Genesis 34

And Dinah the daughter of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.

And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her.

And his soul clave unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and spake kindly unto the damsel.

And Shechem spake unto his father Hamor, saying, Get me this damsel to wife.

And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter: now his sons were with his cattle in the field: and Jacob held his peace until they were come.

And Hamor the father of Shechem went out unto Jacob to commune with him.

And the sons of Jacob came out of the field when they heard it: and the men were grieved, and they were very wroth, because he had wrought folly in Israel in lying with Jacob’s daughter: which thing ought not to be done.

And Hamor communed with them, saying, The soul of my son Shechem longeth for your daughter: I pray you give her him to wife.

And make ye marriages with us, and give your daughters unto us, and take our daughters unto you.

10 And ye shall dwell with us: and the land shall be before you; dwell and trade ye therein, and get you possessions therein.

11 And Shechem said unto her father and unto her brethren, Let me find grace in your eyes, and what ye shall say unto me I will give.

12 Ask me never so much dowry and gift, and I will give according as ye shall say unto me: but give me the damsel to wife.

13 And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and said, because he had defiled Dinah their sister:

14 And they said unto them, We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised; for that were a reproach unto us:

15 But in this will we consent unto you: If ye will be as we be, that every male of you be circumcised;

16 Then will we give our daughters unto you, and we will take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.

17 But if ye will not hearken unto us, to be circumcised; then will we take our daughter, and we will be gone.

18 And their words pleased Hamor, and Shechem Hamor’s son.

19 And the young man deferred not to do the thing, because he had delight in Jacob’s daughter: and he was more honourable than all the house of his father.

20 And Hamor and Shechem his son came unto the gate of their city, and communed with the men of their city, saying,

21 These men are peaceable with us; therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade therein; for the land, behold, it is large enough for them; let us take their daughters to us for wives, and let us give them our daughters.

22 Only herein will the men consent unto us for to dwell with us, to be one people, if every male among us be circumcised, as they are circumcised.

23 Shall not their cattle and their substance and every beast of their’s be our’s? only let us consent unto them, and they will dwell with us.

24 And unto Hamor and unto Shechem his son hearkened all that went out of the gate of his city; and every male was circumcised, all that went out of the gate of his city.

25 And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city boldly, and slew all the males.

26 And they slew Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem’s house, and went out.

27 The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and spoiled the city, because they had defiled their sister.

28 They took their sheep, and their oxen, and their asses, and that which was in the city, and that which was in the field,

29 And all their wealth, and all their little ones, and their wives took they captive, and spoiled even all that was in the house.

30 And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me to make me to stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites: and I being few in number, they shall gather themselves together against me, and slay me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my house.

31 And they said, Should he deal with our sister as with an harlot?

  1. 11 And Shechem said unto her father and unto her brethren, Let me find grace in your eyes, and what ye shall say unto me I will give.

As Christians today we must always strive to find grace in the eyes of the lord and strive to be more like him, meaning we must lay down our carnal self and earthly desires and pick up our cross and follow in the steps of our Heavenly Father…..even when the world tries to lead of astray we must always stay on the path of righteousness.

  2. I’m not gonna lie if that was my sister it would’ve took everything for me not to do the same thing . But i then would of remember vengeance is the Lord’s and he can do anything he wants

  3. 1 And Dinah the daughter of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.

When the Lord ordained the power and authority of the family, there is always a head that has to take responsibility to make the decisions and lead their family accordingly. I find it rather strange that Jacob held his peace because of fear. Here is a man who wrestled with the angel of God and his name was changed because God saw to bless him that instance. He then had boldness to plead his case before God. To simply go from that boldness to cowardly trait if holding his peace for fear of being killed because he was few in number. And this allowed the mind of his daughter to be drawn out by the sights and sounds of the new land. She was defiled and then was bargained after.

The father of the family has a responsibility to lead his family, he is not to be lead by the family. He has to take authority and stand against any vile that comes against his family. As fathers, we have to seek first the kingdom of God in order to have the wisdom and knowledge to lead appropriately. Jacob could have easily rose up and taken those perpetrators out but coward down and remained silent. We have to be bold in this world full of the Holy Ghost and take a stand putting on the whole armor of God.

If God be for you then who can be against you!

    Romans 12:19
Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

But he that did his neighbour wrong thrust him away, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us?

I totally get Dinah’s father and brothers being blinded by anger against Shechem. BUT when Jacob was approached by Shechem’s father, Shechem did what Jacob ask of him; even though he was the only one in his family and the men of the city. Shechem did ask for forgiveness and permission to take Dinah as his wife. No one is perfect and we should not stand in judgement and condemn people when “fall down” and mess up.

    Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous;

I pray the helps to think before I speak and pray for before I act during a situation in my life that has the potential to cause anger and strife. Pastor Watts preached Sunday night “What is coming out of you mouth?” It caused a shift in my spirit to be uplifting and encouraging others who are weary and struggling.

Today I pray that the fire on my altar never burn out AND that I continue DAILY to maintain my altar!

Shechem trying to justify the wrong actions of his son . The sons of Jacob were doing what was honorable back then The whole family will suffer for one person mistakes .

If your enemy truly wants forgiveness the us as Christian’s should forgive them and show them how powerful God is. Help them have a revelation in there life with the word of God.

    • So true . Forgiveness does not mean condoning the actions of someone but the one who performed the actions. It’s truly only through God’s grace and kindness and His love will we reach this hurting world. Wounded hearts need someone to help them to know the Heart Mender . Thank you for your comment.

  7. 4 And Shechem spake unto his father Hamor, saying, Get me this damsel to wife.
5 And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter: now his sons were with his cattle in the field: and Jacob held his peace until they were come.

Throughout our lives there will be many instances in which we will be given news that will severely alter our very existence, something that will shake us from within and we must learn to be careful not to react quickly. When I went through a divorce 5 years ago my pastor and warned me not to make any hasty decisions but you just pray and wait. I knew deep down what I wanted to do but I also knew that his advice what sound. I prayed and waited until I knew for sure that the decision I was going to make was the one that God was allowing me. Society is filled with harsh reactions and unforgiveness and it is a cause for most abominable things. If the church can learn to hold their peace in times of struggles then we will learn to be at peace within and avoid many more problems

  8. “These men are our friends,” they said. “Let’s invite them to live here among us and trade freely. Look, the land is large enough to hold them. We can take their daughters as wives and let them marry ours. But they will consider staying here and becoming one people with us only if all of our men are circumcised, just as they are. But if we do this, all their livestock and possessions will eventually be ours. Come, let’s agree to their terms and let them settle here among us.” So all the men in the town council agreed with Hamor and Shechem, and every male in the town was circumcised.
    Genesis 34:21‭-‬24 NLT
    https://bible.com/bible/116/gen.34.21-24.NLT

Jacob made a covenant with Hamor that if all the men of their city became as Jacob and his people; they will share the land and become as one people. Being circumcised is to become clean in the sight of God. It is to be set apart from the world: stand up and be recognized as God’s children.

But three days later, when their wounds were still sore, two of Jacob’s sons, Simeon and Levi, who were Dinah’s full brothers, took their swords and entered the town without opposition. Then they slaughtered every male there, including Hamor and his son Shechem. They killed them with their swords, then took Dinah from Shechem’s house and returned to their camp.
    Genesis 34:25‭-‬26 NLT
    https://bible.com/bible/116/gen.34.25-26.NLT

But Simeon and Levi were still very angry at what Shechem had done to their sister that they took it out on the whole city. We have to be careful at how we approach a situation; once you make a covenant or agreement. It’s done: there can be no turning from it; unless you suffer the consequences of your actions. Jacob was very displeased with what his sons had done. That can happen with us; we make a covenant or agreement and then turn from it. God can become very wroth with us and decide to teach us a very humiliating, but humbling lesson. Watch what you do in word or deed. Lord help me this day not to break my covenant; thank you Jesus for being my arbitrator.

  9. Now Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out [unescorted] to visit the girls of the land. When Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince (sheik) of the land, saw her, he kidnapped her and lay [intimately] with her by force [humbling and offending her]. But his soul longed for and clung to Dinah daughter of Jacob, and he loved the girl and spoke comfortingly to her young heart’s wishes. So Shechem said to his father Hamor, “Get me this young woman as a wife.” Now Jacob heard that Shechem had defiled (violated) Dinah his daughter; but his sons were in the field with his livestock, so Jacob said nothing until they came in. But Shechem’s father Hamor went to Jacob to talk with him. Now when Jacob’s sons heard of it they came in from the field; they were deeply grieved, and they were very angry, for Shechem had done a disgraceful thing to Israel by lying with Jacob’s daughter, for such a thing is not to be done. But Hamor conferred with them, saying, “The soul of my son Shechem [deeply] longs for your daughter [and sister]. Please give her to him as his wife. They said to them, “We cannot do this thing and give our sister [in marriage] to one who is not circumcised, because that would be a disgrace to us. But only on this condition will the men consent to our request that they live among us and become one people: that every male among us become circumcised just as they are circumcised. Will not their cattle and their possessions and all their animals be ours [if we do this]? Let us consent [to do as they ask], and they will live here with us.”

It wasnt enough that he violated her, they said he defiled her in parenthias it says “Humbled”, so Dinah didnt go down easily. she fought and she probably believed that she sinned against God, so many emotions in a case like that. Her Brothers weren’t happy, and they were ready for blood, Jacob was all about peace, he was probably upset of course, but not as angry as her Brothers, not only did he take her virtue, hes using her father’s riches as a pawn “eventually all their cattle will be ours”. So he not only took something so precious but he was responsible for the lives of everyone that was slain. and Jacob was mad, because he wanted peace. But it was too late, the brothers got their revenge. It’s sad because stuff like that hurts.

    First The Kingdom
When life is sad….God is good

  10. 13 And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and said, because he had defiled Dinah their sister:

    Keyword: “deceitfully”
The decisions you make affect not only you but those that come after you as well. Jacob is known as the deceiver and now his children are following in his footsteps as they deceive this opposing force, Hamor and Shechem. Rather than telling them upfront, no we don’t approve of the behavior and we won’t be befriending you and sharing goods. Instead, they chose to deceive them and then kill them.

30 And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me to make me to stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites: and I being few in number, they shall gather themselves together against me, and slay me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my house.

So then, Jacob is troubled. However, this is what he’s done in his life. He has deceived people. If you don’t want the reputation. . . if you don’t want to be labeled. . . if you don’t want to affect your offspring as well. . . then think before you do and choose a different plan of actions.

  11. “But the men will agree to live with us as one people only on the condition that our males be circumcised, as they themselves are.

All the men who went out of the city gate agreed with Hamor and his son Shechem, and every male in the city was circumcised. Three days later, while all of them were still in pain, two of Jacob’s sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, took their swords and attacked the unsuspecting city, killing every male.”
    ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭34:22, 24-25‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Compromise, there’s no such thing. Compromising will only lead to your fall. When you are willing to compromise your beliefs in order to gain something you are only paving the way for your own destruction because you are slowly letting your guard down. The men of Shechem did not believe in circumcision but agreed to do so in order to intermarry with Jacob’s people. In doing so they left themselves vulnerable, giving the perfect opportunity for Simeon and Levi to bring them all to their death. Don’t be so quick to compromise anything you believe in in order to gain something this world has to offer, the second you do you’ve left yourself vulnerable to more deceit and eventually you won’t even recognize who you are anymore.

  12. Genesis 34:13, “And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father DECEITFULLY, and said, because he had defiled Dinah their sister:”

    “Deceitfully”
How did Jacob’s sons learn to be Deceitful? They learned it from their father who was known as the “Deceiver.” So we could say, “Like father, like son.”

We as parents must be careful how we act and what we say in front of our children for they are watching and listening. They are learning from us. We lead by example – Be a good example!

  13. 2 And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her.

    MHC
As nothing secures us better than true religion, so nothing exposes us more than religion only pretended to. But Simeon and Levi were most unrighteous. Those who act wickedly, under the pretext of religion, are the worst enemies of the truth, and harden the hearts of many to destruction. The crimes of others form no excuse for us. Alas! how one sin leads on to another, and, like flames of fire, spread desolation in every direction! Foolish pleasures lead to seduction; seduction produces wrath; wrath thirsts for revenge; the thirst of revenge has recourse to treachery; treachery issues in murder; and murder is followed by other lawless actions.

Genesis 17:9 And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations.

Genesis 17:10 This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised.

Genesis 17:14 And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant.

  14. 34:31 And they said, should be deal with our sister as with an harlot?
The Lord says: I will avenge…..
Was this right? Was this acceptable?
Will I wait upon the Lord to avenge me from my enemies?
    ……..
Anyways, God is a just God and He is on my side.
Commit your way to the Lord, trust I. Him and He will do.

  15. Genesis 34:30 [Amp] And Jacob said to Someone and Levi, You have ruined me, making me infamous and embroiling me with the inhabitians of the land, the Canaanites and the Perizzites! And we are few in the number , and they will gather together against me and attack me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my household. Don’t be deceive by listening to wrong voice. Pray before you make a desion . Make sure it the voice of God. Or you will be deceive ! When life is bad , God is good.

  16. “But why should we let him treat our sister like a prostitute?” they retorted angrily.
    Genesis 34:31 NLT
    https://bible.com/bible/116/gen.34.31.NLT

They acted in haste and did as much damage as Shechem and more. God fights our battles and calls us to act and be obedient to His call. Would God not have avenged Dinah? But by taking things into their hands now not only was Dinah Dishonored, they had brought dishonor upon Jacob and made enemies with an entire town of people…whoever was left. There are deep hurts that we have suffered, but when we take vengeance into our own hands we only feed the hate and bitterness that writhes with us. God will rises up and take care of us no matter how devastating the situation.

And he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor: therefore his arm brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it sustained him. For he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and an helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the GARMENTS OF VENGANCE FOR CLOTHING, and was clad with zeal as a cloak. According to their deeds, accordingly he will repay, fury to his adversaries, recompence to his enemies; to the islands he will repay recompence. So shall they fear the name of the Lord from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him. And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the Lord .
    Isaiah 59:16‭-‬20 KJV

  17. 4.And Shechem spake unto his father Hamor, saying, Get me this damsel to wife.
5 And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter: now his sons were with his cattle in the field: and Jacob held his peace until they were come.

Shechem asked his father for help to get him married to Dinah, after doing wrong and his father was willing.

I pray God give me the wisdome to be the parent that is aligned with God and biblical standards.

    How persuasive.
We to need to be persuasive with the people of this city. The ultimate exchange is you surrendering and God filling you with a Holy Ghost no one can take that away. You’re forever never alone and that’s what we need to get across to these guys.

  19. 13 And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and said, because he had defiled Dinah their sister:

This whole chapter is full of deceit. In case no one has noticed through the examples we’ve seen so far, that deceit only works in the exact moment it’s sown, after that, rest assured, destruction will come and the sin will be revealed. Point: be honest, be humble, be obedient.

  20. Genesis 34
34 Now fDinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to see the women of the land. 2 And when Shechem the son of gHamor the Hivite, the prince of the land, saw her, he seized her and lay with her and humiliated her. 3 And his soul was drawn to Dinah the daughter of Jacob. He loved the young woman and spoke tenderly to her

Anyone who has been a victor rape or has had someone close to them raped can know the pain and and vengeance that rape causes.

Dinah was the only girl in the family. Why she left the safety of her home we are not told. This world wants to seize anything that appeases them. Dinah may have been curious about the ways of the other women maybe she was lonely for friendship yet it cost her a lot of traumatic situations in her life. Then one thing led to another . Rage spreads quickly and an entire group of people now not only have felt pain of their daughter / sister being abused allow their anger to turn to murder.
No matter the painful situation that life brings through innocence or the intrusion of another individual can profoundly bring extreme deep wounds. Each of us will read this story and probably experience some type of emotional effect . The only peace that can be found is laying traumatizing
events at the feet of Jesus. No court system no revenge can bring the peace that will be needed . No counseling session accept from THE COUNSELOR can heal wounded people. Whether you’ve been the victim or the victimizers only God knows the depth of causes and effects .
This world is full of hurting people who have experienced murder rapes vengeance shame ridicule all because of ? ?????????

Who’s the blame ? Well that’s the long time question. We the church must stay close to the THE COUNSELOR we cannot allow vengeance fall into our hands as some would have it. The pain of life situations leaves scars oh but I know a Savior who has gentle hands and He’s there even in the midst of a messed up world that has made horrible choices . His Grace can mend His care Heal!
There is peace in His presence.

Isaiah 26:3 (TMB) Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee, because he trusteth in Thee.

    Isaiah 9:6
    International Version
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

  21. 11 And Shechem said unto her father and unto her brethren, Let me find grace in your eyes, and what ye shall say unto me I will give.

In verse 11 we see Shechem has a strong relationship with her father. This was very mannerly and like a leader to be saying this. Remember all the time that we are leaders to the people around us. If we do something wrong they might think it’s ok, but it is not! If we go up to the alter and praise God with all of our hearts, that might encourage them more!! BE THE LEADERS THAT GOD WANTS YOU TO BE POFW!!!😁😁😁😁😁

    • 13 And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and said, because he had defiled Dinah their sister:

Like father, like sons! Jacob’s Son has watched him be deceitful and trick people, they also watch Labán do the same by changing wages for his convenience several times although God always worked things out for the good of those who loved Him. Here the boys deceive them about their intentions and they act out of anger. They spoke true for God did not approve of marrying out of their religion. Because God didn’t want them to be unequally yoked. But their intentions were others. Vengeance. Forgiveness is better than vengeance. Forgiveness liberates, while vengeance slaves you to whom offended you. It is better to forgive and put everything in God’s hands. Letting God take care of all your worries and concerns gives you peace no matter what’s the situation. Romans 12:17 Repay no one evil for evil. Have[a] regard for good things in the sight of all men. 18 If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. 19 Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord

  22. Thank you Jesus for today , let us humble ourselfs. Let your Will be done in our hearts and minds Lord please . He is our strength and confidence

3 And his soul clave unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and spake kindly unto the damsel.

This is what people don’t understand when they have relations before marriage. There is a linkage of souls. An attachment of sort in the spirit. They keep giving part of themselves and when the ONE that God has bestowed for them finally arrives in their lives there is nothing left to give!!! On the other hand Dinah in this case is raped. Who wants to marry their rapist. I mean I see the point in their Times was probably better to marry than to live in disgraced. In my culture they act the same way, if something like this happens they try to cover the shame by marrying the girl to whomever dishonor her. But I probably would of reacted like Simeón and Levi. It is not good to act in anger. For the Bible says in Ephesians 4:26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:

  24. 25 And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city boldly, and slew all the males.

So if the woman that was caught in the act of aduktery was to be stoned then why wouldn’t the son of hamor be stoned? Back in that time the woman weren’t held at such a position that they are today. I guess their value has increased according to what i have read….. well i THANK GOD I AM A BLOOD BOUGHT CHILD OF GOD!!! HALELUJAH!!! THANK YOU DADDY!!!

  25. iLove the Kingdom
1 And Dinah the daughter of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.

    Faceplant…
This is a sad story. I wish Dinah coulda stayed home and chilled with the daughters of her people instead of visiting the daughters of the pagans! Maw and Paw, be careful of letting your daughters spend the night at the homes of their pagan friends. Ask the pagan girls to come over instead and have Bible Study. I believe this all coulda been avoided had Dinah stayed home. Of course not making excuses for everyone else’s behavior, but think about it…why add to the drama that never shoulda been in the first place. We as parents must prevent the things we have power over.

  26. 30 And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me to make me to stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites: and I being few in number, they shall gather themselves together against me, and slay me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my house.

Revenge is very hurtful, but not to just the one that the revenge is upon but also to the one who is giving it. We must walk in peace and allow God to fight for us. Too often we want to take our passion and show others what we can do. However, what can the God Almight do greater. Let Him be the judge and forgive. Seek after His Kingdom and He will protect you.

  27. 1 And Dinah the daughter of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.

2 And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her.

Teaching our children the “whys” of why we choose to life an Apostolic Life is so important. Here we see Dinah going out to “see” the daughters of the land. Her curiosity of how the rest of the “world” lived got the best of her. Obviously she was in a place that she shouldn’t be that she would be wooed by Shechem and placed in the compromising position to be taken advantage, rather by choice or by force, she was still in a place that she should not have ventured to.

If as parents we can teach by example relationship with Jesus Christ as the most important thing in our lives and the lives of our children, the Spirit of God will lead and guide them. Too many times we talk about religion and the rules that come with religion, and do not teach them the importance of the relationship, which will bring about a different lifestyle because they will reverence HIS presence in their lives, and not want to do anything to offend, which includes going places and doing things of this world. It will also teach them to crucify the desires of the flesh and seek the Kingdom FIRST.

It’s all about relationship not religion and rules!

  28. 13But since Shechem had defiled their sister, Dinah, Jacob’s sons responded deceitfully to Shechem and his father, Hamor. 14They said to them, “We couldn’t possibly allow this, because you’re not circumcised. It would be a disgrace for our sister to marry a man like you!

The sons had it in their minds, they were going to wrong Hamor and their town. Like Pastor preached, they “guild” or deceived, fraud, tricked Hamor. For they knew the men would be weak, and easily conquered. Be careful of situations which appear to good to be true, there’s normally a hidden agenda behind it.

  29. FIRST THE KINGDOM
    DEALS GONE BAD

There are many occasions that people act on their own will and follow their own desires; regardless of the pain it may cause others. Making Deals or Agreements with deceivers and or the son of a deceiver is dangerous.

The pain of circumcision was much greater than they anticipated and this mismanagement of resources has several devastating facts that led to their spoil.

    1. The circumcision decision was initiated through lust. One mans desire for a forbidden woman, endangered an entire nation.

    2. To circumcise all men on the same day reveals the flesh driven decision. The entire nation of men wringing in pain leaves them defenseless.

    3. There should be a knowledge and awareness of who it is that we are making deals with. Are they trustworthy? Do they have a good record? What is their family like? There was no BBB or Angies List or Google Search.

The KEY to victory when we are wronged is to allow GOD room for vengeance. We are foolish to take matters into our own hands. Begin with PRAYER not Plans and Plots to get even.

  30. 1 And Dinah the daughter of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.
2 And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her.

Dinah being curious about they way ‘others’ lived turned out to be a terrible experience and she found out those living in Canaan did not have the same values as she grew up with. We can’t let our children find out the hard way that their best friend at school doesn’t have the same Christian values we have by exposing them to who knows what in their homes! I like the comment before where we invite those friends into our homes and teach them God’s ways.

  31. “One day Dinah, the daughter of Jacob and Leah, went to visit some of the young women who lived in the area. But when the local prince, Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, saw Dinah, he seized her and raped her. But then he fell in love with her, and he tried to win her affection with tender words. He said to his father, Hamor, “Get me this young girl. I want to marry her.””
    ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭34:1-4‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Dinah’s desire to do this was understandable but unwise. Jacob did not make sure she was properly supervised. To allow unsupervised socialization in a pagan town was a failure of responsibility on the part of Jacob and Leah.
Parents it’s our place to teach and watch our children at all times. When you let your children play with worldly things nothing good will come out of it..

  32. 3 And his soul clave unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and spake kindly unto the damsel.

It is truly crucial to guard your ears. Another translation reads: “But then he fell in love with her, and he tried to win her affection with tender words.”

Sunday Pastor asked “What Are You Saying?”, he continued to share that we are accountable to the words we are speaking. We need to guard our ears, and check ourselves to only speak what is good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

  33. 1. And Dinah the daughter of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.

    To the fathers:
Do everything you can to protect your family. Set rules and explain why they are there, and enforce them. We are here to be their parents, not their friends.

    To the daughters (and sons):
Understand that rules and guidelines are there for a reason…your protection and well-being, not out of spite. Yes, we want you to miss out on things – the heartache and pain this world leaves behind when it is through with you.

  34. 13 And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and said, because he had defiled Dinah their sister:
14 And they said unto them, We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised; for that were a reproach unto us:
    15 But in this will we consent unto you: If ye will be as we be, that every male of you be circumcised;
When you make a covenant with God’s people make sure you keep it.And do not

  35. And the sons of Jacob came out of the field when they heard it: and the men were grieved, and they were very wroth, because he had wrought folly in Israel in lying with Jacob’s daughter: which thing ought not to be done.

8 And Hamor communed with them, saying, The soul of my son Shechem longeth for your daughter: I pray you give her him to wife.

  36. Jesus will always forgive us for all the bad things we do as long as we repent.
    7. Jacob came on to the field where the men were very wroth, and when Folley was in Israel she wrought in lying to Jacobs Daughter which not to be done.
8.Hamor said my sons soul longeth to my daughter I pray for her and the wife

  37. Genesis 34:5 And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter: now his sons were with his cattle in the field: and Jacob held his peace until they were come.

Its funny how no one has to teach us to get angry. It just comes naturally. Tell a baby no for the 1st time–rage. Take a toddlers toy—rage. Tell a teenager they cant do something–double rage. You walk out to see a dent in your car that you didn’t put there–RAGE!
Jacob just found out his only daughter was raped. Who could blame him if he wanted to start and all out war. But he didn’t. Scripture says he “held his peace”. Learning to hold your peace is hard, but also show your level of maturity.

Proverbs 29:11 Fools give full vent to their rage, but the wise bring calm in the end.

Deuteronomy 32:35 (NKJV)-Vengeance is Mine, and recompense;Their foot shall slip in due time; For the day of their calamity is at hand, And the things to come hasten upon them.’

  38. 2 And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her.

3 And his soul clave unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and spake kindly unto the damsel.

4 And Shechem spake unto his father Hamor, saying, Get me this damsel to wife.

5 And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter: now his sons were with his cattle in the field: and Jacob held his peace until they were come.

There is always a way and an order to do things. When you step out of the proper way one cannot expect for things to come all perfect and be blessed.

  39. Genesis 34:
There are two issues in the book of Genesis that God dealt with in a special way.

#1-The first had to do with inheritance. The inheritance promised to Abraham, then to Isaac and now to Jacob.
God wanted to protect the transmission of this inheritance and he did not like at all that mixed marriages were performed between women of God’s people and men belonging to the pagan peoples who lived around him, and vice versa.
#2- The second important issue was the environment of the individual, which had relevance especially in the life of Jacob, who had a large family, because in addition to his twelve sons he had daughters. This story focuses solely on her daughter Dina, because she was involved in the tragic incidents we have cited.

There is yet another factor that we must consider for a proper understanding of the book of Genesis; It’s about family problems. There were conflicts and problems in Abraham’s family, as well as in Isaac’s family. Esau was Isaac and Jacob’s favorite son, Rebekah’s, which had given rise to very problematic situations in Jacob’s family.

And that was how stopping on his trip staying in Shechem for a while was going to cause Jacob and his family very serious problems and a great tragedy. This is really a sad chapter.

  40. 12 Ask me never so much dowry and gift, and I will give according as ye shall say unto me: but give me the damsel to wife.

Money can’t buy love!!! We sometimes forget that we could do nothing to repay JESUS for the unconditional love HE HAS FREELY GIVEN US!!!

  41. And Shechem spake unto his father Hamor, saying, Get me this damsel to wife.

5 And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter: now his sons were with his cattle in the field: and Jacob held his peace until they were come.

  42. 5 And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter: now his sons were with his cattle in the field: and Jacob held his peace until they were come.

Many times I have wished that I had held my peace, even to the point that I allowed Jesus to fight my fight for me.
Many times throughout the scriptures, we see where the men of God waited and allowed Jesus to do the fighting.

  43. This chapter is full of deceit on both sides. When something is approached in this fashion, nothing good comes out of it. Psalm 119:29 CEV “Keep me from being deceitful, and be kind enough to teach me your Law.” 1 Peter 2:1 AMP “So put aside every trace of malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander and hateful speech;”.

  44. When you try to get away with sin, it will eventually catch up with you. You can’t run or hide from God. The enemy would love for you to believe that you can get away with doing things that is contrary to God’s word. That is not so. God can see all and you will have to answer for your sins.

  45. 25 And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city boldly, and slew all the males.

26 And they slew Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem’s house, and went out.

What I find crazy about this whole thing is that they killed all the males, so one man’s sin every male paid for and it immediately took me to how one man died for all our sins on a cross and never had to but wanted to that we might be free by his blood. Thank you Jesus.

  46. 27 The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and spoiled the city, because they had defiled their sister.

Taking matters into our own hands only gets messy when it comes to revenge. Jacobs sons had beguiled Shechem and his family to become circumcised as a scheme for vengeance. Dinah was defiled and they were not going to let their sister marry a non-Jew. If they had left matters in God’s hands it would have been for His glory and now what they’ve done will mark them as a target. Jacob corrects them for their behavior because vengeance is the Lords.

  47. 5 And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter: now his sons were with his cattle in the field: and Jacob held his peace until they were come.

It would have been so easy for Jacob to get angry react but he waited. I’m not sure if that would have been my reaction. Yet it’s powerful to say the least. Let us all learn to wait. Vengeance ma feel good in the moment but you may end up paying a lifetime or eternity for your reaction. Instead of fueling fires we must learn to extinguish them and allow God to work out the rest.

  48. The right time to strike

5 And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter: now his sons were with his cattle in the field: and Jacob held his peace until they were come.

To win a battle you have to know the right time to strike. You can’t just go out guns blazing at the first sight of trouble. Jacob knew that if he jumped too soon it could cost him dearly. Knowing when to fight and when to keep your mouth shut is probably one of the biggest lessons we could learn in this life.

  49. And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter: now his sons were with his cattle in the field: and Jacob held his peace until they were come. And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me to make me to stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites: and I being few in number, they shall gather themselves together against me, and slay me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my house.
    Genesis 34:5‭, ‬30 KJV

A very difficult circumstance to respond to, Jacob was able to hold his peace. But his sons … not so much. When we react while angry, nothing good will ever come out of it. Words will be said that we can’t take back and our actions will always leave scars. While life is never as black and white as we believe it to be, think before you act out of anger … or you may end up slaughtering all the men of a village (figuritively … but just in case literally as well).

  50. Taking matters into your own hands will always make things worse than what it already is!! God knows how to handle a situation like this. You must trust Him when He says …Vengeance is mine, I will repay saith The LORD.’

  51. 1 And Dinah the daughter of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.

2 And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her.

This chapter describes how getting too close to the world can cause many problems not just you but for others as well.

  52. 2 And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her.

3 And his soul clave unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and spake kindly unto the damsel.

4 And Shechem spake unto his father Hamor, saying, Get me this damsel to wife.

I have to wonder what would have happened if the “humbling” never happened, what if he never defiled her, would the king even coincided the request, it seems like this prince always had to have everything he wanted even if it meant by force or humiliation. But God.. Shecem messed with Gods chosen, of course he fell in love, because that’s how God designed the act of intimacy, he wanted women to be one with men. Dinah was the daughter of the most high God, so she had something that they didnt have! The God of Isreal.

    First the Kingdom

When life is unfair…God is Good

  53. 14 And they said unto them, We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised; for that were a reproach unto us:

  54. “Shechem wasted no time in acting on this request, for he wanted Jacob’s daughter desperately. Shechem was a highly respected member of his family, and he went with his father, Hamor, to present this proposal to the leaders at the town gate. “These men are our friends,” they said. “Let’s invite them to live here among us and trade freely. Look, the land is large enough to hold them. We can take their daughters as wives and let them marry ours.”
    ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭34:19-21‬ ‭NLT‬‬

As a leader we must be full of prayer and led by God is every decision we make. Our decisions affect those that follow us. And what ever the result of our decision, rather it be good or bad is it affects everyone.
