James 3

1 My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.

For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.

Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.

Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.

Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!

And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:

But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.

10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?

12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.

13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.

14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.

15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.

16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.

17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

  1. 16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.

Much of the problems we see are from prideful ambitions contending amongst each other. Focusing on the after life with Jesus will help us not desire the things of this world.

  2. 17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

    Hallelujah!
    Thank You Jesus!

  3. Verses 5-12 MSG “It only takes a spark, remember, to set off a forest fire. A careless or wrongly placed word out of your mouth can do that. By our speech we can ruin the world, turn harmony to chaos, throw mud on a reputation, send the whole world up in smoke and go up in smoke with it, smoke right from the pit of hell. This is scary: You can tame a tiger, but you can’t tame a tongue—it’s never been done. The tongue runs wild, a wanton killer. With our tongues we bless God our Father; with the same tongues we curse the very men and women he made in his image. Curses and blessings out of the same mouth! My friends, this can’t go on. A spring doesn’t gush fresh water one day and brackish the next, does it? Apple trees don’t bear strawberries, do they? Raspberry bushes don’t bear apples, do they? You’re not going to dip into a polluted mud hole and get a cup of clear, cool water, are you?” In today’s world it’s not just out of your mouth; but, also at the tip of your fingers with all of this social media, phones and texting.

Psalm 141:3 AMP “Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; Keep watch over the door of my lips [to keep me from speaking thoughtlessly].”

Proverbs 21:23 AMP “He who guards his mouth and his tongue Guards himself from troubles.”

Proverbs 13:3 AMP “The one who guards his mouth [thinking before he speaks] protects his life; The one who opens his lips wide [and chatters without thinking] comes to ruin.”

1 Peter 3:10 AMP “For, “The one who wants to enjoy life and see good days [good—whether apparent or not], Must keep his tongue free from evil and his lips from speaking guile (treachery, deceit).”

Be GREATER and pray Psalm 19:14 AMP “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable and pleasing in Your sight, O Lord, my [firm, immovable] rock and my Redeemer.”

  4. 18. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

You can’t sow the fruit of righteousness in anger, strife, or division, but in peace, which doesn’t happen on it’s own; you have to make it.

    Matthew 5:9
Blessed are the peaceMAKERS: for they shall be called the children of God.

  5. James 3: 17-18 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated full of mercy and good fruits, without partially and without hypocrisy.
    18) And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.
    I can’t live without Him!
    I can’t breath without Him!
    I can’t love without Him!
    I can’t sing without Him!
I got the Joy down my Heart.
Ps 37: 12 But the meek shall inherit the earth, and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.
Ps. 37 : 23 The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and he delighted in his way.

  6. 4 Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.

This has become one of my favorite scriptures because of the work that I do. It doesn’t take much to go into a different direction and the Lord has given us guidance through this allegorical comparison. Our actions determine the direction that we are going and it is those decisions that we make that set the path. We can either allow life itself to push us in any direction, or we can take the proverbial helm and use it to our advantage. Ultimately we are either my products of what happens to us or we create a whole new direction in spite of it. We have so much more power than we realize and once we understand that God has given us that ability, we could use it.

  7. 5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!

6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:

8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.

God help us!!! This is always a touchy subject for me. I HATE GOSSIP!!! I don’t think people realize how much damage can they do to a person if they continue to run their tongue. It is surprising how quickly can a rumor spread and how at the end they have added so much that it isn’t what was said in the first place. People had looked at me weird because sometimes I literally bite my tongue and removed myself from the conversations or I have also stopped people and said “sorry that is gossip and I don’t partake in that”. Why?? Because some people have destroyed my life with their tongues!! They have taken a rumor and distorted so badly that it just destroyed my life. Once you go through that you start looking at life differently. My father described gossip as a feather pillow. He used to tell me if you take a feather pillow and go to the roof of the tallest building in town and ripped the pillow letting all the feather fly away and then I tell you go pick up every feather; it would be impossible. Well, that is how gossip is, once it is said even if you were to apologize it is impossible to back track and tell each person that the gossip is not true and the damages would already be done. My advice is to do what I do, the bitting of the tongue and walking away it’s an option or as Pastor said grab them by the hand and take them to whom they’re talking about and tell them to say it to their face. I think Pastor’s way is the best! I just haven’t had the opportunity to do it yet. Anyway, always remember that the power of life and death it’s in your tongue so speak kindly, speak LIFE!!!!!

  8. “Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! but the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.”
    ‭‭James‬ ‭3:5, 8‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Do you remember when you received the Holy Ghost?
I do. The LORD filled me and the song of hatred, pride, bitterness was completely gone. He gave me a new song to sing, it joy, it’s peace, it’s love.
When we surrender all unto Him at an altar of repentance then He will pour out of His Spirit unto you.
So what is in you, you will speak. So one must be sure to be filled with the Holy Ghost and keep the word of THE LORD as you live it out. It’ll keep you from sin.
We all have heard the saying of ‘junk in, junk out!’ Whatever you fill your heart with is what is going to come out of you.
When you’re filling your heart that brings life( the word of GOD) you will speak life.

“My son, attend to my words; Incline thine ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes; Keep them in the midst of thine heart. For they are life unto those that find them, And health to all their flesh. Keep thy heart with all diligence; For out of it are the issues of life. Put away from thee a froward mouth, And perverse lips put far from thee.”
    ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭4:20-24‬ ‭KJV‬‬

… out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. Matt 12:34

  9. 17 but the wisdom that is from above
Is first pure, then peaceable gentle and easy to untreated
Full of mercy and good fruits without partiality and without
    Hypocrisy.
    ——-
    This is just Beautiful !
And I am guilty of not being full of this.
I am guilty of Choosing to do what my flesh has wanted instead of the opposite.
Hallelujah, thank you Lord for another
    Guide me Lord.
Guide me in your truth and teach me
That I may be willing to yield to your Spirit and choose
To do what right, what it’s pleasant to your sight.
    Hallelujah 🙌
That I may aside and hard feeling and aloud your JOY to be
    my strength
    In Jesus name.
    Amen

  10. 8-10‬ ‭NKJV‬‬ “But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.”
‭‭Only the Holy Spirit in us can control our tongue. Once we have spoken our words they cannot be retrieved. Think about your words before you speak. Make sure your words are acceptable to GOD.

  11. The Kingdom of Jesus is GREATER

WOW, this chapter is powerful! The tongue is something else. I’ve found out the real reason we’ve got teeth!!! To bite that snappin’ 😛 tongue…

  12. “Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way. We can make a large horse go wherever we want by means of a small bit in its mouth. And a small rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses to go, even though the winds are strong. In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches. But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire.”
    ‭‭James‬ ‭3:2-5‬ ‭NLT‬‬

One small word to uplift or one small word to destroy.

So much power in one muscle. I pray we all learn to choose our words wiser than before.

  13. I love POFW LIVE JESUS GIVE JESUS2 GREATER! 17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
This in one of the greatest gifts from above that could ever be given! This is personalized to me for today especially! Thank you Jesus for loving me.

  14. James 3:18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

Romans 12:18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.

Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance forever.

Proverbs 11:18 The wicked worketh at a deceitful work: but to him that soweth righteousness shall be a sure reward.

Matthew 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children(sons) of God.

    Greater righteousness and peace

  15. ‘And a small rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses to go, even though the winds are strong. In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches. But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. And among all the parts of the body, the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself. ‘

    James 3:4-6

The tongue is so powerful this is one of the biggest things i start with when teaching. If we could all learn to watch what we’d say we would see things get a lot smoother in our lives. Once something is said it literally cant be UN said Its like writing in permanent ink. The tongue is a flame of fire thats why when youre filled with the holy ghost and you let go of everything Jesus takes the tongue and when you SPEAK in tongues thats the evidence

  16. 13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.
17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

If we have wisdom from God, we are not ‘know it alls’ nor do we need to show others just how smart we are-because that isn’t God’s wisdom. Verse 17 clearly states it is gentle and peaceable. And if we lack wisdom, scripture tells us we can ask Him for it. It is both natural and a gift of the Spirit. It is to be utilized kindly, for the sake of peace.

  17. 14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.

We cannot receive blessings as long as there is strife.

  18. James 3:2,5,10
[2]Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way.
[5]In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches. But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire.
[10]And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right!

    Proverbs 18:21
The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.

    Proverbs 13:3
Those who control their tongue will have a long life; opening your mouth can ruin everything.

    Ephesians 4:29
Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.

  19. 8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

But man’s success with wild animals does not extend to the area of his own tongue. If we are honest, we will have to admit that this is in our own lives. Because of the fall, we have lost dominion over this small piece of flesh or strength to govern this little member. Only God can bring it under control.

    A.L.M.A.S.

  20. 17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

In a world of strife and confusion, we must strive to be pure, peaceable, gentle, and full of mercy. In order to welcome everyone into the house of God, we cannot step off on the wrong foot. Greet with gentle kindness, be peaceable in communication, and be merciful in differences.

  21. 1Dear brothers and sisters,a not many of you should become teachers in the church, for we who teach will be judged more strictly.

We all don’t have the passion for teaching, but we can teach the Word. Many are intimidated by teaching the Word, that questions will be ask that you can’t answer. There is no pass or fail when teaching the Word. Both the student and teacher can search the Bible for the answer. Or an answer can come from Pastor or from another disciple. Your own testimony is teaching others about what God can do.

  22. 9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.

10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

We bless God with our words. We praise people when thay do good. We praise our children when they do well. But we have choice words for people who do evil, politicians who lie or take bribes, criminals and other malcontents. If we rail at people, we defile ourselves and take on a hateful spirit. The Bible says to pray for our enemies, do good to those who despitefully use us. We should be peacemakers.

  23. ESV – 17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. 18 And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

We should strive to live peacefully with all men. It does no good to say we are Christ-like if we are contentious with everyone we come in contact with.

    Psalm 29:11
The Lord will give strength unto his people; the Lord will bless his people with peace.

    Psalm 34:14
Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.

    Psalm 37:11
But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

    Psalm 119:165
Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.

  24. GREATER
    WORDS REVEAL HYPOCRITES

9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.
10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.
11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?

Praise to the Lord JESUS and gossip is a hypocrite, testify of JESUS and telling a lie is a hypocrite. The WORD of GOD is very clear here about the importance of our words and lifestyle matching. To Glorify GOD and then gossip about his creation is not acceptable to HIM. To lift up the name JESUS then to lie to or about man that he made is not acceptable to him. The more we say about JESUS the more he expects us to continue.

    Verse 1 says:

    NLT

3 Dear brothers and sisters,[a] not many of you should become teachers in the church, for we who teach will be judged more strictly.

This will be a greater factor in my recommendations for ministry going forward, knowing that those who preach and teach will be judged more strictly for what we say. I cannot afford to lie or gossip. Lets talk about JESUS and HIS Goodness.

  25. 3 Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.

4 Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.

5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!

We have to be careful with every word we say, we have to think before we speak. Our tongue can raise someone up but it can also put someone down.

  26. 4 Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.

Who is in charge?…. who ……..or what is in charge?…..whomever and whatever is in charge is totally up to us….but there is a thing called accountability………we will give account ….

  27. 10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.
    *****************
May God bless you, love you, praying for you, sweet words come from the same mouth that speak behind your back, criticizing what you do, spreading rumors. These things should not be. We have the will to control what we say and to whom we say it. I am guilty of lashing out without thinking, I suppose we all could be, but if I take a moment and pray about it and think how I would want to be treated if it were reverse, than the thought just goes away. Thank the Lord that we can give Him our complaints and He will take care of them.
    ******************
18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.
    ******************
How quickly a dispute can be dissolved with kind words, understanding and prayer. Be kind not just in words but in action, love thy neighbor as you do yourself. If we all kept the 10 Commandments this would be a peaceful world. Thank you Jesus.

  28. The Living bible
    vs-3
If anyone can control his tongue , it proves that he has perfect control over himself in every other way. We can make a large horse turn around and go wherever we want by means of a small bit in his mouth.

Even a faith that produces works will meet difficult challenges. The first of these problems is with the tongue, which is almost uncomfortable and yet exerts a tremendous influence in everyone’s life.
James describes the power and the perversity of the tongue. It has power to inflame passions. It participates in man’s wicked acts and even sets our thoughts in there direction, so corrupting our whole lives with an evil whose source is hell itself. As a restless evil it is almost impossible to control and totally inconsistent in that the tongue that blesses some also curses others.

  29. People can tame all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and fish, but no one can tame the tongue. It is restless and evil, full of deadly poison. Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God. And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right! Does a spring of water bubble out with both fresh water and bitter water? Does a fig tree produce olives, or a grapevine produce figs? No, and you can’t draw fresh water from a salty spring.”
    ‭‭James‬ ‭3:7-12‬ ‭NLT‬‬

The fountain provides the water man needs to stay alive. Water is life-giving, and our words can give life.

    Proverbs 10:11 Voice
[11] The mouth of the righteous is a spring of life, but words spoken by the wicked cover up violent schemes.

However, if water is not controlled, it bring forth death and destruction.

    Proverbs 18:21 KJV
21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
A water fountain cannot give both pure water and polluted water at the same time. However, one of life’s hardest duties is to see that the tongue doesn’t contradict itself but speaks only the words we would wish God to hear.

  30. James 3:17 (NLT)
“But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.”

James 1:5 tells us, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”

    “Wisdom From Above”
God’s Wisdom is something we should ask for in Prayer everyday. Why? Because we need His Help and Guidance in our life Everyday.

  31. Greater
    The Tongue Controls the Destiny
    Sets Fires

v5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kinleth!
Unwise words have caused duels, feuds between families who at one time were friends., and even start wars between nations . Unwise words have also caused many to change from one church to another or even backslide.
A little fire caused by unwise words could lead to the judgment of God not only for the one with the offended spirit, but also for the guilty of using idle words.

  32. 2 For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.

As Christians we must be careful not to knowingly offend others. We must show love wherever we go. God called us to be a light and we must shine in this dark world.

  33. 8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

One of the hardest things to do is learn to tame your tongue. I have noticed that it starts with learning to tame your thoughts. What we think will come out of our mouths.

  34. James 3

10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, this ought not so to be.

God never tempts anyone. Sin comes within us. Gossip is a sin. Judging others is a sin. Love our Lord Jesus and be righteous. Do not hurt others by gossiping. Untruth has been said about me in the past and it can only do harm
Thank you Jesus for this day.

  35. 10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?

12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.

  36. “My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.”
    ‭‭James‬ ‭3:12‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Alright, alright!! Can’t be walking around acting like something that you’re actually not! Who you are inside will always find a way to show forth.

  37. 10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

Our words can make or break. Our words can tell so much and speak so much into existence. What will you decide to speak?? Blessings or curses?? It is up to you and your tongue!!

  38. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, accommodating, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial, and not hypocritical. And the fruit that consists of righteousness is planted in peace among those who make peace.
    James 3:17‭-‬18 NET

It is the fruit which gives evidence of what is inside of you ; or we.shlould say who? Nothing better than life’s situations to bring out the real fruit in us.

  39. “For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind.”
    ‭‭James‬ ‭3:16‬ ‭NLT‬‬

As leaders it is important we check our spirit daily – and sometimes even by the hour, by the minute, by the second. The scripture makes it plain and clear – when jealousy or pride takes root there will always be disorder and evil. So always keep this saying in mine – “Check ya self before you wreck ya self!!”
