40 Days of FIRE – Day 27 – Acts Chapter 27

Day 27: Acts Ch.27. Add surviving a shipwreck to Paul’s long list of harrowing experiences as a missionary. Although Paul was a prisoner at the time, he assured the crew that they would survive the pending shipwreck if they followed God’s guidance. Pray for God’s strength to be faithful during the storms of life. Pray for the Church to Go in Faith, always believing God is in control.

Acts 27

And when it was determined that we should sail into Italy, they delivered Paul and certain other prisoners unto one named Julius, a centurion of Augustus’ band.

And entering into a ship of Adramyttium, we launched, meaning to sail by the coasts of Asia; one Aristarchus, a Macedonian of Thessalonica, being with us.

And the next day we touched at Sidon. And Julius courteously entreated Paul, and gave him liberty to go unto his friends to refresh himself.

And when we had launched from thence, we sailed under Cyprus, because the winds were contrary.

And when we had sailed over the sea of Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra, a city of Lycia.

And there the centurion found a ship of Alexandria sailing into Italy; and he put us therein.

And when we had sailed slowly many days, and scarce were come over against Cnidus, the wind not suffering us, we sailed under Crete, over against Salmone;

And, hardly passing it, came unto a place which is called The fair havens; nigh whereunto was the city of Lasea.

Now when much time was spent, and when sailing was now dangerous, because the fast was now already past, Paul admonished them,

10 And said unto them, Sirs, I perceive that this voyage will be with hurt and much damage, not only of the lading and ship, but also of our lives.

11 Nevertheless the centurion believed the master and the owner of the ship, more than those things which were spoken by Paul.

12 And because the haven was not commodious to winter in, the more part advised to depart thence also, if by any means they might attain to Phenice, and there to winter; which is an haven of Crete, and lieth toward the south west and north west.

13 And when the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, loosing thence, they sailed close by Crete.

14 But not long after there arose against it a tempestuous wind, called Euroclydon.

15 And when the ship was caught, and could not bear up into the wind, we let her drive.

16 And running under a certain island which is called Clauda, we had much work to come by the boat:

17 Which when they had taken up, they used helps, undergirding the ship; and, fearing lest they should fall into the quicksands, strake sail, and so were driven.

18 And we being exceedingly tossed with a tempest, the next day they lightened the ship;

19 And the third day we cast out with our own hands the tackling of the ship.

20 And when neither sun nor stars in many days appeared, and no small tempest lay on us, all hope that we should be saved was then taken away.

21 But after long abstinence Paul stood forth in the midst of them, and said, Sirs, ye should have hearkened unto me, and not have loosed from Crete, and to have gained this harm and loss.

22 And now I exhort you to be of good cheer: for there shall be no loss of any man’s life among you, but of the ship.

23 For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve,

24 Saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must be brought before Caesar: and, lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee.

25 Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me.

26 Howbeit we must be cast upon a certain island.

27 But when the fourteenth night was come, as we were driven up and down in Adria, about midnight the shipmen deemed that they drew near to some country;

28 And sounded, and found it twenty fathoms: and when they had gone a little further, they sounded again, and found it fifteen fathoms.

29 Then fearing lest we should have fallen upon rocks, they cast four anchors out of the stern, and wished for the day.

30 And as the shipmen were about to flee out of the ship, when they had let down the boat into the sea, under colour as though they would have cast anchors out of the foreship,

31 Paul said to the centurion and to the soldiers, Except these abide in the ship, ye cannot be saved.

32 Then the soldiers cut off the ropes of the boat, and let her fall off.

33 And while the day was coming on, Paul besought them all to take meat, saying, This day is the fourteenth day that ye have tarried and continued fasting, having taken nothing.

34 Wherefore I pray you to take some meat: for this is for your health: for there shall not an hair fall from the head of any of you.

35 And when he had thus spoken, he took bread, and gave thanks to God in presence of them all: and when he had broken it, he began to eat.

36 Then were they all of good cheer, and they also took some meat.

37 And we were in all in the ship two hundred threescore and sixteen souls.

38 And when they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship, and cast out the wheat into the sea.

39 And when it was day, they knew not the land: but they discovered a certain creek with a shore, into the which they were minded, if it were possible, to thrust in the ship.

40 And when they had taken up the anchors, they committed themselves unto the sea, and loosed the rudder bands, and hoised up the mainsail to the wind, and made toward shore.

41 And falling into a place where two seas met, they ran the ship aground; and the forepart stuck fast, and remained unmoveable, but the hinder part was broken with the violence of the waves.

42 And the soldiers’ counsel was to kill the prisoners, lest any of them should swim out, and escape.

43 But the centurion, willing to save Paul, kept them from their purpose; and commanded that they which could swim should cast themselves first into the sea, and get to land:

44 And the rest, some on boards, and some on broken pieces of the ship. And so it came to pass, that they escaped all safe to land.

  2. For many days they were tossed about helplessly without sight of sun or stars, and thus without the ability to take bearings and find out where they were. The hope of survival was finally given up. Just remember when you are at your end of the rope this.

  3. 41 And falling into a place where two seas met, they ran the ship aground; and the forepart stuck fast, and remained unmoveable, but the hinder part was broken with the violence of the waves.

When the storms of life brake us up, we have safety within the arms of Jesus. Our faith can become unmovable when we are grounded in the Word.

  4. 23. For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve,

    24. Saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must be brought before Caesar: and, lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee.

When you are in the storms of life, remember that God has not forgotten you. He knows right where you are, and what His plans are for you.

    Jeremiah 29
    11. “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope”. NLT

  5. Acts 27: 25-26 ( amp) So keep up your courage, men, for I have faith complete confidence in God that it will be exactly as it was told me.
    (26) But we shall have to be stranded on some island.
Even in the darkness, or in the midst of a storm ,the Lord is still with you.
Don’t be afraid of the storms, just listen to voice of the Lord and will guide you to the right area.
Put your faith and trust in the Lord.
I love you Jesus, you are so good at all times.

  6. But the officer in charge of the prisoners listened more to the ship’s captain and the owner than to Paul.
Acts of the Apostles 27:11 NLT

In most cases you would want to listen to The professional and experienced individual over some random bystandard, but in the cases where it’s the man of God that is heard directly from the Lord It’s better to lean on the side of faith. In these days professionals have all types of opinions on how to take care of various matters on different topics, but nothing can replace the voice of God through the people that God puts in our lives for a reason. Leaning on the side of faith genuinely carries little risk other than fear of the unknown, and submitting to the voice of God will always put that fear to rest

  7. 25 Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me.
26 Howbeit we must be cast upon a certain island.

I BELIEVE GOD, THAT IT SHALL BE EVEN AS IT WAS TOLD ME!!! HALELUJAH!!! GOD IS GOOD!!! EVEN IF IT DOESN’T MAKE SENSE!!! GOD ID STILL GOD AND HE WILL DO WHAT HE SAID HE WILL DO!!! HE IS GOD ALONE!!! THERE IS NONE LIKE HIM!!! NEVER WILL HE FAIL NOR WILL HE EVER FORSAKE US!!! HALELUJAH!!!

  8. 17 Which when they had taken up, they used helps, undergirding the ship; and, fearing lest they should fall into the quicksands, strake sail, and so were driven.

    18 And we being exceedingly tossed with a tempest, the next day they lightened the ship;

Paul had spoke what God had told him to say but they didn’t listen so when it began to crumble and things were starting to go bad, Paul stepped aside and said none of this would have happened if you would’ve just listen. Sometimes we don’t want to hear the truth although we see the truth but we don’t want to believe because we are being carnal. We need more of God and less of us everyday. Not my will but yours be done in me.

  9. 23-25‬ ‭NLT‬‬ For last night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve stood beside me, and he said, ‘Don’t be afraid, Paul, for you will surely stand trial before Caesar! What’s more, God in his goodness has granted safety to everyone sailing with you.’ So take courage! For I believe God. It will be just as he said.”

The trials of this life can seem overwhelming at times, like a bad storm. Just remember GOD is in control. Put your trust in Him. He can make a way when there seems to be no way.

  10. “Nevertheless the centurion believed the master and the owner of the ship, more than those things which were spoken by Paul.”
    ‭‭Acts‬ ‭27:11‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Good leadership is never looking for popularity! Good leadership will always lead whether people want to follow or not.

Good leadership is the only key to success. Paul has learned this throughout his ministry (calling) in his life. No matter the situation Paul has faced many lives are saved.
The enemy of our soul has a plan to kill, steal, and destroy. Jesus the liver of our soul has a plan for our lives. The only difference is He has a plan with purpose for each of us. To give to you ‘peace and not evil, to give an expected end.’
The choice of leading other people is up to you. I choose to surrender my will. And learn of GOD that I may lead others to Christ.

  11. Just as day was dawning, Paul urged everyone to eat. “You have been so worried that you haven’t touched food for two weeks,” he said. “Please eat something now for your own good. For not a hair of your heads will perish.” Then he took some bread, gave thanks to God before them all, and broke off a piece and ate it. Then everyone was encouraged and began to eat— all 276 of us who were on board.
Acts of the Apostles 27:33‭-‬37 NLT

God has placed a hope inside us to where we can speak a Word of Faith, speak a Word of Encouragement to someone. God can use us to lift the hearts and the heads of those that are fearful, worried, or doubting

  12. Historical accuracy

Studies of ocean travel on the Mediterranean have impressed scholars with the accuracy of Luke’s description of ports, weather conditions, and types of vessels. Even the critics agree these chapters must be based on the journal of actual 1st- century traveler. Of course, this is hardly a surprise to those who believe in the reliability of God’s Word.

  13. “So keep up your courage, men, for I have faith in God that it will happen just as he told me.”
    ‭‭Acts‬ ‭27:25‬ ‭NIV‬‬

In life there are going to be many trials and tribulations that we go through. There will be many storms that will try to weigh us down. Though these storms may try to weigh us down we must never loose hope of what god has promised us. We must hold on to him. Put our trust in him. He will never leave us nor forsake us. Continue ti listen to his voice!

  14. 23 For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve,

24 Saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must be brought before Caesar: and, lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee.

25 Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me.

GOD IS GOOD! ALL THE TIME!
    HALLELUJAH!
    THANK YOU JESUS!

  15. Acts of the Apostles 27:25
So take courage! For I believe God. It will be just as he said.

Take courage. God is with us

  16. We struggled along the coast with great difficulty and finally arrived at Fair Havens, near the town of Lasea. We had lost a lot of time. The weather was becoming dangerous for sea travel because it was so late in the fall, and Paul spoke to the ship’s officers about it. “Men,” he said, “I believe there is trouble ahead if we go on—shipwreck, loss of cargo, and danger to our lives as well.” But the officer in charge of the prisoners listened more to the ship’s captain and the owner than to Paul. And since Fair Havens was an exposed harbor—a poor place to spend the winter—most of the crew wanted to go on to Phoenix, farther up the coast of Crete, and spend the winter there. Phoenix was a good harbor with only a southwest and northwest exposure.”
    ‭‭Acts of the Apostles‬ ‭27:8-12‬ ‭NLT‬‬

It has been said that the trouble with good advice is that it interferes with our plans. Lord, help us to be people who searches your Word and seeks advice from those who are in touch with You. We don’t want to be people who thinks we have all the answers.

  17. The Kingdom of Jesus is GREATER
Most folk don’t want to have a meeting with the man of God before making big decisions because they are afraid he will stop them from doing what they really want to do.

This one feller I knew was going to make a major decision to not come to church as much so he would have more time with his family. He had already made up his mind and refused to hear the council of pastor. Well, I warned him not to jump ship, but he thought the south wind blowing would be an easy journey. It ended up costing him more than he thought it would, it cost him his entire family with them all being lost.

The man of God will always have special insight into major decisions. That’s God’s way of keeping us on track.

  18. 36 Then were they all of good cheer, and they also took some meat.

Gods promises never fail it may not be when we want it to be at he is an on Time God. He told Paul that the sailors would be saved if they stayed in the ship that nothing would happen to them and it all came to pass that they were saved.

  19. GREATER
    THE PAIN OF PRIDE

10 And said unto them, Sirs, I perceive that this voyage will be with hurt and much damage, not only of the lading and ship, but also of our lives.
11 Nevertheless the centurion believed the master and the owner of the ship, more than those things which were spoken by Paul.

Pride is often manifest through arrogance and self will. For men it is often in the form of I am a man and know whats best for me. For women it is often the suggestive voice of peers who make them “feel better”.

This testimony of Paul reveals to us that every self willed decision does not end up in death. But, at one point they thought it did.

20 And when neither sun nor stars in many days appeared, and no small tempest lay on us, all hope that we should be saved was then taken away.

People often ask the question, how did I end up here? Whats going on? Here is the answer:

21 But after long abstinence Paul stood forth in the midst of them, and said, Sirs, ye should have hearkened unto me, and not have loosed from Crete, and to have gained this harm and loss.

You should have listened to the man of GOD.

The BIG PROBLEM was that they did not inquire of the man of GOD, the man of GOD offered counsel, but they disregarded it.

9 Now when much time was spent, and when sailing was now dangerous, because the fast was now already past, Paul admonished them,

You will most likely survive an unwise, selfish decision to move on, but you will lose some very valueable assests and even the boat that you sailed in.

My father in the Gospel, Rev. W. S. Fielding told me of the time he regretted disobeying his Pastor in Tennessee. He had spoke with the Pastor about marrying a girl and his Pastor said, “I wouldn’t do that”. Pastor Fielding proceeded to tell how chaotic that marriage was and how ugly and painful the divorce was.

I have regarded those 4 words greatly since that 30 year old testimony. We may not always agree with the counsel of the man of GOD. But, we should consider it to be the safest and most secure route to take.

  20. 23 For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve,
24 Saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must be brought before Caesar: and, lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee.
25 Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me.

In the middle of a raging storm Paul chose to believe God and not the experienced sailors. He knew before they ever set sail that it was going to be bad for them. But God stepped in and sent an angel with instructions and Paul boldly proclaimed to them what they had to do to be saved. We must first believe every word God has spoken into our lives and situations and second we must speak boldly to others what they must do to be saved.

  21. I love POFW LIVE JESUS GIVE JESUS2 GREATER! 18 being exceedingly tossed with a tempest, the next day they lightened the ship;

19 And the third day we cast out with our own hands the tackling of the ship.

20 And when neither sun nor stars in many days appeared, and no small tempest lay on us, all hope that we should be saved was then taken away.

21 But after long abstinence Paul stood forth in the midst of them, and said, Sirs, ye should have hearkened unto me, and not have loosed from Crete,
    GOD IS IN CONTROL!

  22. “But the centurion, willing to save Paul, kept them from their purpose; and commanded that they which could swim should cast themselves first into the sea, and get to land:”
    ‭‭Acts‬ ‭27:43‬ ‭KJV‬‬

You are either going to follow God’s will or your own. As we see from this trip, three times people ignored God’s plan and three times it took someone who was onboard to allow His Will to be done to stifle the plan of man. I thank You Jesus for placing those around us that will warn us when we are trying to go our own way.

  23. 22 And now I exhort you to be of good cheer: for there shall be no loss of any man’s life among you, but of the ship.

Even in the toughest of times, and knowing that the people should have listened to him, Paul was able to encourage them that even though they were going through a test, they would all survive, if they stayed with the ship.

Who can I encourage today? Who can you encourage today? Who around you is going through what they feel is the Euroclydon of their life, and to us it may seem small, but to them it is everything, what can you do or say to encourage them today, that this too shall pass? They can make it if they stay connected to their ROCK, their FORTRESS, their EVER PRESENT HELP IN THE TIME OF TROUBLE.

All someone might need is just to know that someone else is there for them, and praying for them. Be that someone!

  24. 3 And the next day we touched at Sidon. And Julius courteously entreated Paul, and gave him liberty to go unto his friends to refresh himself.

    Fellowship is healthy
When you surround yourself with like minded people it’s like it reignites something in you and keeps the momentum of what’s right. Reach the lost
    Teach Bible studies
    Fast
    Pray
But don’t skip fellowship it refreshes just as much.

  25. 25 Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me.

I believe God. When God says it, it’s already done. When God says it’s gonna be okay, it’s gonna be okay in His time. Never doubt the word God has given you. He will always see His word come to pass!

  26. 11 Nevertheless the centurion believed the master and the owner of the ship, more than those things which were spoken by Paul.
    *****************
The centurion was believing what he could see. It didn’t look like a storm was coming, the water was still. It didn’t look like there was any trouble on the horizon. If he had only listened to the man of God. How many times do we as believers depend on what we see and not what we hear. Hearing is believing, believing in faith. There will be storms in life, we will go through trials and tribulations, that is why it is important to listen to the word of God and obey. We would have a lot less problems in our life if we lived by the word of God. He gives peace where there is unrest, He gives hope to the hopeless, He give love to the loveless, I could go on and on of what my God does, for He saved me and that is what I needed in a time of loneliness. Listening to His word would have saved me from years of brokenness. I am thankful that Jesus spoke to me and put me on the right voyage.

  27. 9 Now when much time was spent, and when sailing was now dangerous, because the fast was now already past, Paul admonished them,

10 And said unto them, Sirs, I perceive that this voyage will be with hurt and much damage, not only of the lading and ship, but also of our lives.

11 Nevertheless the centurion believed the master and the owner of the ship, more than those things which were spoken by Paul.

Paul warned the centurion about the danger of continuing the journey at that season. They should have listened to the man of God rather than the captain of the ship. We should listen to the man of God, rather than the so-called expert. The people on the ship lived through the storm and shipwreck only because Paul was on the ship and God was with him and spared him. The angel prophesied that Paul would go to Rome and Testify of Jesus and stand before Caesar. It’s safer being around a Christian than around anyone else.

  28. “So take courage! For I believe God. It will be just as he said.” ‭‭Acts of the Apostles‬ ‭27:25‬ ‭NLT‬‬

When I read this verse I had the thought what are we going to be known for what we say.

We can be known for sharing the gospel and the good news, or be known for complaining?

The choice is ours to speak life or death.

  29. Acts 27:18-23
    18) And we being exceedingly tossed with a tempest, the next day they lightened the ship.
    19) And the third day we cast out with our own hands the tackling of the ship.
    20) And when neither sun nor stars in many days appeared, and no small tempest lay on us, all hope that we should be saved was then taken away.
    21) But after long abstinence Paul stood forth in the midst of them, and said, …
    22) And now I exhort you to be of good cheer: for there shall be no loss of any man’s life among you, but of the ship.
    23) For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve,

Knowing whose we are and whom we serve – the One True Living God, we should be the ones who Stand Forth in the midst, during times of storms and chaos, and exhort, encourage, and bring a word of good cheer to those who have lost all hope. We should be the ones who bring Hope to the hopeless.

  30. Acts 27:22,23 And now I exhort you to be of good cheer: for there shall be no loss of any man’s life among you, but of the ship. For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve,

Encourage each other, God will always be with us.

    2 Corinthians 4:8,9 We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;

  31. Acts 27:22,23 And now I exhort you to be of good cheer: for there shall be no loss of any man’s life among you, but of the ship. For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve,

Encourage each other, God will always be with us.

    2 Corinthians 4:8,9 We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;

  32. 24 Saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must be brought before Caesar: and, lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee.

All I can think about is the people on the ship. They are their because of a captains decision to not listen to Paul. These people that places their lives in the safety of the captain and ship.

Yet, God made provision for them (glory) and their provision was Paul. We don’t have to worry about tomorrow God make provisions in expected ways.

  33. Proverbs
Pro 23:4  Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom

Such wisdom in these here proverbs! Folks outta catch this wisdom would save us a lot of issues in life

  34. 11 Nevertheless the centurion believed the master and the owner of the ship, more than those things which were spoken by Paul.

Who has your ear? And whose words do you hear abd take heed to? Remember as it was imparted in revelation recently, hearing is believing. So we must be wise in who we allow to have a voice and influence over our lives. Who will you listen to more? Consider that.

  35. 42 And the soldiers’ counsel was to kill the prisoners, lest any of them should swim out, and escape.

43 But the centurion, willing to save Paul, kept them from their purpose; and commanded that they which could swim should cast themselves first into the sea, and get to land:

Sometimes when others are after us, God is working through someone else. He will always have our back. We may not always understand, but through him we can be victorious.

  36. 24 Saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must be brought before Caesar: and, lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee.

Again the Lord appeared to Paul saying: Fear not, to this circumstance, because you will be before Caesar. The Lord had prepared this man of God to speak to gentiles and to kings.
Again to us, this beautiful verse: Do not be afraid!

  37. 21 After [f]they had gone a long time without food [because of seasickness and stress], Paul stood up before them and said, “Men, you should have followed my advice and should not have set sail from Crete, and brought on this damage and loss. 22 But even now I urge you to keep up your courage and be in good spirits, because there will be no loss of life among you, but only loss of the ship. 23 For this very night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve stood before me, 24 and said, ‘Stop being afraid, Paul. You must stand before Caesar; and behold, God has given you [the lives of] all those who are sailing with you.’ 25 So keep up your courage, men, for I believe God and have complete confidence in Him that it will turn out exactly as I have been told; 26 but we must run [the ship] aground on some island.”

We must Be steadfast to God’s voice and go where God is directing us to go. In every situation whether you be in a storm or not we must trust the path God is taking us on. Keep encouraged, and keep moving towards greater!

  38. 24 Saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must be brought before Caesar: and, lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee.

This is exactly what Evangelist Azzolini preached the other day. Sometimes we give credit to the enemy for something God is trying to do. Sometimes we need to be shaken and stirred up in order to make real change. Change is an uncomfortable process. Thank you Jesus for guiding my steps, even during times of “trouble”.

  39. “For this very night there stood before me an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I worship, and he said, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul; you must stand before Caesar. And behold, God has granted you all those who sail with you.’ So take heart, men, for I have faith in God that it will be exactly as I have been told.”

Lord I pray for a Faith as strong as Paul’s, that even through trials and when everyone around me is in doubt, that I would stand firm in your truth and what you have spoken. Lord, let me ears hear your truth that I may believe.

  40. 23 For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve,
24 Saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must be brought before Caesar: and, lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee.

God knows where you are and just what you are going through. In your every day life, the trials and tribulations of this world are nothing for Him. He knows your situation and is with us every step of the way! Have peace knowing that He is with you through it all!!

  41. Verses 11-12 MSG “But it was not the best harbor for staying the winter. Phoenix, a few miles further on, was more suitable. The centurion set Paul’s warning aside and let the ship captain and the shipowner talk him into trying for the next harbor.” Never let anyone talk you into anything or out of something as not everyone has your best interest at heart. Our Proverb for today says in verse 12 MSG “Give yourselves to disciplined instruction; open your ears to tested knowledge.” Heed the warnings and listen only to the Master’s GREATER voice!

  42. 31 Paul said to the centurion and to the soldiers, Except these abide in the ship, ye cannot be saved.

32 Then the soldiers cut off the ropes of the boat, and let her fall off.
