Now it came to pass after this, that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon died, and his son reigned in his stead.

And David said, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father shewed kindness to me. And David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. So the servants of David came into the land of the children of Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him.

But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? are not his servants come unto thee for to search, and to overthrow, and to spy out the land?

Wherefore Hanun took David’s servants, and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the midst hard by their buttocks, and sent them away.

Then there went certain, and told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them: for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.

And when the children of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the children of Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire them chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia, and out of Syriamaachah, and out of Zobah.

So they hired thirty and two thousand chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people; who came and pitched before Medeba. And the children of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.

And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.

And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array before the gate of the city: and the kings that were come were by themselves in the field.

10 Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose out of all the choice of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians.

11 And the rest of the people he delivered unto the hand of Abishai his brother, and they set themselves in array against the children of Ammon.

12 And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will help thee.

13 Be of good courage, and let us behave ourselves valiantly for our people, and for the cities of our God: and let the Lord do that which is good in his sight.

14 So Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh before the Syrians unto the battle; and they fled before him.

15 And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, they likewise fled before Abishai his brother, and entered into the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem.

16 And when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they sent messengers, and drew forth the Syrians that were beyond the river: and Shophach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.

17 And it was told David; and he gathered all Israel, and passed over Jordan, and came upon them, and set the battle in array against them. So when David had put the battle in array against the Syrians, they fought with him.

18 But the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew of the Syrians seven thousand men which fought in chariots, and forty thousand footmen, and killed Shophach the captain of the host.

19 And when the servants of Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with David, and became his servants: neither would the Syrians help the children of Ammon any more.

    My first thought is how this records the unchanging human nature. Often this attitude can be found in people that reject the body of Christ/church. As the chapter progresses, we can see the end result was bondage, which can be translated as sin.

    Eventually you have to make a choice trouble come from the front and from the back it’s time to make a decision of all the choices in your life Choose Jesus.

Verses 6-7 MSG “When it dawned on the Ammonites that as far as David was concerned, they stank to high heaven, they hired, at a cost of a thousand talents of silver (thirty-seven and a half tons!), chariots and horsemen from the Arameans of Naharaim, Maacah, and Zobah—thirty-two thousand chariots and drivers; plus the king of Maacah with his troops who came and set up camp at Medeba; the Ammonites, too, were mobilized from their cities and got ready for battle.” One of the commentaries on this chapter brings forth the thought: There is no way of knowing what might have happened in this situation if the Ammonite king had gone to David, admitted his error, and asked for forgiveness. Instead, he “sent … to hire” horses and soldiers from neighboring countries in order to prepare for war. We see once again in this chapter, how listening to the wrong thing caused friction instead of the intent of kindness. Then secondly, we see the reaction to the friction, when it could have possibly been avoided by admitting the wrong and asking for forgiveness. Lord help us to part of the solution and not the problem, as we see the high cost of so many bad decisions in this chapter. The reaction could have saved so many lives and brought forth a different outcome in what started out as an innocent act of kindness.

    2 Chronicles 20: 17 [ amp] You shall not need to fight in this battle; and see the deliverance of the Lord [ Who is] with you, O Judah and Jerusalem.
    Fear not nor be dismissed.
    Tomorrow go out against them, for the Lord is with you.
    Exodus 13: 14 [ amp] And when , in time to come, your son asks you, What does this mean? You shall say to him, By strength of hand the Lord brought us out from Egypt, from the house of bondage and bondmen.

  5. “The Ammonite troops came out and drew up their battle lines at the entrance of the city, while the other kings positioned themselves to fight in the open fields. When Joab saw that he would have to fight on both the front and the rear, he chose some of Israel’s elite troops and placed them under his personal command to fight the Arameans in the fields. He left the rest of the army under the command of his brother Abishai, who was to attack the Ammonites. “If the Arameans are too strong for me, then come over and help me,” Joab told his brother. “And if the Ammonites are too strong for you, I will help you. Be courageous! Let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God. May the Lord’s will be done.””

    Be of good courage, and let us be strong…
    Courage and strength are not matters of feeling and circumstance. They are matters of choice, especially when God makes His strength available to us. We can be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.

    “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.”

  7. “Some time after this, King Nahash of the Ammonites died, and his son Hanun became king. David said, “I am going to show loyalty to Hanun because his father, Nahash, was always loyal to me.” So David sent messengers to express sympathy to Hanun about his father’s death. But when David’s ambassadors arrived in the land of Ammon,”

    David wasn’t content to feel kindness towards Hanun. He did something to bring the grieving man comfort. Let’s show kindness today.

  8. 4 Wherefore Hanun took David’s servants, and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the midst hard by their buttocks, and sent them away.

    5 Then there went certain, and told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them: for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.

    6 And when the children of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the children of Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire them chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia, and out of Syriamaachah, and out of Zobah.

    7 So they hired thirty and two thousand chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people; who came and pitched before Medeba. And the children of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.

    It is a repulsive act that was committed toward David and his men by Hanun. We see that when you do things that is done out of ignorance or stupidity, the actions do not go unpunished. When you cause something to happen and you think that there will be no recourse of action, that is foolish. Because with every cause, there will be an effect that will affect you whether physically or spiritually. Everyone will be held accountable for every action under the sun. David sent his men to go against the men of Ammon and the Syrians. But when the battle rages hot against them the men of Ammon and the Syrians fled.

    Remember we have a great opportunity to be examples to the world, so even when bad is done toward the church, we have to be ready to follow the guidance of God and the man of God. We can not react on our own, because that would be foolish. We have to live Jesus to give Jesus.

  10. When a powerful person or ruler is making decisions, the importance of seeking good first is a must. Many lives were lost because this was not done by both opponents. Even though we always think of a battle is composed of a good side and a bad side this is not always a fact. Live Jesus Give Jesus

  11. 19:19 and when the servants of hedasherser saw that they were put before to the worst of Israel
    They made peace with David, and became his servants.
    Neither would the Syrians help the children of Ammon anymore.

    If God said it, then he will do it.

    Even when it’s tough, got to lean on God
    And remember who you are.
    They saw the salvation of the Lord. And made a choice to come and to serve instead of fight…..

  14. iLove the Kingdom of Jesus

    1Ch 19:7 So they hired thirty and two thousand chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people; who came and pitched before Medeba. And the children of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.

    It doesn’t matter how many people the devil recruits to be on his team, the Lord always brings us the victory. It may seem like we are out numbered, but you have to remember only 1/3 of the angels fell. Just a quick interpretation, we outnumber the enemy 2:1. Boom!

    What a Battle cry this is! Rallying the troops by encouraging them with morality. He didn’t motivate them to get out there and destroy and obliterate their enemy but told them to be a good courage and to act valiantly and let the Lord do what is good. The best way to lead people is to encourage them to do what is right. He could have had them focus on their Battle tactics but instead encourage them in the Lord. True leadership leads by empowerment from within

    David’s army decided up front to be courageous no matter that they saw the enemy in front of and behind them. They drew courage for the battle, their people and cities and relyed on God. People are watching us as we go through the trials of life and we must draw our strength and courage from God. It will be the example to our children, our brothers and sisters and other onlookers. Leaning on God and giving him praise in advance is always the way to fight.

  17. 12 And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will help thee.

    13 Be of good courage, and let us behave ourselves valiantly for our people, and for the cities of our God: and let the Lord do that which is good in his sight

    It looked bleak for joab and abishai but they made a pact to help each other if the other was in trouble. Brotherly love! They encouraged themselves in the Lord just as their leader David does. They said let us be leaders and put on a good face and be strong for our people. You could tell that they were probably scared. You could tell they felt like the odds were against them . But God!
    As they set arrays of men before the opposing forces those opposing forces fled!

    This is the power of encouraging yourself in the LORD and leading with courage in the face of fear!!!!

    Joab knew after all human efforts were exhausted the victory was in Gods hand.

  19. 13 Be strong, and let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God. The Lord will do what is good in his sight.”

    We are living in a unique time and God is looking for a people that will be strong and fight for their city and God’s people. This fight doesn’t need to be fought with hatful words or mans wisdom. This is a fight that needs to be fought on our knees.

    We must take up the whole armor of God and war a good war. The stronger we are in prayer and outreach the stronger we will be in advancing the Kingdom here on earth.

  20. 19 And when the servants of Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with David, and became his servants: neither would the Syrians help the children of Ammon any more.

    When someone ask you to do something make sure that’s not against God’s will or you may finish as a servant of your enemy. Clear everything you are going to do with God before you do it.

  21. “the Ammonite commanders said to Hanun, “Do you really think these men are coming here to honor your father? No! David has sent them to spy out the land so they can come in and conquer it!” So Hanun seized David’s ambassadors and shaved them, cut off their robes at the buttocks, and sent them back to David in shame.”

    The passage of scripture should help us understand that we must be careful who gives us advice. Not everyone is looking out for our good. And some people aren’t good influences. There’s no God like our God. He knows all and sees all. He can’t never lead us astray. He is the great Counselor and Shepherd. He will lead us and guide us if we allow him.

    11) The rest of the soldiers he placed in the hand of Abishai his brother, and they lined up against the Ammonites.
    12) He said, If the Arameans are to strong for me, then you shall help me; but if the Ammonites are too strong for you, I will help you.
    13) Be strong and let us show ourselves courageous for the sake of our people and for the cities of our God; and may the LORD do what is good in His sight.

    “Now When Joab Saw That The Battle Was Set Against Him In The Front And In The Rear”
    In this spiritual battle we are in, no matter how the battle may look to us, we must work together and support each other, and we must be strong and show ourselves courageous (brave) for we are fighting for the people and the city of Fort Worth.
    And as long as we are fighting this battle together, working together and supporting each other, and being strong and showing ourselves courageous, the LORD will do what is good in His sight.

  23. LIVE – GIVE JESUS
    HIRED VS HEART

    7 So they hired thirty and two thousand chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people; who came and pitched before Medeba. And the children of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.

    David was hurt to the heart when he heard and saw that his kindness was mocked and rejected. Realizing the error of their way, the children of Ammon HIRED an army. But the HIRED army was no match for the HEART feltresponse of Israel.

    This principal is applicable to us today. In ministry to others and defense of HIS Kingdom. We must serve from the heart. It is not a job to me, we work or labor, but it is from a HEART after GOD and for the people.

    If you view your opportunity to serve as a job at the church. I encourage you today to seek a change of HEART during our Church FAST and ask JESUS to guide your heart that we will serve from the heart and not because we were hired or selected.

    These men had proven themselves prior to this battle, else Joab would not have chosen them. What we do, how we live, how we serve Jesus, all tells the story of our lives. It lets God know who is on His team, and it also lets the enemy know whose team we are on.

    If we are haphazard about our relationship with the Lord then perhaps the Lord will chose others to take our place when the spiritual battle gets hot. We must be strong, vigilant, bold and fierce when it comes to the war for our souls and the souls of others. The enemy doesn’t play. He may act like he’s our friend now, wooing us to sleep with entertainment, pleasure, laxidazical worship, but really he’s pulling the wool over our eyes and we must AWAKE and get busy about the Kingdom. After all the King is coming back real soon!

    How do we fight for our people, for this city?

    It is not a fight we can win with physical weapons, but a fight that must be won through prayer and fasting.

  26. “More than a Conqueror”……we gain servants through the spoils of war!

    19 And when the servants of Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with David, and became his servants: neither would the Syrians help the children of Ammon any more.

  27. 5When David heard what had happened to the men, he sent messengers to tell them, “Stay at Jericho until your beards grow out, and then come back.” For they felt deep shame because of their appearance.

    We should never make anyone feels ashamed to the point they want to stay in hiding. Make everyone feel welcome, and treat everyone with respect. Be friendly to everyone.

    This is a great way to make friends. David showed the initiative to show kindness. It was sad that the gesture was not received right but was turned by bad influence. You attempt to be friends with someone yet there still may be those that will not receive you. Perhaps blinded by the negative words or thoughts of others.

    The God we serve is a powerful God. He is a strong God. He is greater than anything you are going through. He is worthy to be praise, He is the one that has brought us out of darkness into his marvelous light. No weapon formed from the Devil shall prosper because Jesus has won the victory

  30. David being a just man, did show kindness and was trying to do the right thing. It is a shame that some people cannot except that people try to do the right thing. If you are a person who does not know the Lord, perhaps you doubt and mistrust others. I try to give people a chance that they are honest and doing right. Sometimes I have to pray to make sure they are not trying to pull the wool over my eyes! The Lord will always help us IF we allow him to! Thank you for this day Jesus!

    When God is on your side, he’ll make your enemies turn against their allies. It’s time to worry if what you’re doing for the ministry is in vain. Those that work for the kingdom will receive a great reward. If God before us, he’s more then the whole world against you.

    Be careful who you have around to council you in your life. Sometimes we allow the wrong people to speak into our lives and they can send us down a path of destruction and pain. We must always seek God and the man of God to lead us through the right path. We must also guard our hearts and minds from those that do not have the Holy Ghost leading them.

  33. 13 Be of good courage, and let us behave ourselves valiantly for our people, and for the cities of our God: and let the Lord do that which is good in his sight.

    With the Lord there will always be victory in every war and every inconvenience. During this time let us all be filled with the word of God, let our minds and our spirit be of faith and of kindness. At the end let us all be strong in faith and strong in our praise and prayer, God will be right next to us. With God there’s victory. So stay looking up to him letting him guide you and let him prepare you.

    This reminds me of how important it is to know who we allow in our circle and the power and influence we have on our friends. Those around Hanun caused him to start a whole war over nothing. This is the danger of gossip. It sows destruction and division amongst those who weren’t even fighting, causing them to think that there is a problem when really there isn’t. When we allow gossip in, whether initiated by us or someone in our circle, it will always end in gratuitous pain and hurt.

    I thank God He shows us through His Word how detrimental gossip is. I pray we internalize this example and talk about the King rather than each other.

  36. 18 But the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew of the Syrians seven thousand men which fought in chariots, and forty thousand footmen, and killed Shophach the captain of the host.

    Your enemies will always flee from the presence of the Lord.

  37. 10 Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose out of all the choice of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians.

    Joab foresaw that the odds were against him!! He put two and two together.

    17 And it was told David; and he gathered all Israel, and passed over Jordan, and came upon them, and set the battle in array against them. So when David had put the battle in array against the Syrians, they fought with him.
    18 But the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew of the Syrians seven thousand men which fought in chariots, and forty thousand footmen, and killed Shophach the captain of the host.
    19 And when the servants of Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with David, and became his servants: neither would the Syrians help the children of Ammon any more.

    Yet, even though Joab saw the impossible, they still rose up for they knew who was on their side!! David our things in motion and on! Never get overwhelmed by the perceived impossible! Just know that all things are possible through Him!! Who is on your side and backing you up? Don’t for get whose child you are!!

  38. 7 So they hired thirty and two thousand chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people; who came and pitched before Medeba. And the children of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.

    8 And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.

    Both accounts of this story in Chronicles and Samuel neither one say that David was frightened by this huge army that had come against him. David simply trusted his men to get the job done. When you develop that kind of bond between leader and servant, nothing can stand in your way. I pray that all those of us following the leadership of POFW can find this kind of resolve in each other. Hell won’t be able to figure it out.

    Isn’t it crazy how the Lord will take some bad and turn it for good for his kingdom we see it all the time. Each of us have a testimony and I doubt any of us lived so perfectly. Maybe one or two but most of us weren’t the best people now look at God he can turn you around and use you for his Kingdom and you can see people’s lives change just like yours did

  40. 10 Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose out of all the choice of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians.

    Who do you choose? When making any type of decision we have to make sure that we are choosing the will of God. Gods plans are better than our own plans. The enemy might paint everything beautiful and “better” but we cant go what what we see physically but spiritually. Don’t let the enemy deceive you and take your salvation. No matter what your salvation is MORE important than anything else. CHOOSE JESUS!!!

  41. “Some time after this Nahash king of the Ammonites died and his son succeeded him as king. David said, “I’d like to show some kindness to Hanun son of Nahash—treat him as well and as kindly as his father treated me.” So David sent condolences about his father’s death. But when David’s servants arrived in Ammonite country and came to Hanun to bring condolences, the Ammonite leaders warned Hanun, “Do you for a minute suppose that David is honoring your father by sending you comforters? Don’t you know that he’s sent these men to snoop around the city and size it up so that he can capture it?”

    So Hanun seized David’s men, shaved them clean, cut off their robes halfway up their buttocks, and sent them packing.”

    Be careful who you listen to. David sent his men as a measure of kindness. They were taken the wrong way because of the influence of others. You can’t let those around you influence you so much that you don’t realize what you are doing is wrong.
