Amos 7

Thus hath the Lord God shewed unto me; and, behold, he formed grasshoppers in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and, lo, it was the latter growth after the king’s mowings.

And it came to pass, that when they had made an end of eating the grass of the land, then I said, O Lord God, forgive, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small.

The Lord repented for this: It shall not be, saith the Lord.

Thus hath the Lord God shewed unto me: and, behold, the Lord God called to contend by fire, and it devoured the great deep, and did eat up a part.

Then said I, O Lord God, cease, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small.

The Lord repented for this: This also shall not be, saith the Lord God.

Thus he shewed me: and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand.

And the Lord said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more:

And the high places of Isaac shall be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.

10 Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able to bear all his words.

11 For thus Amos saith, Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of their own land.

12 Also Amaziah said unto Amos, O thou seer, go, flee thee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there:

13 But prophesy not again any more at Bethel: for it is the king’s chapel, and it is the king’s court.

14 Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet’s son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit:

15 And the Lord took me as I followed the flock, and the Lord said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel.

16 Now therefore hear thou the word of the Lord: Thou sayest, Prophesy not against Israel, and drop not thy word against the house of Isaac.

17 Therefore thus saith the Lord; Thy wife shall be an harlot in the city, and thy sons and thy daughters shall fall by the sword, and thy land shall be divided by line; and thou shalt die in a polluted land: and Israel shall surely go into captivity forth of his land.

  1. Verses 14-16 AMP “Then Amos replied to Amaziah, “I am not a prophet [by profession], nor am I a prophet’s son; I am a herdsman and a grower of sycamore figs. But the Lord took me as I followed the flock and the Lord said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to My people Israel.’ Now therefore, listen to the word of the Lord: You say, ‘You shall not prophesy against Israel nor shall you speak against the house of Isaac.’ These verses reminded me of my Daddy who always would say that he never set out to be a preacher, never had a goal to get his minister’s license or become a Pastor, etc.; but, I really never understood until now that I got older. You see Amos and my Daddy said “yes” to the call. Amos was a herdsman and a grower of sycamore figs. My Daddy was a carpenter and could fix anything. God can use any willing vessel and the true servant will always hear the Word of the Lord. Thank you Jesus and help us as we LIVE-GIVE JESUS² with our response:

    I’ll say, “Yes, Lord, yes”
To Your will and to your way
    I’ll say, “Yes, Lord, yes”
I will trust You and obey
When your Spirit speaks to me
With my whole heart I’ll agree
And my answer will be, “Yes, Lord, yes”

  2. 7 Thus he shewed me: and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand.

The Lord is merciful time and time again. However there is a time when the Lord’s mercy with not reach transgressors, and a tme of judgement will follow. It is unwise to think that we can continually sin and obtain mercy indefinately.

  3. “and the LORD took me as I followed the flock, and the LORD said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel. Now therefore hear thou the word of the LORD: Thou sayest, Prophesy not against Israel, and drop not thy word against the house of Isaac.”
    ‭‭Amos‬ ‭7:15-16‬ ‭KJV‬‬

One will never be able to compromise the truth. Either we obey truth and live or reject it and spiritually die.
Now is the time to get rid of carnal living, pride, rebellion, etc.
Jesus will have the last say over your life. So stop pkk ok playing Russian roulette with your life. Wake up today ready to hear and obey the voice of the LORD JESUS CHRIST.

“It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”

  4. Yes there is coming a time when depending on forgiveness will no longer be acceptable. It will be time to pull up our boot straps and continue on with Gods way because it’s the only way! I love POFW. Live Jesus give Jesus 2 and do it right now!

  5. 13 But prophesy not again any more at Bethel: for it is the king’s chapel, and it is the king’s court.
14 Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet’s son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit:

I can’t imagine how hardened their hearts must have been to refuse the prophecy of the Lord. Not only did they not heed the words but they told the prophet not to even speak to them what they say at the Lord. Even the city of nineveh, and all of its wickedness and on the brink of absolute destruction, still heard what God had to say and turned from the way they were doing things. God will not impose his will on other people but you still remains a just God and a righteous judge. I pray that my heart never is in a place where I refuse to hear the word of God

  6. 2 In my vision the locusts ate every green plant in sight. Then I said, “O Sovereign Lord, please forgive us or we will not survive, for Israel is so small.” 3 So the Lord relented from this plan. “I will not do it,” he said.

This is the power of intercessory prayer. How can we change the course if someone’s life simply by opening our mouths? Hallelujah!

  7. 14 Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet’s son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit:

15 And the Lord took me as I followed the flock, and the Lord said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel.

16 Now therefore hear thou the word of the Lord: Thou sayest, Prophesy not against Israel, and drop not thy word against the house of Isaac.

Amos answered that God had put him into the ministry and that he would not stop. He was no prophet in the technical sense or the son of a prophet, but he must speak the word of the Lord. So he told Amaziah of the fearful doom which would come, and that applies to all of us we must say what the word of God saying to us.

  8. 14 Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet’s son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit:
15 And the Lord took me as I followed the flock, and the Lord said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel.

It doesn’t matter what occupation you have, you can still be called by God to accomplish His will. He is looking for obedient and faithful souls.

  9. 12. Also Amaziah said unto Amos, O thou seer, go, flee thee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there:

    13. But prophesy not again any more at Beth-el: for it is the king’s chapel, and it is the king’s court.

Never ignore the Word of Truth – it is our Salvation both from life’s situations and from eternity in torment!

    2 Timothy 4:
    3. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;

    4. And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

    Hebrews 12:
    25. Be careful that you do not refuse to listen to the One who is speaking. For if the people of Israel did not escape when they refused to listen to Moses, the earthly messenger, we will certainly not escape if we reject the One who speaks to us from heaven!

    26. When God spoke from Mount Sinai his voice shook the earth, but now he makes another promise: “Once again I will shake not only the earth but the heavens also.” NLT

The prophet Amos was not the most popular of the LORDS prophets. Amos was called to speak in a time and season of correction and judgement. Amos was told that he was fired and to not prophesy any more to them, but to go back to his home and prophesy.

But the response that Amos offered should be that of every prophet.

“You didn’t hire me so you cannot fire me”.

    GNT

12 Amaziah then said to Amos, “That’s enough, prophet! Go on back to Judah and do your preaching there. Let them pay you for it. 13 Don’t prophesy here at Bethel any more. This is the king’s place of worship, the national temple.”

14 Amos answered, “I am not the kind of prophet who prophesies for pay. I am a herdsman, and I take care of fig trees. 15 But the Lord took me from my work as a shepherd and ordered me to come and prophesy to his people Israel.

When a man chooses to speak for GOD, the man does not choose what he will say. Most preachers are content to serve in a position that does make them the final decision maker or voice of GOD.

Because the LORD showed Amos a plumbline and that HE would be “Lining UP” Israel. The prophet Amos sent a warning and was ridiculed for it. But man cannot fire who GOD has Hired.

Trust the man of GOD who instructs you on behalf of the LORD.

  11. Amos 7
14-15 But Amos stood up to Amaziah: “I never set up to be a preacher, never had plans to be a preacher. I raised cattle and I pruned trees. Then God took me off the farm and said, ‘Go preach to my people Israel.’

God called Amos and he had to speak what he was instructed to speak. Ministry is so many times misunderstood by those being led. A true man or woman of God will speak whether it’s instructions or warnings what God has given them. We must truly uphold the ministry in prayer . God said preach and Amos answered the call. Why judge someone when they are doing what God called them to do. Is it too much to rest assured that he is leading us to Heaven ?
Controlling ? No ! Leading as father would do in order to protect his family. As we read this chapter we are the sincerity of the heart of the preacher here. In regards to prayer . We think of all the long lists of prayers for ourself but what if you were responsible for an entire congregation let alone a nation. The call of God comes with great responsibility. Some easy and others difficult. Communication is the key here I believe both to God and man. Amos though ridiculed did exactly what God told him to do .Sincere heart to heart without fear. It’s time we draw closer to God and others l. There is so much to be accomplished for the Kingdom. I would rather be warned than lost . God create in me a clean heart and a right spirit. I’m thankful for leadership who are not afraid to speak what “thus says God”.

  12. AMP – 10 Then Amaziah, the priest of Bethel [site of the golden calf shrine], sent word to [a]Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, “Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel; the land is unable to endure all his words. 11 For in this way Amos has said, ‘Jeroboam will die by the sword and Israel will certainly go from its land into exile.’” 12 Then Amaziah said to Amos, “Go, you seer, run for your life [from Israel] to the land of Judah [your own country] and eat bread and live as a prophet there! 13 But do not prophesy any longer at Bethel, for it is the king’s sanctuary and a royal residence.”

14 Then Amos replied to Amaziah, “I am not a prophet [by profession], nor am I a prophet’s son; I am a herdsman and a grower of sycamore figs. 15 But the Lord took me as I followed the flock and the Lord said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to My people Israel.’ 16 Now therefore, listen to the word of the Lord: You say, ‘You shall not prophesy against Israel nor shall you speak against the house of Isaac.’ 17 Therefore, thus says the Lord, ‘Your wife shall become a prostitute in the city [when the [b]Assyrians capture Samaria] and your sons and your daughters shall fall by the sword, and your land shall be divided by a measuring line; you yourself shall die in an unclean and defiled [pagan] land, and Israel shall certainly go from its land into exile.

Amaziah is playing both people against each other, and behold the Lord sent a message to him through Amos. The Lord sees and hears everything. When someone conspires against a brother or sister, the Lord sees it. God could turn that same judgement that you pronounce on another on us, so we must be careful what we say and do to our fellow christians. Just like Haman, who prepared a gallous for Mordecia or so he thought, he died by the same punishment.

We don’t have time to be playing games with our brothers and sisters in Christ, if you see something that you think is wrong with them, pray for them, don’t talk about them. If you need to talk about it, talk to Jesus. The reward for talking to Jesus is great, the reward for being a gossiper is endless death in the pit.

  13. 7:8 Amp
Amos the Lord said to me, “ Amos, what do you see?”
And I said, “ a plumb line” the Lord said,
Behold, I am setting a plumb line as a standard
    Among my people Isrrael
[ showing the defectiveness of the nation
    Requiring judgment]
I shall not spare them any longer
[ the door of mercy is shut].
    ——
The door of mercy is shut.
We can continue to pray and intercede
Only God knows what would move him to not act.
    One thing we know::
    God is a merciful God.
He is Just and CAN NOT tolerate unrighteousness.
    He is loving
    He is king
Slow to anger great in mercy
    But sometimes enough is enough.
    🙏 in the midst.

  14. 12 Also Amaziah said unto Amos, O thou seer, go, flee thee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there:
13 But prophesy not again any more at Bethel: for it is the king’s chapel, and it is the king’s court.

What a sad day for Israel when priest of the house of God doesn’t want to hear the voice of God. He above all others would know the sins that Israel had fallen into, yet he is in the same shape as the rest of the nation. Praise God for our Pastor who follows the word and the voice of God and who leads us in the right ways-God’s ways!

  15. 12 Also Amaziah said unto Amos, O thou seer, go, flee thee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there:

13 But prophesy not again any more at Bethel: for it is the king’s chapel, and it is the king’s court.

14 Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet’s son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit:

15 And the Lord took me as I followed the flock, and the Lord said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel.

The Lord chose Amos not because he was a son of a prophet or a prophet himself, but he was a worker or a herdman. He was a gatherer. There was a skill that no matter what you do, it allows us to see that God will use any vessel that is willing to obey and willing to follow God’s command. God spoke to Amos and told him to go and he went. He was not trying to justify why he could not go and do what the Lord had asked.

So many people in the church today are asked to serve and work for the kingdom, but everything else always takes precedence over the kingdom. We have to prioritize our wants and needs after the wants and needs of God. When we put God first, then our wants and needs will always be given unto us. We have to remember that we have an opportunity to serve a God that has created everything. Let us not sell ourselves to the world and give all that we have unto the service of the king of kings and lord of lords.

  16. Amos 8:17 Therefore this saith the Lord; Thy wife shall be a harlot in the city , and thy sins and thy daughters shall fall by the sword, and thy land shall be divided in a polluted land; and Israel shall surely go into captivity forth of his land.
    Visions of Destruction
The prophecies of Amos against the house of Jeroboam caused Amaziah ( a local priest of Bethel) to report Amos to the king. This priest was loyal to Jeroboam ( of the Jehu Dynasty), and he told Amos to preach to Judah instead of Israel .
Amos boldly stood his ground and stood against iniquity , for he was called of God and was not there just to please man.
I always here it not my job and I am not going to do it. But it my job to do what pleases the Lord not man.

  17. vs-1
Amos was a herdsman living in the village of Tekoa. All day long he sat on the hillsides watching the sheep keeping them from straying.
The first crop was commandeered by Jeroboam who maintained a large army. A locust plague at that time would leave the people without food until the next and cause starvation. This and a second proposed judgment were held back in answer to Amos prayer. But punishment can be delayed only so long however righteous the one who prays for sinners,

  18. “And the Lord said to me, “Amos, what do you see?” I answered, “A plumb line.” And the Lord replied, “I will test my people with this plumb line. I will no longer ignore all their sins.”
    ‭‭Amos‬ ‭7:8‬ ‭NLT‬‬

I remember pastor preaching/teaching on the plumb line and staying in plumb. We stay plumb by being plumb with the word of God. We stay in plumb by seeking ye first the Kingdom.

  19. And the Lord said to me, “Amos, what do you see?” I answered, “A plumb line.” And the Lord replied, “I will test my people with this plumb line. I will no longer ignore all their sins.
    Amos 7:8 NLT

Everyday we must check to see that we are in line with the plumb line of His Word. Daily we must surrender our own will and crucify this flesh so that we can be led by His Spirit.

  20. 17 Therefore thus saith the Lord; Thy wife shall be an harlot in the city, and thy sons and thy daughters shall fall by the sword, and thy land shall be divided by line; and thou shalt die in a polluted land: and Israel shall surely go into captivity forth of his land.

Exodus 34:14 For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:

This is the main reason God withdrew Himself from Israel to teach them to be faithful to Him. We must stay Faithful and Loyal to Jesus Christ giving ALL Honor and ALL Glory to Him alone!! It is by Him that we live and breath! We owe everything to Him!

  21. iLove the Kingdom of Jesus2
Wow, I just read this in the Message Version and it was crazy! The king told the prophet to quit preaching and the prophet then told the king that all his children would die and his wife would become a prostitute. I’m thinking it’s not very wise to come against the preacher y’all.

  22. Amos 7:14-15
    14) Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet’s son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit:
    15) And the LORD took me as I followed the flock, and the LORD said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel.

Moses could not speak clearly – he stuttered.
David was a shepherd – he took care of his father’s sheep.
Gideon was the least in all his father’s house.
Amos was a herdman and a gatherer of sycomore fruit.
It just goes to show that God can use anyone for His Kingdom purpose.

  23. “The Sovereign Lord showed me a vision. I saw him preparing to send a vast swarm of locusts over the land. This was after the king’s share had been harvested from the fields and as the main crop was coming up. In my vision the locusts ate every green plant in sight. Then I said, “O Sovereign Lord, please forgive us or we will not survive, for Israel is so small.” So the Lord relented from this plan. “I will not do it,” he said. Then the Sovereign Lord showed me another vision. I saw him preparing to punish his people with a great fire. The fire had burned up the depths of the sea and was devouring the entire land. Then I said, “O Sovereign Lord, please stop or we will not survive, for Israel is so small.” Then the Lord relented from this plan, too. “I will not do that either,” said the Sovereign Lord. Then he showed me another vision. I saw the Lord standing beside a wall that had been built using a plumb line. He was using a plumb line to see if it was still straight. And the Lord said to me, “Amos, what do you see?” I answered, “A plumb line.” And the Lord replied, “I will test my people with this plumb line. I will no longer ignore all their sins. The pagan shrines of your ancestors will be ruined, and the temples of Israel will be destroyed; I will bring the dynasty of King Jeroboam to a sudden end.””
    ‭‭Amos‬ ‭7:1-9‬ ‭NLT‬‬
The Lord has many ways of humbling a sinful nation. Whatever trouble we are under, we should be most earnest with God for the forgiveness of sin. Sin will soon make a great people small.

  24. 14 Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet’s son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit:

15 And the Lord took me as I followed the flock, and the Lord said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel.

You don’t have to be of some great status or well known family for God to use you. If you are willing, God can show you the way. For he is the way, truth and the life. So never look at someone and judge them by their outward appearance or because of their occupation. God can take someone who people see of low status and put them in a high position.

  25. Amos 7

Amos was a rancher who lived in Judah when God called him to deliver his Word across the border in Israel during the reign of Jeroboam II. The Northern Kingdom was unusually prosperous at the time, but the very wealthy oppressed the very poor. The priest Amaziah threatened Amos’ life and ordered him not to prophecy. But Amos announced God’s judgment on the priest, and finished his message of Israel’s impending doom.
Israel showed contempt for God by following the counterfeit religion and by constantly violating God’s moral law. False religion and immorality reveal how far the hearts of Gods people were removed from him.

  26. Amos 7:2-3
[2]In my vision the locusts ate every green plant in sight. Then I said, “O Sovereign Lord, please forgive us or we will not survive, for Israel is so small.”

[3]So the Lord relented from this plan. “I will not do it,” he said.

Israel was being disobedient to the Lord. The Lord loves his people and wants them to be saved from sin and be cleansed by the blood of the lamb. As Pastor preached this morning God is jealous. God has a covenant with Israel and us. He is jealous over those he is in covenant with. God gets jealous with anyone who will come in competition with his covenant.

  27. 2 And it came to pass, that when they had made an end of eating the grass of the land, then I said, O Lord God, forgive, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small.

3 The Lord repented for this: It shall not be, saith the Lord.

  28. “But the Lord called me away from my flock and told me, ‘Go and prophesy to my people in Israel.’”
    ‭‭Amos‬ ‭7:15‬ ‭NLT‬‬

A lot of us may not come from much, but none of that matter to the Lord. God sees us all, he sees the works we do for him he sees how faithful and willing we are to him and his word. God will use each of his children that are willing to sacrifice daily unto him. Even though we may not think we’re right for what God is calling us to do, just have faith in the Lord for you have a purpose and he’s calling you to it. Understand that God has our whole life planned out, I pray tonight that we keep our trust and faith in the Lord at all times. And obey whatever he has for you coming, for he knows what’s best and won’t fail.

  29. 6 The Lord repented for this: This also shall not be, saith the Lord God.

We must always try our best to be like Him! He is our shepherd and we are His sheep. We must follow as instructed in the Bible. Being like God can sometimes involve sacrifice, meaning we have to get rid of somethings. I hope that my life will forever and is reflecting off of His image. I pray tonight that we are all representing His image and not our own!!!

    Amos 7:4‭-‬6 NLT

When the Lord shows you something, by vision or revelation that is a great opportunity for prayer. God will let his prophets, and men and women of God know about certain things about outcomes or people. This is then where you must decide what to do with this information. The best thing to do is pray and intercede. We see here that what the man of God reported back to the Lord, (prayer) caused the Lord to change his mind.
Next time you have some revelation ask God for the meaning if it’s not clear and pray.

  31. “Then the Lord relented from this plan, too. “I will not do that either,” said the Sovereign Lord.”
    ‭‭Amos‬ ‭7:6‬ ‭NLT‬‬

It’s amazing what will happen when we follow the Word. Ask and ye shall receive. Amos asked God not to punish Israel by locusts and by fire and He said okay. This presents the question of what have we not asked God yet to do? Remember, His Word will not return void!

  32. The plum line

7 Thus he shewed me: and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand.

8 And the Lord said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more:

A plumb line is a tool to measure off of as you are building. It is a line square to the foundation and true any way you measure off of it. A plum line must be used to build a proper structure.

The plum line dropped down from heaven for us to measure our lives off of is the word of God. God has given us the word to figure our lives from and against. This word is for a manual and a guide. If we are measuring everything we do from this word we will build a true and square life unto God.

  33. It is interesting that here in the scriptures we are shown an example of how relationship with God can influence God or change what he is going to do. Too many times today people shy away from relationship with God. When people shy away from God then there is advocate for sparing God’s people. Relationship is the key! We have to be the ones that speak to God about the things going on around. Our relationship with God changes things around us and the world.

  34. Amos 7:8 And the Lord said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said a plumbline. Then said the Lord, Behold , I will set a plumbline in the mist of my people Israel: I will not again pass for them anymore:

We must put a plumbline in our lives to measure us by the Bible our Pastor to make sure we are not going astray from Gods righteousness because we will be judged by God almighty.

  35. “Then Amaziah sent orders to Amos: “Get out of here, you prophet! Go on back to the land of Judah, and earn your living by prophesying there! Don’t bother us with your prophecies here in Bethel. This is the king’s sanctuary and the national place of worship!””
    ‭‭Amos‬ ‭7:12-13‬ ‭NLT‬‬
