Jeremiah 37

And king Zedekiah the son of Josiah reigned instead of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim, whom Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah.

But neither he, nor his servants, nor the people of the land, did hearken unto the words of the Lord, which he spake by the prophet Jeremiah.

And Zedekiah the king sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, Pray now unto the Lord our God for us.

Now Jeremiah came in and went out among the people: for they had not put him into prison.

Then Pharaoh’s army was come forth out of Egypt: and when the Chaldeans that besieged Jerusalem heard tidings of them, they departed from Jerusalem.

Then came the word of the Lord unto the prophet Jeremiah saying,

Thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel; Thus shall ye say to the king of Judah, that sent you unto me to enquire of me; Behold, Pharaoh’s army, which is come forth to help you, shall return to Egypt into their own land.

And the Chaldeans shall come again, and fight against this city, and take it, and burn it with fire.

Thus saith the Lord; Deceive not yourselves, saying, The Chaldeans shall surely depart from us: for they shall not depart.

10 For though ye had smitten the whole army of the Chaldeans that fight against you, and there remained but wounded men among them, yet should they rise up every man in his tent, and burn this city with fire.

11 And it came to pass, that when the army of the Chaldeans was broken up from Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh’s army,

12 Then Jeremiah went forth out of Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin, to separate himself thence in the midst of the people.

13 And when he was in the gate of Benjamin, a captain of the ward was there, whose name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he took Jeremiah the prophet, saying, Thou fallest away to the Chaldeans.

14 Then said Jeremiah, It is false; I fall not away to the Chaldeans. But he hearkened not to him: so Irijah took Jeremiah, and brought him to the princes.

15 Wherefore the princes were wroth with Jeremiah, and smote him, and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe: for they had made that the prison.

16 When Jeremiah was entered into the dungeon, and into the cabins, and Jeremiah had remained there many days;

17 Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took him out: and the king asked him secretly in his house, and said, Is there any word from the Lord? And Jeremiah said, There is: for, said he, thou shalt be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.

18 Moreover Jeremiah said unto king Zedekiah, What have I offended against thee, or against thy servants, or against this people, that ye have put me in prison?

19 Where are now your prophets which prophesied unto you, saying, The king of Babylon shall not come against you, nor against this land?

20 Therefore hear now, I pray thee, O my lord the king: let my supplication, I pray thee, be accepted before thee; that thou cause me not to return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there.

21 Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah into the court of the prison, and that they should give him daily a piece of bread out of the bakers’ street, until all the bread in the city were spent. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

  1. 9 Thus saith the Lord; Deceive not yourselves, saying, The Chaldeans shall surely depart from us: for they shall not depart

We live in a world of great self-deception, Satan maybe our enemy but he always attacks from the outside and while it may be true that he causes deception, it is only when we allow ourselves to be deceived. I once heard a Japanese proverb stating that if you conquer the Enemy Within the enemy without can do you no harm. Eleanor Roosevelt also said that no one can hurt you without your own permission. Deception and offense are inner battles that we must continue to fight against. They are the root of division and we must learn to seek after absolute objective truth. Praying the helmet of salvation to protect our minds and the breastplate of righteousness to guard our hearts.

  2. “Then Pharaoh’s army was come forth out of Egypt: and when the Chaldeans that besieged Jerusalem heard tidings of them, they departed from Jerusalem.”
    ‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭37:5‬ ‭KJV‬‬
“At this time the army of Pharaoh Hophra of Egypt appeared at the southern border of Judah. When the Babylonian army heard about it, they withdrew from their siege of Jerusalem.”
    ‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭37:5‬ ‭NLT‬‬

When the pharaoh of Egypts army came to the border of Judah they turned around and left with their tails tucked between their legs.
We can get enemy in that state too. See the scripture says when they came besieged around Jerusalem they then fled. But the same verse in the NLT version says that they came to the southern border of Judah and that they fled because they heard Jerimiah wasn’t imprisoned.

“Thus saith the Lord; Deceive not yourselves, saying, The Chaldeans shall surely depart from us: for they shall not depart.”
    ‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭37:9‬ ‭KJV‬‬
““This is what the Lord says: Do not fool yourselves into thinking that the Babylonians are gone for good. They aren’t!”
    ‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭37:9‬ ‭NLT‬‬

See the enemy will flee when we send UP Judah but that doesn’t mean he’s gone forever because if you keep reading and see in verse 9 that the Lord says not to deceive yourself because your enemy WILL be back.
The importance of keeping our guard up can never be practiced enough. We know how to get rid of the enemy so maybe we should stay in a state of praise because that’s where the enemy don’t stand a chance.

iBless you in the name of Jesus Christ!

  3. Verse 2 ERV “But Zedekiah, his servants, and the people of Judah did not pay attention to the messages the Lord had given to Jeremiah the prophet.” So many today are still not paying attention, ignoring, not listening to what the Lord is speaking to them through Pastors, Parents or any authority figures that the Lord has placed in their lives.

Isaiah 28:23 AMP “Listen and hear my voice; Listen carefully and hear my words.”

Proverbs 4:20 AMP “My son, pay attention to my words and be willing to learn; Open your ears to my sayings.”

Job 33:31 “Pay attention, Job, listen to me; Keep silent, and I will speak.”

  4. 2 But neither he, nor his servants, nor the people of the land, did hearken unto the words of the Lord, which he spake by the prophet Jeremiah.
3 And Zedekiah the king sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, Pray now unto the Lord our God for us.

You cannot live a sinful life and expect God to be there when trouble comes.

  5. Jeremiah 37:20-21
    20) Therefore hear now, I pray thee, O my lord the king: let my supplication, I pray thee, be accepted before thee; that thou cause me not to return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there.
    21) Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah into the court of the prison, and that they should give him daily a piece of bread out of the bakers’ street, until all the bread in the city were spent. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

Jeremiah made his supplication (request, petition) to King Zedekiah that he be not returned to the house of Jonathan the scribe.
According to King Zedekiah’s word, they commit Jeremiah into the court of the prison where he receives a piece of bread daily.

We too can come before the King of Kings, JESUS, and make our supplication (request, petition) before Him, and He will deliver us according to His Word.
Ps. 119:170 says, “Let my supplication come before thee: deliver me according to thy word.”

  6. Jeremiah 37

17 Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took him out: and the king asked him secretly in his house, and said, Is there any word from the Lord? And Jeremiah said, There is: for, said he, thou shalt be delivered into the hand of the King of Babylon.

Two men one in the Old Testament the other the new ………..Zedikiah the King made a secret inquiry. He asked Jeremiah had he heard from the Lord? The sad part is Zedikiah did not pay attention to what the Lord had to say.
My mind went to Nicodemus who went to Jesus at night also an inquiry this one was about his own salvation .
Two distinct influential people inquiring of a message from the Lord? This world knows when they are in the midst of someone who has a direct line to to God. We are an instrument in the hands of God we must not have any fear to speak what God has said. Jeremiah found favor even in the midst of adversity. Not everyone will accept the message yet we must proclaim it for the Kingdom.

  7. And Zedekiah the king sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, Pray now unto the Lord our God for us…. Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took him out: and the king asked him secretly in his house, and said, Is there any word from the Lord ? And Jeremiah said, There is: for, said he, thou shalt be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.
    Jeremiah 37:3‭, ‬17 KJV

Ever had people refuse to listen when you try to witness but call you frantically to pray for them when things go badly? This is what Zedekiah is doing. He doesn’t want to obey God’s Word, he doesn’t want to submit his kingship to God’s rule, but he expects God’s help to defeat his enemies. Moreover, he thinks if he asks enough times, God’s Word will change..

How easy it is for us to be guilty of having the same unrealistic expectations of God. Some go without prayer, without submitting their day to Him, and then expect Him to protect them from all harm and inconvenience. Some are unfaithful to the house of God, the man of God, and/or the Word of God; yet when they get sick, they come to church and expect healing. Some don’t pay tithe or give much offering but expect financial blessings and “name it and claim it” demands to be met. Sadly, these same people walk away angry and disillusioned from their unmet expectations blaming the church, the preacher, and even God for their “unfair and undeserved” circumstances.

We must become mature enough in our faith to understand that the only way to have peace and blessings is through obedience and submission (not necessarily the same thing). We must accept God’s Word as it is and not as we want it to be. If God says, “You are going into captivity for 70 years so that my glory might be revealed,” we must be mature enough to say, “Yes, Lord, Thy will be done,” without continually going back to Him and expecting Him to change what He has already determined.

  8. 2 But neither he, nor his servants, nor the people of the land, did hearken unto the words of the Lord, which he spake by the prophet Jeremiah.

3 And Zedekiah the king sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, Pray now unto the Lord our God for us.
Sad to know now matter how times the Lord send Jeremiah to warn these people the reject his warn now you see in today chapter that they start to believe that GOD will destory because the are ask him what will happen they get made think he telling lies and then in prison him

    • Jeremiah got in jail because they thought he was talking bad on their City but was only saying what the Lord to him I think the message of these last chapter we read the last pass day is GOD always fulfill his promise and he will always followed through
He always gives us a chance of repentance what great GOD we serve like father he punish us when we do wrong but always gives us a warning for us guide us when we need guides

  9. Preaching the truth comes with a pricetag. Jeremiah was beaten and thrown in prison for it. Jesus said:
Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
    Matthew 5:11‭-‬12 KJV

  10. 1 And king Zedekiah the son of Josiah reigned instead of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim, whom Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah.

2 But neither he, nor his servants, nor the people of the land, did hearken unto the words of the Lord, which he spake by the prophet Jeremiah.

  11. 9″This is what the Lord says: Do not deceive yourselves, thinking, ‘The Babylonians will surely leave us.’ They will not! 10 Even if you were to defeat the entire Babylonian[c] army that is attacking you and only wounded men were left in their tents, they would come out and burn this city down.” Jeremiah 37:9 NLT

Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. 9 Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your family of believers[b] all over the world is going through the same kind of suffering you are. 1 Peter 5:8-9

The devil is constantly fighting your mind, heart, and soul. He never gives up, he’ll send temptions (objects, and people), to make you fall. He never stops, taking you piece by piece, putting fire on fire. But dont stop the good fight, fight back with prayer, praise, prayer, worship, fasting, and reading the Bible. We have the victory.

  12. 2 But neither he, nor his servants, nor the people of the land, did hearken unto the words of the Lord, which he spake by the prophet Jeremiah.

God spake through the prophet over and over again. Time and time again yet the people would not listen. Does that mean that Jeremiah was a false prophet? NO not at all. Did that mean he was not doing the will of God? NO he was in the will of God. It just shows us that people will be people and that as long as we do the will of God and are obedient to Him It doesn’t matter if people accept us or not. We must be obedient to God’s command.

  13. THY KINGDOM COME
    TRUTH

18 Moreover Jeremiah said unto king Zedekiah, What have I offended against thee, or against thy servants, or against this people, that ye have put me in prison?
19 Where are now your prophets which prophesied unto you, saying, The king of Babylon shall not come against you, nor against this land?

It is unfortunate that we can be so stubborn to the warnings of GOD that when judgement comes we want to change the consequences. It is dangerous to blame the messenger when the KING has spoken. True prophets of GOD will only speak when GOD speaks and will be accountable for the WORD from the LORD that they speak.

Jeremiah was in attempt to persuade Zedekiah to reflect on the WORD of the LORD and what was spoken to them, to help his unbelief.

Always speak TRUTH and TRUTH defends itself. We must fall in love with TRUTH. TRUTH makes us FREE. We must also never allow a WORD from GOD to offend us.

Psalm 119:165 Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.

  14. 19 Where are now your prophets which prophesied unto you, saying, The king of Babylon shall not come against you, nor against this land?

Stuberness can get us in to a lot of trouble, sometime we have to learn the hard way. Sometimes we take for granted the word of God, and we have to pay the consequences. I pray that from this day on, the word of God trespasses my heart and be a servant of the truth.

  15. 9 Thus saith the Lord, deceive not your selves, saying, the Chaldeans shall surely depart from us, for they shall not depart.

  16. How do we respond when we are treated ill? We see Jeremiah was improsi Ned because the nes that he brought the people was not what they wanted to hear , so they locked him up and put him in the dungeon. He could have copped an attitude and said I’m never telling them Notes hg ever again, But he didn’t because we see just a few verses later he was asked to give them the words from the Lord. Again he spoke what God had good given him. Although the king didn’t like the prophecy, he treated Jeremiah kinder but keeping hm in the courtyard and seeing that he was fed Bread each day. If Jeremiah would have had a haughty, High minded, attitude I believe he would have been sent back Toy he inner courts of dungeon. Keep a good attitude and let God fight the battl.

  17. I Love To Worship The Lord
    11-15
Some expositors have agreed with Jeremiahs enemies that he has his own prophecies and was about to go over to the enemy. But Jeremiah was committed to stay war his own people as long as there was hope of saving even one, His own explanation makes sense. Jeremiah intended to go to Anathoth which was just three miles from Jerusalem and put his affairs in order before the Babylonians returned.

  18. 17 Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took him out: and the king asked him secretly in his house, and said, Is there any word from the Lord? And Jeremiah said, There is: for, said he, thou shalt be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.

Even in the midst of this trouble being put in prison he still delivered the true message of God. He did not change the message to try and gain favor with man for His trust was fully in the Lord

  19. iLove the Kingdom 👑

10 For though ye had smitten the whole army of the Chaldeans that fight against you, and there remained but wounded men among them, yet should they rise up every man in his tent, and burn this city with fire.

This scripture very clearly reveals to us that the battle is not won by the stong, but by those in whom the Lord chooses. The prophet says you guys aren’t going to win no matter if a bunch of injured folk come against you… you folks are going down.

We must choose to be on the Lords side and He will always give us the victory.

  20. 5 Then Pharaoh’s army was come forth out of Egypt: and when the Chaldeans that besieged Jerusalem heard tidings of them, they departed from Jerusalem.
6 Then came the word of the Lord unto the prophet Jeremiah saying,
7 Thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel; Thus shall ye say to the king of Judah, that sent you unto me to enquire of me; Behold, Pharaoh’s army, which is come forth to help you, shall return to Egypt into their own land.

When Praise gets help from the World.

Egypt is a type of the world, and Judah is Praise. Praise was getting help from the world. But the world would turn their back on praise. This is just another reason why we must be carful to what we are listening too. When the world’s praise sounds better and feels better, be carful. This is a reason why we should not allow our children just listen to whatever they want to. What lyrics meant several years ago, now means something totally different. A different generation, a different music culture, a different culture altogether. Be careful little ears what you hear.

  21. 2 But neither King Zedekiah nor his attendants nor the people who were left in the land listened to what the Lord said through Jeremiah.
3 Nevertheless, King Zedekiah sent Jehucal son of Shelemiah, and Zephaniah the priest, son of Maaseiah, to ask Jeremiah, “Please pray to the Lord our God for us.” (NLT)

No one wanted to listen, despite being told time, after time, after time. All it takes is a diligent, open ear to hear and obey what the Lord speaks.

  22. 10 For though ye had smitten the whole army of the Chaldeans that fight against you, and there remained but wounded men among them, yet should they rise up every man in his tent, and burn this city with fire.

Of God is for you who can be against you?

  23. “Then Jeremiah asked the king, “What crime have I committed? What have I done against you, your attendants, or the people that I should be imprisoned like this? Where are your prophets now who told you the king of Babylon would not attack you or this land?”
    ‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭37:18-19‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Jeremiah didn’t back down even though he was imprisoned for delivering the truth. When you stand on God’s Word it will never let you down. It is a firm foundation you stand on. His Word will not return to Him void.

  24. King Zedekiah is a weakwilled ruler, swayed by the wicked officials who surround him. He is a lot like his brother Jehoiakim in one respect: he refuses to pay “any attention to the words the Lord [has] spoken through Jeremiah the prophet” (Jer 37:2). However, Zedekiah changes his thinking a bit when the heat is on from Babylon. Instead of ignoring God, he asks Jeremiah to pray for him. Many people offer “panic prayers” in times of crisis, and King Zedekiah is no exception. Through Jeremiah’s prayers, Zedekiah and his officials seek God’s blessings but not God himself. Like Judah, these leaders want a superficial religion without personal cost. They want blessings without relationship.

  25. 17 Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took him out: and the king asked him secretly in his house, and said, Is there any word from the Lord? And Jeremiah said, There is: for, said he, thou shalt be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.

In the middle of trials and tribulations no matter what God’s Word is always and will always be the truth!! There comes a point where only and only the truth can save us!!! Jesus help us not be ashamed of the truth but seek you daily and preach the gospel Lord!!

  26. 19 Where are now your prophets which prophesied unto you, saying, The king of Babylon shall not come against you, nor against this land?

20 Therefore hear now, I pray thee, O my lord the king: let my supplication, I pray thee, be accepted before thee; that thou cause me not to return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there.

  27. Jeremiah 37 :2 (English Amp) But neither he nor his servants nor the people of the land listened to and obeyed the words of the Lord which He spoke through the prophet Jeremiah. Jeremiah was thrown in to prison and he still spoke the word of God, and no one listen. Being stubborn and rebellious , And being disobedient will get us in trouble with God. Or living a sinful live.Only God’s truth will set you free.

  28. And it came to pass, that when the army of the Chaldeans was broken up from Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh’s army,

    16 When Jeremiah was entered into the dungeon, and into the cabins, and Jeremiah had remained there many days;

There are times when it is the wisdom of good men to retire, to enter into their chambers, and to shut the doors, Isaiah 26:20. Jeremiah was seized as a deserter, and committed to prison. But it is no new thing for the best friends of the church to be belied, as in the interests of her worst enemies. When thus falsely accused, we may deny the charge, and commit our cause to Him who judges righteously. Jeremiah obtained mercy of the Lord to be faithful, and would not, to obtain mercy of man, be unfaithful to God or to his prince; he tells the king the whole truth. When Jeremiah delivered God’s message, he spake with boldness; but when he made his own request, he spake submissively. A lion in God’s cause must be a lamb in his own. And God gave Jeremiah favour in the eyes of the king. The Lord God can make even the cells of a prison become pastures to his people, and will raise up friends to provide for them, so that in the days of famine they shall be satisfied.

  29. Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah into the court of the prison, and that they should give him daily a piece of bread out of the bakers’ street, until all the bread in the city were spent. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

Even when the world comes against us and the struggles of life beat us down,. God still finds a way to take care of us.
