Jeremiah 35

The word which came unto Jeremiah from the Lord in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, saying,

Go unto the house of the Rechabites, and speak unto them, and bring them into the house of the Lord, into one of the chambers, and give them wine to drink.

Then I took Jaazaniah the son of Jeremiah, the son of Habaziniah, and his brethren, and all his sons, and the whole house of the Rechabites;

And I brought them into the house of the Lord, into the chamber of the sons of Hanan, the son of Igdaliah, a man of God, which was by the chamber of the princes, which was above the chamber of Maaseiah the son of Shallum, the keeper of the door:

And I set before the sons of the house of the Rechabites pots full of wine, and cups, and I said unto them, Drink ye wine.

But they said, We will drink no wine: for Jonadab the son of Rechab our father commanded us, saying, Ye shall drink no wine, neither ye, nor your sons for ever:

Neither shall ye build house, nor sow seed, nor plant vineyard, nor have any: but all your days ye shall dwell in tents; that ye may live many days in the land where ye be strangers.

Thus have we obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab our father in all that he hath charged us, to drink no wine all our days, we, our wives, our sons, nor our daughters;

Nor to build houses for us to dwell in: neither have we vineyard, nor field, nor seed:

10 But we have dwelt in tents, and have obeyed, and done according to all that Jonadab our father commanded us.

11 But it came to pass, when Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came up into the land, that we said, Come, and let us go to Jerusalem for fear of the army of the Chaldeans, and for fear of the army of the Syrians: so we dwell at Jerusalem.

12 Then came the word of the Lord unto Jeremiah, saying,

13 Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Go and tell the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, Will ye not receive instruction to hearken to my words? saith the Lord.

14 The words of Jonadab the son of Rechab, that he commanded his sons not to drink wine, are performed; for unto this day they drink none, but obey their father’s commandment: notwithstanding I have spoken unto you, rising early and speaking; but ye hearkened not unto me.

15 I have sent also unto you all my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them, saying, Return ye now every man from his evil way, and amend your doings, and go not after other gods to serve them, and ye shall dwell in the land which I have given to you and to your fathers: but ye have not inclined your ear, nor hearkened unto me.

16 Because the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have performed the commandment of their father, which he commanded them; but this people hath not hearkened unto me:

17 Therefore thus saith the Lord God of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring upon Judah and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the evil that I have pronounced against them: because I have spoken unto them, but they have not heard; and I have called unto them, but they have not answered.

18 And Jeremiah said unto the house of the Rechabites, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Because ye have obeyed the commandment of Jonadab your father, and kept all his precepts, and done according unto all that he hath commanded you:

19 Therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not want a man to stand before me for ever.

  1. 7 Neither shall ye build house, nor sow seed, nor plant vineyard, nor have any: but all your days ye shall dwell in tents; that ye may live many days in the land where ye be strangers.
    8 Thus have we obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab our father in all that he hath charged us, to drink no wine all our days, we, our wives, our sons, nor our daughters;
9 Nor to build houses for us to dwell in: neither have we vineyard, nor field, nor seed:
10 But we have dwelt in tents, and have obeyed, and done according to all that Jonadab our father commanded us.

Stayed in tents. Do you see that? They obeyed and sacrificed their comfort so that they stayed obedience.
Wherever God has called you to be and however uncomfortable you may get at any given point know there is a PURPOSE. There will always be a purpose and God will always one or another show you that purpose. These people sacrificed their comfort and stayed in tents rather than living in luxury and having vineyards and fields and a house to dwell in. They sacrificed all of that just to stay on course to stay accountable to stay true to who they serve. Let’s be an example to one another and respect who we serve and respect that there is purpose. I pray for peace in each and everyone’s lives today.
iBless you in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ!

  2. Verse 17 ESV “Therefore, thus says the Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I am bringing upon Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the disaster that I have pronounced against them, because I have spoken to them and they have not listened, I have called to them and they have not answered.” The Lord has spoken and has called to us…..will you answer and hear the word of the Lord? Obedience is a choice, just like the Rechabites had. You can either choose to be faithful and obedient or not listen and rebel! The Rechabites received a promise from the Lord for their obedience, while disobedience brought forth disaster.

  3. Jeremiah 35:17-19
    17) Therefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring upon Judah and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the evil I have pronounced against them: because I have spoken unto them, but they have not heard; and I have called unto them, but they have not answered.
    18) And Jeremiah said into the house of the Rechabites, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Because ye have obeyed the commandment of Jonadab your father, and kept all his precepts, and done according unto all that he hath commanded you:
    19) Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not want a man to stand before me for ever.

Obedience to God and His Word brings a reward.
Disobedience to God and His Word brings judgment.

  4. 16 The descendants of Jehonadab son of Recab have obeyed their ancestor completely, but you have refused to listen to me.’ (NLT)

Funny how we are faithful beings, but more often than not, we end up faithful to the lesser things. We say we are faithful, but are we faithful to the things God has asked of us? We may be doing good, not drinking and obeying what others say – we’re living a good life, not being “bad” per se, just being a good person. We’re faithful to what we find necessary when God all along is calling us to Him. He wants our faithfulness, He wants our time and commitment too. The decision is ours – what do our priorities look like? How faithful are we to God and His Kingdom?

  5. 18 And Jeremiah said unto the house of the Rechabites, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Because ye have obeyed the commandment of Jonadab your father, and kept all his precepts, and done according unto all that he hath commanded you:
19 Therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not want a man to stand before me for ever.

  6. 6 But they said, We will drink no wine: for Jonadab the son of Rechab our father commanded us, saying, Ye shall drink no wine, neither ye, nor your sons for ever:

7 Neither shall ye build house, nor sow seed, nor plant vineyard, nor have any: but all your days ye shall dwell in tents; that ye may live many days in the land where ye be strangers.

    8 Thus have we obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab our father in all that he hath charged us, to drink no wine all our days, we, our wives, our sons, nor our daughters;

9 Nor to build houses for us to dwell in: neither have we vineyard, nor field, nor seed:

    The act of obedience
But Samuel replied, “What is more pleasing to the Lord : your burnt offerings and sacrifices or your obedience to his voice? Listen! Obedience is better than sacrifice, and submission is better than offering the fat of rams.
    1 Samuel 15:22 NLT

  7. 15 I have sent also unto you all my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them, saying, Return ye now every man from his evil way, and amend your doings, and go not after other gods to serve them, and ye shall dwell in the land which I have given to you and to your fathers: but ye have not inclined your ear, nor hearkened unto me.
God will send people. Prophets, teachers, preachers our way to teach us the way to go and how we should live. The choice is ours as to if we will listen or not. Let us make the choice to listen with open ears to the word of the Lord in our lives.

  8. 13 Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Go and tell the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, Will ye not receive instruction to hearken to my words? saith the Lord.

  9. 16 Because the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have performed the commandment of their father, which he commanded them; but this people hath not hearkened unto me:

When we honor our parents, there is great reward. When we honor God and his Word, there is reward. For His Kingdom to Come, we must Honor Him and his Word.

  10. THY KINGDOM COME
    OBEY THE KINGS VOICE

16 Because the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have performed the commandment of their father, which he commanded them; but this people hath not hearkened unto me:

We witness here the heart of the LORD through the prophet. Our all knowing, all eternal GOD is identifying the carnality and disobedience of HIS own.

It must deeply grieve the heart of GOD to see that people who do not even profess HIM as Lord will the instructions of their god or Leaders. But, the people who profess HIM as Lord will not be obedient to the commands of the LORD or HIS Preachers.

Acts 5:29 Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.

JESUS puts up with much of our folly, but only for a season.

1 Peter 4:17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?

Let get right with the voice of the King and HIS Kingdom.

Seek ye FIRST The Kingdom of GOD.

  11. 16 Because the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have performed the commandment of their father, which he commanded them; but this people hath not hearkened unto me:

The Rechabites followed the commandment of their father to a tee down through generations, yet the Israelites had the Lord speaking to them through the prophets of old and refused to follow His commandments. Obedience protected the Rechabites, and disobedience caused the Lord to withdraw His covering and evil came to Israelites.

It’s our choice? I must search my own heart to determine what is my commitment level to obedience? It is a matter of live or death.

  12. Because the sons of Jehonadab the son of Rechab have performed the commandment of their father, which he commanded them; but this people hath not hearkened unto me:
    Jeremiah 35:16 KJV

Therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not want a man to stand before me for ever.
    Jeremiah 35:19 KJV
God honored those who stuck to the convictions they were taught. God honored that by promising a man would always stand before Him or have access to Him. What a blessing, the blessings of obedience. Our convictions can keep us close to God and bring rewards.

  13. 16 Because the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have performed the commandment of their father, which he commanded them; but this people hath not hearkened unto me:

It is difficult to leave traditions set up by a family. Their father had commanded them to live a certain way they obeyed. Yet there is a greater voice calling out and we must hearjen to it. God’s voice must supersede above all others for His voice is the One that will lead us right into the blessings of His will and not ours.
Gentleness will come with wisdom to lead the aged steeped in tradition they do want to know the real voice of God and what His Word says.

  14. …. 35:18,An Jeremías said unto the house of the Rechabites,Thus sai th the Lord Of hosts, the God of Israel; Because ye have obeyed the commandments of Jonadab your father, and kept all his precepts, and done according unto all that he had commanded you: …..
    I love ❤️ the LORD
    I SUBMIT
    I reap.

    Your Kingdom com
    YOUR will BE DONE!

    • Search me oh Lord , show me my heart, for it is my desire to have a willing heart…..
      I repent
      I obey
      I persevere
      I reap
      I DANCE

  15. And Jeremiah said unto the house of the Rechabites, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Because ye have obeyed the commandment of Jehonadab your father, and kept all his precepts, and done according unto all that he hath commanded you: Therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not want a man to stand before me for ever.
    Jeremiah 35:18‭-‬19 KJV

Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
    Exodus 20:12 KJV

Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.
    Hebrews 13:17 KJV

God expects and honors obedience. He gives us fathers in the flesh and spiritual fathers (pastors) in the church to test our willingness to obey. If we cannot obey these fathers that we can see, how shall we ever claim that we are obedient to God?

  16. We can read in Chapter 35 that the Rechabites CHOSE to follow the commands of their ancestors. Simply their family. It was the norm for them, never to drink and only to live in tents. Simple obedience. They didn’t sway nor did they deny their commitments, they persevered their obedience.

Rechabited CHOSE to LOVE their ancestors and obey their traditions without questions.

Love is a CHOICE and it represents COMMITMENT.

Deut 30:20 “That thou mayest love the LORD thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of thy days: that thou mayest dwell in the land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.”

When we CHOSE to LOVE God. Truly LOVE Him, we’ll simply obey. There will be no need of explanation, it’ll be the norm for you to be in His Kingdom for its where you CHOSE to be, it’s where you LONG to be.

CHOSE to Love GOD and His Kingdom, and we see from Chapter 35 that the obedience will bring the blessings.

  17. iLove the Kingdom

Jeremiah 35:2 Go unto the house of the Rechabites, and speak unto them, and bring them into the house of the Lord, into one of the chambers, and give them wine to drink.

This chapter is full of great principles…but one that really sticks out today is the above mentioned verse. God told the prophet to go to the Rechabites and offer something that was forbidden to them and went against their own personal conviction because of the commandment of their father. Even though God told Jeremiah to take the Rechabites to the house of the Lord and give them drink didn’t exempt them out of their oath with their earthly father. They chose to remain loyal to their father and ignore the word of the true prophet who heard the genuine voice of God. God did not punish the Rechabites, but to the contrary He honored them and used them as a great example of faithfulness and obedience.

We should always remain faithful to the pastor God has placed over us. Even if a true prophet of God walks into the church and prophesies with the genuine voice of God and tells us “thus saith the Lord…” we must always run it by the pastor first; as he is the man that will answer to God for us. You never know…God might just be seeing if He can honor us as He did the Rechabites.

  18. 13 Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Go and tell the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, Will ye not receive instruction to hearken to my words? saith the Lord.
14 The words of Jonadab the son of Rechab, that he commanded his sons not to drink wine, are performed; for unto this day they drink none, but obey their father’s commandment: notwithstanding I have spoken unto you, rising early and speaking; but ye hearkened not unto me.

Their carnal ears were open, but not their spiritual ears. They obeyed their father’s commands but did not hear the Lord trying to speak unto them. Humbling ourselves thru fasting will help us to stop listening with carnal ears to fleshly wants and help us open our spiritual ears to the Lord’s desire to let his kingdom come…first in us, then to those we can reach.

  19. 17“Therefore, this is what the LORD God of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘Because you refuse to listen or answer when I call, I will send upon Judah and Jerusalem all the disasters I have threatened.’”

Yes, we all are guilty of this, refusing to listen/obey God, our parents or authority. Its a prideful spirit telling you, “you do what you want”, or “no one is gonna tell me what to do”. With that attitude comes consequences, and those who refuse will end up regretting not listening to their parents/authority figures in their lives.

  20. 18 And Jeremiah said unto the house of the Rechabites, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Because ye have obeyed the commandment of Jonadab your father, and kept all his precepts, and done according unto all that he hath commanded you:

19 Therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not want a man to stand before me for ever.

  21. 19 Therefore thus saith the Lord of host, the God of Israel, jonadab the son of Rechab shall not want a man to stand before me forever.

  22. Time after time I sent you prophets, who told you, “Turn from your wicked ways, and start doing things right. Stop worshiping other gods so that you might live in peace here in the land I have given to you and your ancestors.” But you would not listen to me or obey me.(Jeremiah 35:15 NLT)

God can send prophets to anyone not just to the Recabites. God told the Recabites time after time and they refuse to listen to him. He even told the Recabites to turn away from there wicked ways and start doing things right. God is giving us a chance to turn away from our wicked ways, repent and turn to him.

  23. 16 Because the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have performed the commandment of their father, which he commanded them; but this people hath not hearkened unto me:

17 Therefore thus saith the Lord God of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring upon Judah and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the evil that I have pronounced against them: because I have spoken unto them, but they have not heard; and I have called unto them, but they have not answered.

18 And Jeremiah said unto the house of the Rechabites, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Because ye have obeyed the commandment of Jonadab your father, and kept all his precepts, and done according unto all that he hath commanded you:

  24. 18 And Jeremiah said unto the house of the Rechabites, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Because ye have obeyed the commandment of Jonadab your father, and kept all his precepts, and done according unto all that he hath commanded you:

19 Therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not want a man to stand before me for ever.

Because of their obedience they were blessed and put as an eternal example for generations to read and learn.

  25. 7 Neither shall ye build house, nor sow seed, nor plant vineyard, nor have any: but all your days ye shall dwell in tents; that ye may live many days in the land where ye be strangers.

Many of our blessings are not sure to our deserving lifestyle like we would like to think, it is the sure Mercy and love of God that comes down on us, many a time it’s because someone has prayed on our behalf. This is my sobering thought when my life is filling with blessing, that it’s got nothing to do with my righteousness, but it is because he just loves me

  26. Then Jeremiah turned to the Recabites and said, “This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘You have obeyed your ancestor Jehonadab in every respect, following all his instructions.’ Therefore, this is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘Jehonadab son of Recab will always have descendants who serve me.’”
    Jeremiah 35:18‭-‬19 NLT

  27. “Therefore, this is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘Jehonadab son of Recab will always have descendants who serve me.’””
    ‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭35:19‬ ‭NLT‬‬

These people were rewarded for there faithfulness instructions given by there ancestors. How much more should we do that onto God. Everything we do for Lord has purpose. In the end we will hear well done thy good and faithful servant.

“So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.”
    ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭15:58‬ ‭NLT‬‬

  28. 1 The word which came unto Jeremiah from the Lord in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, saying,

2 Go unto the house of the Rechabites, and speak unto them, and bring them into the house of the Lord, into one of the chambers, and give them wine to drink.

    3 Then I took Jaazaniah the son of Jeremiah, the son of Habaziniah, and his brethren, and all his sons, and the whole house of the Rechabites;

4 And I brought them into the house of the Lord, into the chamber of the sons of Hanan, the son of Igdaliah, a man of God, which was by the chamber of the princes, which was above the chamber of Maaseiah the son of Shallum, the keeper of the door:

5 And I set before the sons of the house of the Rechabites pots full of wine, and cups, and I said unto them, Drink ye wine.

    8 Thus have we obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab our father in all that he hath charged us, to drink no wine all our days, we, our wives, our sons, nor our daughters;

9 Nor to build houses for us to dwell in: neither have we vineyard, nor field, nor seed:

10 But we have dwelt in tents, and have obeyed, and done according to all that Jonadab our father commanded us.

11 But it came to pass, when Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came up into the land, that we said, Come, and let us go to Jerusalem for fear of the army of the Chaldeans, and for fear of the army of the Syrians: so we dwell at Jerusalem.

Jonadab was famous for wisdom and piety. He lived nearly 300 years before, 2 Kings 10:15. Jonadab charged his posterity not to drink wine. He also appointed them to dwell in tents, or movable dwelling: this would teach them not to think of settling any where in this world. To keep low, would be the way to continue long in the land where they were strangers. Humility and contentment are always the best policy, and men’s surest protection. Also, that they might not run into unlawful pleasures, they were to deny themselves even lawful delights. The consideration that we are strangers and pilgrims should oblige us to abstain from all fleshly lusts. Let them have little to lose, and then losing times would be the less dreadful: let them set loose to what they had, and then they might with less pain be stript of it. Those are in the best frame to meet sufferings who live a life of self-denial, and who despise the vanities of the world. Jonadab’s posterity observed these rules strictly, only using proper means for their safety in a time of general suffering.

  29. 18 And Jeremiah said unto the house of the Rechabites, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Because ye have obeyed the commandment of Jonadab your father, and kept all his precepts, and done according unto all that he hath commanded you:

19 Therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not want a man to stand before me for ever.

We all get rewarded for our obedience! Obedience is better than sacrifice! Lord he’ll me to daily obey your commands!

  30. 15 I have sent also unto you all my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them, saying, Return ye now every man from his evil way, and amend your doings, and go not after other gods to serve them, and ye shall dwell in the land which I have given to you and to your fathers: but ye have not inclined your ear, nor hearkened unto me.

God gives us many chances to obey Him. Let’s obey His voice the first time so we won’t have to go through many difficulties.

  31. 15 I have sent also unto you all my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them, saying, Return ye now every man from his evil way, and amend your doings, and go not after other gods to serve them, and ye shall dwell in the land which I have given to you and to your fathers: but ye have not inclined your ear, nor hearkened unto me.

  32. “And Jeremiah said unto the house of the Rechabites, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Because ye have obeyed the commandment of Jehonadab your father, and kept all his precepts, and done according unto all that he hath commanded you: Therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not want a man to stand before me for ever.”
    ‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭35:18-19‬ ‭KJV‬‬

God honors us when we do what we have been told.

  33. Jonadab helped purge the northern kingdom of Baal worship, and his ancestors model his devotion to righteousness (2Ki 10:15-28). The Recabites live as desert nomads and like the Nazirites (Nu 6:1-3), vow to obstain from wine, probably because it is abused in Baal worship. The Recabites move to Jerusalem when Nebuchadnezzar’s armies pillage the countryside. God uses their refusal to of Jerusalem’s wine as an object lesson for Judah. For years the Recabites had carefully regarded the rules of their ancestors, while the people of Judah had recklessly disregarded God’s commands.
