Amos 5

Hear ye this word which I take up against you, even a lamentation, O house of Israel.

The virgin of Israel is fallen; she shall no more rise: she is forsaken upon her land; there is none to raise her up.

For thus saith the Lord God; The city that went out by a thousand shall leave an hundred, and that which went forth by an hundred shall leave ten, to the house of Israel.

For thus saith the Lord unto the house of Israel, Seek ye me, and ye shall live:

But seek not Bethel, nor enter into Gilgal, and pass not to Beersheba: for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, and Bethel shall come to nought.

Seek the Lord, and ye shall live; lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and devour it, and there be none to quench it in Bethel.

Ye who turn judgment to wormwood, and leave off righteousness in the earth,

Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The Lord is his name:

That strengtheneth the spoiled against the strong, so that the spoiled shall come against the fortress.

10 They hate him that rebuketh in the gate, and they abhor him that speaketh uprightly.

11 Forasmuch therefore as your treading is upon the poor, and ye take from him burdens of wheat: ye have built houses of hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drink wine of them.

12 For I know your manifold transgressions and your mighty sins: they afflict the just, they take a bribe, and they turn aside the poor in the gate from their right.

13 Therefore the prudent shall keep silence in that time; for it is an evil time.

14 Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the Lord, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.

15 Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be that the Lord God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph.

16 Therefore the Lord, the God of hosts, the Lord, saith thus; Wailing shall be in all streets; and they shall say in all the highways, Alas! alas! and they shall call the husbandman to mourning, and such as are skilful of lamentation to wailing.

17 And in all vineyards shall be wailing: for I will pass through thee, saith the Lord.

18 Woe unto you that desire the day of the Lord! to what end is it for you? the day of the Lord is darkness, and not light.

19 As if a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house, and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him.

20 Shall not the day of the Lord be darkness, and not light? even very dark, and no brightness in it?

21 I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies.

22 Though ye offer me burnt offerings and your meat offerings, I will not accept them: neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat beasts.

23 Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the melody of thy viols.

24 But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream.

25 Have ye offered unto me sacrifices and offerings in the wilderness forty years, O house of Israel?

26 But ye have borne the tabernacle of your Moloch and Chiun your images, the star of your god, which ye made to yourselves.

27 Therefore will I cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus, saith the Lord, whose name is The God of hosts.

  1. 14 Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the Lord, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.

What the people of the Church claim to believe and what they truly seek must be consistent. Apparently the Lord recounts a record of a double mind in this scripture. The Lord looks at the heart, and just an outward profession of faith. We our thusly exhorted to judge ourselves because the judgment of the Lord is not something to be trifled with.

  2. 14 Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the Lord, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.

A call to righteousness and social justice goes forth “ Seek good and not evil … establish justice.” However, it is clear from the sudden change “ There shall be wailing in the streets” that the people will not listen and so are doomed to punishment.

  3. Verse 14 MSG “Seek good and not evil—and live! You talk about God, the God-of-the-Angel-Armies, being your best friend. Well, live like it, and maybe it will happen.” Wow, talk about LIVE-GIVE JESUS². John 15:14 AMP “You are my friends if you keep on doing what I command you. 2 Timothy 2:21 AMP says “Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from these things [which are dishonorable—disobedient, sinful], he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified [set apart for a special purpose and], useful to the Master, prepared for every good work.” LIVE-GIVE JESUS²

  4. To truly worship from the depth of our hearts. I want my praises and worship to be a sweet smell in the nostrils of God. Again today Lord search my heart that my sacrifice of worship will be a sweet incense to You.
    Romans 12:1 International Version
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God–this is your true and proper worship.

  5. 8. Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The Lord is his name:

When we seek God with all of our might, we don’t waste time and energy on the idols of this world.

    1 Chronicles 16:
    10. Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the Lord.

    11. Seek the Lord and his strength, seek his face continually.

    Deuteronomy 4:
    29. But if from thence thou shalt seek the Lord thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul.

  6. Amos 5: 4-6 For thus saith the Lord unto the house of Israel , Seek ye me, and ye shall live.
    (6) Seek the Lord, and ye shall live; lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and devour it, and there be none to quench it in Bethel.
Isaiah 55:6 Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near.
    Seek Jesus first!
    Love people!
    Seek good not evil!
The first three verses are memento of the fall of Israel , followed by an appeal to God to avert judgement.

  7. Amos 5:4
Now this is what the lord says to the family of Israel: “Come back to me and live!

Our Lord is very loving. No matter how far people have run from him he always welcomes us back with open arms. Thank you for loving us.

  8. I love POFW! LIVEJESUSGIVEJESUS2. Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the Lord, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.
What better chance do you have than to have God on your side? God is good, merciful, compassionate, giving, trustworthy and loving. What more do we need. And all he ask is to seek good? I know this is very simplified and basic. Start and end with God. You can’t lose!

  9. Oh you broken people. Turn to the Lord he’ll renew your strength. He’ll grant you FREEDOM.

“Come back to the Lord and live! Otherwise, he will roar through Israel like a fire, devouring you completely. Your gods in Bethel won’t be able to quench the flames.”
    ‭‭Amos‬ ‭5:6‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Come home and bring all your burdens. And lay them down before the Lord. He’ll trade them for mercy and FREEDOM.

Jesus I pray for those that are backsliden and broken. I pray that will come home and find peace in the presence of God.

    FREEDOM

  10. 21 I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies.
22 Though ye offer me burnt offerings and your meat offerings, I will not accept them: neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat beasts.
23 Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the melody of thy viols.

Long ago I was told that God was against celebrations and this was a scripture that they used to justify their belief that celebration was a sin. Taking into context this scripture is actually about how Israel sins were so great and unrepentant that God could not stand their songs or feast whenever they did have any memorials for God. This is the equivalent of someone who goes to church and worshiping on Sunday right after living a life of sin days before as if nothing ever happened.

  11. iLove the Kingdom of Jesus2
“Seek the Lord, and ye shall live; lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and devour it, and there be none to quench it in Bethel”

We just made it through 40 days of Fire. Wow, what a great outpouring of the Holy Ghost! Sunday night service was rockin’! But this fire mentioned in this verse is not the good fire, but judgement fire. Judgement fire is never fun, but is always filled with dishonor and regret. If we could just stay repented and prayed up we would not have to face this judgement

  12. The title of this chapter in “NLT” is “A call to repentance”. The people were living in sin and wickedness and because of that the world around them became a dark place.

This is state of world we live in, it may seem like a dark place to those living in sin but we know WHO the light is!

A call to repentance is ringing, let’s help lead those who answer out of darkness and into His marvelous light!

  13. 14 Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the Lord, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.

15 Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be that the Lord God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph.

It’s time to stop looking unto man for the hope of this world. For many think the answers are in the great minds of this world. Just like in the chapter, many needed to look for the good and not evil. We have the greatest good of all and that is Jesus Christ. We have to begin to turn away from the distractions of this world and love the kingdom of God so that we will not be judged with the wicked but to be entering his kingdom with the reward of eternal life.

Psalms 118:8 states it it is better trust the Lord than put confidence in man. The promise is that Jesus will not leave you nor forsake you. He will only lead through to the blessings he has for you. But trusting man will keep you from Him. Keep your eyes on Him and his favor and will can be done in your life.

  14. 14 del Good and not evil that he may live and so the lord the God of hosts shall be with you, as ye have spoken.
    ——
    Wow!!!! What a loving God.
After everything that has been done ( sinful life, acts. ..)
As much as he talks about judgment, he also shows
And tell them to repent, to seek good.
To stop and just seek him again, fall in love with him again.
To seek good and stop the evil and to hate it.
God knocks … will his people hear, open?

  15. ‭‭Amos‬ ‭5:4‬ ‭NKJV
“For thus says the LORD to the house of Israel: “Seek Me and live;”

‭It doesn’t get any simpler than that.

    ‭‭II Chronicles‬ ‭7:14‬ ‭NKJV
if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

  16. LIVE – GIVE JESUS
    SONGS WITH NO WORSHIP

23 Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the melody of thy viols.

In a religious gathering, music and singing become an important part of the itinerary. However we learn from the writings of the prophet Amos how JESUS feels about a performance.

A performance is a well rehearsed recital of musical instruments and singers and is NOISE to JESUS. A worship service is a compilation of hearts making a joyful sound unto the LORD. I prefer to be in a service of heart filled worship than an orchestrated concert of well recited sounds.

Prayer is the vehicle to Heart Filled Worship. The focus and intensity of the prayer of the musicians and singers will determine the depth of worship the ministry will lead a congregation to in praise.

JESUS said becuse your life is filled with carnality and your heart is filled with idolatry your perfected songs are NOISE to me. As a congregation we must prepare our hearts to worship GOD as we Praise HIM as ONE voice from ONE heart as our songs of praise to HIS Great Name JESUS are from heart filled efforts to honor our savior JESUS.

    iPray

  17. 14 Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the Lord, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.
15 Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be that the Lord God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph.
18 Woe unto you that desire the day of the Lord! to what end is it for you? the day of the Lord is darkness, and not light.

While giving the people a chance to repent and return to him, he also admonishes the one who wants punishment to come upon the sinners. We shouldn’t want a soul to ‘get what they deserve’ so to speak, rather we should pray that the Lord turn their life around and deliver them from their sins. There are many backsliders in our region that need this prayer to come home and serve the Lord before his return.

  18. 14 Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the Lord, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.
15 Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be that the Lord God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph.

Plain as night and day – good and evil. We are to love all things good that are of God, and we are to hate all things evil. Use the Word to filter what you allow into your mind, your heart, your family, and your home. Seek the Lord and you will always find yourself safe in His Will.

  19. 19 As if a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house, and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him.

  20. Amos 5:4-6 For thus saith the Lord unto the house of Israel, Seek ye me, and ye shall live: But seek not Beth-el, nor enter into Gilgal, and pass not to Beersheba: for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, and Bethel shall come to nought. Seek the Lord, and ye shall live; lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and devour it, and there be none to quench it in Bethel.

Seek God everyday and live! Seek the Lord in true repentance.

isaiah 55:3,6,7 Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I wll make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.
Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:
Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercyupon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

  21. vs-14
Seek good and not evil that you may live and so the Lord the God of hosts shall be with you as ye have spoken.
Good not evil every life has a basic moral direction shaped and maintained by all of our choices. Our calling is good and to let good shape the course of our life.
The only hope we have is to seek the Lord in true repentance.
In vs-15 it tells us to hate the evil and love the good.
That verse is burned in my spirt because our great Pastor always tells us that theres only one thing we can hate and thats the devil and that is evil.

  22. 14) Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the LORD, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.

GOOD NOT EVIL. Every life has a basic moral direction shaped and maintained by daily choses. Our calling is to love good and to let good shape the course of our life.

    15) Hate the evil, and the love the good…
That portion of verse 15 is burned into my spirit because our Great Pastor preaches that every so often.

  23. Amos 5:4-6 & 14-15
    4) For thus saith the LORD unto the house of Israel, Seek ye me, and ye shall live:
    5) But seek not Bethel, nor enter into Gilgal, and pass not to Beersheba: for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, and Bethel shall come to nought.
    6) Seek the LORD, and ye shall live;…

    14) Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the LORD, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.
    15) Hate the evil, and love the good,…

The most important thing we should do is SEEK GOD. SEEK and LOVE the GOOD, and Hate The Evil. For when we SEEK GOD and SEEK and LOVE the GOOD, we will Live and have LIfe and have Life More Abundantly.
We should never Seek or Turn towards things that would cause us to fall into captivity or cause our life to come to nought or be nothing.

Thank You JESUS that when I SOUGHT YOU, I FOUND YOU, and YOU Gave Me Life and Life More Abundantly!!

  24. 27 Therefore will I cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus, saith the Lord, whose name is The God of hosts.

The antidote for not being in captivity is to seek the Lord while He may be found. We spend much time pleasing the flesh, doing the necessary things to survive in life, and many times, seeking the Lord is low on the list of “to be done.” What if we all really did what His word instructs us to do? Seek first the Kingdom and all these things will be added to us…..

Seeking God is the key to true satisfaction, happiness and fullfilment. Seek Him while He may be found.

  25. 8It is the LORD who created the stars, the Pleiades and Orion. He turns darkness into morning and day into night.

How man can’t give credit to God for creating the stars and the whole universe. Yet, man uses the stars for direction from north to south, west to east. How man depend on the rising/settling of the sun/moon to count the days, weeks, months and years. Let’s give God the glory and credit he deserves.

  26. “With blinding speed and power he destroys the strong, crushing all their defenses.”
    ‭‭Amos‬ ‭5:9‬ ‭NLT‬‬
God can stop the strong and give them over to the spoiled in the fraction of a second. He speaks and it becomes. God caused a little shepherd boy to kill the giant Goliath. It is nothing for God to cause the oppressed to win over the oppressor.

  27. Amos 5

14 Seek good, not evil, that you may live. Then the Lord God Almighty will be with you, just as you say he is.

15 Hate evil, love good; maintain justice in the courts. Perhaps the Lord God Almighty will have mercy on the remnant of Joseph.

Reading Amos 5 reminds me of Brother Parkers sermon on Wednesday night. People need to realize that hell is REAL.People need to wake up and serve the one true God before it is too late. The unjust will pay with their souls.
Thank you Jesus for this day!

  28. “Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the LORD, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken. Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be that the LORD God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph.”
    ‭‭Amos‬ ‭5:14-15‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Now is the time. There is no time to be playing church ’ with Jesus. Thinking that all one must do is punch in their time card. I have to many family members that I know, the thinking they have all the time they need to play with sinful living. One must wake up. The LORD JESUS CHRIST desires all of you.

“But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”
    ‭‭John‬ ‭4:23-24‬ ‭KJV‬‬

  29. Amos Chapter 5

1 Hear ye this word which I take up against you, even a lamentation, O house of Israel.

4 For thus saith the Lord unto the house of Israel, Seek ye me, and ye shall live:

27 Therefore will I cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus, saith the Lord, whose name is The God of hosts.

Let us look at a couple of verses starting at verse 1 This is the statement from the prophet Amos through the Holy Spirit. God is addressing these words to the House of Israel which became the 10 lost tribes of Israel. They have not all been found but will be according to Revelations 7:4-8 and each tribe will have 12,000 men. In total 144,000 as representing the 12 tribes and all were sealed in their foreheads.

Hear this word. and learn from it. We are to heed verse 4 For thus saith the Lord unto the house of Israel, Seek ye me, and ye shall live: If we seek Jesus and are baptized in Jesus name for the remission of sins and receive the baptism of the Holy Ghost. We shall live. Matthew states Mat 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. We shall live and the second death will have no power in us.

27 Therefore will I cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus, saith the Lord, whose name is The God of hosts.

Who is speaking it is the Lord (Jesus) who name or title is the God of Host. I have not found this name only in this passage. It reviles who Jesus is the God of Hosts. amen.

  30. I will not accept your burnt offerings and grain offerings. I won’t even notice all your choice peace offerings. Away with your noisy hymns of praise! I will not listen to the music of your harps. Instead, I want to see a mighty flood of justice, an endless river of righteous living.
    Amos 5:22‭-‬24 NLT

Change your ways. What good is it to serve and love God from lip service. From just Sunday and sing a few songs do a little prayer, yet as soon as one is out is back to that old life. That life if idol worship. That life of sin, that life of doing your things your way without regarding the Lord and his commands.

I can really see the jealousy of God for his people. His fire for his creation. What does it need to take for us to really seek God and live? May your heart l, life and soul be surrendered to Him. And may you choose to seek him..In him there is life, and life more abundant.

  31. 4 For thus saith the Lord unto the house of Israel, Seek ye me, and ye shall live:

If we screech for him we will find Him.
We will find life safty and job.
If we seek this world we will find death and pain. What are we searching for?

  32. 14 Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the Lord, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.

We should always seek after that which is good. Evil will try to find you, but don’t let overtake you. Allow the good to lead and guide you. God is that good. His power will overcome anything evil throws your way. In his infinite power, we have a way of escape.

  33. “For thus saith the LORD unto the house of Israel, Seek ye me, and ye shall live:”
    ‭‭Amos‬ ‭5:4‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Reading this scripture I’m reminded of an instance at Bible study one day when a lady stated that she didn’t want to be labeled Pentecostal. This sums it up perfectly – Seek ye me and ye shall live. It’s not about the label but about who we serve. Stick to Jesus and His Word and you can’t go wrong. Thank you Jesus for being the Word!

  34. 14 Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the Lord, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.

We should always have our sight on God. We should not seek anything more than what he has given to us. We must speak His word as it is spoken unto others. Once He lives in us we are anointed! Being anointed is a blessing that we earn and receive. We must always have our full sight on Him. Don’t seek attention from someone that you might think is your soulmate or something cause your focus should be on God not man. I pray tonight that we realize He is all we need and nothing more!!!

  35. Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the Lord, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.

What our hearts are seeking after will determine where we are in Him. One cannot seek evil and the kingdom at the same time. For light cancels darkness.

  36. “Hate evil and love what is good; turn your courts into true halls of justice. Perhaps even yet the Lord God of Heaven’s Armies will have mercy on the remnant of his people.”
    ‭‭Amos‬ ‭5:15‬ ‭NLT‬‬

This world is full of evil, the enemy is trying to tempt us but we cannot fall for it. Yes we do make mistakes but we shouldn’t let the enemy win over our mistakes, let us go to the Lord in prayer asking seeking for forgiveness, and turning our lives to the Lord. It is better to be on the Lords side for he never fails and he always picks us up from our troubles and our hard times. Let us ask ourselves this question tonight…. what good does the enemy or evil do for you? You will not rise up with the enemy after it all you still feel fear, anxiety, and doubt. With the Lord he will change our lives for the better and we live and joyful and peaceful life with the Lord, he fills us with comfort and strength daily.

  37. ““The virgin Israel has fallen, never to rise again! She lies abandoned on the ground, with no one to help her up.””
    ‭‭Amos‬ ‭5:2‬ ‭NLT‬‬

God has left Israel because they have denied Him. People will denied Jesus. Push them to come until Jesus has come. God has put a burden on the church.

  38. “So those who are smart keep their mouths shut, for it is an evil time.”
    ‭‭Amos‬ ‭5:13‬ ‭NLT‬‬

It doesn’t take a whole lot of Intelligence for this one….you would think. We see it in other places in the Bible where it tells us even a fool knows when to keep its mouth shut. Your words are powerful and can either destroy someone or lift them up and bring them out of the valley. Choose your words carefully

  39. Noise or worship?

23 Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the melody of thy viols.

God is not looking for performances. He is not impressed by talent, he’s the one who gave it anyway.
    God seeks those who worship him. We can deistiguish between the two very eyickly;

  40. “Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the Lord, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.”
    ‭‭Amos‬ ‭5:14‬ ‭KJV‬‬

This is so simple. Stay focused on god and not the things of this world. Focus on doing the work of the lord in his kingdom. No matter what may come your way always remain focused on being on the will of him. It doesn’t matter what the world may say it matter what’s god wants you to do. Y

  41. 20 Shall not the day of the Lord be darkness, and not light? even very dark, and no brightness in it?
21 I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies.

Jesus here , tells us that he cares for the souls more than he does the “holiday “, whatever it might be…

  42. 18 What sorrow awaits you who say, “If only the day of the Lord were here!” You have no idea what you are wishing for. That day will bring darkness, not light.

24 Instead, I want to see a mighty flood of justice, an endless river of righteous living.
    Amos 5:18‭, ‬24 NLT

    https://bible.com/bible/116/amo.5.18-24.NLT

Ya know I never thought about this as deeply as now. (That’s the beauty of revelation)
I understand praying for the Lord to come back but there are still souls to be saved.

  43. 4 For thus saith the Lord unto the house of Israel, Seek ye me, and ye shall live:
5 But seek not Bethel, nor enter into Gilgal, and pass not to Beersheba: for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, and Bethel shall come to nought.
6 Seek the Lord, and ye shall live; lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and devour it, and there be none to quench it in Bethel.

It’s not that hard! Seek the Lord! Seek His guidance, seek His Will, seek His knowledge. All other roads end in captivity and naught. It’s not worth the outcome to go against the word of God! “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Matthew 6:33. “Seek the Lord, and ye shall live; . . .” It’s self explanatory!!
