Jeremiah 38
1 Then Shephatiah the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah the son of Pashur, and Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashur the son of Malchiah, heard the words that Jeremiah had spoken unto all the people, saying,
2 Thus saith the Lord, He that remaineth in this city shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence: but he that goeth forth to the Chaldeans shall live; for he shall have his life for a prey, and shall live.
3 Thus saith the Lord, This city shall surely be given into the hand of the king of Babylon’s army, which shall take it.
4 Therefore the princes said unto the king, We beseech thee, let this man be put to death: for thus he weakeneth the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words unto them: for this man seeketh not the welfare of this people, but the hurt.
5 Then Zedekiah the king said, Behold, he is in your hand: for the king is not he that can do any thing against you.
6 Then took they Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the son of Hammelech, that was in the court of the prison: and they let down Jeremiah with cords. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire: so Jeremiah sunk in the mire.
7 Now when Ebedmelech the Ethiopian, one of the eunuchs which was in the king’s house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon; the king then sitting in the gate of Benjamin;
8 Ebedmelech went forth out of the king’s house, and spake to the king saying,
9 My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the dungeon; and he is like to die for hunger in the place where he is: for there is no more bread in the city.
10 Then the king commanded Ebedmelech the Ethiopian, saying, Take from hence thirty men with thee, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon, before he die.
11 So Ebedmelech took the men with him, and went into the house of the king under the treasury, and took thence old cast clouts and old rotten rags, and let them down by cords into the dungeon to Jeremiah.
12 And Ebedmelech the Ethiopian said unto Jeremiah, Put now these old cast clouts and rotten rags under thine armholes under the cords. And Jeremiah did so.
13 So they drew up Jeremiah with cords, and took him up out of the dungeon: and Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.
14 Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took Jeremiah the prophet unto him into the third entry that is in the house of the Lord: and the king said unto Jeremiah, I will ask thee a thing; hide nothing from me.
15 Then Jeremiah said unto Zedekiah, If I declare it unto thee, wilt thou not surely put me to death? and if I give thee counsel, wilt thou not hearken unto me?
16 So Zedekiah the king sware secretly unto Jeremiah, saying, As the Lord liveth, that made us this soul, I will not put thee to death, neither will I give thee into the hand of these men that seek thy life.
17 Then said Jeremiah unto Zedekiah, Thus saith the Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel; If thou wilt assuredly go forth unto the king of Babylon’s princes, then thy soul shall live, and this city shall not be burned with fire; and thou shalt live, and thine house:
18 But if thou wilt not go forth to the king of Babylon’s princes, then shall this city be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and thou shalt not escape out of their hand.
19 And Zedekiah the king said unto Jeremiah, I am afraid of the Jews that are fallen to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they mock me.
20 But Jeremiah said, They shall not deliver thee. Obey, I beseech thee, the voice of the Lord, which I speak unto thee: so it shall be well unto thee, and thy soul shall live.
21 But if thou refuse to go forth, this is the word that the Lord hath shewed me:
22 And, behold, all the women that are left in the king of Judah’s house shall be brought forth to the king of Babylon’s princes, and those women shall say, Thy friends have set thee on, and have prevailed against thee: thy feet are sunk in the mire, and they are turned away back.
23 So they shall bring out all thy wives and thy children to the Chaldeans: and thou shalt not escape out of their hand, but shalt be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon: and thou shalt cause this city to be burned with fire.
24 Then said Zedekiah unto Jeremiah, Let no man know of these words, and thou shalt not die.
25 But if the princes hear that I have talked with thee, and they come unto thee, and say unto thee, Declare unto us now what thou hast said unto the king, hide it not from us, and we will not put thee to death; also what the king said unto thee:
26 Then thou shalt say unto them, I presented my supplication before the king, that he would not cause me to return to Jonathan’s house, to die there.
27 Then came all the princes unto Jeremiah, and asked him: and he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. So they left off speaking with him; for the matter was not perceived.
28 So Jeremiah abode in the court of the prison until the day that Jerusalem was taken: and he was there when Jerusalem was taken.

15 Then Jeremiah said unto Zedekiah, If I declare it unto thee, wilt thou not surely put me to death? and if I give thee counsel, wilt thou not hearken unto me?
Jerimiah told him if he told him the truth he would could him and if he gave him advice he wouldn’t listen anyone.
That seemed to be pretty popular to happen to the men with the prophetic word or the ones that was delivering and witnessing for Jesus even.
These guys were persecuted for telling the truth. If the chapter don’t tell you how difficult it is for those to receive the truth I don’t know what will. Jerimiah is telling the king that what he was about to tell him isn’t gonna be good in fact it’s gonna upset him. The same thing happens today.
When you’re preaching or spreading the word of God, people tend to get upset when you read straight from scripture what they’re doing is wrong. In fact I find myself like Jerimiah and tell them they’re not gonna like what they hear. Then you try and give counsel and they still don’t listen but that’s okay especially when you’re obeying the voice of the Lord and going forth with seeing that seed.
God is good all the time.

Jeremiah once again finds favor with king. He was apparently apprehensive to give the Word knowing the king would not like what was being said. He gives a glimpse of his frustration by saying if I tell you are you going to listen. Jeremiah had the Word and no matter what the consequence was he delivered it. Yes we may find ourself frustrated from leading and those we are trying to help not heading to instructions yet we must keep in mind it is Gods Word not ours . Keep on working for the Kingdom for it is righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Ghost.

Scripture says in the words of Jesus whoever shall see to save his life shall lose it and whoever shall give up his life for the gospels sake, shall be saved. Our good is not conventional, he doesn’t ask us to think rationally, but to step out of our comfort and do the things that would oppose our comfort. Fear has no place with Godlike faith, when we are willing to go all in with whatever God asks us, we are assured to be placed in God’s hands for safe keeping
I Love To Worship The Lord
(38-4)
We make a mistake when we assume that the priorities of God and country are always the same. The officials who complained that Jeremiah was weakening the peoples morale were undoubtedly correct. But did this make him a traitor? Jeremiah put Gods Word and values first and believed that if his country did the same all would be well. We need to follow Jeremiah example . God must be put first country second and when the two are in conflict we must make Jeremiahs choice and be faithful to God.
19 And Zedekiah the king said unto Jeremiah, I am afraid of the Jews that are fallen to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they mock me.
20 But Jeremiah said, They shall not deliver thee. Obey, I beseech thee, the voice of the Lord, which I speak unto thee: so it shall be well unto thee, and thy soul shall live.
Sometimes obedience Is the only way to survive a situation. If Zedekiah chose not to obey he and his whole family would be destroyed but one act of obedience was also enough to save him and deliver them all from death.

6) Then took they Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon, of Malchiah the son of Hammelech, that was in the court of the prison: and they let down Jeremiah with cords. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire: so Jeremiah sunk in the mire.
13) So they drew up Jeremiah with cords, and took him up out of the dungeon: and Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.
Like Jeremiah, we too were once in a horrible pit and in the mire, but Thank You JESUS you also brought us up out of the miry clay and established our goings. (Psalms 40:2)
20 They will not hand you over, Jeremih reply. Obey the Lord by doing what I tell you. Then it will go well with you, and your life will be spared.
Verses 15-20, Jeremiah questions the kings intentions and the king only makes one promise. He promised not to kill Jeremiah but never regards Jeremiah’s second question about obeying what the Lord speaks until after Jeremiah speaks what the Lord said. After he spoke, the king then responded, “but I am afraid” and in the NLT it says he is afraid to surrender.
I can’t help but think this is how we are sometimes. We pray and seek for the Lord to speak and give us direction but then when He speaks we don’t want to obey because we’re afraid to let Gods will be done. God wouldn’t put us in a bad situation though, even if it seems questionable at first – all we need is faith, trust, and obedience!

20 But Jeremiah said, They shall not deliver thee. Obey, I beseech thee, the voice of the Lord, which I speak unto thee: so it shall be well unto thee, and thy soul shall live.
21 But if thou refuse to go forth, this is the word that the Lord hath shewed me:
We are repeatedly reminded of the consequences and high cost of disobedience. In a rare opportunity for the prophet to speak to the king; he refuses the temptation to “water it down”. Jeremiah is committed to speaking TRUTH and what GOD has said.
We should cherish those opportunities to speak TRUTH and say only what the LORD has said. When we speak TRUTH we are released from the results. We pray for the hearer to obey. But, obedience is in the heart and hands of the hearer.
Lets evaluate our choices as we enter 2018 to ensure that we are fully obedient to the WORD of the LORD for our lives.

Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “This is what the Lord God of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘If you surrender to the Babylonian officers, you and your family will live, and the city will not be burned down. But if you refuse to surrender, you will not escape! This city will be handed over to the Babylonians, and they will burn it to the ground.’” Jeremiah replied, “You won’t be handed over to them if you choose to obey the Lord . Your life will be spared, and all will go well for you. But if you refuse to surrender, this is what the Lord has revealed to me:

Obedience is the best way in some susurrations obey is the greatest way in this chapter the people will live if they. Obey the Lord
But Samuel replied, “What is more pleasing to the Lord : your burnt offerings and sacrifices or your obedience to his voice? Listen! Obedience is better than sacrifice, and submission is better than offering the fat of rams.
1 Samuel 15:22
Sometimes GOD would rather have obedience than anything else
21 But if thou refuse to go forth, this is the word that the Lord hath shewed me:

There is so much to lose by rebelling against the word of the Lord. But in obeying him, at least he preserves life. He may punish us and we may be uncomfortable, but being uncomfortable is so much better than death along with the death of your family. I Sam 15:22 To obey is better than sacrifice, to heed is better than the fat of rams.
Therefore the princes said unto the king,

We beseech thee, let this man be put to death: for thus he weakeneth the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words unto them: for this man seeketh not the welfare of this people, but the hurt.
The man of God spoke the truth but was accused of weakening the hearts of the men of war. He is threatened with death for simply telling the truth. Sometimes folks think the man of God is being negitive but the simple fact is he is being honest. Let’s not kill the messenger, but let’s listen to the voice of the Lord.
Time and time again we see the Lord warning the people of what is to come, and what they need to do. However. the word was not coming in a manner that they wanted. It was coming through the prophet of God and the word was not pleasing to their ears, therefore they didn’t obey.
God’s path is not always the easy path, and His words are not always platable, however the end result is always for our good. Don’t shun the instructions of the Lord just because it didn’t come the way you thought it should., or it’s not like you expected. We have the example of Naaman who had to dip 7 times in the muddy, dirty waters of Jordan. Definitely not the path he expected, but he did receive his miracle by his obedience.

Jeremiah 38:20 (English Amp) But Jeremiah said, They will not deliver you ( to them). Obey, I beg of you, the voice of the Lord, Who speaks to you through me, Then it will be well with you, and you will live. Verse 21 says But if you refuse to go forth and surrender to them, this is the word [ the vision] that the Lord has shown me. In this chapter it saying over and over we must be obedience to God word and live our lives by the his word. God will punish us for being disobedient to him. It’s not going to be a easy road for us. We must listen to God voice. It’s better to be corrected by God.

We cannot hold too tightly to anything in this life. Jeremiah told the people they would live if they walked away from all they had and became captives. However, the people were unwilling to do so. They kept looking for a way to keep it all, and in so doing, they lost even their own lives.
Ebed-Melech, whose name meant “servant of the king,” an Ethiopian eunuch, was the only man in the city bold and brave enough to go before the king to save Jeremiah’s life. Therefore, God gave Jeremiah a word that Ebed-Melech would be protected and not taken captive when the Chaldeans came. God blesses those who look out for, or take care of, His prophets and preachers. It doesn’t matter what your color, nationality, or social status is; if you honor God, and His servants, He will honor you.
Now the word of the Lord came unto Jeremiah, while he was shut up in the court of the prison, saying, Go and speak to Ebed–melech the
Ethiopian, saying, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring my words upon this city for evil, and not for good; and they shall be accomplished in that day before thee. But I will deliver thee in that day, saith the Lord : and thou shalt not be given into the hand of the men of whom thou art afraid. For I will surely deliver thee, and thou shalt not fall by the sword, but thy life shall be for a prey unto thee: because thou hast put thy trust in me, saith the Lord .

Jeremiah went on in his plain preaching. The princes went on in their malice. It is common for wicked people to look upon God’s faithful ministers as enemies, because they show what enemies the wicked are to themselves while impenitent. Jeremiah was put into a dungeon. Many of God’s faithful witnesses have been privately made away in prisons. Ebed-melech was an Ethiopian; yet he spoke to the king faithfully, These men have done ill in all they have done to Jeremiah. See how God can raise up friends for his people in distress. Orders were given for the prophet’s release, and Ebed-melech saw him drawn up. Let this encourage us to appear boldly for God. Special notice is taken of his tenderness for Jeremiah. What do we behold in the different characters then, but the same we behold in the different characters now, that the Lord’s children are conformed to his example, and the children of Satan to their master?

Even in this trouble the Lord had someone working for the man of God’s favor. He will not forsake those that do his will and are doing the work of the Lord. Just like he saved Paul many times he saved those who are his people.
2 Thus saith the Lord, He that remaineth in this city shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence: but he that goeth forth to the Chaldeans shall live; for he shall have his life for a prey, and shall live.
If we listen and obey the voice of God we will live.
Verse 15 MSG “Jeremiah said, “If I told you the whole truth, you’d kill me. And no matter what I said, you wouldn’t pay any attention anyway.” Many say they want the truth; but, are not really ready to hear it. Jeremiah knew it would be difficult; but, he spoke it as the Lord told him to. The Lord will guide you, give you the words to speak and when to speak them, if we are obedient.
Luke 21:15 NIV says “For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.”
Luke 12:12 CEV “At that time the Holy Spirit will tell you what to say.”

“But I am afraid to surrender,” the king said, “for the Babylonians may hand me over to the Judeans who have defected to them. And who knows what they will do to me!”
