Judges 1

Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the Lord, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?

And the Lord said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.

And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.

And Judah went up; and the Lord delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they slew of them in Bezek ten thousand men.

And they found Adonibezek in Bezek: and they fought against him, and they slew the Canaanites and the Perizzites.

But Adonibezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.

And Adonibezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.

Now the children of Judah had fought against Jerusalem, and had taken it, and smitten it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.

And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites, that dwelt in the mountain, and in the south, and in the valley.

10 And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron: (now the name of Hebron before was Kirjatharba:) and they slew Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.

11 And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before was Kirjathsepher:

12 And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjathsepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.

13 And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.

14 And it came to pass, when she came to him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted from off her ass; and Caleb said unto her, What wilt thou?

15 And she said unto him, Give me a blessing: for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the nether springs.

16 And the children of the Kenite, Moses’ father in law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which lieth in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people.

17 And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they slew the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.

18 Also Judah took Gaza with the coast thereof, and Askelon with the coast thereof, and Ekron with the coast thereof.

19 And the Lord was with Judah; and he drave out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.

20 And they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses said: and he expelled thence the three sons of Anak.

21 And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.

22 And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Bethel: and the Lord was with them.

23 And the house of Joseph sent to descry Bethel. (Now the name of the city before was Luz.)

24 And the spies saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Shew us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will shew thee mercy.

25 And when he shewed them the entrance into the city, they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family.

26 And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz: which is the name thereof unto this day.

27 Neither did Manasseh drive out the inhabitants of Bethshean and her towns, nor Taanach and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns: but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.

28 And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out.

29 Neither did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.

30 Neither did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became tributaries.

31 Neither did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Accho, nor the inhabitants of Zidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob:

32 But the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: for they did not drive them out.

33 Neither did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Bethshemesh, nor the inhabitants of Bethanath; but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Bethshemesh and of Bethanath became tributaries unto them.

34 And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the mountain: for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley:

35 But the Amorites would dwell in mount Heres in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became tributaries.

36 And the coast of the Amorites was from the going up to Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.

  1. A time came after the death of Joshua when the People of Israel asked God , “Who will take the lead in going up against the Canaanites to fight them?” And God said, “Judah will go. I’ve given the land to him.” The men of Judah said to those of their brother Simeon, “Go up with us to our territory and we’ll fight the Canaanites. Then we’ll go with you to your territory.” And Simeon went with them.
    Judges 1:1‭-‬3 MSG

This is so like me(us). Once the LORD has given me directions, doubt and fear will begin to creep in. I begin to look and seek help or counsel from others. When in all reality my hope and VICTORY is in Him alone. Just think about how many testimonies I have left behind because of the lack of faith.
Lord forgive me, remove all doubt and fear from within.

    God is more than enough!!

And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? …
    Matthew 8:26 KJV

I will bless you with a future filled with hope—a future of success, not of suffering. You will turn back to me and ask for help, and I will answer your prayers.
    Jeremiah 29:11‭-‬12 CEV

With all your heart you must trust the Lord and not your own judgment. Always let him lead you, and he will clear the road for you to follow.
    Proverbs 3:5‭-‬6 CEV

  2. 28 And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out.

Matthew 13: 27 So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares?

28 He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up?

29 But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them.

30 Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.

Letting the Canaanites stay around made it difficult because they were able to influence the people of God and infiltrated their believes in such a way that the Gulf still fighting today. A day will come when our Judge will return and separate the tares from the wheat!!! That’s why it is important that we pay attention of who is influencing our children’s lives for then it can be too late and the tares have choked them from growing and the reapers will come to separate them at the time of harvest. Lord shine your Glorious light over our children that don’t matter where they may be at they grow so y’all in you that it will be easy to differentiate between them and the tares of this world in Jesus Name Amen

  3. 27 Neither did Manasseh drive out the inhabitants of Bethshean and her towns, nor Taanach and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns: but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.
28 And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out.
29 Neither did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.

They were told to destroy everyone take over the land. they only did part of the commandment.
They take the land over but when it came to driving out the enemy Israel decided that they wanted to make money off they and put tribute on them.
this did not only go ageist their instructions that they were given but it also opened a door to disobedience and the enemy began to work and influence their minds hearts.
The devil will take his time if he has to because his goal is to get us to fall to go ageist God and his word.
We must be very diligent at listening to his words and instructions and follow them so we don’t open ourselves up to something that could bring us down.

  4. 6 But Adonibezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.

7 And Adonibezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.

The Bible easily dictates that eye for eye. Here we see Judah and Simeon capture Adonibezek and when they do they cut his thumbs and his big toes off. This is the exact thing that he has done to 70 other kings to render them useless and taken them in as slaves. It is funny that what you do to others will eventually find its way back to you.

Scripture states the same with judgment, be careful how you judge someone, because you will be judged by the same judgement. As long as we will follow God’s will he will be the only judge. Don’t let the enemy cause you to judge and don’t let the enemy cut your thumbs and great toes to become a slave to something that will cost you an eternal death and lose out on God. Be mindful and watch for the Lord drawers nigh.

  5. 3. And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.

When you are battling something that is bigger than what you can defeat alone, don’t be afraid to ask your brother for help.
It’s not a sign of weakness, it shows determination…”If I can’t defeat it alone, I will get help, but I will defeat it!”

  6. LIVE – GIVE JESUS
    CHOSEN LEADERS

1 Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the Lord, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?
2 And the Lord said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.

Joshuas death reveals his huge failure as a Leader, something that gave him great favor and victory. A known successor. As Moses identified and elevated Joshua, the people knew, trusted and followed Joshua. But now the people are left wondering who to follow.

Thankfully, Joshua taught them to seek the LORD and they did for now. The LORD answered with HIS choice of Leadership.

    Judah = Praise

Praise will faltten walls, clear paths, confuse adversaries, praise will defeat foes, elevate GOD and lead to VICTORY.

Principal being here is; when we do not know what to do or who to follow. GO forth with Praise. The Canaanites are a type of the flesh that we struggle with to Israel. Notice a simple principle here in this chapter that will help us to overcome carnality in our lives.

17 And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they slew the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.

    Judah defeated the Canaanites (flesh).

    BUT

21 And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.

No other tribe could drive out the flesh, BUT chose to live with and coexist with it.

Praise is the one act, one event, one experience that will defeat our flesh. This is why we cannot afford to only Praise when we “feel” like. But PRAISE is what we do.

  7. Judges 1
1 Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the Lord, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?

Trust in God when your leader is no longer there.
One if the most important lessons we must learn is to trust God. Isreal was left without a leader and the first thing the people did ;they asked of God. They still had some enemies to defeat. You may find yourself surrounded by the enemy but always be mindful God is right there. In the heat of the battle you may not be able to get a hold of your leader but knowing and applying all that has been instilled into your life by leadership by your pastor “should lead you right to asking God. I’m not surprised that God said Judah would be sent. When you don’t know what to do Send up Praise . God has us surrounded and through trust in Him and holding on to all that is being taught by leaders faithfully you can trust in God. Trust in the Lord and send up praise two key elements of being rooted. Don’t waiver at the sons of this world. Hold fast to the promises of God .
    Live Jesus Give Jesus

  8. 32 But the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: for they did not drive them out.
One of the mistakes we see over and over being made by Israel is that they didn’t drive out the enemy, it was left unfinished. We must get rid of everything that is hindering us from giving God our best. Let’s serve God with all of our heart. He deserves our best.

  9. Judges 1:3-4
    3) And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.
    4) And Judah went up; and the LORD delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they slew of them in Bezek ten thousand.

“It only takes 2 – Judah and Simeon were brothers”
We may not be in a literal battle today, but we are in a spiritual battle. The best thing we can do is link up with a brother/or sister and fight this battle together.

St. Matthew 18:19 says, “Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my father which is in heaven.”

Also I found it amazing that they slew 10,000 in Bezek for Deut. 32:30 says, “How should one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, except their Rock had sold them, and the LORD had shut them up?”

It only takes 2 Praying Together,Working Together, and Fighting Together to defeat the enemy.

  10. Judges 1:2 [Amp] After The death of Joshua, the Israelites asked the Lord , Who shall go up first for us against the Canaanites to fight against them?
[2] And the Lord said, Judah shall go up; behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.
Ephesians 5: 19 -20 [Amp] Speak out to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual song’s offering praise with voices ( And instruments) and making melody with all your heart to the Lord.
[20] At all times and for everything thanks in name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father.
Let Everything that breath praise the Lord. Send up Judah. Lift it with Praise. Praise is victory. Give God all the Glory and Honer.

  11. Some of the cities they drove the ppl out of their land, took ownership of it and lived there. However some cities they just moved in and took over. We find that with the tribe of Dan. They moved in and let the Amorites live with them a d in this chapter we find the Amorites drove the tribe of Dan to the mountains.

Sometimes we don’t take all the steps necessary for complete victory. When God says separate yourself from something and you just hide it away just Incase you need it later then that thing still has a strong hold on you and could overtake you and rule your life again.

It is best to cut the head off if that stronghold when given the opportunity so that you don’t have to deal with any longer.

  12. 17 And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they slew the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.

We are not meant to fight alone. there’s nothing wrong with any of us asking for help. One of the enemy’s tactics is to get each person feeling like they’re fighting a battle that no one will understand so they don’t ask for help and they end up suffering all the more when there were people who would have stood beside them helping them fight that battle because they had fought it as well. Never underestimate the power of numbers, the church is a church for a reason while God seeks to have an individual relationship with everyone of us he is also guiding us to thrive together as a whole.

  13. iLove Jesus
“The Sell Out that Paid Out”

24 And the spies saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Shew us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will shew thee mercy.

25 And when he shewed them the entrance into the city, they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family

This feller just sold his whole city out to the invading army of God. He chose to receive mercy and grace and favor and sell out all his neighbors. The city went up in flames but this feller has new found fame. This feller named Cuz built him a city named Luz.

When you think about what this feller did what does it bring to mind? To me it reminds me of when I sold out this old wicked world and turned to Jesus. I chose mercy and truth and He gave me keys to the new city that new Jerusalem. Don’t want to follow that old crowd anymore, just call me a sellout that one day is going to pay out for sure.

  14. 28 And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out.

We know Israel will now have to deal with the Canaanites form now on-and into modern times. They war today over the land that should have been all theirs. But they did not fully obey God. A measure of victory can only last so long…we must have complete victory to be at peace on all sides. Victory thru submission.

  15. 1:2 And the Lord said: Judah shall go up , behold I have delivered the land into your hand.
    —— 🙌🙌🙌🙌🎶🎶🎵🎵🎵🙌🎶🎵🎵🎶
Us children of God should always be going up
Let us go up ( to the mountain ) let’s bring praises unto God this morning. And a thankful heart.
Let’s take what the Lord said it’s ours.

  16. The Asherites dwelt among the Cannaties . They should have been driven out. When we are saved we must get rid of all our old sinning ways and “friends” that are in sin. We cannot partially do this, we must go all the way to prevent temptation, as the Cannaties should have gotten rid of all the Asherites.

  17. 2 And the Lord said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.

Joshua the leader is gone and the people are searching for the person that will lead them to their next deliverance. Yet it was already among them. Judah was already prepared to do just that. We have the ability within us to praise our way through. We must be willing to accept the challenge and do it.

  18. 2 And the Lord said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.

There is something about when you praise. God will deliver your enemies into your hand. So, don’t be afraid to shout HALLELUJAH! It is in your praise where you will find freedom. Keep praising and keep moving forward.

  19. 1 Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the Lord, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?

2 And the Lord said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.

Being called out… Many times the Lord has called out to his servants. Moses, Isaac, Abraham, even Adam. He called them by name, “here i am” and each one made themselves available immediately. We have to be ready at all times to be called out.

  20. Judges 1:1-2
Here each tribe was disobedient to God’s command and it resulted in their living with their enemies. So they paid the price by not walking in all God had for them and making themselves vulnerable. If we satisfy ourselves with less than God’s best for us we will never become all that God wants us to be. I pray that the Lord help us to see clearly the danger in our own lives of allowing the enemy to have any part of us by accepting sin, no matter how small. Lord, Jesus forgive us and cleanse us this day to serve You with an undivided heart.

  21. Judges 1:28-36

FAILURE TO DRIVE OUT THE ENEMY

The Israelites failed to drive out the enemy from the land, as the LORD told them to do, but rather chose to live with the enemy. In failure to drive them out, the Israelites let themselves be influenced by the false gods and idols of the enemy, which caused a weakening of Israel’s strength and exposed them to evil. We must be very careful to keep ourselves as free from exposure to the evils of the world as possible.

Our God loves us very much and wants us to love Him. This we need to do. Love God by obeying Hima and His commandments. Reading the Bible and blog every day helps. Take time to study. And follow the pastor’s lead. He has our best interests at heart and is a man of God. Thank God for his leadership!!!

    Hallelujah!!

Praises be to the Lord God Almighty! In Jesus name!!!

  22. “When the men of Judah attacked, the Lord gave them victory over the Canaanites and Perizzites, and they killed 10,000 enemy warriors at the town of Bezek.‭‭(Judges‬ ‭1:4NLT)

The faith of the men of Judah was strong enough to believe in the Lord that he would bring them through this battle and have victory over the 10,000 enemy warriors. When the enemy try’s to steal something from you it’s time to put the armor of God on and put our game face on and let our enemy know that we serve a mighty God that he is in control of our lives. It shouldn’t matter at all how many enemy warriors comes at us for the army angels of Lord are on our side. (‭‭Romans‬ ‭8:31‬ ‭KJV‬‬)“What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?”

I give you Praise to your Great Name Father!!

  23. The last territory

Bethshemesh was never fully conquered. Still to this day it is a city that has never had a solid rule over it. It is under Israeli control but it has a long Pagan stronghold in it. There are folks that say that when Jesus gave up the ghost and said it is finished that everything was won but that is not true. We were won on that day. The church was won in that day but there are many territories and strongholds still for us to take down. Jesus said himself that we would do even greater works than himself so that means we will conquer more territory than the man Christ Jesus did in his ministry. He left it all in our hands. We are victorious and we know how it all ends but from here till then we have some Bethsemeshes to conquer.

  24. 1 Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the Lord, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?

2 And the Lord said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.

What enemy or battle are you facing? Judah shall go up against it. . Your praise is you weapon. When you send up a praise God then takes his place and becomes judge over all situations.

  25. 15 And she said unto him, Give me a blessing: for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water.

Wow look what your PRAISE can do. If you really want your blessing get with Judah and inhabit it. God shows up in your praise. You can be a great warrior but without praise how else will our God step in. Not saying he can’t, but it’s Inevitable when you start praising God will always show up.

  26. Verses 1-4 MSG “A time came after the death of Joshua when the People of Israel asked God, “Who will take the lead in going up against the Canaanites to fight them?” And God said, “Judah will go. I’ve given the land to him.” The men of Judah said to those of their brother Simeon, “Go up with us to our territory and we’ll fight the Canaanites. Then we’ll go with you to your territory.” And Simeon went with them. So Judah went up. God gave them the Canaanites and the Perizzites. They defeated them at Bezek—ten military units!” The People of Israel no longer had a leader; but, they remembered what their prior leaders did do and that was “ask God” for direction. In their obedience, they got victory. Later on though they found it easy to live along side half victories; instead of taking full control of what was theirs. We cannot allow ourselves to try and live along side sin; but, cut it fully out, drive it out and take full victory (control) over it.

  27. 1 Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the Lord, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?
2 And the Lord said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.

Praise goes first and guarantees your victory! I’m gonna see a victory!

  28. 28 And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out.

When you don’t fully take care of your problems the first time, you will have issues with them later down the road. They dealt with the Cannabites and put them to tribute, but they DID NOT “. . . utterly drive them out.”

When you don’t fully take care of your problems the first time, you will have issues with them later down the road. If you just address your issues but don’t fully turn away and make a change and give it fully to God you will keep having a reoccurring issue. Until you fully give God the problem, you will not fully possess your promise or blessing. Just as the Children of Israel did not fully possess the land. They had to drive out all others to receive their promise to its entirety.

  29. 1After the death of Joshua, the Israelites asked the LORD, “Which tribe should go first to attack the Canaanites?” 2 The LORD answered, “Judah, for I have given them victory over the land.”

Judah-“”I will thank/praise the LORD”….If you do the same, you’ll have your victory. You have to speak it and it will be given.

  30. This is so important for the set up of what’s to come for the nation of Israel. Because so many tribes failed to drive out the enemy from their land we can see where the struggle that Israel had came from. Because of this Israel struggled for hundreds of years to stay away from idolatry and worship the One True Living God.

  31. When someone looses their thumbs they loose the ability to hold on to, grip, and manipulate things. When someone losses their big toes they loose stability.

This means they couldn’t ahold on to things and they had no balance.

Jesus help us to be stable in you and lead a balanced life so that we don’t fall from where you have placed us.

  32. “After the death of Joshua, the Israelites asked the Lord, “Which tribe should go first to attack the Canaanites?””
    ‭‭Judges‬ ‭1:1‬ ‭NLT‬‬

What we find out about man in Judges is depressing, but what we find out about God in Judges is wonderful. On the human side, it is a story of disobedience and disaster, and on the Divine side, of continued direction and deliverance.

  33. Direction, before action

    Judges 1:2 KJV
[2] And the Lord said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.
