1 Kings 12

And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for all Israel were come to Shechem to make him king.

And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was yet in Egypt, heard of it, (for he was fled from the presence of king Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt;)

That they sent and called him. And Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came, and spake unto Rehoboam, saying,

Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee.

And he said unto them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed.

And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men, that stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, and said, How do ye advise that I may answer this people?

And they spake unto him, saying, If thou wilt be a servant unto this people this day, and wilt serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever.

But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him:

And he said unto them, What counsel give ye that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which thy father did put upon us lighter?

10 And the young men that were grown up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou speak unto this people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s loins.

11 And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father hath chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed, saying, Come to me again the third day.

13 And the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the old men’s counsel that they gave him;

14 And spake to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke: my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

15 Wherefore the king hearkened not unto the people; for the cause was from the Lord, that he might perform his saying, which the Lord spake by Ahijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

16 So when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents.

17 But as for the children of Israel which dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.

18 Then king Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the tribute; and all Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. Therefore king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.

19 So Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.

20 And it came to pass, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam was come again, that they sent and called him unto the congregation, and made him king over all Israel: there was none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only.

21 And when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah, with the tribe of Benjamin, an hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men, which were warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon.

22 But the word of God came unto Shemaiah the man of God, saying,

23 Speak unto Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and unto all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the remnant of the people, saying,

24 Thus saith the Lord, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his house; for this thing is from me. They hearkened therefore to the word of the Lord, and returned to depart, according to the word of the Lord.

25 Then Jeroboam built Shechem in mount Ephraim, and dwelt therein; and went out from thence, and built Penuel.

26 And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David:

27 If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of the Lord at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, even unto Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me, and go again to Rehoboam king of Judah.

28 Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

29 And he set the one in Bethel, and the other put he in Dan.

30 And this thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan.

31 And he made an house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sons of Levi.

32 And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Judah, and he offered upon the altar. So did he in Bethel, sacrificing unto the calves that he had made: and he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places which he had made.

33 So he offered upon the altar which he had made in Bethel the fifteenth day of the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and ordained a feast unto the children of Israel: and he offered upon the altar, and burnt incense.

  2. 12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed, saying, Come to me again the third day.

The story has always bothered me because he took the advice of his peers over the advice of his elders. People with experience and wisdom beyond us will often have the best direction. In the end, we choose what influences us. Whether it’s our peers who don’t have any extensive knowledge or experience on particular topics or the ones who have gone before us and paved the way. We get to choose who we let speak into our lives and whose lives are affected by those decisions. We must be vigilant and careful about the things that we do and how it affects others. We can easily lose our witness and testimony over being around the wrong people so we must continue to guard it

  3. “Rehoboam ignored the advice of the older advisors.”
    ‭‭1 Kings‬ ‭12:13‬ ‭CEV‬‬

First of all, We know that GOD is NOT the author of confusion. One thing my husband as said to his own children is ‘ learn from me, so you will NOT have to learn life the hard way.’ We have 4 children who raised in home where we taught them all the way of the Lord Jesus. But not all has followed the way of truth. Just to think that living life according to their ‘righteousness/knowledge’ is right.

Wisdom is for all. But only fools will despise it and reap( if they repent not) what they’ve sown.
There is consequences to everything we do.
    Be anxious for nothing…
    Seek counsel from your pastor…
    Be obedient.
You’ll save yourself from a lot of misery.

“Children with good sense accept correction from their parents, but stubborn children ignore it completely.

Live right, and you are safe! But sin will destroy you.

Too much pride causes trouble. Be sensible and take advice.

If you reject God’s teaching, you will pay the price; if you obey his commands, you will be rewarded.”

  4. 28 Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

This brought about confusion for the people. The same as Aaron did. Thinking that golden calves could represent God. That was a big mistake on their part.

“but you have done more evil than all who were before you, for you have gone and made for yourself other gods and molded images to provoke Me to anger, and have cast Me behind your back—”

The knowledge and wisdom of the elders that came before us is a valuable and precious tool that any Christian can have in their Arsenal. No matter what we do, we have to be led by some one that has authority over us and we can not shun the leadership or the experience of that person that has dealt with what we are dealing with. The sadness of the generation that we are living in, the folks have gone away from the instructions of the elders before us and also they have drifted away from the fear of the Lord. We have to remain focused on the word of God and be directed by the Holy Ghost.

Don’t let the younger generation that has not faced any adversity or circumstances to guide you a stray. We have to lean toward the guidance of those that paved the way to follow God to the promise of his glory and to our eternal home. Live Jesus to give Jesus!

    Leadership 101
These scriptures reveal that people truly desire and need a servant leader. A leader who is not going to speak ill of them and abuse them and a leader who’s going to lead the way with compassion. Ultimately, people will rebel against insincere leaders who are only there to use them

  7. I Kings 12
    Total Disaster
A Divided Kingdom because of different opinions and yet both Kings led the people right back into Idolatry.
Stay in The Book . Know the Word of God. Guard your hearts. God’s Word is truth and we must stay United. If you have a question about anything that is being taught I know assuredly that the ministry that leads us will be more than glad to show you and answer any questions you have . Don’t go after anything or anyone that will cause you to stray from God . God help us to stay close to You. I pray for our men and women of God as they seek You that they will hold on to Your Word for it is so important . Don’t look for the easy way because it could be the way that leads to disaster.

  8. 1King 12: 7-8 And they spake unto him, saying, if thou wilt be a servant unto this people this day.
And will serve them, and answer them, then they will be thy servants for ever.
[8] But he for sook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him and which stood before him.
Thank God for our elders of the church for they are good leaders they can give you good advice.
We can also be leaders as we take advice from the word of God.
By helping lost souls and being a servant to them and teaching the word of God.
Prov. 9:8-9 Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee; rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.
[9] Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser; teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and the knowledge of the Holy is understanding.
Wisdom and knowledge comes from the Bible.
    Thank you Jesus.

  9. 28 Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
29 And he set the one in Bethel, and the other put he in Dan.
30 And this thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan.

Jeroboam made these 2 places for worship to keep the people from going to Jerusalem, and caused them to worship idols. Of course this was done for his personal gain and out of fear for his life too. We must stay in the book and keep the apostolic doctrine no matter what. We can’t let convenience or persecution rob us of our faith.

  10. 28 Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
29 And he set the one in Bethel, and the other put he in Dan.
30 And this thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan.

You shall not make for yourselves an idol, nor any image of anything that is in the heavens above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: you shall not bow yourself down to them, nor serve them, for I, Yahweh your God, am a jealous God.

It is a commandment that we should worship the one true God Jesus and him only.

  11. AMP – 15 So the king did not listen to the people; for the situation was from the Lord, so that He might fulfill His word which He spoke through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

Jeroboam did not like what the King told him, even though it was from the Lord, and he went his own way, separated himself and later we find that he set up idols as shortcuts for the people to worship because if they would go to Jerusalem their hearts would return to worship the Lord.

We must be careful when we try to replace what God has instituted and put in place. We put ourselves in danger of being deceived and taking others with us, causing their blood to be on our hands.

We don’t always like what God speaks to us through our leader, but regardless of whether we like it or not, we must still be obedient. We get into trouble when we think we can do our own thing and still obtain the same results. There are many instances in the Bible where people followed their own will instead of God’s will and it caused great heartache and trouble. We can avoid a lot of heartache and pains if we will just listen to what the Lord says.

  12. LIVE – GIVE JESUS2
WHEN THE WILL OF GOD DOES NOT MAKE SENSE

8 But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him:
9 And he said unto them, What counsel give ye that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which thy father did put upon us lighter?
    13 And the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the old men’s counsel that they gave him;
14 And spake to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke: my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
15 Wherefore the king hearkened not unto the people; for the cause was from the Lord, that he might perform his saying, which the Lord spake by Ahijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

This passage is a prime example of when the wisdom of man is subject to the will and word of GOD and to prove to us all that the will of GOD will not always make sense to our simple minds.

I was ready to blast the king when I read verse 8, then when I read verse 15, uh oh this was the will of GOD…

15 Rehoboam turned a deaf ear to the people. God was behind all this, confirming the message that he had given to Jeroboam son of Nebat through Ahijah of Shiloh.
    MSG

The wise and prudent response will most often be to listen to the elders, The apostle Paul teaches us in his epistle to the younger Timothy this principal:

    1Timothy 5:1 Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren;
2 The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.

What we all can glean from this passage is that GOD is bound to and by HIS word. HIS WILL DOES NOT ALWAYS MAKE SENSE. But we can always TRUST HIS WORD.

  13. “Say to Rehoboam son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all the people of Judah and Benjamin, and to the rest of the people, ‘This is what the Lord says: Do not fight against your relatives, the Israelites. Go back home, for what has happened is my doing!’” So they obeyed the message of the Lord and went home, as the Lord had commanded.
    1 Kings 12:23‭-‬24 NLT

Even when things don’t go the way we planned, it’s okay! Remember if we are faithful to God He will always keep us. Whatever happens will always be to the glory of God!!

  14. I Kings 12:16 So when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents.

Leaders touch a heart before they ask for a hand

Connecting with people isn’t complicated, but it takes effort. Observe the truths about connection that Rehoboam, son of David, ignored:
When you reach out to your people, they will reach back toward you.

  15. King Rehoboam refuses to listen to the counsel of wisdom and chooses the counsel of foolish youth. Jeroboam Goes into sin by the way of worshiping idols and takes the rest of Israel with him. Oh Lord what has happened to your nation!!!! Today we almost see the same thing happening in the US. May God forgive us and be lenient with your Nation you in Jesus Name Amen

2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

  16. 1 Kings 12:6
Then King Rehoboam discussed the matter with the older men who had counseled his father, Solomon. “What is your advice?” he asked. “How should I answer these people?”

Take the time to listen to elders
experiences and wisdom to grow in knowledge.

    Proverbs 19:20
Get all the advice and instruction you can, so you will be wise the rest of your life.

  17. Verses 13-14 ERV “King Rehoboam did not listen to the advice from the older men, and he was rude to the people. He did what his friends told him to do and said, “My father forced you to work hard, but I will make you work much harder! My father punished you with whips, but I will punish you with whips that have sharp metal tips.” We must be wise and not listen to foolishness as Proverbs 15:1 AMP says “A soft and gentle and thoughtful answer turns away wrath, But harsh and painful and careless words stir up anger.”

  18. 7So King Joash called for Jehoiada and the other priests and asked them, “Why haven’t you repaired the Temple? Don’t use any more money for your own needs. From now on, it must all be spent on Temple repairs.”

Wow, twenty three years later and not all repairs completed. Most CFOs would have been fired after a few years. Probably no accountability going on. Whether at work, home or church keep accountability of the finances. Bills, repairs, tithing, offerings and putting food on the table have to be accounted for. For will make a way to stretch your finances and blessings will come in all forms.

  19. 1 Kings 12:6, 8, &13-14
    6) And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men, that stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived,…

    8) But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him:

    13) And the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the old men’s counsel that they gave him;
    14) And spake to them after the counsel of the young men,…

    “Old Men vs. Young Men”
Rehoboam had enough sense to seek counsel and ask for advice in his situation, but not enough sense to follow the counsel and good advice of the old men. He listened to the bad advice of the young men.
Before you follow someone’s counselling and advice, you should ask…
    1) Who is giving you the advice?
    2) Why are they giving you advice?
    3) Whether or not can you trust their advice?
Be careful who you receive counselling and advice from because it will affect you and maybe others in the end.
Over all, the best thing we can do is go to God for counselling and advice for it will always be right.

  20. 8 But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him:

You must be very watchful, careful and wise when you select people that you allow and give full permission to speak onto your life.

  21. Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee.

5 And he said unto them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed.

6 And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men, that stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, and said, How do ye advise that I may answer this people?

7 And they spake unto him, saying, If thou wilt be a servant unto this people this day, and wilt serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever.

We would be wise to listen and take guidance from the older generation.

  22. 10 And the young men that were grown up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou speak unto this people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s loins.
11 And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father hath chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

There is something to be said about experience….

  23. Convenience or the real deal?

28 Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

29 And he set the one in Bethel, and the other put he in Dan.

Is is too much to go to Jerusalem? There are plenty of churches out there that make it a lot more convenient to go to and to serve but is it worth it? I pass 5 or 6 churches on my drive to church every week. I’m not at all tempted to stop at the most convenient one because I have found the real thing. There is nothing that can replace the real thing not even convenience.

  24. “Jeroboam thought to himself, “Unless I am careful, the kingdom will return to the dynasty of David.”
    ‭‭1 Kings‬ ‭12:26‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Jeroboam received a Word from god tailor made for him about how he would be king over Israel and that the house of David would only be princes. Jeroboam forgot the words of the Lord and instead of seeking for spiritual wisdom, he panicked and acted out of fear. God does not need our help in making history. He has chosen us before the foundation of the world, He knows all. I pray we stay submitted to His Will and don’t try to ‘help’ God but rather seek His help in all things.

  25. 7 And they spake unto him, saying, If thou wilt be a servant unto this people this day, and wilt serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever.

We need to be loyal to God even when things get tough because he is always with us even when we are at our worst.

  26. 11 And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father hath chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

Be sure your counsel has come from GOD and not from the world!!! Know those that give you counsel. !!!

  27. In this chapter I think it was a friendly reminder that when God gives us a word to share we have to use it! When God places a word on our hearts we have to be the example cause it might not be for us, but for others. I pray tonight that we spread the word of God to others in need!!!

  28. “And that wasn’t the end of it…” MSG

There are times when it feels like it’s the end and it will never end. Like the word stated above in the msg version “and that wasn’t the end of it…”.

But Remember the word also states this too shall pass!!

There are things we can’t explain or some we can’t even possible begin to understand. So LIVE Jesus trusting in His Will regardless of our understanding or season of our life.

  29. 4 Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee.

Looking for less work and lighter responsibility could put you in a pickle. There are processes and things that our forefathers laid out for us for a reason.

We need to learn to “remove not the ancient landmarks” and submit and obey.

  30. 22 But the word of God came unto Shemaiah the man of God, saying,

When you build a relationship with God, he will speak to you. It may seem hard at times to hear from God because of all of the noise, but God is speaking. Sometimes we need to find a place where we can tune out all of the noise to hear the voice of God. It isn’t always easy, but it is necessary. Don’t allow the enemy to block your connection with God. Our connection with God is very important. Once we listen to the voice of God and act on what he is telling us, we can take the next step to go even further in him.

  31. 1st Kings 12

“The older counselors replied, “If you are willing to be a servant to these people today and give them a favorable answer, they will always be your loyal subjects.””
    ‭‭1 Kings‬ ‭12:7‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Sometimes servitude is the answer, we can find it in other situations in the Bible as well. It’s clear in the New Testament and I’m sure if we all thought about it we could see ourselves in this position at one time or another.

“Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.”
    ‭‭Romans‬ ‭12:20‬ ‭KJV‬‬

It’s not always the easiest solution but its the biblical solution.

  32. We 24 Thus saith the Lord, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his house; for this thing is from me. They hearkened therefore to the word of the Lord, and returned to depart, according to the word of the Lord.

  33. We 24 Thus saith the Lord, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his house; for this thing is from me. They hearkened therefore to the word of the Lord, and returned to depart, according to the word of the Lord.

  34. “And they spake unto him, saying, If thou wilt be a servant unto this people this day, and wilt serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever.”
    ‭‭1 Kings‬ ‭12:7‬ ‭KJV‬‬

If you will be a servant as a leader… It was too hard for him to put himself in the place of a servant. He couldn’t think of himself being so humble to help those under him. This caused his downfall. God calls us to serve those who are less than us just as he washed the feet of his own disciples. We have not been put On This earth to run around and tell people that we are in charge and they should listen, but rather to lead with authority and serve those who need us.

  35. Live Jesus, give Jesus is what God expects us to do. He has provided the way and alot of times its convenient. There are always leaders and followers, the church provides the leaders in most cases and the word teaches we need the church and a pastor. What more could we ask for.

  36. “But Rehoboam didn’t accept the advice the elders gave him. Instead, he asked for advice from the young men who had grown up with him and were now serving him.”
    ‭‭1 Kings‬ ‭12:8‬ ‭NIRV‬‬

Lord, Help me listen to wisdom. Touch my ears to hear your truth. And that my spirit, mind and body would always do your will.
