matter what we do or acclompish if we don’t know Jesus we will always have a void in our hearts! There is nothing better than to please God than ourselves!!! Watching videos and testimonies from the Hurricane, its beautiful to see that many people thank God, confess He is still good even if they lost everything, and sing to Him!!! That’s true praise right there, praising God in the bad times!! We might seem like we’re in a storm but everything happens for the good to those that love Him!!! No other name like Jesus!!! Let’s chase Jesus and not the meaningless things!!

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28

  14. 25 For who can eat and who can have enjoyment without Him? (AMP)

Anything we do without God, without the purpose of serving Him and doing what He has called us to, it’s all in vain. I pray the Lord would lead us everyday to do His will and that we would purpose in our hearts to serve Him somehow in all that we do.

  15. 11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.

What good is worldly gain, if I lose my soul? This song came to mind today while reading this chapter:

More than security, more than success
If I should have to choose one thing, I’ll take Jesus o’er the rest
And if I could attain the goal
To gain this world and all it holds
Then if I should lose my soul
    I have lost it all…….

For above all else I must be saved, above all else I must be saved
So whatever you have to do to me, don’t let me be lost for eternity
Above all else I must be saved

  16. 11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.

Before this particular verse the writer goes through all these riches, blessings and benefits he has been able to experience by being the King. He list them one by one but after all this verse 11 is the conclusion. At the end of the day the writer said it was ALL not some but ALL was vanity and vexation of spirit and that there was no profit in it. That goes to show how important it is to know whats really important in life and not allow the world to tell us what we should pursue in life.

  17. 18-19 Yea, I hated all my labour which I had taken under the sun: because I should leave it unto the man that shall be after me. And who knoweth whether he shall be a wise man or a fool? yet shall he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shewed myself wise under the sun. This is also vanity.

As parents we want the best for our children. We want them to have the best things in life; maybe things that we could not afford or opportunities that we did not have. Maybe a higher education, a natural talent to enjoy sports or participate in the arts. Maybe a deeper more meaningful relationship with God. What can we do to help our children achieve these goals? I am going to focus on carnal things today. If we work hard and leave a substantial inheritance for our children will they have the knowledge of how to take care it and live within their means? Studies show the majority do not.

They did not have to work for it. They have no skin in the game as the saying goes. Thus, what is easily gained is easily lost. So, should we spend so much time building an inheritance for those who may not appreciate it? Now, for the spiritual side: we cannot live their life for them; thus their relationship with God is entirely up to them. We are instructed to train them and provide them with the tools to build a relationship but ultimately it is their decision as to the depth of their relationship.

  18. “I said to myself, “Come on, let’s try pleasure. Let’s look for the ‘good things’ in life.” But I found that this, too, was meaningless.

But as I looked at everything I had worked so hard to accomplish, it was all so meaningless—like chasing the wind. There was nothing really worthwhile anywhere.

For who can eat or enjoy anything apart from him?”
    ‭‭Ecclesiastes‬ ‭2:1, 11, 25‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Anything we do apart from Him is meaningless. We could be the richest person in the world and own every possession there is but in the end that will not matter, because when we stand before God He will not be looking at what we owned but at our hearts and what we did for His kingdom!

  19. 24 There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour.

  20. 18I came to hate all my hard work here on earth, for I must leave to others everything I have earned.

If you work you have earned all that you have. One should never hate to work, you do so to provide for you and family. It should give you a sense of accomplishment. You should strive to leave your children better off than you were as a child. As parents we have to show our children to go and work for a living, and they will appreciate their possessions and accomplishments.

  21. 11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.

When you’ve gained it all and look at it all as Solomon did here, he realized he had not profited from it. He continues to say wisdom had not left him but I don’t see him seek God in these passages. God satisfies the inner man and soul and brings inner peace.

  22. I Love To Worship The Lord
In pleasure or wealth in wisdom or in personal accomplishments in the last analysis man has no control over his sistuation in his life

  23. 26 For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit.

We need to remember that everything we do, everything we have, everything we are, we owe it to God, not our own doing but God’s Blessings in our lives. He who claims everything they have is because of the labor of their hands is a fool.

  24. Josiah: 22 For what hath man of all his labour, and of the vexation of his heart, wherein he hath laboured under the sun?
This verse got me thinking how that if what we do is not for the kingdom of God then what we do is in vain. Yes we may have to GO to school or work but we can do witness and be a light. I GO to school because I am required to and I work hard so that I can learn. I play sports because I enjoy it. I play the trumpet because I enjoy it. However as I GO do these things I can also witness. So, let us GO BE A LIGHT TO THIS WORLD!

  25. So I decided there is nothing better than to enjoy food and drink and to find satisfaction in work. Then I realized that these pleasures are from the hand of God. For who can eat or enjoy anything apart from him?
    Ecclesiastes 2:24‭-‬25 NLT

  26. 24 There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.

Simply put work and you will be blessed.
    #GOdosomething by working

  27. 24 There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.

The Lord is the one that gives us daily benefits and fills our lives with all kinds of good gifts. We should remember where it all comes from and be grateful. It is His that gives you favor, wisdom and health to perform your job with which you are blessed.

  28. 24 There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour.

  29. 11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.

There is so much in this world that can take up so much of our time. It is so easy, to get caught up in life and take away time that used to be devoted to God. It is very obvious looking back to realize how much time could have been given to God, that was otherwise used for the cares of life. As is evident in this chapter, it can be frustrating when this realization sets in. I need to continually look to God and not allow the cares of this life to get in the way of my relationship with God!

  30. Time and money. Opportunity and ability. We never seem to have enough of these things. It’s easy to believe if we did, we could accomplish all the things we long to accomplish and life would be satisfying. The Teacher has everything a person needs for success, and he becomes one of the greatest, wisest and richest men who ever lived. He managed to do so much but “everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun”.His conclusion that experiences and accomplishments will not satisfy forces us to examine our own lives. He shares his revelation to enjoy life. Contentment shows sign of a satisfying and godly life (Php 4:11-2, 1 Ti 6:6). That is until he reviews the inevitability of death and seems to bleed the meaning out of life (vs18,21). His answer in Verse 24 is a good response, but it’s only partial. Something else is needed to fill his soul that things of this world like vanity, nor things we toil and strive for can give us. We need Jesus, he gives us purpose. Without him lives greatest pleasures are hollow, because the blessings of God are wonderful but there is nothing like the presence of an Almighty God, the blood that washes me clean and the Spirit that fills me. He is the source of all things we need subtracting God from the equation on leaves a negative result.

  31. “But as I looked at everything I had worked so hard to accomplish, it was all so meaningless—like chasing the wind. There was nothing really worthwhile anywhere.”
    ‭‭Ecclesiastes‬ ‭2:11‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Where’s only one thing that can satisfy ourselves. It is only Jesus that make life worthwhile. He gives us purpose to life. He feels the void that are soul longs for.

  32. 26 For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit.

    You reap what you sow.

  33. 24 There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.

May I turn my hand to good labor and enjoy it so I may walk in the path God has designed for my life.

  34. 26 For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit.

God has a plan for everybody not necessarily our plan.

  35. 11. Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had labored to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun. 12. And I turned myself to behold wisdom, and madness, and folly: for what can the man do that cometh after the king? even that which hath been already done. 13. Then I saw that wisdom excelleth folly, as far as light excelleth darkness. I LOVE YOU LORD !!!!

  36. Ecclesiastes 2:9 NLT
[9] So I became greater than all who had lived in Jerusalem before me, and my wisdom never failed me.
