I Am the man that hath seen affliction by the rod of his wrath.

He hath led me, and brought me into darkness, but not into light.

Surely against me is he turned; he turneth his hand against me all the day.

My flesh and my skin hath he made old; he hath broken my bones.

He hath builded against me, and compassed me with gall and travail.

He hath set me in dark places, as they that be dead of old.

He hath hedged me about, that I cannot get out: he hath made my chain heavy.

Also when I cry and shout, he shutteth out my prayer.

He hath inclosed my ways with hewn stone, he hath made my paths crooked.

10 He was unto me as a bear lying in wait, and as a lion in secret places.

11 He hath turned aside my ways, and pulled me in pieces: he hath made me desolate.

12 He hath bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow.

13 He hath caused the arrows of his quiver to enter into my reins.

14 I was a derision to all my people; and their song all the day.

15 He hath filled me with bitterness, he hath made me drunken with wormwood.

16 He hath also broken my teeth with gravel stones, he hath covered me with ashes.

17 And thou hast removed my soul far off from peace: I forgat prosperity.

18 And I said, My strength and my hope is perished from the Lord:

19 Remembering mine affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall.

20 My soul hath them still in remembrance, and is humbled in me.

21 This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope.

22 It is of the Lord‘s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.

23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

24 The Lord is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.

25 The Lord is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.

26 It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord.

27 It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth.

28 He sitteth alone and keepeth silence, because he hath borne it upon him.

29 He putteth his mouth in the dust; if so be there may be hope.

30 He giveth his cheek to him that smiteth him: he is filled full with reproach.

31 For the Lord will not cast off for ever:

32 But though he cause grief, yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies.

33 For he doth not afflict willingly nor grieve the children of men.

34 To crush under his feet all the prisoners of the earth.

35 To turn aside the right of a man before the face of the most High,

36 To subvert a man in his cause, the Lord approveth not.

37 Who is he that saith, and it cometh to pass, when the Lord commandeth it not?

38 Out of the mouth of the most High proceedeth not evil and good?

39 Wherefore doth a living man complain, a man for the punishment of his sins?

40 Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the Lord.

41 Let us lift up our heart with our hands unto God in the heavens.

42 We have transgressed and have rebelled: thou hast not pardoned.

43 Thou hast covered with anger, and persecuted us: thou hast slain, thou hast not pitied.

44 Thou hast covered thyself with a cloud, that our prayer should not pass through.

45 Thou hast made us as the offscouring and refuse in the midst of the people.

46 All our enemies have opened their mouths against us.

47 Fear and a snare is come upon us, desolation and destruction.

48 Mine eye runneth down with rivers of water for the destruction of the daughter of my people.

49 Mine eye trickleth down, and ceaseth not, without any intermission.

50 Till the Lord look down, and behold from heaven.

51 Mine eye affecteth mine heart because of all the daughters of my city.

52 Mine enemies chased me sore, like a bird, without cause.

53 They have cut off my life in the dungeon, and cast a stone upon me.

54 Waters flowed over mine head; then I said, I am cut off.

55 I called upon thy name, O Lord, out of the low dungeon.

56 Thou hast heard my voice: hide not thine ear at my breathing, at my cry.

57 Thou drewest near in the day that I called upon thee: thou saidst, Fear not.

58 O Lord, thou hast pleaded the causes of my soul; thou hast redeemed my life.

59 O Lord, thou hast seen my wrong: judge thou my cause.

60 Thou hast seen all their vengeance and all their imaginations against me.

61 Thou hast heard their reproach, O Lord, and all their imaginations against me;

62 The lips of those that rose up against me, and their device against me all the day.

63 Behold their sitting down, and their rising up; I am their musick.

64 Render unto them a recompence, O Lord, according to the work of their hands.

65 Give them sorrow of heart, thy curse unto them.

66 Persecute and destroy them in anger from under the heavens of the Lord.

    Having stated his distress and temptation, the prophet shows how he was raised above it. Bad as things are, it is owing to the mercy of God that they are not worse. We should observe what makes for us, as well as what is against us. God’s compassions fail not; of this we have fresh instances every morning. Portions on earth are perishing things, but God is a portion for ever. It is our duty, and will be our comfort and satisfaction, to hope and quietly to wait for the salvation of the Lord. Afflictions do and will work very much for good: many have found it good to bear this yoke in their youth; it has made many humble and serious, and has weaned them from the world, who otherwise would have been proud and unruly. If tribulation work patience, that patience will work experience, and that experience a hope that makes not ashamed. Due thoughts of the evil of sin, and of our own sinfulness, will convince us that it is of the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed. If we cannot say with unwavering voice, The Lord is my portion; may we not say, I desire to have Him for my portion and salvation, and in his word do I hope? Happy shall we be, if we learn to receive affliction as laid upon us by the hand of God.

  2. Verses 22-27 MSG “God’s loyal love couldn’t have run out, his merciful love couldn’t have dried up. They’re created new every morning. How great your faithfulness! I’m sticking with God (I say it over and over). He’s all I’ve got left. God proves to be good to the man who passionately waits, to the woman who diligently seeks. It’s a good thing to quietly hope, quietly hope for help from God. It’s a good thing when you’re young to stick it out through the hard times.” This reminds me of the song “My Life is In You, Lord”:

    My hope is in You, Lord
    In You, it’s in You

    Verses 37-42 MSG “Who do you think “spoke and it happened”? It’s the Master who gives such orders. Doesn’t the High God speak everything, good things and hard things alike, into being? And why would anyone gifted with life complain when punished for sin? Let’s take a good look at the way we’re living and reorder our lives under God. Let’s lift our hearts and hands at one and the same time, praying to God in heaven: “We’ve been contrary and willful, and you haven’t forgiven.” The Lord cannot bless bad decisions!

  3. 55. But I called on your name, LORD, from deep within the pit.

    56. You heard me when I cried, “Listen to my pleading! Hear my cry for help!”

    57. Yes, you came when I called; you told me, “Do not fear.”

    58. Lord, you have come to my defense; you have redeemed my life. NLT

    Oh, how many times things would have ended badly (or been bad without ending, i.e. my eternity)…but I called on His Name!

    No matter how deep the pit, He hears us and He will come to our defense and redeem us.

  4. 55 I called upon thy name, O Lord, out of the low dungeon.

    You see that he knew who to call upon, he knew who he could trust to pull him out of the lowest of the lowest.

    56 Thou hast heard my voice: hide not thine ear at my breathing, at my cry.

    57 Thou drewest near in the day that I called upon thee: thou saidst, Fear not.

    58 O Lord, thou hast pleaded the causes of my soul; thou hast redeemed my life.

    Look at that! FEAR NOT He said it makes me think of the scripture in psalms that everybody can quote.
    “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.”

    It’s like we often forget that when we’re living for him we should have no fear. In fact I would say the only fear I have is the fear of the Lord because scripture says that’s the beginning of knowledge.
    Brother Caleb Jackson told us that testimony the other night how the man was working and fell all those feet down onto the concrete I cried upon the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and that Gentleman walked out of that place.

    He cried upon His name!
    Are you crying out to the Lord daily?
    Are we seeking his face daily?
    Are we praying your kingdom come your will be done. On earth as it is in Heaven.

    Today I pray “God reveal to me my purpose for today, allow me to minister to those that hunger for you. Allow me to tell this individual or many individuals the Gospel the “Good News” you e done in my life. I pray that whatever you lay on my heart to share your love (whoever it may be) that it touches their. That their Stoney heart is made flesh and the receive the word that you give me. Jesus today I pray for your Kingdom to come in our Jobs, in our Schools, in our Homes, and wherever we may be. I pray that your will be done. I pray thy will be done on eartg as it is in heaven. Jesus I thank you for another opportunity to serve you today in some shape form or manner. All Glory is to you. In Jesus name amen”

    Wow what a powerful chapter even in the mist he still praise GOD he understands that GOD angry is only for a session but his Mercy endure forevermore in the storm you don’t blame GOD but you thank and praise this guy didn’t blame GOD but he praise GOD he called on the the name of JESUS he knows that GOD was punishing him because the sin but he knows that GOD was teaching him he mention in one of these verse instead of turning your back from GOD you turn back to GOD

    Just like a parent that must punish a child, turns back with love, God is merciful and faithful. He knows some of the things we endure may be unpleasant, but He will always remain faithful. Thank You Jesus for Your mercies that have been made new this morning!

    Wait – to act as a server, bringing the individual what they desire….
    How do I “wait” on the Lord. Am I there to just have him meet my needs, or am I there “waiting” on, “serving Him? This verse declares to us that if we will “serve” Him, He will be good to those that take the time to wait on Him.

  13. iLove the Kingdom

    The Prophet is speaking with great faith in this chapter. Each one of us need to take these scriptures to heart and focus on the true meaning behind them. Think about it; the Lord was (at the moment) pouring out great wrath and judgement upon his people. Jerusalem was destroyed, the walls of the city were torn down, the temple of the Lord was in ruins, families were dead, while others were taken into captivity… and here in the middle of the chaos the prophet was declaring the faithfulness of God. That my friend is faith! How many folks have stopped coming to church just because they thought someone mistreated them…How many have stopped coming to church just because they thought their mean ole pastor was being unfair? Come on folks, did you ever think you might be right in the middle of the correction of the Lord? The prophet had to endure the correction of the Lord even though it wasn’t his fault. The body of Christ is connected to many members. We all go through the good and the bad together…even if it’s not our fault in general. Great is His Faithfulness, no matter what comes your way, whether it’s your fault or not, let’s praise his name.

    Though we are in an extremely hard trial and feel God is so far from us, we can be encouraged that he is aware of what we are going through. We must wait upon him and not walk away, knowing he still has mercy for us. Thank you Lord for your mercy & grace.

    Because of Gods grace we are saved. Because he first loved us we love Him. If It had not been for the Lord on our side we would have been consumed and destroyed but because of His help, love and compassion we are delivered and set free. No matter what we do or how we fail Gods mercies are new every morning. God thank you for this promise…

  16. THY KINGDOM COME
    RECALL TO MIND

    Too often life and its challenges cause us to forget that we do not live and belong to the kingdom of this world. We are children of GOD and therefore, children of The KING of Kings. Our GOD reigns above and over all else.

    The compassion and mercies of our LORD JESUS guarantee us an opportunity to win every day. Through daily bible reading and prayer we RECALL TO MIND that we are not of this world, but we are Born Again in to the Kingdom of by the water and the Spirit. Seek ye FIRST the Kingdom of GOD. Everyday.

  19. Waiting on the Lord

    26 It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord.

    We get annoyed with long checkout lines at the store and frustrated by long red lights. It seems though that waiting on God is the hardest. When we are waiting in a line, we may not be happy but we can see the end in sight. When we are waiting on God the end may not be visible. We want these things now. Our needs seem urgent. We want immediate answers. That’s why waiting is so hard.

    The promises of God are clear—if we wait on God, He will renew our strength (Isaiah 40:31). But we are human and we live in a culture that demands everything now or even yesterday. That’s why waiting on God is difficult. Sometimes, the prayers we lift up to the Lord are answered immediately, and that encourages us to further trust with confidence. However, sometimes over a period of time, the Lord tests our faith, and that’s when we can really struggle. That is when things can get hard and that is when we wonder whether the Lord is really listening to our prayer, whether it is for a child to come to back or guidance on the right type of job or even regarding a God-honoring relationship.

    My eyes on Your faithfulness, O God let me not forget to sing in the valley, to look toward Your goodness.
    My heart set on who You are, You’re the light that consumes the dark, the joy and the strength to lift up my hands and sing! – Enter the gates

    Lord it is because You consume the dark around me, it’s because Your mercies are made new, that I am still standing! Your faithfulness calls me to be faithful!

  21. Father God you know me and everything that i have done and yet you show mercy. Father God please continue to shape me into the woman that you see, that have yet to see. Please help me to show your love to all that i come in contact with. Father God thank you for hearing me, filling me and loving me. I am grateful

  22. I Love To Worship The Lord
    (21-23)
    Yet there is one ray of hope His compassion never ends. It is only the Lords mercy that has kept us from complete destruction. Great is His faithfulness his lovekindness begins each day.

  23. 24 The Lord is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.

    25 The Lord is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.

    The Lord’s mercies fail not. They are new every morning but just as he is patient with us to come to repentance we too should learn to wait and seek him. He is so good with us but we think we ought to have everything in an instant, that we ask and he gives. That’s not a relationship but a transaction. Seek him is what he wants from us.

  24. In this chapter, Jeremiah seems like a double-minded man.

    He begins with: God’s hand is against me; He has broken me; He has bound me; He shuts out my prayers!

    Then he moves to: Gods love never ends; His mercies never cease; His faithfulness is great!

    Then Jeremiah goes back to:. God has engulfed us with anger; He has chased us; He has slaughtered us without mercy; our prayers cannot reach Him!

    And finally Jeremiah states:. You heard me when I cried; You came when I called: You are my defense; You have redeemed my life!!

    You can see in this vacillation the great challenge of the prophet to control the thoughts of his mind, to remember the goodness of the Lord in the midst of anguish and pain. Jeremiah is very real here. He slips into depression; kicks himself into redirecting his thoughts; and then gravitates back to the negative before reminding himself once again that God is for him.

    This is a battle we all face when God doesn’t come through when and how we thought He should, when we are terribly hurt by the circumstances of life, or when we are faced with both the goodness AND the severity of God. As such, when God’s actions don’t fit into our neat little box of expectations, it is practically natural to slip into self-pity. Then we pray or read or go to church, and we are reminded of God’s goodness, only to go back to our circumstances and wallow even more in our misery. In the midst of this battle, it’s good to know that God puts real people with similar struggles in His Word to show us that we also can be useful to Him though we are yet imperfect.

    Jeremiah knew the answer to his problem: “Mine eye affecteth mine heart,” (vs 51), but knowing the right answer is much easier than living it. We must constantly remind ourselves to bring every thought captive unto the obedience of Christ, to focus on God’s Kingdom, lest we fall into a perpetual state of negativity, depression, anxiety, or fear. The Bible gives us the path to victory in the battle for the mind:
    *Set your affections on things above (Col. 3:2)
    *In everything give thanks (1 Thess. 5:18)
    *Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things (Philippians 4:8)
    *Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:6-7).

  25. Thank God for His redeeming Power!
    Lamentations 3:55-66
    55. I called upon thy name, O Lord, out of the low dungeon.
    56. Thou hast heard my voice: hide not thine ear at my breathing, at my cry.

    Psalm 3:4 I cried unto the Lord with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill. Selah.

    No matter what dungeon you feel your in, God hears your cry just like Jonah’s cry…..Jonah 2:1,2 Then Jonah prayed unto the Lord his God out of the fish’s belly, 2. And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the Lord, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice.

  27. Lamentations 3:28-30 (MSG)
    When life is heavy and hard to take,
    Go off by yourself. Enter the silence.
    Bow in prayer. Don’t ask questions:
    Wait for hope to appear.
    Don’t run from trouble, Take it full-face.
    The “worst” is never the worst.

    When life gets heavy and hard to take, the best thing we can do is GO PRAY and Wait on the Lord to appear into our situation. He is our HOPE!

  28. When you consider all the powerful nuggets in God’s word, it is almost unbelievable that anyone would choose not to partake of his daily bread. Consider the words spoken here: ‘This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. It is of the Lord‘s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.’ The prophet is reminding us of what we need to do when we begin to feel there is no hope in a situation. Don’t listen to the discouraging words of the enemy, recall to our minds the mercies of God… the many times he’s extended his hand of strength to provide. Without his help, we would truly be consumed, so why allow pride to speak and try to do so alone? When we stumble, when we fail, it’s not time to give up or step out for a while… because ‘It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth.’ Give the best of your life unto him! You can’t earn his mercy, but you can do the part he’s asked us to do in patience. Because ‘It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord.’

  29. 51 Mine eye affecteth mine heart because of all the daughters of my city.

    We cannot live by the “natural” eye, but by the “spiritual” eye. When we get our eyes off of Jesus and begin looking materially, we lose sight of what is important to God. We become world minded instead of Kingdom minded. We must keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, and not be detoured by what we see others have or do. We will stand individually before God and it will not matter what others have said, done or have, it will only matter what we have done for the Lord that will matter on that great day.

  31. Lamentations 3:57 (English Amp) You drew near on the day I called to You; You said; Fear not. James 4:8 (English Amp) Come close to God and He will come close to you.[ Recognize that you are] sinners, get your soiled hands clean; realize that you have been disloyal] wavering individuals wavering individuals with divided interests, and purify your heart’s [ of your spiritual adultery]. There’s know turning back, Lord you have seen my wrongs judge and maintain my cause. You have rescued and redeemed my life! I will wait upon the Lord. Amen and Amen.

  32. A very bad day

    When we sit and focus on what is bad in our lives it just seems to get worse but if we turn it to God and give him glory for the good things it will lift our heads up. There’s nothing in the world that will get you out of the pits like praising God. Like the song says…. praise him just because he is or like Pastor says… if he never does anything else for me, I’m blessed!

    God speaks things into existence. He is mighty and great. Sometimes the things he says are not so great for us, for a season, but He knows much better than us about how things will end. We have an expected end.

  34. 22 It is of the Lord‘s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.
    23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
    24 The Lord is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.
    25 The Lord is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.

    One thing it is easy to take for granted is the sure mercies of God because they are renewed every day. It is something that we must continually be grateful for any knowledge why we are still here and able to continue on.

  35. 32 But though he cause grief, yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies.
    33 For he doth not afflict willingly nor grieve the children of men.
    Here we see the heart of God, his end game is that all might be saved. He may cause grief but mercy and compassion are ready to rescue the soul that God is trying to reach. I heard Bro Jeff Arnold tell how God spoke to him about the Scripture, God is angry at the wicked every day…not because He is mad and wants to send them to hell but He is mad because they do not repent!!!!!

  36. Does not the Most High send both calamity and good? Then why should we, mere humans, complain when we are punished for our sins? Instead, let us test and examine our ways. Let us turn back to the Lord .

    at any time that I feel down all I have to is remember His love and that will lift me up and sustain me.

    It’s a good thing that we turn to God and recognize his righteous goodness in the times when we feel like all hope is lost. Or when we think that we can’t do this or it’s too hard we can always remind ourselves that our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is our inheritance. Our hope is in him. (Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever (1 Peter 1:23 KJV)

  40. This chapter and entire book for that matter gives me the chills. Lamentations by definition, is the passionate expression of grief or sorrow; weeping. When I read this chapter it’s as if the words jump off the page and you can literally feel Jeremiahs sorrow of such great anguish, smell the stench of blood and dust from the debris of the aftermath, hear the cries bitterly wept aloud, and taste the tears he swallows. Such devastation you might imagine may have no words to explain the height nor depth, however this grieved man of God does so excellently by pouring out his heart before the only One who can mend it. I can only imagine how such weight can bend a person. I’ve seen surgeons snap and doctors weep, looked death in the eyes and comforted the families it leaves behind to grieve. This magnitude Jeremiah experiences is so much greater, a whole nation falls in ruin. He could feel like he failed a people, like their blood was on his hands, as a man of God he give account for their souls as our Shepard does for us. He warned them, he pleaded with them to turn from their wickedness. He stayed faithful to God and he was given mercy and grace from the wrath for his faithful obedience and submission. The greatest lesson I see here that Jeremiah expresses is that even though he sees the horror and pain in every place he looks he takes that weight he feels and places it on the Lord the only One strong enough to pick up such a heavy heart. He even encourages himself in the Lord by reminding himself that God is where his mind needs to be focused.

  42. Great is His faithfulness

    23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. 24 The Lord is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.

    When we think about the many times we should have been punished for our sins we can see that God is faithful. In reality I should have been dead a long time ago but He is faithful.

    Even when His is chastening is He is still faithful. His love for us causes Him to do what it takes to bring us to repentance. God is faithful!

  44. 1 I Am the man that hath seen affliction by the rod of his wrath.

    No matter what afflication comes my way I will prevail in victory in Jesus name! My life can be hit with trial after trial and I can fall or I can get up and I will get up!

  45. 22 The faithful love of the LORD never ends! His mercies never cease.

    Verses 1-21 tells how things may go wrong, but his mercy endureth forever. God will not let you suffer forever, in due time, all will be made well. You learn from your tribulations, to make yourself better, and to be more obedient.
