Hosea 1

1 The word of the Lord that came unto Hosea, the son of Beeri, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel.

2 The beginning of the word of the Lord by Hosea. And theLord said to Hosea, Go, take unto thee a wife of whoredoms and children of whoredoms: for the land hath committed great whoredom, departing from the Lord.

3 So he went and took Gomer the daughter of Diblaim; which conceived, and bare him a son.

4 And the Lord said unto him, Call his name Jezreel; for yet a little while, and I will avenge the blood of Jezreel upon the house of Jehu, and will cause to cease the kingdom of the house of Israel.

5 And it shall come to pass at that day, that I will break the bow of Israel, in the valley of Jezreel.

6 And she conceived again, and bare a daughter. And God said unto him, Call her name Loruhamah: for I will no more have mercy upon the house of Israel; but I will utterly take them away.

7 But I will have mercy upon the house of Judah, and will save them by the Lord their God, and will not save them by bow, nor by sword, nor by battle, by horses, nor by horsemen.

8 Now when she had weaned Loruhamah, she conceived, and bare a son.

9 Then said God, Call his name Loammi: for ye are not my people, and I will not be your God.

10 Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people, there it shall be said unto them, Ye are the sons of the living God.

11 Then shall the children of Judah and the children of Israel be gathered together, and appoint themselves one head, and they shall come up out of the land: for great shall be the day of Jezreel.

  1. Rejoice we are in the Lambs book of life. Be glad that we aren’t excluded like the kinsman/people of Laommi. “It is written”, vs. 9, for ye are not my people, and I will not be your God. Talk about having absolutely no hope. “SAD”.

But, thank God for our adoption…….

  2. 10 Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people, there it shall be said unto them, Ye are the sons of the living God.

NUMBERS AS THE SAND OF THE SEA

God may be angry at disobedience, but will always bless obedience. There will always be a people of God, the question is will we be in that number. At the same time he was saying to some, you are not my people!! He was saying to another group, you are the sons of the living God.
God will multiply his people if we obey his law. What is we are told?
    1. Teach
    2. Baptize
    3. Teach and keep Teaching.
We must be ever learning. When we stop learning we will stop growing!!

  3. Hosea shows great faith and obedience by laying aside his own plans and reputation to obey what must have seemed like an extreme command from God. He shows us a great example of “Seek ye first…”

  4. The field and the farmers

Gomer means completion, perfection. Hosea took an unfaithful wife whose name meant perfection.

They had a son whose name was Jezreel which meant “God sows.” This was because God was going to cause to cease the kingdom of Israel.

Then because God would have no mercy Hosea named his daughter Loruhamah meaning no mercy.

Finally a son was born whose name was Loammi for they were not his people.

The story of the prophet Hosea, whose name means salvation, would seem to go another way entirely. He married perfection. Yet there was something about her that remained unfaithful, and uncommitted.

The name Jezreel is the most intriguing because it shows that even as we make choices, and plants seeds so does The Lord.

We are choosing right, or wrong, and God is causing things to grow with. In this case it was “no mercy” and “not my people.”

This tells me the right choices cause God to plant good things that will grow in our life along with the good we are sowing.

What is God planting as he looks at my life?

  5. From a whore to a blessed woman.

2 The beginning of the word of the Lord by Hosea. And theLord said to Hosea, Go, take unto thee a wife of whoredoms and children of whoredoms: for the land hath committed great whoredom, departing from the Lord.

It had to be hard specially on those days to take a whore as a wife. Here he is a man of God and taking a wife out of the whoredoms, but Hosea is obedient to God and does as he says. God want to show His people what they have been doing as they fall into idolatry. For He consider His people, His church, His bride, without wrinkle or spot, and here they are entertaining other gods. On the other hand, this woman is taken from a world of dishonored and put in a place of honor as the bride, wife, and mother of the children of a man of God. She is blessed with 2 boys and 1 girl, that bare the name with the meanings of warning to Israel.
4 And the Lord said unto him, Call his name Jezreel; for yet a little while, and I will avenge the blood of Jezreel upon the house of Jehu, and will cause to cease the kingdom of the house of Israel.
6 And she conceived again, and bare a daughter. And God said unto him, Call her name Loruhamah: for I will no more have mercy upon the house of Israel; but I will utterly take them away.
9 Then said God, Call his name Loammi: for ye are not my people, and I will not be your God.

Now the question is this, who will He consider you to be part of?? The house of Israel, no longer His people, or the house of Judah which will remain His? CALL ME JUDAH!!!!!! FOR I WILL PRAISE HIM NO MATTER WHAT.

  6. Verses 9-11 AMP “And the Lord said, Call his name Lo-Ammi [Not-my-people], for you are not My people and I am not your God. Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured or numbered; and instead of it being said to them, You are not My people, it shall be said to them, Sons of the Living God! Then shall the children of Judah and the children of Israel be gathered together and appoint themselves one head, and they shall go up out of the land, for great shall be the day of Jezreel [for the spiritually reborn Israel, a divine offspring, the people whom the Lord has blessed.]”

Verses 9-10 MSG “Name him Nobody. You’ve become nobodies to me, and I, God, am a nobody to you. “But down the road the population of Israel is going to explode past counting, like sand on the ocean beaches. In the very place where they were once named Nobody, they will be named God’s Somebody.”

  7. A FIRST WORD FROM GOD

2 The beginning of the word of the Lord by Hosea. And the Lord said to Hosea, Go, take unto thee a wife of whoredoms and children of whoredoms: for the land hath committed great whoredom, departing from the Lord.

As I pondered Hosea chapter 1 today, I placed myself in the shoes of Hosea and found a tremendous respect for the FAITH that he displayed to obey the WORD of GOD and pondered how I would respond if the FIRST word from the LORD was for me to go find someone unfaithful, uncommitted and unreliable to commit my life and future to.

Most of us would be challenged to obey this WORD from LORD. This potentially dangerous relationship teaches ua 2 important lessons.

    1. GOD was jealous over a people he had given so much to and done so much for, that GOD desired to illustrate to humanity HIS willingness to take a people unto HIMSELF that has worshiped idols and given themselves to sinful activities and love us.

    2. That when GOD speaks to a man, we may not understand or make sense of the instructions, however we should OBEY. GOD may be using us to illustrate and impact others through our test and trials.

I pray that our courage would be strong and our FAITH be full to OBEY the word of the LORD.

    iRepent
    iPray
    iPraise
    iWork
    iGive
    iReap

  8. Relationship
2 The beginning of the word of the Lord by Hosea. And theLord said to Hosea, Go, take unto thee a wife of whoredoms and children of whoredoms: for the land hath committed great whoredom, departing from the Lord.

Hoseas instructions would be hard to follow. He was asked to find a wife that has her eyes on everyone else but him.

    • The children of Israel was found doing the same thing. Gods eyes were on them and for them yet theirs were on everything but Him.

  9. Hosea 1:2,3. In all probability Gomer was morally pure prior to her marriage to Hosea, but subsequently became discontented and went into harlotry, from which Hosea by his love reclaimed her.

    Israel’s Two Evils
Jeremiah 2:13 For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.

  10. Hosea was given what most if us would consider a tough task. We may not always understand what God is doing, but he always has a plan. Never take what God is saying lightly, but take it with a sincere heart because when we obey his commandment, there is a blessing in store for us as well.

  11. When the Lord first began speaking to Israel through Hosea, he said to him, “Go and marry a prostitute, so that some of her children will be conceived in prostitution. This will illustrate how Israel has acted like a prostitute by turning against the Lord and worshiping other gods.” So Hosea married Gomer, the daughter of Diblaim, and she became pregnant and gave Hosea a son. (Hosea 1:2, 3 NLT)

It must have taken great faith to submit to this command. Complete submission is doing something you don’t agree with or want to do.

  12. iLove to eat the Word

2 The beginning of the word of the Lord by Hosea. And theLord said to Hosea, Go, take unto thee a wife of whoredoms and children of whoredoms: for the land hath committed great whoredom, departing from the Lord.

I can only imagine what Hosea’s kinfolk were saying along with all the religious folk. All the gossip and all the crazy looks. He basically goes out and marries a prostitute. For the next several years he has several children with her.

To Hosea, doing the will of God was more important than what anyone thought or said. I’m sure in the future this woman will also break Hosea’s heart and add insult to injury. The important thing however, is that no matter how painful life can be, always do the will of God and the retirement plan will always pay off.

  13. 7 But I will have mercy upon the house of Judah, and will save them by the Lord their God, and will not save them by bow, nor by sword, nor by battle, by horses, nor by horsemen.

Praise protects us. We sing and talk about how our weapons of warfare are not physical weapons but our worship. Do we really understand that? It’s not our words or actions protecting us but rather opening the door in our lives to give God liberty to fight our battles for us and protect us. His mercy shall be on Judah, the ones who lift Him up and worship Him! I want to stay in His mercy 🙂

  14. There comes a time when our own plan and will has to be set aside to follow what God has in store.
Lord give me the strength to put aside my plan to follow yours.

  15. 10 Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people, there it shall be said unto them, Ye are the sons of the living God.

After God disciplines he offers his hand of reconciliation. Praise God for his mercy & grace. Backsliders are welcome home as this passage shows. Pray for the backsliders of this region and welcome them in- no matter what state they are in when they walk through our doors.

  16. We should never doubt or question God. Sometimes He will set a command before us that is hard for us to grasp an understanding of but we must always trust Him because God will never lead us wrong.

  17. 2 The beginning of the word of the Lord by Hosea. And theLord said to Hosea, Go, take unto thee a wife of whoredoms and children of whoredoms: for the land hath committed great whoredom, departing from the Lord.

I’m gonna use you as an example…
Would one be ready to approach such a task? Those that want to be used of God know that your life will be an example, of submission, obedience, sacrifice, love, to name a few. As I began to think about this chapter it is well evident that your heart will be involved in through the toughest tests but we know that obedience is highly blessed. We may not understand at first but we must know that the Lord has great plans…

  18. Wow
Although it was hard but he did everything he can to help his wife when she did wrong
Thank you Jesus for everything letting us be able to breath again and wake up and thank you for the blessing and wonderful things you givin us I love you Jesus and thank you

  19. Why is hard for us to listen to the words that God speaks? Is it flesh,or is it because in our world today we know not to trust anyone. This is where the problem lies. We are told at a young age that people lie all the time. And though that is true in some cases. A good name is to be chosen…. We must realize that God cannot lie, so therefore His Word and words are true. This is why we can trust all things that God speaks to us.

  20. The curse of the half-hearted

4 And the Lord said unto him, Call his name Jezreel; for yet a little while, and I will avenge the blood of Jezreel upon the house of Jehu, and will cause to cease the kingdom of the house of Israel.

Jezreel is the place where Jehu had all the servants of Ba’al executed. Even thought Jehu obeyed God’s commandment of destroying Ba’al he did not turn from idolatry. 2 Kings 10:28 In I Kings 13:34 it would appear that although Jehu destroyed Ba’al he didn’t dispel the idols. The goddess Asherah was a consort of Ba’al. Asherah was usually associated with trees and poles, but the most important site for her worship was at high places. I Kings 13:33 shows Jeroboam setting priests in the high places. In Jehu’s work, the Bible doesn’t mention destorying Asherah. Therefore, we Jehu followed the ways of Jeroboam it seems that he only delt with half of the problem.

The curse of the half hearted is that they do what they are instructed to do with a motive that is not one of loving worship. It is more of a motive of self. Although Jehu carried out some of the work of God, his heart was not right. So, we see God carrying out judgement on Jehu-a worker of iniquity.

David prayed Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! Psalms 139:23. It is important that God does the searching of our hearts because only He can know them. Jer 17:9

Those of the half hearted do things for the service of self. Immanuel Kant taught that the actions we do are neither evil or good alone, but are rather evil or good based only on the motive of that action. I agree with Kant that and action is only moral when it is done with an intent or motive that is moral. Mark 12:41-44 shows a root of this. The widow gives everything, while the wealthy gave out of wealth. Her mentality in giving was different than the wealthy. It was more than just a relative amount of wealth giving, it was demonstration of faith.

We must be vigilant in discerning the motives of others (and more importantly) ourselves. Let us not fall astray and follow the error of Jehu by simply serving God out of a heart of duty rather than a heart of love.

  21. Vs.7, “But I will have mercy upon the house of Judah (Praise), and will save them by the LORD their God, and will not save them by bow, nor by sword, nor by battle, by horses, nor by horsemen.” (KJV)

Vs.7, “Judah’s (Praise) another story. I’ll continue having mercy on them. I’ll save them. It will be their God who saves them. Not their armaments and armies, not their horsepower and manpower.” (MSG)

No matter what we are going through in life, as long as we give God the glory and Praise due unto him, he will have mercy upon us and fight our battles.

I thought of the scripture found in Ps.24:8, “Who is this King of Glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle.”

I then thought about the song we sing in church.
Who is the King of Glory?
    The LORD strong and might.
Who is the King of Glory?
    The LORD mighty in battle

    He is the glory.
    He is the lifter.
He is the glory and the lifter of my head.

  22. 7 But I will have mercy upon the house of Judah, and will save them by the LORD their God, and will not save them by bow, nor by sword, nor by battle, by horses, nor by horsemen.

Have a house of praise! No matter the trials or victories always praise.

Psalm 150:6 Let everything that breathes sing praises to the Lord!Praise the Lord!

  23. God had given instruction to Hosea where to find a wive and what to name their 3 children. The last was called Nobody, because God had become a nobody to them. Then the following:

8-9 After Gomer had weaned No-Mercy, she got pregnant yet again and had a son. God said:

“Name him Nobody. You’ve become nobodies to me,
and I, God, am a nobody to you.
10-11 “But down the road the population of Israel is going to explode past counting, like sand on the ocean beaches. In the very place where they were once named Nobody, they will be named God’s Somebody. Everybody in Judah and everybody in Israel will be assembled as one people. They’ll choose a single leader. There’ll be no stopping them—a great day in Jezreel!”

The transformation promised here of going from nobodies to God’s Somebody is a promise for everyone. Once we become God’s there is no stopping those who are blood bought, spirit filled!

  24. 11 Then shall the children of Judah and the children of Israel be gathered together, and appoint themselves one head, and they shall come up out of the land: for great shall be the day of Jezreel.

Here the bible predicts how the people of Israel will come together as one nation as it once was under the rule of David.

Many centuries later, the Jews went back to their homeland at the end of the World War two, their land went from nothing to once again being the apple of God’s eyes. Their Hebrew that once was dead came back and became the language of the people as predicted in the bible.

And then in 1963, Jerusalem once again became it’s capital city as predicted. What can we take from this? God can take any barren situation and bring it back to life. No matter how hopeless it may seem in your situation, God has made a promise to his chosen and we now fall under that promise thanks to our Lord Jesus, that if we give into his work, he will bless abundantly and bountifully.

  25. Hosea 1:10 Yet the number of the Children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea.which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass.that in the place where it was said unto them. You are not My People.there it shall be said unto them. You are the sons of the Living God.

  26. 10 Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people, there it shall be said unto them, Ye are the sons of the living God.

God keeps his promises… Hundreds of years before the writing of this scripture God made a promise to Abraham that his seed would be “As the sands of the sea” well here again we see God referring back to this prophetic word. There is such a blessing to be the fruit of Abraham because we are joint heirs with him. Whatever God promised him is promised to us. All the blessings, all the promises are ours. THE BLESSINGS OF ABRAHAM ARE MINE!!!

  27. What is in a name?

4 And the Lord said unto him, Call his name Jezreel; for yet a little while, and I will avenge the blood of Jezreel upon the house of Jehu, and will cause to cease the kingdom of the house of Israel.
6 And she conceived again, and bare a daughter. And God said unto him, Call her name Loruhamah: for I will no more have mercy upon the house of Israel; but I will utterly take them away.
9 Then said God, Call his name Loammi: for ye are not my people, and I will not be your God.

All if these children hands very unique name that played into their personality. My name means victory of the people and I am called that many times a day!

I am thankful for that wonderful name that is above every name. The name of our precious savior –JESUS!

  28. Children Of God

10 Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people, there it shall be said unto them, Ye are the sons of the living God.

    1 John 3:1-3
1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God:therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. 2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. 3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

    1 Chronicles 16:13-17
13 O ye seed of Israel his servant, ye children of Jacob, his chosen ones. 14 He is the Lord our God; his judgments are in all the earth. 15 Be ye mindful always of his covenant; the word which he commanded to a thousand generations; 16 Even of the covenant which he made with Abraham, and of his oath unto Isaac; 17 And hath confirmed the same to Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant

When the people of Israel where just a people, they were the children of Israel, Isaac, and Jacob. They were the children of a covenant; a people by promise. But when we become children of God, it is not about the covenant so much as it is about God: our identity is not found in the covenant but in our Heavenly Father. Israel showed time and time again the inability of humanity to be made perfect by the Law, and so showed again and again their violation of the covenant to keep the Law in righteous living. But when the new covenant came, Christ took on our failings and paid the price so that we might receive eternal life, not by our works but by His righteousness. The shift again, from us to Him…

    Hebrews 9:11-15
11 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; 12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. 13 For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: 14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? 15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

    Galatians 2:16-21
16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. 17 But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid. 18 For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor. 19 For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God. 20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. 21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.

It is the shift, from living under the covenant to living out the covenant by Christ alive in us. It’s not just about being a people, it’s about being the children of God. True life calls for the one true God, and it’s not enough to be just His, we must have Him and Him ahold of us.

  29. 10 Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people, there it shall be said unto them, Ye are the sons of the living God.

11 Then shall the children of Judah and the children of Israel be gathered together, and appoint themselves one head, and they shall come up out of the land: for great shall be the day of Jezreel.

Lord thank you for all your doing and help you have giving to us LORD!!!
because of your help and the word none of this couldn’t have been possible neither could we have come this far without you Jesus because were powerless without you and thirst for your word everyday hunger for your movement everyday Lord we excalt your name and give you praise for the beautiful changes and things you done in our life Lord and thank you sincerely…….

  30. It’s a scary place when God takes his hands off of you. When the Pastor and your trusted friends can’t tell you your in trouble,You are in a mess.

  31. This chapter illustrates process. There was a process that had to take place. Although there is a process, endurance will be worth it; “Then shall the children of Judah and the children of Israel be gathered together, and appoint themselves one head, and they shall come up out of the land: for great shall be the day of Jezreel”. What a mighty God

  32. 10. Yet the number of the children of Is’-ra-el shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people, there it shall be said unto them, Ye are the sons of the living God. I Thank you oh Lord, for choosing me. And Loving me. I give you Glory!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  33. We should see God as our husband.
Now God is a Jealous God.
when we go after things of this world we are making them our lovers.
God will show you all the wrong in this earth and show you that in his arms, under his covering is where the true glory is, where we all can find rest.
He will keep you from the lovers if you seek Him, He will show you all that you had gotten from the world and have you destroy it, then he will give you the things that you need and more.
He will keep you if you keep Him.

No longer is He just “my Lord” for the relationship is so much more than that now. now He is “my Husband”.

  34. God’s Workings and Ways

Hosea obeys God’s instruction to marry Gomer, a prostitute. Although difficult -even repulsive- Hosea does not hesitate. Just as the Lord reveals himself to Job through his suffering and gains a more intimate relationship with hi, the Lord uses Hosea’s marriage to Gomer to mirror the people of Israel’s unfaithful relationship with him. And Hosea, like Job, remains faithful to God throughout his suffering. He honors his marital commitment, just as the Lord honors his commitment to Israel despite her persitent disobedience. What cause for hope this if for today! God is always ready to forgive and restore us when we repent- regardless of our sin or the events in our lives that challenge our faith.
