Luke 2

And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed.

(And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)

And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)

To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.

16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.

18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

19 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.

20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

21 And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called Jesus, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

22 And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord;

23 (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)

24 And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.

25 And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.

26 And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.

27 And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,

28 Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said,

29 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:

30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,

31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;

32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

33 And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him.

34 And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against;

35 (Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.

36 And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity;

37 And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.

38 And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.

39 And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth.

40 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.

41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover.

42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.

43 And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.

44 But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day’s journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance.

45 And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him.

46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.

47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.

48 And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.

49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?

50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.

51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.

52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

  1. And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.
    Luke 2:51‭-‬52 KJV

The Creator of all Heaven and Earth was subject unto His creation. How difficult must that have been?! He knew the end from the beginning. He knew their thoughts and weaknesses. He knew the outcome of every decision they would make, yet He humbled Himself and lived obediently because it was right. It was written that children should honor their father and mother, and Jesus always keeps His Word.

It’s always right to do what’s right, no matter how difficult. It’s never right to do what’s wrong, no matter the excuse. Choosing right was Jesus’ lifelong having. He chose submission and obedience to his earthly parents’ will, and this prepared Him to choose obedience to His Heavenly Father’s will.

“Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared; Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;”
    Hebrews 5:7‭-‬9 KJV

He set the example of obedience, so that we could be saved through obeying Him.

  2. And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed.

The fulness of time was now come, when God would send forth his Son, made of a woman, and made under the law. The circumstances of his birth were very mean. Christ was born at an inn; he came into the world to sojourn here for awhile, as at an inn, and to teach us to do likewise. We are become by sin like an outcast infant, helpless and forlorn; and such a one was Christ. He well knew how unwilling we are to be meanly lodged, clothed, or fed; how we desire to have our children decorated and indulged; how apt the poor are to envy the rich, and how prone the rich to disdain the poor. But when we by faith view the Son of God being made man and lying in a manger, our vanity, ambition, and envy are checked. We cannot, with this object rightly before us, seek great things for ourselves or our children.

  3. 17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.

18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

19 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.

Women keep so many things in their hearts. Let it be a joyful moment as His birth, everything that it was revealed about His life, and the knowledge of what is to come. I think that’s what happened when Jesus stayed at the temple after His parents left. Mary was reminded of who He really was. Like that song Mary did you know! She knew! She never forgot about whom Jesus truly was. Emmanuel God with us!!! She kept it deep in her heart waiting for the day of SALVATION!

51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.

  4. 17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.

19 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.

Women keep a lot of things in their hearts. Let it be the moment of birth, what was said about His life, or what He will become. Mary was no different from us. She kept everything that was said deep in her heart. I think that’s why the moment Jesus stayed behind at the temple she was reminded about whom Jesus truly was. Like that song Mary did you know? She knew!!!! That’s why from that moment on she waited for the moment of SALVATION! I just don’t think she realized the price that needed to be paid. A Mother’s Heart is a heavy heart.

  5. Verses 51-52 MSG “So he went back to Nazareth with them, and lived obediently with them. His mother held these things dearly, deep within herself. And Jesus matured, growing up in both body and spirit, blessed by both God and people.” Jesus not only commanded it, he himself was obedient to it and did what was right.

Ephesians 6:1-3 MSG “Children, do what your parents tell you. This is only right. “Honor your father and mother” is the first commandment that has a promise attached to it, namely, “so you will live well and have a long life.”

  6. St. Luke 2:30-32
    30) For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,
    31) Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;
    32) A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

  7. 47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.

51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.
52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

Despite being God in the flesh and already having knowledge and wisdom, Jesus had the humility to be subject to his parents and still increase in understanding. There is such a power in having the ablility to stay humble and continue to learn and be subject to his parents. If our goal is to be like Christ then we should also be likeminded.

  8. 46 Now so it was that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers. So when they saw Him, they were amazed; and His mother said to Him, Son, why have You done this to us? Look, Your father and I have sought You anxiously. And He said to them, Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be as out My Father’s business? But they did not understand the statement which He spoke to them.

  9. 30. For my eyes have seen your salvation,

    31. which you have prepared in the sight of all nations:

    32. a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel.” NIV

Revelation to the Gentiles…Thank You, JESUS!!

  10. Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart.
    Luke 2:51 NIV

As a mother, to know that there is something so special about the child you’ve been given…
Someone once said “if anyone knew Jesus was the Messiah, Mary knew. ” She treasured all these things in her heart and she knew more than anyone else that he was virgin born. And her silence when he hung at the cross confirmed that this miraculous being was everything that had been prophesied. I my child was not everything that they were suppose to be and they we’re about to be crucified I would go irate and crazy and tell everyone they made a mistake and to get my child down. he’s crazy he’s a lunatic don’t hurt him don’t kill him. but that’s not what Mary said Mary stood there and watched in silence as her first born child for sacrifice for the sins of the world. All In silence

  11. Luke 2

    Luke 2
2 And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.

50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto the em.

51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.

From the moment the angel spoke to Mary she has been pondering each moment. . . I’m sure her heart was pounding frantically when she could not locate Jesus. A typical 12 years old should have been playing along the way of the journey. When they found Him I’m sure she had a few words for Hom. Jesus reply was again typical don’t you know mom what I’m doing she still did not or maybe was not ready to accept what her boy was called to do. Jesus sets a beautiful example of obedience . He knew He was God, Mary knew He was God. Flesh and Spirit coming together. A family glad to have found their choice led . Where are we finding our children. Are they living after the things of this world or the things of the spirit. Don’t get bothered Mother’s and dads if your child wants to be involved in everything at church the temple. Don’t keep their schedule so busy with this worlds activities and entertainment that they miss the call of the Father. Yes there is a balance but I would much rather have them at a youth service a prayer meeting an outreach than sitting in front of a tv or a movie or s ballgame with no desire or knowledge what the Kingdom of God is all about. We are to near the coming of Jesus for His church.
What are you saying to your child when you take them every where but you can’t get them to church.
Mary had a days journey we only have a few minutes to drive to the temple? Will our choices set the stage for our 12 year olds ? They are already making drastic decisions at this age we must pray too that their words would be “I must be about the Father’s Business!” Yes and you too will ponder these things in your heart . Kingdom minded rages sacrifice submission and obedience. Will we choose rightly?

  12. 32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.
33 And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him.

    KINGDOM BUSINESS

49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?

JESUS teaches us great lesson here. While others, even family go on about their everyday lives and business, those who are Kingdom Minded will be in the House of GOD.

Others will not understand our commitment, our passion and even the level of wisdom and knowledge that JESUS gives us. But the more time I spend with The KING (JESUS) in The KING’s House (Church) the more I KNOW.

I KNOW more of HIM, more about HIM, and am known by HIM.

Its SUNDAY. Lets GO to The KING’s House and be about KINGDOM BUSINESS.

  14. 2:51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and
    Was subject unto them:
But his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.

Jesus was submitted to his parents, his parents were
    Submitted ton God.
They and the Bible pouts at her… they did not understand
Everything, some things didn’t make sense, but above all, they were obidient, they listen at all times and did what they were told.

    You will understand later.

  15. Luke 2: 10-11 (English Amp) But the angel said to then Do not be afraid ; for behold, I bring you good news of a great not which will come to all the people. [11] For to you is born this day in the town of David a Savior, Who is Christ ( the Messiah) the Lord ! [ Micah 5:2] But you, Bethlehem Ephratah, You are little to be among the clans of Judah; [yet] out of you shall One come forth for Me Who is to be Ruler of Israel, Whose goings forth have been from of old, from ancient days ( eternity) Glory to God in the highest [ heaven].

  16. And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.
    Luke 2:40 KJV

The prayers and desires of a mother for her children❤ i must keep praying!

  17. 51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.

There will be times that we just can’t understand exactly what is happening in certain seasons of our lives. But we must be like Mary, storing them in our heart for when the wisdom comes we can apply it!

John 2:22 “When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.”

The disciples REMEMBERED what He had told them!

  18. And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it. But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day’s journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance.
    Luke 2:43‭-‬44 KJV
We never want to suppose Jesus is close to us. We know He’s in us but we never want to take His Spirit for granted. We don’t want to lose our first love of the Lord. It’s easy to do in the hustle and bustle of even church activities. Joseph and Mary had to begin searching for Jesus and found Him back where they left Him. But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day’s journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance. And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him. And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. Luke 2:44‭-‬46 KJV
We can always find Him in the temple (church) when we search for Him with all of our hearts. If you have left your first love somewhere go back to where you lost it. Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.
    Revelation 2:4‭-‬5 KJV

  19. iLove the Kingdom

We can look at scripture one of two ways here. One way is to say that prophecy comes forth out of the mouth of a prophet (from the throne of God) and then situations are put into place in order to fulfill those prophecies, or you could look at it as God is the author and finisher of our faith and he is looking at the story from the end of the book already knowing the end of the story before it actually happens. Wouldn’t it be funny if we already lived life and are standing before God in judgement right now and some how our lives were written on the VCR tape in heaven and we are simply watching our life from that reel of tape giving account of our deeds… Probably not, however when reading these chapters in the bible and seeing the prophecies fulfilled in perfect detail is amazing. Then jumping to the book of Revelation and reading in great detail the up and coming events knowing all will be fulfilled just as it is written is quite amazing. Regardless of how prophecy is fulfilled, just know for sure that it will be fulfilled.

  20. And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers. And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business? And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them. And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.
    Luke 2:46‭-‬51 KJV
What better place to find someone is in the house of God no place I rather be but here in love

  21. Luke2
51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.
52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

  22. 48 And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.
49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?

    Who’s business are you doing?

His mother said that she and his father were worried, yet Jesus answered and said that He was busy about the Father’s business. We must not get so caught up in our personal business that we neglecte the Father’s business. The Kingdom of God must be established in this day and age. Who will do that work?

  23. 49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?

What do we confess our commitment to? Jesus, even being who He was, HAD to be about His Father’s business. There’s a lot of choices we get to make in a day – but what do we choose to make a priority? Because technically, we are called and bound to make this same commitment and be about our Father’s business, but life tends to get in the way. Stay focused, stay committed, stay about the Father’s business!!

  24. I Love To Worship The Lord
    8-20
    Why Shepherds
Shepherds in the first century were of very low social status. How appropriate to announce the Good news first to ordinary folks rather than the rich and famous./

  25. 37 And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.

Thank You, No matter what the situation is I will praise my way through to victory! When trials come don’t run but seek the lord and his righteousness!

  26. 30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,

The eyes are the gateway to the soul. The mind is the pathway to the heart. The heart can be the most deceptive thing in our whole body. God knows the desires in our heart and it’s our control to let whatever it is we see or hear get to our hearts. This is why it’s important to seek ye first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness. We follow Jesus and seek his face FIRST. If you don’t seek Jesus first each day you might as well given your day to the Devil.
    Seek ye first the Kingdom!

  27. 8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

The message of good tidings was first given to the shepherds… you want a world from the Lord listen to your pastors preachings.

  28. 48 And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.
49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?

I can only imagine how Mary and Joseph felt, to be full of panic after they realized that Jesus was missing. They must have been thinking “We only had one job.” They had many people traveling with them that they may have though he was with a relative or friend. The reaction was natural to freak out. I’m sure they know he is God in flesh and he will be okay.

It’s difficult to think of God as a child mostly because we know how most natural children behave. Jesus is aware of his child like body that needs to grow, however, he also seeks ministry at the temple. Jesus seeks to learn their understanding of the Law. When they found him, Jesus’ response was that he was about His Fathers business. He was twelve years old but God in flesh. I mean how do you discipline God ..uh ..you don’t. I suppose the question Mary asked of why, was the most appropriate. He is the I am, alpha and the omega, the beginning and the end, the Almighty God and Everlasting Father, but chooses to answer to his parents. It takes great humility from Jesus, who literally made them and chose them to be his parents. This is why we should not only obey our own parents, but also seek to serve God for his kingdom come and that his will may be done.

  29. Luke 2:49
And he said unto them, How is it that you sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?

John 9:4,5 I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. as long as I am in the world I am the light of the world

  30. I learned that shepherds were hurding their sheep and angels appeared and the shepherds were scared but the angel said don’t be afraid we come from god follow the star to see the messiah and the angels sang with joy and the sherpards said we must see this messiah

  31. 17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.

18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

19 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.

20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

  32. 51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.

52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

Jesus was obedient to his parents , his mother was proud of him that at his young age he was increasing ly learning and gaining the favor of God.

  33. 49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?

Some would say that his parents lost Jesus here but Jesus wasn’t lost, he was where he was suppose to be, his parents just didn’t know where that was yet but Jesus did. There comes a time when your ministry will pull you away from your family and they won’t understand. They will say that they miss you and you are never with them anymore. The only thing they need to do to be with you again is come to where you are. I like it the way Pastor watts said it today. If you ever lose Jesus, just check his house, you will find him again. The truth is, he never went anywhere, you did. Jesus wasn’t lost, his parents were.

  34. 37 And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day

Her service to God is outstanding. He had no husband but she had plenty of time to devote to God. Her life of prayer and fasting was a service to God. We can all learn from this widow that we can give service to God through prayer and fasting. We can also learn that it is important to stay in the temple.

  35. After seeing him, the shepherds told everyone what had happened and what the angel had said to them about this child.(Luke 2:17 NLT)

What I learned from this verse is that it’s a very good example. What had happened to the shepherds being explained in this verse. We should react on in faith of what the lord sends our way. We should be ready at all times to tell someone what we heard and seen that God has done in our lives. We know that God could open doors in that persons life for us to speak the truth to them.

  36. 47All who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.
