Proverbs 20

Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

The fear of a king is as the roaring of a lion: whoso provoketh him to anger sinneth against his own soul.

It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.

The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.

Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.

Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?

The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.

A king that sitteth in the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes.

Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?

10 Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them are alike abomination to the Lord.

11 Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.

12 The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the Lord hath made even both of them.

13 Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.

14 It is naught, it is naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.

15 There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.

16 Take his garment that is surety for a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.

17 Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.

18 Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.

19 He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.

20 Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.

21 An inheritance may be gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be blessed.

22 Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the Lord, and he shall save thee.

23 Divers weights are an abomination unto the Lord; and a false balance is not good.

24 Man’s goings are of the Lord; how can a man then understand his own way?

25 It is a snare to the man who devoureth that which is holy, and after vows to make enquiry.

26 A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them.

27 The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly.

28 Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy.

29 The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the grey head.

30 The blueness of a wound cleanseth away evil: so do stripes the inward parts of the belly.

  1. 15 There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.

Often financial gain is considered to be the goal of our working efforts. Nevertheless, the knowledge and wisdom on how to invests finances is superior to a nest egg. The greatness investment one can make is in a relationship with Jesus.

  2. 3 It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.
4 The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.

The word of God tells us
Eph 612 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
For the longest time I used to try to spiritualize things thinking that our battles were always spiritual until I began looking deeper into the battle that man fights that don’t involve some things. What I love about this chapter in Proverbs is it’s talking about that internal struggle that we sometimes fight to either push through our fleshly desires or to succumb to them. The way God designed our bodies is it becomes a conditioned response mechanism according to the decisions that we make each day. Whenever we refuse something that we desire, whether it’s good or bad, our mental and emotional aspects become stronger and whenever we follow our fleshly whims consistently over an amount of time, it is as such as well. But this proverb is teaching us that long before the scientists ever started doing research on the body and the Brain. God was sending us a messenger through Solomon teaching us about the principles of life any importance of following and leading according to the situation. This is why I love the word of God so much it teaches things about life long before the ” professional” ever studied it.

  4. 22 Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the Lord, and he shall save thee

    Romans 12:17
“Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.

19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.”
    ‭‭

  5. :22 say not thou, I will recompense evil
but wait on the Lord, and he shall save thee.

Commit your way to the Lord
    Focus on the Lord
    Wait upon the Lord
He knows how, and when to take care
Of the matter, He will stand up for me.
    He will do it better.
And I will be delivered and with peace .
    Good is in control.
    Hallelujah 🙌
My trust is in the Lord.

  6. 9 Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?

By his efforts, no one can cleanse himself from sin. Who can say,” I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin”? If a man thinks he is pure, he is a victim of pure delusion.
But there is cleansing through the precious blood of Jesus Christ. True believes have “ washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb”

13 “And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they?”
‭‭14 “And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they?”
    ‭‭

  7. Proverbs 20:4 The lazy man will not plow because of winter; He will beg during harvest and have nothing.

King Solomon had plenty to say about the “sluggard.”or the habitually lazy person. The “sluggard”, makes only one commitment to his leisure. He will try and excuse to shy away from honest labor.

Our time is limited. We cannot retrieve misused or wasted time. Jesus stressed this when He said, “I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work” John (9:4 ). We must remain diligent and doing good and encouraging others to do likewise.

Also Proverbs 19:15 Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and an idol soul shall suffer hunger.

Don’t be LAZY, time to work in the Kingdom of God!

  8. 3 It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.
I think this means a man trying to do right will mind his own business, a foolish man will meddle and cause himself strife.

  9. 15 There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.

The most valuable thing we can gain is wisdom. Wise people are able to navigate life with less casualties because they are constantly applying what they know.

Lord teach me to walk in wisdom and knowledge to lead your people.

    • 6 Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?

7 The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.

      Matthew 25:21
His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

Today we are living in a “microwave” generation … everyone is wanting everything now, no patience involved!
We must be willing to do all the hard work and be willing to submit ourselves under the authority of our Shepherd and get our hands dirty and do whatever we can for the service of the Kingdom!

  10. LIVE – GIVE JESUS2
    JESUS KNOWS ALREADY

24 Man’s goings are of the Lord; how can a man then understand his own way?

Guilt is a great burden to man. We often fear how others will view our frailties, mistakes or choices. However when considering our soul we realize that GOD is faithful and just to forgive us when we ask HIM.

We can confidently bring our sins, mistakes and frailties to JESUS, because HE already knows about them. This deals with our past. Our future is very similar, JESUS already knows the plans HE has for us, it is up to us to be patient and trust JESUS for the right and proper timing for it to come to pass.

We cannot say that we have life figured out, we need the LORD to understand our way. This makes LIVE JESUS so important to our past, present and future.

  11. Proverbs 20
    Knowing what is right is like deep water in the heart;
a wise person draws from the well within.

Drinking from the well of Living Waters.
I must draw my strength from the Spirit of God that dwells within me.
Righteous peace and joy in the Holy Ghost

  12. iLove the Kingdom of Jesus2

22 Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the Lord, and he shall save thee.

Wow, this scripture speaks volumes. In this crazy world we live in, it is very tempting to want to “get back” those who sin against you. We should however trust the Lord and let Him fight our battle.

  13. 29 The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the grey head.

Reading this reminded me of what my father would say about his gray hairs-that they were the silver of his wisdom! I understand now what he meant. For me he died being my superman. Since I join the Army, I wasn’t around very much, sure I went to visit every year but he always looked pretty good. Even inside the coffin, as I played with his full of salt and pepper hair, his hand looked strong and beaten by the years of work. It wasn’t until I saw a photo a while ago of my nephew strong and young beside my father that he looked old and weak to me. Young man be aware that you also will be old, seat at the elders feet, let them teach you and tell you about the old days, listen even when they repeat themselves because there will be details in the second story telling that he did not say in the first. My dad also taught me why battle the same battles he did if I can learn from him how he walked victorious. They can’t live our lives for us but I hold dear to his lessons and watch for the next battle to come it might be one that he already fought and I know how to win thanks to him. There are physical battles that can teach you how to win the spiritual one, so warriors, pick up your double edge sword, put on the armor of salvation, and stand ready with a sickle on the other hand for the times calls for us to be both gatherers and warriors, the sowers are moving fast and we are short in n laborers!!! Stand Guard and Watch for the day of SALVATION IS HERE!!!

  14. 19 He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.

So many people have a need to hear themselves talk and they will pretty much have to say whatever and whenever they want. I have found that it will make you either appear wise or a fool. I have lived by the theory that if you can’t tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth then you will appear a liar for all to see. When you fall into that trap of the enemy, you will bring discourse and chaos to yourself.

I have found that when you stand on the truth, it brings peace and honor to you. Some may not like the truth but it will never put you in a difficult situation and it will keep your spirit right with the Lord. It is good medicine for the heart to speak the truth. Living Jesus is about being a great example for those to see inside the church and outside of the church. Let’s be like Jesus in all we do and all we say.

  15. AMP – 3 It is an honor for a man to keep away from strife [by handling situations with thoughtful foresight],
But any fool will [start a] quarrel [without regard for the consequences].

We are in control of the battles that we fight. What is the spoil? Is this battle even worth the time it takes to bring it up?

We must not think that a person is passive just because they don’t take the bait for a fight. They may be weighing in their mind, what am I going to gain from going toe to toe about this matter?

There are consequences to every quarrel and sometimes it just is not worth it to be “right” and prove that we are “right.”

The old song says “if I hold my peace and let the Lord fight my battles, victory, victory shall be mine.”

The challenge in the hour we live in is everyone wants to prove they are right. We live in a defensive world. We take matters into our own hands and prove the point, rather than letting God prove for us. Sometimes we must take our hands and let Jesus take the wheel!

  16. 24 Man’s goings are of the Lord; how can a man then understand his own way?

Trust in the Lord! As we move along through life, simply walk in the spirit and according to His Word. He will never mislead us!

  17. Verse 7 AMP “The righteous man who walks in integrity and lives life in accord with his [godly] beliefs—How blessed [happy and spiritually secure] are his children after him [who have his example to follow].” Integrity: the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness. Be an example as you have been directed to be!

Verse 17 “Food gained by deceit is sweet to a man, But afterward his mouth will be filled with gravel [just as sin may be sweet at first, but later its consequences bring despair].” Same verse VOICE “At first the bread of lies tastes sweet until guilt reduces it to gravel in the mouth.” This reminds me of what Pastor has shared about his testimony as he tried to speak like before or use the same type of language as he did before; but, couldn’t. There is no part that deceit or lies have in our lives as we have no time to waste and no time to lose.

1 Peter 3:8-12 MSG says “Summing up: Be agreeable, be sympathetic, be loving, be compassionate, be humble. That goes for all of you, no exceptions. No retaliation. No sharp-tongued sarcasm. Instead, bless—that’s your job, to bless. You’ll be a blessing and also get a blessing. Whoever wants to embrace life and see the day fill up with good, Here’s what you do: Say nothing evil or hurtful; Snub evil and cultivate good; run after peace for all you’re worth. God looks on all this with approval, listening and responding well to what he’s asked; But he turns his back on those who do evil things.”

  18. Prov. 20: 22 [ amp] Do not say , I will repay evil ; wait [ expectantly] for the Lord, and He will rescue you.
Repay no one evil for evil , But take thought for what is honest and proper and noble [ aiming to be above reproach] in the sight of everyone.
But if your enemy is hungry feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; for by doing so , you will burning coals upon his head.
Love one another , and pray for one another.
Dont let yourself be overcome by evil ,
    But overcome evil with good.
    Be like Jesus.

  19. “The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.”
    ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭20:4‬ ‭KJV‬‬

In order to have a great harvest, we have to do the work! We can’t expect something to come out of nothing. I thank God we find strength in Him to reach the lost. I pray we never lose hope in reaching for souls!

  20. 22 Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the Lord, and he shall save thee.

23 Divers weights are an abomination unto the Lord; and a false balance is not good.

24 Man’s goings are of the Lord; how can a man then understand his own way?

  21. Proverbs 20:22, “Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee.”

We must remember, that in this world we are living, people are going to hurt us, wrong us, speak bad about us, etc… BUT it is not our place to recompense (reimburse, repay) evil for evil. We are to wait upon the LORD – put our trust and faith in Him – and He will keep us safe.
Let the Lord deal with them, For He is the God of our battles.

  22. 11Even children are known by the way they act,
whether their conduct is pure, and whether it is right.

Yes, in some ways children do reflect how they are raised by their parents. Their actions and the way they speak are learned from parents. As parents, we can only hope that others will say, their goes a good child.

  23. 13 Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.

Yes sleep is needed. But too much sleep is a waste of the little time we have . We cannot go back in time, so we must do it right the first time to try and make it the best life. Purpose!!! Everyone has a purpose !!!

  24. 15 There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.

Another version says it like this

15 Wise words are more valuable than much gold and many rubies.

Often times in my past and even up to this day its taken some time for me to practice the whole “think 3 seconds before responding” technique.

There is value in it though. I say it all the time our words and our tongues are a deadly weapon. Thats why the most powerful weapon is the word of God and sharper than any two edged sword. Ask the Lord for wisdom today and to guard your lips from saying anything hurtful or doubtful. be sure to use words of affirmation and encouragement today.

  25. “Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the Lord, and he shall save thee.”
    ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭20:22‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Karma, it’s the way the world thinks. But as a Christian my thoughts are totally different. When one has the mind of Christ, we think of love, forgiveness, mercy and grace.

Just like Jesus has forgiven us and has hold nothing against us, we need to do the same. Let’s release them, and not hold on to any grudges against them. Give every situation, problem and hurt over to Christ. We will see how He will take care of us all.

“And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.”
    ‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭4:8‬ ‭KJV‬‬

  26. For the last day of 2020…

    Proverbs 20:20
Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.

    Ephesians 6:
2 Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)

3 That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

  27. 8 A king that sitteth in the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes.
9 Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?

I love the weight that these two verses hold. “A king . . . scattereth away all evil with his eyes.” Those that are evil cannot look him in the eyes when judgement comes, because if they have done evil they are ashamed and cannot lie. “Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?” Can you? I repent daily. I repent of even things I don’t know that I did wrong. We could say the wrong thing and offend someone and they never show it or tell you. We could unintentionally do something at work or home that may hurt someone later or have other repercussions and we NOT know what happened. So, I repent daily for forgiveness of even things I did wrong that I don’t even realize I did wrong.

  28. 19 He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips

Just know that anyone who tells the secrets of someone else is the same person who will tell yours when your back is turned. Gossip is betrayal of privileged information. Be certain of the character of the person you confide in.

  29. 28 Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy.

Mercy and truth preserve the king. This two are good qualifications in leadership; not doing what we think is right but ruling according to God law. That means leading with tenderness and clemency, not leading with burdens and pressures; but showing compassion all the time. If we are going to lead, lead by example, just as our Lord and savior did.

  30. Proverbs 20:4 The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.

We must work to receive a way to physically survive. We also must work to be close to our Lord. If we do not work, we having nothing, if we do not love our Lord and engage to be close to Him, we also have NOTHING!
Thank you dear Jesus for this day.

  31. Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?
    Proverbs 20:6 KJV

There are many that say; yes I’ll be there. Or yes I commit to this in writing. Showing up, doing what you said you would turns out to be another story. Actions speak louder than words. The only way to show yourself faithful is with actions. To do what you say or committed to do. To be where you said you would be for the amount of time you agreed upon.

  32. In this failure I think that it was trying to say that God can handle and is handling all of our sins if we are bringing them to him! Think about it if you want something from someone and don’t ask, how are they going to know that you want it? This ask goes in your relationship with God! He loves to hear your voice. He can supply all of your needs! Even if you don’t want anything or something, just talk to him! Everyone likes to be appreciated when you talk back! Use your words for the better of people and your benefit! I hope that you take my last message to you on 2020 and apply it to your 2021! I love you all very much and happy New Years!

  33. Proverbs 20:24
The lord directs our steps, so why try to understand everything along the way?

There is peace and comfort knowing God is always with us and will never leave us.
    Thank you Jesus

  34. “A plan (motive, wise counsel) in the heart of a man is like water in a deep well, But a man of understanding draws it out.”
    ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭20:5‬ ‭AMP‬‬

My prayer as we head into a new year is that we would have understanding. When tough situations arise that would have wisdom and understanding as we make decisions.

  35. 3 It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.

It is my mission and duty in 2021 to give negativity absolutely none of my time. It is foolish to bicker with those who make game of arguing. Those who love to stir up stuff. I will walk away in mud conversation, I will hang up and totally ignore negativity. Life is too short to be caught up in strife.

  36. “Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.”
    ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭20:17‬ ‭KJV‬‬

While lies may get you to hat you want, they will be found out. That sweet thing that you desired will become something that you will want to spit out. Lies can’t stay sweet like honey because the true word is God is like honey and Jesus and lies are antonyms.

  37. 11 Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.

You shall know them by their fruit

  38. “The Lord directs our steps, so why try to understand everything along the way?”
    ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭20:24‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Imagine with me for a moment…we’re going on a road trip.
I place the destination in my maps, put gas in the tank, snacks ready, and we take off.
The only thing I don’t really trust the Maps application so instead I’m going to make my own route. The possibility that we actually reach our destination would be quite slim, due to numerous implications.

Unfortunately, when we live our lives trying to understand everything the Lord is directing we look as silly as trying to make our own road trip route without following the maps.

There is a blessing in obedience, and obedience doesn’t require understanding regardless of how much we think it should. It would be truly sad to follow the maps app blindly, and require terms to obey The Creator, Jesus.

I pray we are able to find peace in simple obedience, and allow Jesus to be the understanding.
