Luke 9

Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.

And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.

And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece.

And whatsoever house ye enter into, there abide, and thence depart.

And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them.

And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where.

Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him: and he was perplexed, because that it was said of some, that John was risen from the dead;

And of some, that Elias had appeared; and of others, that one of the old prophets was risen again.

And Herod said, John have I beheaded: but who is this, of whom I hear such things? And he desired to see him.

10 And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all that they had done. And he took them, and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida.

11 And the people, when they knew it, followed him: and he received them, and spake unto them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing.

12 And when the day began to wear away, then came the twelve, and said unto him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns and country round about, and lodge, and get victuals: for we are here in a desert place.

13 But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they said, We have no more but five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy meat for all this people.

14 For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company.

15 And they did so, and made them all sit down.

16 Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and brake, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude.

17 And they did eat, and were all filled: and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them twelve baskets.

18 And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying, Whom say the people that I am?

19 They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again.

20 He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God.

21 And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing;

22 Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.

23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.

25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?

26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father’s, and of the holy angels.

27 But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.

28 And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.

29 And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering.

30 And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias:

31 Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.

32 But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.

33 And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said.

34 While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud.

35 And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.

36 And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.

37 And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the hill, much people met him.

38 And, behold, a man of the company cried out, saying, Master, I beseech thee, look upon my son: for he is mine only child.

39 And, lo, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he foameth again, and bruising him hardly departeth from him.

40 And I besought thy disciples to cast him out; and they could not.

41 And Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither.

42 And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father.

43 And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did, he said unto his disciples,

44 Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.

45 But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying.

46 Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest.

47 And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him,

48 And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.

49 And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us.

50 And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.

51 And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem,

52 And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him.

53 And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.

54 And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?

55 But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.

56 For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.

57 And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.

58 And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.

59 And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.

60 Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.

61 And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.

62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

Christ sent his twelve disciples abroad, who by this time were able to teach others what they had received from the Lord. They must not be anxious to commend themselves to people’s esteem by outward appearance. They must go as they were. The Lord Jesus is the fountain of power and authority, to whom all creatures must, in one way or another, be subject; and if he goes with the word of his ministers in power, to deliver sinners from Satan’s bondage, they may be sure that he will care for their wants. When truth and love thus go together, and yet the message of God is rejected and despised, it leaves men without excuse, and turns to a testimony against them. Herod’s guilty conscience was ready to conclude that John was risen from the dead. He desired to see Jesus; and why did he not go and see him? Probably, because he thought it below him, or because he wished not to have any more reprovers of sin. Delaying it now, his heart was hardened, and when he did see Jesus, he was as much prejudiced against him as others, Luke 23:11.

We cannot allow anything or anyone hinder our walk with God.

    1.
I started one day to follow Jesus, not caring for worldly fame.
And just when it seemed that I could’nt make it, my head hung down in shame.
Though the world all around me was offering it’s glitter, trying, to dim my view.
I started out, and I’m gonna finish this race I have begun.

    Chorus
Though rough the road, so steep the climb, still I’m going right on.
Though the river around me may seem so deep, till it seems all hope is gone.
Though the clouds may hang low and the thunder may roll, still I’m presson right on.
For I started out and I’m gonna finish this race I have begun.

    2.
As it is written, surely I’ll find the strength to carry on.
And just when I need a friend to guide me, I feel His hand holding mine.
No rivers’ too wide, no mountains’ too tall, I can’t overcome.
For I started out, and I’m gonna finish this race I have begun.

    In Jesus name

  3. 18 And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying, Whom say the people that I am?
19 They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again.
20 He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God.

Who is Christ to you? Each of the men that were mentioned here had a different type of ministry but none of them were like that of Christ’s. How we view something determines how we act to it, that’s why no matter what we do for some people they will not receive the gospel, because they have the wrong view of Christ. They dont see his loving nature and his grace for others. Christ was asking his deciples how he is seen by them to test this very thing in them, if they follow the crowd that see Jesus as someone else or if they are about to hear from God and see Him for who he is, the living God incarnate

  4. Verses 23-25 AMP “And He was saying to them all, “If anyone wishes to follow Me [as My disciple], he must deny himself [set aside selfish interests], and take up his cross daily [expressing a willingness to endure whatever may come] and follow Me [believing in Me, conforming to My example in living and, if need be, suffering or perhaps dying because of faith in Me]. For whoever wishes to save his life [in this world] will [eventually] lose it [through death], but whoever loses his life [in this world] for My sake, he is the one who will save it [from the consequences of sin and separation from God]. For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world [wealth, fame, success], and loses or forfeits himself?” God is in the driver’s seat, let him lead you as the MSG version says.

  5. 23 Then He said to them all, if anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up His cross daily, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it

We have been called and sent with Kingdom POWER and AUTHORITY. The Kingdom of GOD is purposed for just that, Power and Authority over all devils and diseases. Why then are so many lives controlled or influenced by devils and diseases?

Everyone needs to preach (proclaim boldly) The Kingdom of GOD. As we preach The Kingdom of GOD, JESUS will demonstrate HIS Power to heal and deliver.

Murmuring, complaining, arguing, are all part of the devils plan to hinder Kingdom Advancement. But we are commissioned to GO Preach The Kingdom of GOD. We will witness deliverance and healing in JESUS name.

They walked with Him for 3 years and still they don’t recognize His purpose. HE IS THE SAVIOR!!!! CHRIST THE LORD!!! Even after Peter told everyone and Jesus told them to keep it to themselves, they still didn’t see it. How long will we walk through this world without knowing that HE IS OUR SAVIOR!!!

That all of our enemies
    Will crumble at our feet

For what’er we bind on earth
    Will be bound in Heaven

And at the name of Jesus
    Satan has to flee.

    We’ve got the power
    In the name of Jesus
    We’ve got the power
In the name of the Lord

    Though Satan rages
    We cannot be defeated

For we’ve got the power
In the name of the Lord.

    For many years now
    Satan’s tried to stop us

    But the church of Jesus
    Is still alive

    Like a mighty army
    We keep marching onward

    Winning every battle

  12. Luke 9-23-24 (English Amp) And he said to all, If any person wills to come after Me, let him deny himself [disown himself, forget, lose sight of himself and his own interests, refuse and take up his cross daily and follow Me, conform wholly to My example in living and, if need be, in dying also]. For whoever would preserve hi life and save it will lose and destory it,But whoever loses his life for My sake, He will preserve of eternal death. Be a disciple and pick up your cross and let Jesus guide you . Everyone needs Jesus, we can’t make it without him. For the Son of Man did not come to destory man or woman lives , But to save them from the penalty of enternal death. Praise God.

  13. 9:11 And the people when they Jones it, followed him:
And he received them, and spake unto them of the Kingdom of GOd
And healed them that had need of healing.
    ———
Jesus is the same yesterday today and forever
He still wants to wants and desires to heal his people
But we Must follow him, listen to him, seek him,
So that we know his Kingdom….let us follo Him With all of our heart, for sure He will receive us!

  14. Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases. And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick. And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where.

And I besought thy disciples to cast him out; and they could not.

Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest. . . for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.

. . . Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did? But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.
    Luke 9:1‭-‬2‭, ‬6‭, ‬40‭-‬40‭, ‬46‭, ‬48‭-‬48‭, ‬54‭-‬55 KJV

The power of God must always be exercised with humility and with love. Jesus lived this, but the disciples were having a hard time grasping the concept.

Jesus anointed them with the power to heal the sick and to cast out devils, and He sent them out to preach the gospel using this power to open doors and minister to the hurting. I imagine when they came back after having experienced such power being displayed through their own words that they were feeling pretty good about themselves. In fact, another Gospel account says they were rejoicing because the Devils were subject unto them. Jesus stopped their boasting and told them to rejoice only in the fact that they were saved. Then He makes them serve the multitudes. In a few verses, they go from devils running at their word to waiting tables in the wilderness even though they were already exhausted. Moreover, the next time they are faced with a devil, they had no power to cast it out.

They had to learn that the power wasn’t in them or about them; the power was in the command Jesus gave to preach the Gospel in His name, and it was always about saving the lost and loving people. Being the slow learners we also are, a few verses later, the disciples are arguing about being the greatest; and a few verses past that, they are asking to use God’s power to destroy rather than to save.

Everyone wants the power; they love the thrill of being used to heal the sick, command the devils, or even raise the dead. Jesus, however, loved the people and used the power to serve and to save.

  15. 26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father’s, and of the holy angels.

““I say to you, whoever declares openly and confesses Me before men [speaking freely of Me as his Lord], the Son of Man also will declare openly and confess him [as one of His own] before the angels of God. But he who denies Me before men will be denied in the presence of the angels of God.”
    ‭‭LUKE‬ ‭12:8-9‬ ‭AMP‬‬

Deny the Lord and He will deny you, confess the Lord and He will call you His own.

I’ve read the end of The Book, we want to be on the side of the Lords, we do not want to be denied by Him.

Why would we be ashamed to declare that we know the King of Kings and that He has saved and blessed us?
Go and confess that He is Lord and tell of all that He has done for you!

  16. St. Luke 9:1-2, 6, & 10-11
    1) THEN he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.
    2) And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.
    6) And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where.

    10) And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all that they had done. And he took them, and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida.
    11) And the people, when they knew it, followed him: and he received them, and spake unto them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing.

Jesus spoke to the people of the kingdom of God and healed the sick.
The disciples preached the kingdom of God and healed the sick.
We too are commanded to “GO” and preach the gospel, and too lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

  17. “Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.”
    ‭‭Luke‬ ‭9:60‬ ‭KJV‬‬

    Go!
    Preach the Kingdom of God.
    Sounds simple doesn’t it.
There’s gonna be a lot that tries to stop you from doing that though. But if we seek ye first the Kingdom and his righteousness God will show the path we need to take each day.

  18. iLove the Kingdom
2 And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.

If it is the will of God for us to preach the Kingdom of God (which it is) then it is the will of God to heal the sick. Verse number 2 says he sent them to preach the Kingdom of God and heal the sick. Notice that Jesus tells his disciples to preach and to heal. Notice who Jesus gave this power to. It’s found in verse 1 “Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.” Jesus gave his 12 disciples the authority to cure diseases. Remember Judas was one of the 12. So, that means we don’t have to be perfect to preach and heal with the gospel. Wow.

  19. 1 Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.
2 And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.

40 And I besought thy disciples to cast him out; and they could not.

They were given powder and authority over all devils yet couldn’t cast one out. Jesus’ response? He says they are faithless. You may have one or the other power/authority and faith, but until you mix the two and get them working together, you won’t get nothin done! Mix your faith with the power and authority God’s given you and start doing the great works God has commanded and sent you to do!

  20. 1 Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.

2 And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.

3 And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece.

4 And whatsoever house ye enter into, there abide, and thence depart.

5 And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them.

6 And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where.

God has given us the “power to be Apostolic – doing the acts that the Apostles did when the Lord commissions them to go into the world and preach the Kingdom. We have the same power – God is no respecter of person. No where do we read where they questioned God, asked “are you sure God”, “maybe we should wait until another time.” No we see where they did what He instructed them and because of that the world was turned upside down in 3 years. Imagine 3 years from now if we did what the Lord told us to do…. REVIVAL – APOSTOLIC REVIVAL!!

  21. 23And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.

  22. 13 But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they said, We have no more but five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy meat for all this people.

Jesus has called us to the Wheat fields to harvest and the ocean to fish for men! In the scripture is the Harvest in hand small at first, but Jesus soon grows it out of no where but Jesus has all power and authority to grow the harvest!

  23. 13 But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat.

  24. 49 And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us.

50 And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.

Nothing else here that we can learn about this one individual casting out devils in Jesus name. But what what stood out is that he was not a disciple, did not follow with them, was not apostolic of we could put it that way… but what he was for sure was someone that heard and believed and had faith of the power in the Name, Jesus. We can see then that all it takes is faith in the name of the Lord that power and authority come from Him. With faith in the name we can do great and mighty things. And whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing ye shall receive.

  25. 62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

Why leave God waiting if he says to do something you do it. It’s a choice to follow God.

  26. “Then he said to the crowd, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me.”(Luke‬ ‭9:23‬ ‭NLT)

What I got from this verse is the Lord instructed the crowd. If you want to be a follower of Christ you must completely be sold out in everything and surrender to his will and take up your cross daily and follow him all the days of your life.

  27. 54 And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?

55 But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.

56 For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.

I’ve heard people blaming God for unfortunate circumstances of life, for unanswered prayers to save a loved one, yet God does not destroy while we yet have breath. Judgement is reserved until the end of time when we stand before his throne. It is hard, but life happens and loved ones do die. God heals and he also allows death to come. We must be like Job and declare that God gives and he takes away and blessed be the name of the Lord.

  28. 21 And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing;
22 Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.

Jesus knows who he is, but wants to see who we say he is. Peter had it right Jesus was in fact God. Jesus revealed that their was more to come in his ministry. The elders would reject him and he would die, then rise on the third day. In the midst of a confused generation we need to be firm on what we believe in and walk in faith. Jesus says for us to take up our cross if we want to walk with him. That means accepting the criticism that comes with it, after all it’s not us that they are rejecting in ministry, it’s the Jesus inside of us.

  29. 7 When Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee,c heard about everything Jesus was doing, he was puzzled. Some were saying that John the Baptist had been raised from the dead.
