Philemon 1

Paul, a prisoner of Jesus Christ, and Timothy our brother, unto Philemon our dearly beloved, and fellowlabourer,

And to our beloved Apphia, and Archippus our fellowsoldier, and to the church in thy house:

Grace to you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I thank my God, making mention of thee always in my prayers,

Hearing of thy love and faith, which thou hast toward the Lord Jesus, and toward all saints;

That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.

For we have great joy and consolation in thy love, because the bowels of the saints are refreshed by thee, brother.

Wherefore, though I might be much bold in Christ to enjoin thee that which is convenient,

Yet for love’s sake I rather beseech thee, being such an one as Paul the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ.

10 I beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds:

11 Which in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me:

12 Whom I have sent again: thou therefore receive him, that is, mine own bowels:

13 Whom I would have retained with me, that in thy stead he might have ministered unto me in the bonds of the gospel:

14 But without thy mind would I do nothing; that thy benefit should not be as it were of necessity, but willingly.

15 For perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever;

16 Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord?

17 If thou count me therefore a partner, receive him as myself.

18 If he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put that on mine account;

19 I Paul have written it with mine own hand, I will repay it: albeit I do not say to thee how thou owest unto me even thine own self besides.

20 Yea, brother, let me have joy of thee in the Lord: refresh my bowels in the Lord.

21 Having confidence in thy obedience I wrote unto thee, knowing that thou wilt also do more than I say.

22 But withal prepare me also a lodging: for I trust that through your prayers I shall be given unto you.

23 There salute thee Epaphras, my fellowprisoner in Christ Jesus;

24 Marcus, Aristarchus, Demas, Lucas, my fellowlabourers.

25 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.

  1. “For we have great joy and consolation in thy love, because the bowels of the saints are refreshed by thee, brother.”
    ‭‭Philemon‬ ‭1:7‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Though we all have different ministries, gifts and talents, it literally takes the body of Jesus Christ to nourish and take care of the harvest that we currently have and will be given of the LORD. This work does not fall into the hands of one individual.
Thank you Jesus for my brothers and sisters that we labor with in your Kingdom.

“I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase. Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour. For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.”
    ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭3:6-9‬ ‭KJV‬‬

  2. 18 If he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put that on mine account;

We cannot read this without being reminded of the enormous deft which we had contracted as sinners, and of how it was all charged to the account of the Lord Jesus at Calvary. He paid the debt in full when He died as our Substitute.

    A.L.M.A.S.

  3. 10 I beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds:

Paul was in prison, which is not the place of first choice, yet the Lord provided away for him for leading others to Christ. No matter how dire our situation is, the Lord can use it for the building up of the Church.

  4. Verses 4-8 VOICE “I am constantly thanking God for you in my prayers because I keep hearing about your love and faith toward our Lord Jesus and all those set apart for His purposes. Here’s what I’ve been praying on your behalf: Thank You, Father, for Philemon. I pray that as he goes and tells his story of faith, he would tell everyone so that they will know for certain all the good that comes to those who put their trust in the Anointed One. My brother, because you are out there encouraging and reviving the hearts of fellow saints with such love, this brings great joy and comfort to me. Although I am bold enough in the Anointed, our Liberating King, to insist you do the right thing,”. Always remember who you are in Christ and what your purpose is, never getting deterred from it…..be GREATER!

  5. 3 Grace to you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

4 I thank my God, making mention of thee always in my prayers

  6. 18. If he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put that on mine account;

God is the God of forgiveness, and Paul is following His example by taking on the wrongs committed by others. There are plenty of instances in the Bible where we can learn that we don’t have to hold grudges, but can show others the mercy that has been shown to us.

    Acts 7:60
And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

    Luke 23:34
Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

    2 Timothy 4:16
At my first answer no man stood with me, but all men forsook me: I pray God that it may not be laid to their charge.

  7. Your love has given me much joy and comfort, my brother, for your kindness has often refreshed the hearts of God’s people.
    Philemon 1:7 NLT

I love how Paul makes it new small thing his his relationship with with Philemeon And he is expressive about his appreciation and love for it it. Something that I have always appreciated about the church is it’s closest post this to one another. The stronger the body is together the more I can do

  8. Philemon 1-21-22 [ Final Greetings]
Having confidence in thy obedience I write unto thee ,knowing that thou wilt also do more than I say.
    (22) But withal prepare me also a lodging, for I trust that through your prayers I shall be given unto you.
The freedom of a slave and the treating of him as then brother, a requested by Paul, would be a true demonstration of Christian principles.
Having confidence and obedience, from going out of your way.
Go that extra mile for your pastor,or your brother or sister.
Remember what God has done for you and thank him everyday.

  9. I love POFW live Jesus give Jesus 2 Greater! 18 If he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put that on mine account;
18 If he damaged anything or owes you anything, chalk it up to my account. The Message. Don’t try to settle the score just give it to God! This is his way and when he lives in you it is done his way!

  10. Philemon 1:5
because I keep hearing about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all of God’s people.

Have faith. With God all things are possible. The preaching Sunday morning was good. Measure of faith. By faith we understand. By faith you can be made whole. Measure of faith can only be satisfied with connection with the creator.

    Matthew 17:20
“You don’t have enough faith,” Jesus told them. “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.”

  11. That is why I am boldly asking a favor of you. I could demand it in the name of Christ because it is the right thing for you to do. But because of our love, I prefer simply to ask you. Consider this as a request from me—Paul, an old man and now also a prisoner for the sake of Christ Jesus. I appeal to you to show kindness to my child, Onesimus. I became his father in the faith while here in prison. Onesimus hasn’t been of much use to you in the past, but now he is very useful to both of us.”
    ‭‭Philemon‬ ‭1:8-11‬ ‭NLT‬‬

A loving appeal is often better than an authoritative command.

  12. 18 “But if he has wronged you or owes anything, put that on my account.

Paul willingly had Onesimus’s debts charged to him just as JESUS willingly paid the price for our sins.

  13. The Kingdom of God is always GREATER

13 “Whom I would have retained with me, that in thy stead he might have ministered unto me in the bonds of the gospel”

The concept of ministering and being ministered to is complex and difficult to understand, especially in todays culture. However, the pattern has always been there and will always be there. In fact, the devil will even attempt to copy the pattern by introducing the Antichrist (military leader) and false prophet (spiritual leader).

A clear example found in scripture is Elijah and Elisha. Elijah was the spiritual leader who ministered to the masses and Elisha simply ministered (served, poured water onto the hands) of the man of God.

The book of Acts has other examples as well. The Apostles (duties were to teach, and pray) while the other leaders served the Apostles (by serving tables, setting up block parties, straightening chairs, cleaning the church, making cookie visits).

This is why at the POFW, you are going to find the primary role of our pastor teaching and preaching and casting vision (spiritual part) and you’ll find the primary role of the pastor’s helpers doing all the set up and break down (the physical part) of the vision.

Let’s all jump on board and get in where you fit in, Western Day is right around the corner. 🤠

  14. 1 Paul, a prisoner of Jesus Christ, and Timothy our brother, unto Philemon our dearly beloved, and fellowlabourer,

Can you imagine beginning a letter: Maria, prisoner of Jesus Christ … the dictionary has different tiles of prisoner, a person that committed a crime and it is punished, a person held against their will, and a person who is or feels confined or trapped by a situation or set of circumstances.. What type of surrender did Paul have to be able to call himself a prisoner of Jesus Christ. You have to have surrender your will completely, unable to do anything that you want, so in everything and I do mean EVERYTHING!!! You HAVE TO ASK JESUS CHRIST FIRST WHAT TO DO!!! That’s the real definition of a prisoner. So would you begging your letter that way????

  15. GREATER
    SUBMISSION

13 Whom I would have retained with me, that in thy stead he might have ministered unto me in the bonds of the gospel:
14 But without thy mind would I do nothing; that thy benefit should not be as it were of necessity, but willingly.

The apostle Paul, the most notable and authoritative apostle of all time, based on his eternal writings in the New Testament demonstrated submission unto Philemon.

The WORD of GOD is filled with illustrations of SUBMISSION for us to learn from, pattern our lives after and practice. Here the apostle has a young man that he obviously met in prison and taught him the New Birth doctrine and instructed in righteousness or begotten in the LORD.

10 I beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds:

Apparently it is time for the release of Onesimus from prison and Onesimus has become a servant of the LORD and Paul. Paul expresses his desire to retain Onesimus as his minister, but undertands that Onesimus already came from or belongs to another leader.

The apostle Paul chooses not to excercise his Spiritual Authority, but his Spiritual Submission. Paul obviously could have demanded that Onesimus remain with him to serve, but chose rather to submit to the desire of Philemon.

This GREAT example of SUBMISSION is not mentioned much, becuase it opposes the will and desire of the flesh. BUT. Thanks be to GOD for this powerful illustration of SUBMISSION at this level of Leadership.

JESUS teach us and help us to follow your examples of SUBMISSION in JESUS Name.

Ephesians 5:21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork
    iLive

  16. ‘This letter is from Paul, a prisoner for preaching the Good News about Christ Jesus, and from our brother Timothy. I am writing to Philemon, our beloved co-worker, and to our sister Apphia, and to our fellow soldier Archippus, and to the church that meets in your house. ‘

    Philemon 1:1-2
    Two things
    1. Paul was preaching the good news right where he was, it didnt matter what his circumstances were he preached the truth and kept that fire going.
    2. He wrote to the church that “MEETS IN YOUR HOUSE” is what he said. i noticed that and said hmm. Church starts in your house. Church starts with prayer and repentance and finding an altar, church starts wit a HOME bible study and when revival breaks out theres nothing thats gonna stop it.

so preach wherever you are and have church in your house then have church at POFW

    see yall later!

  17. The Living Bible
    vs: 12-13
I am sending him back to you, and with him comes my own heart.
I really wanted to keep him here with me while I am in these chains for preaching the good news, and would have been helping me through him.
But I didn’t want to do it without your consent. I didn’t want you to be kind because you had to but because you wanted to.

With this in mind we can understand why Paul was eager for Onesimus to be reconciled with his master, also a Christian, and to demonstrate his new faith in Christ by rendering Philemon honest service. Thank you Jesus.

  18. Philemon 1:20-21 (NLT)
    20) Yes, my brother, please do me this favor for the Lord’s sake. Give me this encouragement in Christ.
    21) I am confident as I write this letter that you will do what I ask and even more.

When asked to do a favor by Pastor or a Leader (for the Lord’s sake), sometimes the “I and ME attitude” comes out in people. “What do I get out of it? What’s in it for ME?” When all we should really do is be Obedient – do what they ask (for the Lord’s sake) and Do It GREATER.

  19. 2 And to our beloved Apphia, and Archippus our fellowsoldier, and to the church in thy house:

How many of us have “church” in our house? What is the church? A place of safety, a hollowed place, a place where we meet the presence of God. We should have those things happening in our homes for our families, but also it should be a place where others can come to visit and they feel the presence of God, their needs can meet in a prayer meeting at our houses, they can find safety, rest and peace when they enter the doors of our homes. Our children should feel like our home is a safe haven, a place where they can be restored and renewed each day in the Holy Ghost.

Let’s make our houses that sanctuary so that everyone who enters leaves with some Jesus.

  20. 5 hearing off the love and faith which thou has toward the lord jesus and toward all saints.
    —-
goodness! we are all different, the Lord made us that way, we have different characters, we have strengths and weaknesses we might be accepted by some and not by others.
and people is going talk, but they are going
i would like the good to win.
what we hear about this man( Philemon) is a good thing.
    actually is the best.
the love he had for Christ and for people( the saints).
WE CAN NOT SAY WE LOVE CHRIST AND BE UGLY
    TO PEOPLE.
    —-
    hallelujah 🙌
blessed be the name of the Lord.
    Lord, forgive me
    mold me
    be gracious unto me
that i may walk in your ways being changed
daily that i may love, and treat people the way you desire.
in Jesus name , amen( let it be so)

  21. ace to you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

4 I thank my God, making mention of thee always in my prayers,
    5 Hearing of thy love and faith, which thou hast toward the Lord Jesus, and toward all saints;
6 That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus

Always pray for Strength, Knowledge and understanding for for all God’s people.

  22. He is no longer like a slave to you. He is more than a slave, for he is a beloved brother, especially to me. Now he will mean much more to you, both as a man and as a brother in the Lord.
    Philemon 1:16 NLT

No longer a slave but a child of God. God has called us all and it’s imperative we not only forget the grace we’ve been shown, but to also share the grace of God towards others.

  23. 17 If thou count me therefore a partner, receive him as myself.
    18 If he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put that on mine account;
19 I Paul have written it with mine own hand, I will repay it: albeit I do not say to thee how thou owest unto me even thine own self besides.

Forgiveness and reconciliation are spoken here for Onesimus, who was thought to be a runaway slave of Philemons. Paul sends him back, not as the slave but as a brother in Christ. Without Jesus, we would all be slaves to a life of sin, but through his sacrifice, we are now children of God and brothers in Christ. We now reach out to bring others to be the children of God.

  24. 4 I thank my God, making mention of thee always in my prayers,
    **************
🙏I pray each night for my family, each one by name. God knows who they are and what they are going through or their needs. I thank God for them and pray for protection over them and bless them, open their eyes to the truth and repent of their sins and be saved.
We must pray for those that are in need or are lost out side of our family also. No matter what we are going through our selves ( as Paul was in prison ) still pray for others, for it is good unto the Lord. I believe that He hears our prayers and that His timing is the right time not ours. So we must continually pray and have faith that those who are lost will be saved. 🙏 Thank you Jesus .

  25. 6And I am praying that you will put into action the generosity that comes from your faith as you understand and experience all the good things we have in Christ.

Yes, put your faith into action. Let others see you pray, worship and serve in the Kingdom. Then others will be willing to follow your lead.

  26. Wow wow wow.

Talk about over coming your own pride and self will. Philemon started a church but had a slave that did him wrong. And the slave ran away. Found Paul in prison and pleaded to him. Which naturally he came persuaded of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

He became a follower and a disciple of Paul. So Paul intended to pay off all His debt. Here’s a man that did his master wrong. Maybe he stole money or tried to come onto
Philemon wife. It doesn’t say. But Paul here is “asking” nicely to Philemon about making him Debt free.

Not only making him debt free but releasing him from slavery and making him a Brother along side of him. Talk about forgives and being mature in Christ. Any carnal minded person would’ve said “no way Jose “ and turn him into the police.

But a perfect example of Forgiveness is founded in Jesus Christ. That no matter what race, creed, social standard, or economical class you come from. When acting in the salvation of Jesus Christ all is forgiven.

Maybe this was a lesson the Philemon had to learn. And God gave him a hands on experience of the necessity and the feeling of forgiveness. The correction the death of the carnal flesh. And the submission when finishing these task.

“I beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds: which in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me:”
    ‭‭Philemon‬ ‭1:10-11‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“For perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever; not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord?”
    ‭‭Philemon‬ ‭1:15-16‬ ‭KJV‬‬

  27. 16 Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord?

Paul writes a letter to a master, Philemon about a slave Onesimus, who ran away. Paul won him to the Lord and is now sending him back to his master who is also a brother in Christ. Paul wants him to treat Onesimus as a brother.

  28. Philemon 1

16 He is no longer like a slave to you. He is more than a slave, for he is a beloved brother especially to me. Now he will mean much more to you, both as a man and as a brother in the Lord.

We are all God’s children. We should teach the love of our Lord to every one. So many lost people, we need to help them find Jesus.
Thank you Jesus for this day.

  29. 11 Which in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me:

Onesimus means useful, Paul wrote that he might have been useless before but know that he found Jesus he is useful. We all have felt useless at some point in our life, but with him we should be useful today! God let us be useful in your kingdom everyday!

  30. 21 Having confidence in thy obedience I wrote unto thee, knowing that thou wilt also do more than I say.
22 But withal prepare me also a lodging: for I trust that through your prayers I shall be given unto you.

Only knowing someone is submitted, can another have confidence the someone’s obedience…

  31. Philemon 1:21 Having confidence in thy obedience I wrote unto thee, knowing that thou wilt also do more than I say.

2 Corinthians 7:16 I rejoice therefore that I have confidence in you in all things.

  32. “Your love has given me much joy and comfort, my brother, for your kindness has often refreshed the hearts of God’s people.”
    ‭‭Philemon‬ ‭1:7‬ ‭NLT‬‬

When we come into to contact with people they should feel the love that Christ gives us: we should be the refreshing that they need in their life and it should because Christ Jesus lives through us we are his people and we should carry ourselves as such because there are people out there who are waiting for someone to come show them love and what better love to show than the love is Jesus.

  33. 6 That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.

7 For we have great joy and consolation in thy love, because the bowels of the saints are refreshed by thee, brother.

8 Wherefore, though I might be much bold in Christ to enjoin thee that which is convenient,

9 Yet for love’s sake I rather beseech thee, being such an one as Paul the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ.

10 I beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds:

  34. “But I didn’t want to do anything without your consent. I wanted you to help because you were willing, not because you were forced.”
    ‭‭Philemon‬ ‭1:14‬ ‭NLT‬‬

We all have choices. I pray we never feel we are forced to do anything for the Kingdom but instead are always willing to be used of God

  35. 19 I Paul have written it with mine own hand, I will repay it: albeit I do not say to thee how thou owest unto me even thine own self besides.

The letter of Paul speak so strong about,

  36. 4 I thank my God, making mention of thee always in my prayers,

Pray for one another. There is such edification and blessing when we pray for each other.

  37. 21 Having confidence in thy obedience I wrote unto thee, knowing that thou wilt also do more than I say.

22 But withal prepare me also a lodging: for I trust that through your prayers I shall be given unto you.

Just having a little amount of faith gets you further than you realize the more our eyes begin to open

  38. As you share the faith you have in common with others, I pray that you may come to have a complete knowledge of every blessing we have in Christ.
    Philemon 1:6 GW

    https://bible.com/bible/70/phm.1.6.GW

Something happens when we get around like minded individuals. Our faith expands, our knowledge expands. There’s power and healing in fellowship. There’s so many references to the coming together of brethren in old testament and new testament. Here’s to more fellowship in Jesus name!

  39. 20 Yea, brother, let me have joy of thee in the Lord: refresh my bowels in the Lord.

Our joy comes from only one place and that’s God.

    He’s our comforter.
    He’s our strength.
    He’s our joy.
