Matthew 18

At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?

And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them,

And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.

But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.

Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!

Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.

And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire.

10 Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.

11 For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost.

12 How think ye? if a man have an hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and goeth into the mountains, and seeketh that which is gone astray?

13 And if so be that he find it, verily I say unto you, he rejoiceth more of that sheep, than of the ninety and nine which went not astray.

14 Even so it is not the will of your Father which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish.

15 Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.

16 But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.

17 And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.

18 Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

19 Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.

20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

21 Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?

22 Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.

23 Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants.

24 And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents.

25 But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made.

26 The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.

27 Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt.

28 But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellowservants, which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest.

29 And his fellowservant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.

30 And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt.

31 So when his fellowservants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done.

32 Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me:

33 Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee?

34 And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him.

35 So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.

  1. But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. 2. At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?

2 And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them,

Christ spoke many words of his sufferings, but only one of his glory; yet the disciples fasten upon that, and overlook the others. Many love to hear and speak of privileges and glory, who are willing to pass by the thoughts of work and trouble. Our Lord set a little child before them, solemnly assuring them, that unless they were converted and made like little children, they could not enter his kingdom. Children, when very young, do not desire authority, do not regard outward distinctions, are free from malice, are teachable, and willingly dependent on their parents. It is true that they soon begin to show other dispositions, and other ideas are taught them at an early age; but these are marks of childhood, and render them proper emblems of the lowly minds of true Christians. Surely we need to be daily renewed in the spirit of our minds, that we may become simple and humble, as little children, and willing to be the least of all. Let us daily study this subject, and examine our own spirits.

  3. Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, THOU HAST GAINED THY BROTHER. But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. Matthew 18:15‭-‬17 KJV

According to these verses, the purpose of confronting someone who has offended you is to win that person back. Jesus always has souls in mind. He wants to see the offending soul reconciled, and here He puts the onus on the offended party to initiate that reconciliation.

God expects us to see past our hurt to the soul condition of the other person. We confront, not in anger, but in love. If this doesn’t work, we enlist the help of others. This doesn’t mean that we gossip and slander the person publicly; it means that we add to the circle of knowledge those who will help us win our brother. We only give up after every avenue of reconciliation has failed.

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.
    Galatians 6:1

  4. This chapter in the MSG is broken into three captions: “Whoever Becomes Simple Again” – verses 2-5 “For an answer Jesus called over a child, whom he stood in the middle of the room, and said, “I’m telling you, once and for all, that unless you return to square one and start over like children, you’re not even going to get a look at the kingdom, let alone get in. Whoever becomes simple and elemental again, like this child, will rank high in God’s kingdom. What’s more, when you receive the childlike on my account, it’s the same as receiving me.” Start over, humble yourself and align yourself with Him.

The second caption says “Work It Out Between You” – verses 12-14 “Look at it this way. If someone has a hundred sheep and one of them wanders off, doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine and go after the one? And if he finds it, doesn’t he make far more over it than over the ninety-nine who stay put? Your Father in heaven feels the same way. He doesn’t want to lose even one of these simple believers.” No not one!

The third says “A Story About Forgiveness” – verses 21-22 “At that point Peter got up the nerve to ask, “Master, how many times do I forgive a brother or sister who hurts me? Seven?” Jesus replied, “Seven! Hardly. Try seventy times seven.” We learned about how important it is for us to follow the example of Jesus’ forgiveness in Sunday School last week. The closer our relationship with Jesus, the closer we are to being like Him. That includes forgiving like Him.

  5. ll that debt, because thou desiredst me:

33 Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee?

34 And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him.

  6. At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?
2 And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them,
3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

there’s so many elements to being childlike that is applicable in this context. While Paul said to put away childish things, he was referring to being immature and not taking care of responsibilities. But Jesus is referring to being childlike in a matter of faith and innocence. Is talking about the Innocence that a child has and faith that they have and their parents and being taken care of. We should have dapped and apply to our lives very aspects of these elements, because that is what being a child of God is all about.

  7. 18 Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

19 Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.

When the world seems to turn upside down, call upon the most powerful name THE NAME OF JESUS!!! For by HIS Holy Ghost we have received POWER to right the wrongs, healed the sick, and moved the mountains!!! THERE IS NO OTHER NAME BY WE ARE SAVED!!!!!

20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

  8. 1. At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?

    2. And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them,

    3. And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

They came to Jesus worried about who was greatest in the Kingdom, but he said hang on, wait just a minute…you’ve got to get IN to the Kingdom before you worry about that.
Once someone becomes Kingdom-minded, who is greater doesn’t matter to them so much anymore.

  9. 19Again I say you that if two of you agree on earth, concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in Heaven, for where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.

  10. THY KINGDOM COME
    FAVOR

1 At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?
2 And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them,
3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

There are several attributes of children that I believe JESUS refers to here. JESUS uses the word “converted” indicating first of all the “New Birth”. Which makes us:

    1. Dependent on parents
    2. Teachable
    3. Excitable
    4. Gracious and Forgiving
    5. Trusting

JESUS states this conversion a command and not a suggestion for The Kingdom of GOD. We must evaluate ourselves to ensure we are converted and serving in the nature of little children.

  11. Matthew 18

5 And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.

6 But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.

7 Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!
In His Kingdom we are His and we must humble ourself as children. Children make up easy it’s sad how we as adults allow little things to cause a division. Sometimes a misunderstood statement or an unintentional action. Oh God help us to love and be like little children quick to ask for forgiveness and quick to forgive.

    Humility taught by David
O LORD, my heart is not lifted up; my eyes are not raised too high; I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me. But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me. O Israel, hope in the LORD from this time forth and forevermore. (Psalm 131:1–3)

  12. St. Matthew 18:1-4 (AMP)
    1) At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?
    2) He called a little child and set him before them,
    3) And said, I assure you and most solemly say to you, unless you repent (that is, change your inner self – your old way of thinking, live changed lives) and become like children (trusting, humble, and forgiving), you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
    4) Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

  13. 35 So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.

He said everyone. Not just some point people. There’s the hard part, but if we ask God can help us and guide us into fully forgiving them.

  14. 35 So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.

Forgiveness is like a gift that keeps on giving. It seems we desire forgiveness from others, but sometimes are challenged to offer forgiveness to others. It is reciprocal, what we give we receive.

A true heart after Jesus should cause us to be quick to forgive, just as we have been forgiven. To whom much is given, much is required can be applied to forgiveness as well as many other areas of our lives. We are all sinners saved by grace. To some raised in the church, we may take forgiveness for granted to some degree, but to the addicted person who is bound by the chains of drugs/alcohol etc, when forgiveness comes to their lives, they are much more appreciative.

I don’t want to be nonchalant about any forgiveness I have ever received regardless of the situation, and want to extend forgiveness quickly when needed.

  15. iLove the Kingdom

Mat 18:6 But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.
    σκανδαλίζω
    skandalizō
    skan-dal-id’-zo
To “scandalize”; from G4625; to entrap, that is, trip up (figuratively stumble [transitively] or entice to sin, apostasy or displeasure): – (make to) offend.

Jesus does not take kindly to folks offending children. This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t correct children, but it means we should not put any obstacle in their paths that would cause them to have doubt in the love and power of Jesus. They are watching us, let us walk worthy of the High Calling of Jesus. Also, please understand just because they are children doesn’t give us the adults the right to be rude and hateful to them. Remember, one day they will be the ones running the country…and the nursing homes as well…they might just remember you…lol

  16. Matthew 18: 19-20 (English Amp) Again I tell you, if two of you on earth agree( harmonize together, make a symphony together) about whatever
[ anything and everything] they may ask, it will come to pass and be done for them by my Father in heaven. [ 20] For wherever two or three are gathered (drawn together as My followers) in ( into)My name, there I Am in the midst of them. And God said to Moses. I am who I am and what I am , and I will be. There is no other name by we are saved by. God is in the midst of us of power of the Holy Ghost. Amem.

  17. Then Peter came to Him and asked, “Lord, how many times will my brother sin against me and I forgive him and let it go? Up to seven times?”
    MATTHEW 18:21 AMP

Forgiveness makes the body of Christ stronger and unified. As much pain it will cause, when forgiveness is given your love for the individual is deeper and stronger. You may not understand it at the time….but GOD has a way of doing things to mold you.
Forgive that you may be forgiven ❤

  18. “But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that ‘by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.’ And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector.”
    ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭18:16-17‬ ‭NKJV‬‬
How many times must we try to help somebody……

  19. 1At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?
2 And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them,
3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
5 And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.

If we would just be humble and accept that we are nothing without God. He is all that we will ever need.

  20. 3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

5 And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.

6 But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.

  21. Humility is an oft overlooked and even undervalued characteristic of a Christian, yet Jesus said that ‘Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.’ Note that humility is appropriate both for little child that endeavors to enter into the kingdom as it is for those who are counted to be greatest in the kingdom.

This is a most difficult concept for the world to understand. It makes sense even to them for the lowly to be humble, but they’re in the habit of worshipping those who have become great among them. We worship none but the Lord! Even the greatest servants among us recognize that he does not share his glory with another. We are only great in whatever he has placed within our trust because his spirit has blessed the very work of our hands! We are humble as a child, we are humble as we grow, and we are humble as we lead, in Jesus name!

  22. 32 Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me:
33 Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee?
34 And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him.
35 So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.

The hardest and yet easiest thing to ever do is to forgive. Nothing on this Earth is worth losing an eternity with Jesus.

  23. The little ones

When we see new believers pray through and get the Holy Ghost for the first time, The have no reservations. They don’t care about what people think or what’s going on around them. They just know that they need the Holy Ghost. It’s just like one of our children, when they are hungry babies don’t care about the world around him. Babies just want to eat. I’ve never seen anyone make fun of a baby who was crying for food. In the same way we can not dispise those new believers who are seeking in their purity. When it comes down to it , we will all have to see how all this will work j t he kingdom of God. When have to remember that God is not looking for lip service. Rather those that seek him inspirit and the truth.

  24. Wow look at this little sheep parable

“How think ye? if a man have an hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and goeth into the mountains, and seeketh that which is gone astray? And if so be that he find it, verily I say unto you, he rejoiceth more of that sheep, than of the ninety and nine which went not astray. Even so it is not the will of your Father which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish.”
    ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭18:12-14‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Brother Tristan did a great illustration just last week with Vbs on this.
Right here I’m reminded a message my uncle mike preached and I can remember him yelling “Jesus gives up on nobody!”
He’s right Jesus never gave up on anybody, He was a humble servant but really He was a long and didn’t have to do any of that. When we’re reaching the Lost, our family, our friends, our spouses, we can never give up on them we have to to faithful in the kingdom and to the seeds we have sown.

Don’t let that fire Go out!

  25. 33 Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee?

Their is this old saying my mom would tell me its “the donkey doesn’t see its tail”. It’s so true how we want to be forgiven and given favor but not see our own wrong. We can’t go to heaven with this donkey mentality. We should have more compassion for others because God saved us and forgave us of our sins, therefore we must show that same compassion to others.

  26. 3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

5 And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.

  27. 3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

The innocence of a child is truly beautiful and so very delicate. The humility and purity may be difficult to maintain in a world like we live in today, but oh how worth it it will be when we get to see Jesus!

  28. 14 Your Father in heaven feels the same way. He doesn’t want to lose even one of these simple believers.
God let my hands be used by you to do your work, let my feet be used to walk a path that you have for me, and let my eyes see your vision. I pray that you will help me daily to not lead astray from your glory and stay focused on you, that we can be a light for you to help lead the lost to You!

  29. 3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

One of the girls in GForce this morning who received the gift of the Holy Ghost did not stop praying just because she spoke in tongues! She told told me she wanted to finish praying and she was unconcerned about anyone else around her- she just kept praying until she was through! Praise God for the hunger and thirst of the children for God to touch their lives. Jesus Recues!

  30. Matthew 18:19 & 20

19 Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.
20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

  31. 34 And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him.

How can you pay want is due, when you are in the hands of the tormentors? You can not work towards paying back the debt. Same will be when judgement comes there will be no way for the people on their own to pay the debt.

  32. 18 Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

  33. Forgiveness

32 Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me: 33 Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee? 34 And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him. 35 So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses

Yet another example in the Bible to instruct us on forgiveness. We should not just seek forgiveness, but we also must give forgiveness to others.

  34. 19 Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.
20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.
The power of agreement- It only takes two or three to bring His presence in a powerful way so what happens when we come together as a church in agreement for God to have His way and sinners to be added to the church such as should be saved?

  35. 1 At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?

2 And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them,

3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

Jesus wants to be around humble hearted people. Those with such hearts freely serve and submit to God. It’s around the humble where God’s plans will be accomplished. They are true servants and give a perfect representation of God’s love.

  36. 4 So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.

You have to be like a child to enter Heaven. Yes little ones make mistakes and sin. The difference it, children don’t fully comprehend right from wrong as an adult does. As an adult, you know better than to commit sin willfully. God accepts children, cause he knows each of us has to grow and mature.

  37. 29 And his fellowservant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.

Forgiveness. I’ve always mediate on this. If we think about it, it does more for us than what we may feel is owed to us. To give for: am offense, a wrong doing, a hurt…. give For, forgive, release, let go. In the end the price is quite small that we may be forgiven of our heavenly father.
