Luke 3

Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene,

Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.

And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;

As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;

And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.

Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

10 And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?

11 He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.

12 Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?

13 And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.

14 And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.

15 And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;

16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:

17 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.

18 And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.

19 But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip’s wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,

20 Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.

21 Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,

22 And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.

23 And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli,

24 Which was the son of Matthat, which was the son of Levi, which was the son of Melchi, which was the son of Janna, which was the son of Joseph,

25 Which was the son of Mattathias, which was the son of Amos, which was the son of Naum, which was the son of Esli, which was the son of Nagge,

26 Which was the son of Maath, which was the son of Mattathias, which was the son of Semei, which was the son of Joseph, which was the son of Juda,

27 Which was the son of Joanna, which was the son of Rhesa, which was the son of Zorobabel, which was the son of Salathiel, which was the son of Neri,

28 Which was the son of Melchi, which was the son of Addi, which was the son of Cosam, which was the son of Elmodam, which was the son of Er,

29 Which was the son of Jose, which was the son of Eliezer, which was the son of Jorim, which was the son of Matthat, which was the son of Levi,

30 Which was the son of Simeon, which was the son of Juda, which was the son of Joseph, which was the son of Jonan, which was the son of Eliakim,

31 Which was the son of Melea, which was the son of Menan, which was the son of Mattatha, which was the son of Nathan, which was the son of David,

32 Which was the son of Jesse, which was the son of Obed, which was the son of Booz, which was the son of Salmon, which was the son of Naasson,

33 Which was the son of Aminadab, which was the son of Aram, which was the son of Esrom, which was the son of Phares, which was the son of Juda,

34 Which was the son of Jacob, which was the son of Isaac, which was the son of Abraham, which was the son of Thara, which was the son of Nachor,

35 Which was the son of Saruch, which was the son of Ragau, which was the son of Phalec, which was the son of Heber, which was the son of Sala,

36 Which was the son of Cainan, which was the son of Arphaxad, which was the son of Sem, which was the son of Noe, which was the son of Lamech,

37 Which was the son of Mathusala, which was the son of Enoch, which was the son of Jared, which was the son of Maleleel, which was the son of Cainan,

38 Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God.

  1. “And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.”
    ‭‭Luke‬ ‭3:9‬ ‭KJV‬‬

    Today I pray that I show forth good fruits. Fruits of joy and meekness, fruits that this world can see and ask me about.
    Why are you so happy?
    Why didn’t you react or retaliate when they said that to you?
    Why are you so friendly?
    I want these questions to come so I can tell them about these fruits. So I can tell them how He changed me, how He saved me, how He picked me up and turned me around.
    Showing these fruits is a window opportunity to share your testimony and change someone’s life forever.
    I pray that whenever I don’t show these fruits I can quickly see it and correct myself.

  2. Verses 16-18 MSG “But John intervened: “I’m baptizing you here in the river. The main character in this drama, to whom I’m a mere stagehand, will ignite the kingdom life, a fire, the Holy Spirit within you, changing you from the inside out. He’s going to clean house—make a clean sweep of your lives. He’ll place everything true in its proper place before God; everything false he’ll put out with the trash to be burned.” There was a lot more of this—words that gave strength to the people, words that put heart in them. The Message!” Be encouraged, strengthened and know who your daddy is. JESUS today YOU will SAVE me.

  3. And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;
    Luke 3:3

    And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?
    Luke 3:10

    It sounds like the book of Acts already thank you Jesus for a good foundation.

  4. 21 When all the people were baptized, it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, You are My beloved Son, in You I am well pleased.

  5. 3:23 And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being( AS WAS SUPPOSED ) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli ……
    ———
    38 which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, whic was the son of Adam, which was the son of God.

    You see? I. The beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
    IT IS WRITTEN!
    the Begining and the end Has been written

    Let us endure believing to the end, knowing that God is the aouthor and finisher of our faith. We are in His will, and our names are on this book.
    Praise God!!!🙌🙌😃🙌
    GOD IS GOOD!!!!.

  6. 9 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
    10 And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?
    11 He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.

    For anyone who thinks that salvation doesn’t involve working or reaching souls. John told the Jews not to have rest in their salvation just because of their blood line, and that stones could be raised out of the same thing. Bearing fruit is the greatest calling and prevlidge to loving for Christ. There should be no greater joy in our heart than when we get that opportunity to minister to someone

  7. Luke 3:6 [English Amp] And all mankind shall see behold and understand and at last acknowledged the salvation of God ( the deliverance by God).
    [Isaiah. 40:3-5) A voice of one who cries; Prepare in the wilderness the way of the Lord [ clear away the obstacles] ; make straight and smooth in the desert a highway for our God ! Every valley shall be lifted and filled up, and every mountain and hill shall be made low; and the crooked and uneven shall be made straight and level, and the rough places a plain. [5] And the glory ( majesty) and splendor) the Lord shall be revealed, And all flesh shall see it together; for the mouth of the Lord has spoken it.

  8. Luke 3 Message
    16-17 But John intervened: “I’m baptizing you here in the river. The main character in this drama, to whom I’m a mere stagehand, will ignite the kingdom life, a fire, the Holy Spirit within you, changing you from the inside out. He’s going to clean house—make a clean sweep of your lives. He’ll place everything true in its proper place before God; everything false he’ll put out with the trash to be burned.”

    A complete turnaround . John preached repentance. I recall as a child people running to the alter crying and asking God to forgive them, Repentance has to have Godly sorrow. Not sorry you got caught but sorrowful that you have went against the word of if God. When you repent of something it is supposed
    to be a comply turn away from it. Not just sorry I did and I can repent again the next time I do it. This is what a John was trying to teach what he was doing by baptizing unto repentance. We have to have sbaptism over our heart, Lord help us to truly live a life of repentance turning away from anything that’s against your Word in Jesus name.

  9. 9Even now the ax of God’s judgment is poised, ready to sever the roots of the trees. Yes, every tree that does not produce good fruit will be chopped down and thrown into the fire.”

    This verse should put fear into anyone who is thinking about leaving or not serving God. Knowing you could be cut off from the Kingdom. Once the roots are cut, it’s takes a long time to grow back and return to their original length. Spiritually it will take someone to start serving God again.

  10. 38 Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God.

    Because of HIS BLOOD, we are sons and daughters of GOD!!! We are privileged to be called sons and daughters of THE MOST HIGH GOD!!! HALELUJAH!!!

  11. 16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:

    17 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.

    Wow! Can you picture it! Here he is John the Baptist, preaching repentance and baptism and his cousin just 6 – 7 months younger than him walks down to get baptized and the Heavens open with the Announcement that He is the Christ, the Salvation that they are all waiting for, but none understood except for John; although even at the end he had to make sure sending his disciples to ask Christ if He was the one or should he wait for another. I think some of the people today ask themselves the same question. They walk with Him, serve Him, but still doubt Is He the One? The answer still remains the same look around you the blind can see, the lame can walk, and the dead rises again!!!! Thank you Jesus for I know You Are the Christ, My Savior, and we have no need for another!!!! You shed ALL YOUR PRECIOUS BLOOD SO I MAY LIVE!!!!

  12. 6 And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.

    16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:

    Thank you Lord for the Salvation you gave ALL OF US
    THANK YOU LORD FOR ALLOWING ME TO WAKE ANOTHER DAY , THANK YOU LORD FOR OPENING MY CHILDRENS EYES AND THEIR HEARTS OF HEART TO COME TO YOU LORD

  13. 9 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
    10 And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?
    11 He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.

  14. THY KINGDOM COME
    KINGDOM THERMOSTAT

    16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:

    JESUS gave birth to HIS church with a FIRE on the Day of Pentecost. When we are filled with the Holy Ghost it is like a FIRE burning in our soul. Birthing PASSION, Burning INPURITIES and Beaming LIGHT.

    The Holy Ghost is the SPIRIT of GOD burning within us.

    Also, notice the attitude of John, when people applauded him. He deferred all praise and attention to JESUS. Here is a lesson in serving in The KINGDOM of GOD. Defer all PRAISE and ATTENTION to JESUS.

    The HOLY GHOST FIRE is the KINGDOM THERMOSTAT. Through our Spirit Praying, Spirit Walking and Spirit Living we control the Holy Ghost Temperature in The KINGDOM of GOD.

    Lets keep the FIRE burning in these last days as The Church quickly approaches the end of this age as we know it. The LORD is gathering HIS harvest and it is TIME for HIS church to KEEP the FIRE Burning.

    Lets GO.

  15. “Isaiah had spoken of John when he said, “He is a voice shouting in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord’s coming! Clear the road for him! The valleys will be filled, and the mountains and hills made level. The curves will be straightened, and the rough places made smooth.”
    ‭‭Luke‬ ‭3:4-5‬ ‭NLT‬‬

    I feel like this week and God has said a couple of men of God to be a John the Baptist to the Pentecostals of Fort Worth. They have prophesied there’s a shifting and turning in the spirit and we must be prepared. We must stir up the gift that is within us And submit ourselves to our pastor in March forward. The Lord is our guide and our light. There’s more territory and evil spirits to drive out. #allforHisKingdom

    WHO ARE YOU CONNECTED TO?

    Are you connected to God? Or does your lineage go straight to the world, my lineage is apart of God and when I ask who are you connected to? I’m asking who, what, and where are your connections. Jesus knew who he was and what his purpose was on earth. I pray God does whatever it takes to save a soul I’m praying for I need my family saved and I need my friends saved!

  17. “When crowds of people came out for baptism because it was the popular thing to do, John exploded: “Brood of snakes! What do you think you’re doing slithering down here to the river? Do you think a little water on your snakeskins is going to deflect God’s judgment? It’s your life that must change, not your skin. And don’t think you can pull rank by claiming Abraham as ‘father.’ Being a child of Abraham is neither here nor there—children of Abraham are a dime a dozen. God can make children from stones if he wants. What counts is your life. Is it green and blossoming? Because if it’s deadwood, it goes on the fire.””
    ‭‭Luke‬ ‭3:7-9‬ ‭MSG‬‬

    Why is it hard for some to understand it is more than just coming to church, being a good person and paying tithes? It requires dedication and relationship to be a changed person. One who chnages their outlook on life and responses to situations when they arise. God help me

  18. iLove the Kingdom
    8 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these “stones” to raise up children unto Abraham.

    There is something about rocks. in this verse, John says that God is able to raise up children from the rocks. I don’t believe he was joking, I want to add the following rock scriptures…
    *Raise up children from rocks-Luke 3:8
    *Rocks would cry out-Luke 19:40
    *Could have turned rocks into bread-Mat.4:3
    *Speak to the rock-Num.20
    *Drink water from the rock-Exodus 17
    *Take down a giant with a rock-1Sam. 17

    These are only a few of the many rock scriptures. It’s too bad that the pagan world stole the name “rock” and turned it into a weapon against the church with their “rock” music. Jesus music is the true rock music.

  19. 9 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

    “Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.”
    ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭7:20‬ ‭KJV‬‬

    We as Christian’s are called to bring forth good fruit, and when it is evident that we are not producing the fruits we should, God will place us in the fire to purify us and burn out everything that is keeping us from doing His Will.
    Allow that fire to continually work in you and burn bright!

    “Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.”
    ‭‭John‬ ‭15:2‬ ‭KJV‬‬

  20. St. Luke 3:6, “And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.”

    2 Cor. 6:2, “… behold, now is the accepted time: behold, now is the day of salvation.”

  21. And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.
    Luke 3:6 KJV

    Jesus’ name means “salvation,” “Yah (God or Yahweh) saves,” or “Yah is or has become salvation.” He was named by God (his father), who through an angel instructed Mary specifically to call Him Jesus. The angels later told the shepherds that this salvation (Savior) had been born and they ran to see Him. Salvation had been given a face that all men could see. Thus, Simeon said at Jesus’ circumcision, “Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: FOR MINE EYES HAVE SEEN THY SALVATION, Which thou hast prepared BEFORE THE FACE OF ALL PEOPLE,” (Luke 2:29‭-‬31 KJV). Now, anyone who wants salvation must find it in Jesus Christ.

    However, seeing salvation wasn’t the same as entering into salvation. Many saw Him, spoke to Him, followed Him, but received Him not. God provided the salvation, but only those who believed and obeyed actually partook of it.

    We must do more than see His Salvation. We must enter into it through baptism in Salvation’s name and have Salvation enter into us through the gift of the Holy Ghost. We must be born again.

  22. The Word tells us we will have what we “Region of Fort Worth and surrounding areas where families from POFW abide – Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth; And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.”

    WHAT A REVIVAL!!

    We must not allow any opportunity that God places in front of us to pass. Be bold, speak His word, speak truth – people are hungry – we have what they need. Let’s feed them!

  23. 9 Even now the axe [of God’s judgment] is swinging toward the root of the trees; so every tree that does not produce good fruit is being cut down and thrown into the fire.” (AMP)

    We must bear and demonstrate the fruit of the Spirit. Even when you aren’t literally leading people, they are still watching for an example. The world is watching to see how we act and why we act the way we do. Too many have the wrong impression from past hurts or wrongful experiences with God or the church; whether personally or just stories they’ve heard. There’s a huge misconception of what Christian’s are supposed to be and do. No wonder some people are so hesitant and standoffish when it comes to church – but we can be that change, that difference, that light to bring truth and hope in Jesus IF we are good examples at all times, even in the times we think no one is watching. Go be Jesus today and bear the fruit of the Spirit! Let them see You in me today God!

  24. Luke 3
    15 And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;
    16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:
    17 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.

  25. And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.
    Luke 3:22 KJV
    The Holy Ghost in a bodily shape LIKE A DOVE was a sign to John the Baptist that Jesus was/is Messiah. One of our theologians said the latter part of the verse could be translated in the Greek to read, you are my beloved Son in whom I am pleased to dwell.

  26. 3 And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;

    4 As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

    5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;

    6 And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.

  27.  21 Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,
    22 And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.

  28. Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
    The people had a mind set that because they were in the family tree of Abraham they were already saved and could not be lost.
    John was saying it does not matter who your daddy is or what family tree you come from but everyone must be baptized. Everyone must work out there own salvation with fear and trembling Philippians 2:12
    We must seek God and ask him to save us and show us what he wants for us. Because what he has for one my not be for me.

  29. Oh Lord, Thank you for receiving me just as I was when I came to you. Thank for washing away every sin when I was buried in water in your name.
    May I never have a day pass that I’m not… “Prove(ing) by the way (I) live that (I) have repented of (my) sins and turned to God…. ” (Luke 3:8 NLT).
    I want to live a life that brings you glory. I want to bear fruit that worthy to serve at your table.

  30. There’s more to this salvation thing…

    8 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

    Salvation is not just about what we received but it is equally about what we can give. If you see a bother in need lend a hand if you see him hungry feed him. If you see him in trouble lead him to Jesus. You see we must do our part. There are somethings that others need and we have the means to supply for them but there are other things that only God can do. Either way we must do our part lead them to Jesus or be Jesus to them.

  31. 21 Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,

    As christians, we are to be “Christ-Like”.
    If Jesus Christ was baptized, than we should be baptized as well!

  32. John replied, “If you have two shirts, give one to the poor. If you have food, share it with those who are hungry.”
    Luke 3:11 NLT

    Everything we receive is not necessarily meant to be held onto. There are people out there that are in greater need than we are. When we’re called to serve the needs of others it’s not limited to praying and spreading the Gospel. People are hurting, hungry, cold, and dying. What can we offer this community?

  33. 8 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

    The Word of God teaches us what we must do to bring forth fruits… summed up we could say its love in action. Love the Lord and love people.

  34. When they heard Jesus was coming they cleaned the village and leveled the hills and cleaned the waters out and watched Jesus get baptized by John the Baptist

    • 5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;
      😂 That’s the literal way of looking at it! Way to go Zaya

  35. 3 And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;

    This is one thing I love about POFW. Baptism and HG is always being preached. At my other churches, never would I hear preachings about baptism or the HG. I believe this is why I was dying spiritually. The normal would be 2 people a year getting baptized and a handful receiving the HG. This is why POFW has changed our lives. The power of the HG is so strong that you literally have to be dead to not feel His Power!!! Chains are broken when we step into His House. Thank you Jesus for sending us to POFW. Forever Grateful!!

  36. Luke 3:16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water but one mightier than I cometh,the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire

    Acts 2:1-4 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and begin to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

    Pray my family soul would catch on fire in Jesus Name! Revival!

  37. In this chapter it’s clear to see that we must walk straighter, and that God keeps an accurate account of our ancestry!

    “Stay connected!”………………

  38. 2 Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.

    It’s not a coincidence that John received the word from God in the wilderness. He was getting prepared to do the work of God.

    The desert is where we can find ourselves. God is looking out for us no matter which Hill and valley we are in. Seek him with all your heart and soul he’s waiting.

    2 Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.

    3 And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;

    4 As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

    5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;

    6 And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.

    7 Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

    8 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

    9 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

    The scope and design of John’s ministry were, to bring the people from their sins, and to their Saviour. He came preaching, not a sect, or party, but a profession; the sign or ceremony was washing with water. By the words here used John preached the necessity of repentance, in order to the remission of sins, and that the baptism of water was an outward sign of that inward cleansing and renewal of heart, which attend, or are the effects of true repentance, as well as a profession of it. Here is the fulfilling of the Scriptures, Isaiah 40:3, in the ministry of John. When way is made for the gospel into the heart, by taking down high thoughts, and bringing them into obedience to Christ, by levelling the soul, and removing all that hinders us in the way of Christ and his grace, then preparation is made to welcome the salvation of God. Here are general warnings and exhortations which John gave. The guilty, corrupted race of mankind is become a generation of vipers; hateful to God, and hating one another. There is no way of fleeing from the wrath to come, but by repentance; and by the change of our way the change of our mind must be shown. If we are not really holy, both in heart and life, our profession of religion and relation to God and his church, will stand us in no stead at all; the sorer will our destruction be, if we do not bring forth fruits meet for repentance. John the Baptist gave instructions to several sorts of persons. Those that profess and promise repentance, must show it by reformation, according to their places and conditions. The gospel requires mercy, not sacrifice; and its design is, to engage us to do all the good we can, and to be just to all men. And the same principle which leads men to forego unjust gain, leads to restore that which is gained by wrong. John tells the soldiers their duty. Men should be cautioned against the temptations of their employments. These answers declared the present duty of the inquirers, and at once formed a test of their sincerity. As none can or will accept Christ’s salvation without true repentance, so the evidence and effects of this repentance are here marked out.

  40. 16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:
    17 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.

  41. 4 As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

    Prophetic words uttered the man of God is coming to pass with the birth of John the Baptist. In that same respect, prophecies are still coming to pass to this day. John was the forerunner and Jesus set our path for salvation, now we choose if we will walk in this revelation.
