Isaiah 5

Now will I sing to my wellbeloved a song of my beloved touching his vineyard. My wellbeloved hath a vineyard in a very fruitful hill:

And he fenced it, and gathered out the stones thereof, and planted it with the choicest vine, and built a tower in the midst of it, and also made a winepress therein: and he looked that it should bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes.

And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem, and men of Judah, judge, I pray you, betwixt me and my vineyard.

What could have been done more to my vineyard, that I have not done in it? wherefore, when I looked that it should bring forth grapes, brought it forth wild grapes?

And now go to; I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up; and break down the wall thereof, and it shall be trodden down:

And I will lay it waste: it shall not be pruned, nor digged; but there shall come up briers and thorns: I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.

For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah his pleasant plant: and he looked for judgment, but behold oppression; for righteousness, but behold a cry.

Woe unto them that join house to house, that lay field to field, till there be no place, that they may be placed alone in the midst of the earth!

In mine ears said the Lord of hosts, Of a truth many houses shall be desolate, even great and fair, without inhabitant.

10 Yea, ten acres of vineyard shall yield one bath, and the seed of an homer shall yield an ephah.

11 Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink; that continue until night, till wine inflame them!

12 And the harp, and the viol, the tabret, and pipe, and wine, are in their feasts: but they regard not the work of the Lord, neither consider the operation of his hands.

13 Therefore my people are gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge: and their honourable men are famished, and their multitude dried up with thirst.

14 Therefore hell hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure: and their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp, and he that rejoiceth, shall descend into it.

15 And the mean man shall be brought down, and the mighty man shall be humbled, and the eyes of the lofty shall be humbled:

16 But the Lord of hosts shall be exalted in judgment, and God that is holy shall be sanctified in righteousness.

17 Then shall the lambs feed after their manner, and the waste places of the fat ones shall strangers eat.

18 Woe unto them that draw iniquity with cords of vanity, and sin as it were with a cart rope:

19 That say, Let him make speed, and hasten his work, that we may see it: and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw nigh and come, that we may know it!

20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

21 Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!

22 Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink:

23 Which justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him!

24 Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust: because they have cast away the law of the Lord of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.

25 Therefore is the anger of the Lord kindled against his people, and he hath stretched forth his hand against them, and hath smitten them: and the hills did tremble, and their carcases were torn in the midst of the streets. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

26 And he will lift up an ensign to the nations from far, and will hiss unto them from the end of the earth: and, behold, they shall come with speed swiftly:

27 None shall be weary nor stumble among them; none shall slumber nor sleep; neither shall the girdle of their loins be loosed, nor the latchet of their shoes be broken:

28 Whose arrows are sharp, and all their bows bent, their horses’ hoofs shall be counted like flint, and their wheels like a whirlwind:

29 Their roaring shall be like a lion, they shall roar like young lions: yea, they shall roar, and lay hold of the prey, and shall carry it away safe, and none shall deliver it.

30 And in that day they shall roar against them like the roaring of the sea: and if one look unto the land, behold darkness and sorrow, and the light is darkened in the heavens thereof.

  1. Verse 16 AMP “But the Lord of hosts will be exalted in justice, And God, the Holy One, will show Himself holy in righteousness [through His righteous judgments].” This song came to mind when I read this verse:

    Jesus
The most beautiful Name of all Names
    Jesus
The only Name that brings healing and strength
    When I speak Your Name
    Mountains move
    Chains are loosed
    When I speak Your Name
    Darkness flees
It has no hold on me

    Jesus
Most beautiful Name that I know
    You’re the exalted One
    Jesus
    You have the power alone
    You lift the lowly one
    Jesus

    Jesus
The most wonderful Name of all Names
    Jesus
The only Name that brings freedom and hope
    When I speak Your name
    Mountains move
    Chains are loosed
    When I speak Your name
    Darkness flees
It has no hold on me

    Be exalted
    Be exalted
    Be exalted
    Higher and higher

    No other Name

  2. THE PATHWAY TO BONDAGE

13 Therefore my people are gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge: and their honourable men are famished, and their multitude dried up with thirst.

Because they have no KNOWLEDGE. There are certain areas of life that we are able to “get by” through being aware of or informed about, however concerning the LORD we must KNOW.

The prophet Hosea warned as well:

Hosea 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.

The apostle Paul established a principal of relationship:

    Philippians 3:10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;

    The psalmist pleaded:

Psalms 119:66 Teach me good judgment and knowledge: for I have believed thy commandments.

    Solomon instrusts us in knowledge:

Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Proverbs 1:22 How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?

Proverbs 1:29 For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD:

Proverbs 18:15 The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.

Proverbs 23:12 Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.

THE PATHWAY TO BONDAGE is through the neglect of the KNOWLEDGE of GOD. Being ignorant of facts or unaware of the laws of GOD will not be accecpted. JESUS expects people to seek HIM, to KNOW HIM. We are empowered to overcome THE PATHWAY TO BONDAGE by seeking to KNOW JESUS and the power of HIS RESURRECTION.

2Peter 1:2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,

The KNOWLEDGE of GOD is the accelerator and multiplication of GRACE and PEACE.

Lets GO KNOW GOD through Prayer and The WORD of GOD.

  3. 18. What sorrow for those who drag their sins behind them with ropes made of lies, who drag wickedness behind them like a cart! NLT

Let go of the rope of lies this world has been telling you! Lies like ‘people don’t change’, ‘once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic’, or even ‘you were born that way’.

Stop dragging your old past behind you everywhere you go! God is waiting on you to allow Him to empty your cart of the past sorrows and mistakes and fill it with joy, peace and love – what a trade! That’s how much He loves you!

    Matthew 11:28-30
    28. Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
    29. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
    30. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

  4. 25 Therefore is the anger of the Lord kindled against his people, and he hath stretched forth his hand against them, and hath smitten them: and the hills did tremble, and their carcases were torn in the midst of the streets. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
26 And he will lift up an ensign to the nations from far, and will hiss unto them from the end of the earth: and, behold, they shall come with speed swiftly:

A blind man can see it……

  5. Sometimes we are perhaps guilty of underestimating the value of God’s arm of protection and blessing upon our life. Notice that the response to Israel here is the very same admonition they received during Gideon’s time. ‘I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up; and break down the wall thereof, and it shall be trodden down: And I will lay it waste: it shall not be pruned, nor digged; but there shall come up briers and thorns: I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.’

All God has to do for us to be laid waste by the world is remove his hedge of protection and stop that heavenly flow of his blessings to our life. You ask why would God do that… just listen to his question: ‘What could have been done more to my vineyard, that I have not done in it? wherefore, when I looked that it should bring forth grapes, brought it forth wild grapes?’

God does not bless us so we can remain like the world. He wants us to be more like him! To stand out amongst the world so they have a light to turn to when they desire an escape from the darkness. That is why we’re here! We don’t just praise him in the sanctuary, we praise him and allow our life to testify of his goodness at all times!

  6. 24 Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust: because they have cast away the law of the Lord of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.

25 Therefore is the anger of the Lord kindled against his people, and he hath stretched forth his hand against them, and hath smitten them: and the hills did tremble, and their carcases were torn in the midst of the streets. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still. GOD IS GOOD

  7. 5 And now go to; I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up; and break down the wall thereof, and it shall be trodden down:

6 And I will lay it waste: it shall not be pruned, nor digged; but there shall come up briers and thorns: I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.

The Lord planted the vineyard and did everything He could for it to produce good fruit, however the vineyard had a mind of it’s own, and made it’s own choices and therefore wild fruit grew instead of the righteous fruit that the Lord planted. This caused the Lord to step back away from the vineyard and remove His hand.

His people was the vineyard that is being written about (Israel). They made choices that excluded the Lord and in exchange He removed His hand from their lives, causing them pain and heartache.

We must be careful the decisions we make have lasting results. We must be mindful of the Word of God when making decisions in every aspect of our lives so that our choices does not cause the Lord to step away from us, remove His hand of protection and we get out on a limb all by ourselves with no one.

  8. 20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

We live in a society today that wants to call good evil and evil good. We live in a society that wants to demonize those who have standards and believe in right and wrong. Its time more than ever for the apostolic church to rise up and say enough! We will stand for the righteousness of God and we will not be intimidated by a evil world!

  9. 12 …But they do not regard the work of the Lord,
Nor consider the operation of His hands.

People live their lives, blessing daily. But they dont consider the works of God, and how hes been there. See the big picture, the vision.

  10. What more could I have done for my vineyard that I have not oready done?
When I expected sweet grapes, why did my vineyard give me bitter grapes?
    Isaiah 5:4 NLT

Meditating on this two questions I recognized that the Lord has been faithful to us his children. I often here my pastor preaching growth and fruits. We all has been safe for a purpose and it is to be the instruments in the Lord’s hands to communicate the good news and reach this world .

Early in the spring this year I planted small garden. I planted tomatoes and peppers and I placed them in a estrategic location for the Sun to reflect the majority of the day since the tomatoes would need full daylight. I took care of them by watering, removed the weeds that grew around then, protected them from the animals. They grew beautifully but when the time came for them to give fruit, they failed to give fruit. They only grew tall but no fruit. So I decided to remve them. On the other hand the peppers were bearing fruit, when I removed the tomato plants, the pepper plants gave even more fruit.

  11. 8 Woe unto them that join house to house, that lay field to field, till there be no place, that they may be placed alone in the midst of the earth!

9 In mine ears said the Lord of hosts, Of a truth many houses shall be desolate, even great and fair, without inhabitant.

  12. And he will lift up an ensign to the nations from far, and will hiss unto them from the end of the earth: and, behold, they shall come with speed swiftly: None shall be weary nor stumble among them; none shall slumber nor sleep; neither shall the girdle of their loins be loosed, nor the latchet of their shoes be broken:

Man to think that even among the World we can chose to stand up for what we believe in. I know that God has called me from the world to work for His kingdom and bring the lost from out of their pit to His light. Thank you Jesus for opening my eyes.

  13. 16 But the Lord of hosts shall be exalted in judgment, and God that is holy shall be sanctified in righteousness.
Talking about the end is mention a lot in this book and you see it more as you read one of this that comes out to me that mention a lot is on that day Jesus alone will be exalted the end is near and I don’t want to wait to praise him i Will praise him now he coming for his bridge soon he looking for people that sever him with all their mind and with all their heart and soul

  14. iLove to Go Blog
1 Now will I sing to my wellbeloved a song of my beloved touching his vineyard. My wellbeloved hath a vineyard in a very fruitful hill:

WOW, this scripture appears to have come straight out of the Song of Solomon. Scriptures like these prove the love of God towards his people. The Lord looks at us like we are a very fruitful hill. The thing we must all remember is to produce fruit. It’s not always easy, but it is possible to bear fruit even in barren dry places.

  15. 20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

This is where the world is today and it is so prevalent that students in college today seem to have no tolerance for a conservative Christain perspective. However, it is the word of God that tells us God’s point of view and with the youth of today becoming far removed from it, the youth and college age Christians must be an example and witness to them. I don’t mean argue, I mean tell them them what God can do, what he has done for you or others. Be ready to teach when they ask questions. There is a harvest upon us and we must reach those we can.

  16. Isaiah 5:13
“Therefore my people are gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge; and their honourable men are famished, and their multitude dried up with thirst.”

This is why it is important to read and study God’s Word. So that, we’ll have knowledge of it. It will keep us from being taken captives and famished, and it will satisfy our thirsty souls.

GO GROW in the grace and knowledge of our LORD and SAVIOUR Jesus Christ.

  17. 12 They furnish wine and lovely music at their grand parties – lyre and harp, tambourine and flute – but they never think about the Lord or notice what he is doing. (NLT)

Well doesn’t this describe our generations today. We think we’re all fine and dandy doing what makes us feel good, living our own lives because hey that’s what the world advocates for now – be your own person. And as for everyone else, we must accept it – hey just join the party and everyone do what you want!

We have a whole world around us who never that never thinks about God or even notices what He’s doing around them. And if they do notice it, they become angry and offended because they do not understand the goodness of God. That’s where we come in – share the good news!! What a shame it would be for there to be more unrighteous swallowed up by death than righteous to be lifted up with Christ. It’s time to do our job and birth revival.

  18. 20. Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! 21. Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight! 22. Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink.

  19. “Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust: because they have cast away the law of the Lord of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.”
    ‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭5:24‬ ‭KJV‬‬

You better warn the Lost what wick living does, what it leads to. Fire and eternity, tell them sin will never blossom only to dust. Let them know where their life is headed if they continue to live the way they do. TIME IS SHORT
iBless you in the name of the lord Jesus Christ

  20. 11 What sorrow for those who get up early in the morning looking for a drink of alcohol and spend long evenings drinking wine to make themselves flaming drunk.

I knew some men that would start drinking in the morning, afternoon and night. Alcohol was like water for them. It must have given them a sense of control or masculinity. They would get upset when there was no more, or when no one would buy them more alcohol. I just knew, I never wanted to be like that. I thank God, even though I saw it all the time, it did not effect my decision to join them!

  21. why do we lie to ourselves thinking that we have learned all we needed to know and then start rebelling from God because we think we reached the finishing point and there isn’t anything can do that would surprise us. yet when we read the bible first Hosea and then Isaiah reminds us of what we already knew but we are trying to ignore. when he comes back he will purge all things that aren’t good in his site and those of us that aren’t with him will suffer.
so lets join him, follow him and rejoice him from into eternity full of happiness and love.

  22. The Vineyard of Wild Grapes
Isaiah 5:1-7 It is sad with a soul, when, instead of the grapes of humility, meekmess, love, patience, and contempt of the world, for which God looks, there are the wild grapes of pride, passion, discontent, and malice, and contempt of God; instead of the grapes of praying and praising, the wild grapes of cursing and swearing. Let us bring forth fruit with patience, that in the end we may obtain everlasting life.

  23. 20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

  24. Isaiah 5:7 Message
Do you get it? The vineyard of God-of-the-Angel-Armies
    is the country of Israel.
All the men and women of Judah
are the garden he was so proud of.
He looked for a crop of justice
and saw them murdering each other.
He looked for a harvest of righteousness
and heard only the moans of victims.

Oh. That we would encourage one another as we work together fir the Kingdom of God. There should have been praises going up instead of the moaning of victims. Oh Lord help me to be cautious in all I say and do lest I top woukd be guilty if murder.
    In Jesus Name

  25. To know Gos is important. When you truly know who Jesus is, there is no need to allow the things of the enemy pull you down. There is great power in knowing who Jesus is.

  26. 14 Therefore hell hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure: and their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp, and he that rejoiceth, shall descend into it.

Hell has enlarged because iniquity has abound.

Therefore Sheol enlarges its throat and opens wide its enormous jaws, and down go Zion’s dignitaries, her masses, her crowds, and those who carouse in her! CSV

Anything that draws Zion’s attention away from God is sin. As the church our eyes and passions must be fixed on Jesus. The pleasures of this world are growing while the church remains stagnant, this should not be so. We must engage in the spirit and allow Zion to travail in intercessory pray and disengage from life’s pleasures before the great city we all love is engulfed in sin.

  27. And the mean man shall be brought down, and the mighty man shall be humbled, and the eyes of the lofty shall be humbled:
16 But the Lord of hosts shall be exalted in judgment, and God that is holy shall be sanctified in righteousness

for some reason, this makes me think of when people mistreat us and attempt to bring us down in order to exalt themselves, we must keep in mind that the lord is our strength and our defender. He fights our battles

  28. 20-24: Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!  Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!  Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink:  Which justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him!  Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust: because they have cast away the law of the Lord of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.

I need to stay true to God! In all I do I need to be careful about what I think, say and allow into my heart! I do not want to risk going AGAINST God or anything that He has said or wills! Anything in this world is not worth the risk of losing His blessing, love, or hand upon my life! God is worthy of all we can give! Praise the Lord for His mercy, His grace, His love!

  29. Josiah:24 Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust: because they have cast away the law of the Lord of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.
God, and God alone is the way. We can not outgive God. God died on the cross for our sins. He wants a relationship with you. He wants a relationship with me. When we stand upon the word out God and are founded on the rock this world can not knock us down unless we let it. However if you despise God’s law trials can destroy you and this world can too. So, let us GO BE A LIGHT to this world and always listen to the word of God!

  30. You are in for trouble! The lies you tell are like ropes by which you drag along sin and evil.(Isaiah 5:18 CEV)

Evil-doers draw themselves not to just to sin but to the temptations of the world, or by being persuaded to doing something or believeing something of someone that is wicked, but are actively seeking sin to please themselves. Also those who set their hearts upon the world, will be disappointed for it is hollow, and not everything that glitters is gold. Here is the highlight of woe to those who seek a direction away from God to be lost and delight in sin attracts his anger and judgment.

  31. 2 And he fenced it, and gathered out the stones thereof, and planted it with the choicest vine, and built a tower in the midst of it, and also made a winepress therein: and he looked that it should bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes.

WORK!! In order to have a harvest first have to work, sometimes, a lot. To do all this work took most likely years. So why then do we think that we should be any different?

  32. Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

There will be people that will confuse and control the lost they will call their sin a good things a way to have fun their will be false prophets we need to keep our eyes on God

  33. 16 But the Lord of hosts shall be exalted in judgment, and God that is holy shall be sanctified in righteousness.

The name of Jesus be lifted high… lifted high…lifted high
The name of Jesus be lifted high… lifted high…lifted high
    Im this place…

Its not just a song. We should always lift the name of Jesus up. He is the reason we live and have our being! There os power in his name!!

  34. 13 Therefore my people are gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge: and their honourable men are famished, and their multitude dried up with thirst.

The word is available to whom is ready and wanting to discover truth and salvation. We should not allow for us to be bound and be captive when the Word tells us the things to watch for, the things that bring life.

  35. 1 Now will I sing to my wellbeloved a song of my beloved touching his vineyard. My wellbeloved hath a vineyard in a very fruitful hill:

Fruitful was the vineyard until it started producing bitter sweet. Life will bring much challenge some will choose to do good and others evil.

  36. 21 Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!

This scripture just spoke to me again about about wisdom and self pride. Because too many I meet in this world have this scripture apply to them. Doing what they think is wise and prudent. May I not be like them or this world, but instead relying on God’s will and way for my life.

  37. 20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

Every Generation has had their own “evil.” Yet this generation , WOW. If we took what the bible says and put it next to what has happened the past few years. We see this passage so clearly. Marriages, families, relationships, things, ideas. They all have come up for question. This is why it is imperative for teachers to not cut corners when it comes to teaching this generation. Knowledge is power, Godly Knowledge will change this world.

  38. 20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

What of this generation? Who is teaching our children the values of God? If it’s only up to the church. We don’t get this generation but a couple of hours a week at best. Parents have neglected their responsibility to teach their children the Godly values and his principles. This is why we must pray for our sunday school teachers. We have been given an almost impossible task. Yet with God all Things are Possible.

  39. Israelites use the word woe when mourning the death of a friend or relative. Isaiahs emphasis of woe foretells the nation’s death

    • ..and judgment. In this chapter Isaiah uses this device of repetition to underscore the impending doom. Jesus also uses the “woe” approach when he condemns the Pharisees. Using this approach he denounces 6 sins. We can change the woe are we mentality to a we are blessed praise to God.

  40. 18 Woe unto them that draw iniquity with cords of vanity, and sin as it were with a cart rope:

The mystery of iniquity was a great sermon for sin creeps up on you quiter than you think for that I why the lord is my strength and protector and knows when to giev me warning signs when I need a checkup from the neck up. Thank you Jesus!

  41. And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:

2 And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.

3 And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.

4 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.

5 His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.

6 And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.

7 Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.

It is very desirable when there is a marriage, to have Christ own and bless it. Those that would have Christ with them at their marriage, must invite him by prayer, and he will come. While in this world we sometimes find ourselves in straits, even when we think ourselves in fulness. There was want at a marriage feast. Those who are come to care for the things of the world, must look for trouble, and count upon disappointment. In our addresses to Christ, we must humbly spread our case before him, and then refer ourselves to him to do as he pleases. In Christ’s reply to his mother there was no disrespect. He used the same word when speaking to her with affection from the cross; yet it is a standing testimony against the idolatry of after-ages, in giving undue honours to his mother. His hour is come when we know not what to do. Delays of mercy are not denials of prayer. Those that expect Christ’s favours, must observe his orders with ready obedience. The way of duty is the way to mercy; and Christ’s methods must not be objected against. The beginning of Moses’ miracles was turning water into blood, Exodus 7:20; the beginning of Christ’s miracles was turning water into wine; which may remind us of the difference between the law of Moses and the gospel of Christ. He showed that he improves creature-comforts to all true believers, and make them comforts indeed. And Christ’s works are all for use. Has he turned thy water into wine, given thee knowledge and grace? it is to profit withal; therefore draw out now, and use it. It was the best wine. Christ’s works commend themselves even to those who know not their Author. What was produced by miracles, always was the best in its kind. Though Christ hereby allows a right use of wine, he does not in the least do away his own caution, which is, that our hearts be not at any time overcharged with surfeiting and drunkenness, Luke 21:34. Though we need not scruple to feast with our friends on proper occasions, yet every social interview should be so conducted, that we might invite the Redeemer to join with us, if he were now on earth; and all levity, luxury, and excess offend him.
