Judges 2

1 And an angel of the Lord came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you.

2 And ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall throw down their altars: but ye have not obeyed my voice: why have ye done this?

3 Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you.

4 And it came to pass, when the angel of the Lord spake these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept.

5 And they called the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there unto the Lord.

6 And when Joshua had let the people go, the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to possess the land.

7 And the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the Lord, that he did for Israel.

8 And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died, being an hundred and ten years old.

9 And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnathheres, in the mount of Ephraim, on the north side of the hill Gaash.

10 And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the Lord, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.

11 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and served Baalim:

12 And they forsook the Lord God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and provoked the Lord to anger.

13 And they forsook the Lord, and served Baal and Ashtaroth.

14 And the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them, and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies.

15 Whithersoever they went out, the hand of the Lord was against them for evil, as the Lord had said, and as the Lord had sworn unto them: and they were greatly distressed.

16 Nevertheless the Lord raised up judges, which delivered them out of the hand of those that spoiled them.

17 And yet they would not hearken unto their judges, but they went a whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves unto them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the Lord; but they did not so.

18 And when the Lord raised them up judges, then the Lord was with the judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented the Lord because of their groanings by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them.

19 And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their stubborn way.

20 And the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel; and he said, Because that this people hath transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened unto my voice;

21 I also will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations which Joshua left when he died:

22 That through them I may prove Israel, whether they will keep the way of the Lord to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it, or not.

23 Therefore the Lord left those nations, without driving them out hastily; neither delivered he them into the hand of Joshua.

  1. 17 And yet they would not hearken unto their judges, but they went a whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves unto them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the Lord; but they did not so.

It goes to show you our God is a very zealous, jealous God. There is no room for another god. When He speaks to you, you should listen and obey the way you should for your parents. Obey and honor thy Father and Mother. Otherwise you shall be punished. Like it says in verse 3 Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you.
I don’t want to have thorns or be a thorn in someones side and I don’t wnt to get punished or don’t want to be snared for choosing another god.

  2. 16 Nevertheless the Lord raised up judges, which delivered them out of the hand of those that spoiled them.

17 And yet they would not hearken unto their judges, but they went a whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves unto them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the Lord; but they did not so.

  3. 7 And the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the Lord, that he did for Israel.

It is important to teach our children the ways of the Lord and to teach our children the ways of the Lord and to testify of his goodness and all he has done.

Also, we cannot follow Jesus just because someone else is, but because it is in our heart to follow him.

  4. 7 And the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the Lord, that he did for Israel.

It is important to teach our children diligently all the things of God and to testify of his goodness and what he has done.

Also, we cannot follow Jesus because of someone else, but it must be in our heart.

  5. Israel Serves God
Judges 2:6,7 And when Joshua had let the people go, the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to possess the land.
And the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the Lord, that he did for Israel.

Joshua 22:6 So Joshua blessed them, and sent them away: and they went unto their tents.

Joshua 24:31 And Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that overlord Joshua, and which had known all the works of the Lord, that he had done for Israel.

    POFW will serve God!

  6. “Eventually that entire generation died and was buried. Then another generation grew up that didn’t know anything of GOD or the work he had done for Israel.”
    ‭‭Judges‬ ‭2:10‬ ‭MSG‬‬

Parents, do our children know our God? Do they know of His mighty work? How do you suppose this older generation raised their children without telling how and what God did and continues to do? Could it be life got in the way? Could it be there were so many things to do in the new land that their homes were no longer filled with the testimonies of how good God is but rather stories of the deeds of the day… What lessons can we learn from this simple scritpure?

  7. 11 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and served Baalim:

12 And they forsook the Lord God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and provoked the Lord to anger.

13 And they forsook the Lord, and served Baal and Ashtaroth.

How soon we turn our backs on The one God that has helped us, delivered us, provides for us! Because they figured that people are gone that held them accountable! God dont need no help holding us accountable! Theres always gonna be a Moses, Aaron, Joshua! Elders, just because we dont see the leader doesnt mean there isnt one! Makes me thankful our Man of God isnt going anywhere!

  8. iLove to Grow in the Word

For your part, you were not to make any covenants with the people living in this land; instead, you were to destroy their altars. But you disobeyed my command. Why did you do this? 3So now I declare that I will no longer drive out the people living in your land. They will be thorns in your sides, and their gods will be a constant temptation to you.”

This scripture is so true. Even though we live in the 21 century, this verse is very powerful for all us today. Whatever temptation that is coming against us, we must completely destroy that temptation from our lives. If we feed it a little, then God won’t even drive it out from our lives. God doesnt play games with sins

  9. FAITHFUL GOD

The LORD our GOD has pledged and promised to be FAITHFUL. His charge to his people is that we will be FAITHFUL to him. Our attitude and actions toward GOD are what he uses to guage our love for and trust in him.

We are not supposed to make league or commitments to this world and its system. GOD has called us to follow HIM. GOD knows our lives, our disobedience as well as our obedience. We will ALL be judged by the power of HIS WORDS. Therefore we are wise to consider his voice and his ways.

GOD chose the rebellion of the people to test the people. This principle indicates that we are going to take the same test over and over until we pass that test.

For instance: If an individual is easily offended; GOD will allow offenses to come to see if we can overcome to pride of life and demanding our way.

Psalm 119:165 Great peace have they that love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.

When we walk in obedience we also walk in peace.

    • I am so grateful that God has led us to this church and great man of God. Pastor you have been a blessing to us and a great leader of the house of God. Every word that is spoken has been of God and I thank you for your insight. This has been the most that I have understood the word and been involved in church…….Thank you and have a blessed week.

  10. 19. But when the judge died, then the people would fall away from their faithfulness, and the next generation behaved even worse than their ancestors, pursuing and serving other gods, and bowing down before them. They would not change their bad habits but clung to them stubbornly. Voice

We don’t have a generation to waste, this could be the last one before Jesus returns! We must do all we can to make sure they realize that time is running out and we cannot stray from the Truth or go chasing false gods.

  11. 2 And ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall throw down their altars: but ye have not obeyed my voice: why have ye done this?

3 Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you.

Obedience is the key to our blessings!

  12. “And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and served Baalim:”
    ‭‭Judges‬ ‭2:11‬ ‭KJV‬‬

-The children of Isreal began to do evil in Gods eyes. Imagine a pastor that gave so much time and time again to one of their disciples. But in the end that deciple decided to just keep on falling.

    – even tho God saw that for the next generation of Isreal they would go back and forth from doing evil. God always had their best interest in mind.

  13. Judges 2:10 After that whole generation had been gathered to their ancestors another generation grew up who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel. Then the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord and serve the Baals. They forsook the Lord the God of their ancestors who had brought them out of Egypt. They followed and worship various gods of the people around them. They aroused the Lord’s anger because they forsook him and serve Baal and the Ashtoreths in his anger against Israel the Lord gave them into the hands of raiders who plundered them. He sold them into the hands of their enemies all around whom they were no longer able to resist. Whenever Israel went out to fight the hand of the Lord was against them to defeat them just as he had sworn to them. They were in great distress. Then the Lord raised up judges who saved them out of the hands of these raiders yet they would not listen to their judges but prostituted themselves to other gods and worship them. They quickly turn from the ways of their ancestors who had been obedient to the Lord’s commands. Whenever the Lord raised up a judge for them he was with the judge and save them out of the hands of their enemies as long as the judge live for the Lord relent because of their groaning under those who oppressed and afflicted them. But when the judges died the people return to ways even more corrupt than those of their ancestors following other gods and serving and worshipping them. They refused to give up evil practices and stubborn ways.

  14. 7 And the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the Lord, that he did for Israel.

8 And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died, being an hundred and ten years old.
Joshuas faithfulness to God and his willingness to obey all that Moses commanded him set him and the whole nation up for blessing. While we may not think much about it our faithfulness and commitment to God now will greatly affect our future and those of our family later.

  15. 12 And they forsook the Lord God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and provoked the Lord to anger.

This is so true to how I was. I followed other gods and it wasn’t good. Now that I know the truth, there is no way I would ever turn from the Lord again. The children of Israel were carried out of Egypt to follow the Lord. As soon as the apostle Joshua and the elders had left; they turned their face from God and were then delivered into the hands of the enemy. Sold into slavery and who knows what else. I am put to the test daily and there are times where I fell that I have fallen short, but God knows what He’s doing. My test of faith has been a challenge and I know that. The Lord didn’t raise me up to turn from Him. I will listen and obey the commandments of God. There is no god before my God and there will be none after Him. God is so awesome……..Have a blessed day……Amen!!!

  16. 14 And the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them, and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies.

The Lord gave them to their enemies. Wow. Do not make God angry. Before the Lord comes back it will be worst than the days of Sodom and Gamora. Get ready church. We are always a day closer to his return.

  17. 10 And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the Lord, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.

11 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and served Baalim:

The danger that our children face when we worry more about putting food on the table and supplying for there needs, doing what we think is the right thing but forsake to train them up in the ways of the Lord.

To this day I remember all the testimonies that my father told me growing up. How many times the Lord had delivered our family and him many many times. All those testimonies I carry into this day, they have been one of the reasons why I have keep my faith. I knew that Gods power without knowing his word because of the testimonies that have been forever etched in my heart.

We need this to be a priority, see it’s important to read your bible, but if God has done so many things in this book, we should have an equal witness in our lives of what God has done. It has to be a personal God, he’s alive because I am a witness not just because his word says so!

  18. 19 And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their stubborn way

It’s incredible to think of how graceful and faithful God really is

  19. 1 The angel of the Lord went up from Gilgal to Bokim and said to the Israelites, “I brought you out of Egypt into this land that I swore to give your ancestors, and I said I would never break my covenant with you.
2 For your part, you were not to make any covenants with the people living in this land; instead, you were to destroy their altars. But you disobeyed my command. Why did you do this?
3 So now I declare that I will no longer drive out the people living in your land. They will be thorns in your sides, and their gods will be a constant temptation to you.” (NLT)

God is a faithful God as long as we are faithful and obedient to His word and commands. Like any relationship, our relationship with God is not one sided; we can’t expect God to give, give, give while we’re off doing our own thing. Keep God first and be faithful to Him, He will surely show His faithfulness to you.

  20. We are Overcomers by the Blood of the Lamb

There are some obstacles that we ourselves will have to overcome. There are enemies that we ourselves have to destroy. By His Blood and by Obedience of His word WE WILL OVERCOME!!!!!!

  21. 15 Whithersoever they went out, the hand of the Lord was against them for evil, as the Lord had said, and as the Lord had sworn unto them: and they were greatly distressed.

  22. 18 And when the Lord raised them up judges, then the Lord was with the judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented the Lord because of their groanings by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them.

19 And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their stubborn way.

  23. 18 And when the Lord raised them up judges, then the Lord was with the judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented the Lord because of their groanings by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them.

  24. Judges 2:10 (NLT)
“And in time death overtook all that generation; and another generation came after them, having no knowledge of the LORD or of the things which he had done for Israel.”

No knowledge – No facts – No information – No experience – No understanding – No awareness – No recognition – No appreciation of the LORD or of the things which He had done for Israel.

To me this shows that someone didn’t Teach and Testify to them about the LORD and of all the things He had done for them. As a Sunday school teacher, there’s nothing I love doing more then Teaching and Testifying to the children about JESUS and all the things He has done and what He can do for them.

GO Teach and Testify about JESUS !!

  25. 18 And when the Lord raised them up judges, then the Lord was with the judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented the Lord because of their groanings by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them.

19 And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their stubborn way.

  26. 10 Eventually that entire generation died and was buried. Then another generation grew up that didn’t know anything of God or the work he had done for Israel.

Another generation is rising up and we need to make sure they rise up to know God. We need to be examples for the next generation so they can rise up knowing God and passing it on to the next generation.

  27. 22 I did this to test Israel—to see whether or not they would follow the ways of the LORD as their ancestors did.” 23 That is why the LORD left those nations in place. He did not quickly drive them out or allow Joshua to conquer them all.

Bottom line is we all have to make a choice whether to serve God or not.

  28. Judges 2:10 (NLT)
    Israel Disobeys the Lord
10 After that generation died, another generation grew up who did not acknowledge the Lord or remember the mighty things he had done for Israel.

It would be easy to blame this all on the new generation. They after all did not acknowledge the Lord, or remember the mighty things of God. They turned to serve Baal and other idols. God soon sent judgment because of this. Oppressors came.

How easy to blame the new generation but honestly they aren’t completely at fault here.
    Why didn’t they acknowledge God?
Why didn’t they remember what God did?

The answer lies solely on the actions of their parents and grandparents. The generation before them dropped the ball.
It’s imperative we acknowledge God and remember the great things he has done but don’t stop there.

Teach our children to acknowledge God and tell them of the good things the Lord did so they can remember.

  29. I am thankful for a heritage that has been passed down through generation to generation. Why the children did not keep the commandments that were taught was because of the choices they made. The parents and grandparents had set up memorials along the way, they had taught their children Hear Oh Isreal the Lord our God is one Lord. They were taught just as I was taught, I had to make the choice to keep it alive , I had to find my own relationship with God. Our children will be taught and the word says it will not depart from them but it comes to what will we choose. God or idols?

  30. 11 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and served Baalim:

12 And they forsook the Lord God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and provoked the Lord to anger.
What the isrealites did was very wrong and unpleasing to God. We are guilty of doing the same thing to God even after he had fought our battles, blessed us, and performed miricales after miracles, even we do things that hurt God. God help me to always to be pleasing in God sight.

  31. “Therefore the Lord left those nations, without driving them out hastily; neither delivered he them into the hand of Joshua.” The word of God (Jesus) identified why they would experience the trouble they did. One is wise to do as God (Judge) wants over self, before taking a chance as the children of Israel did. Dear God, forgive us (me), and our Nation of any and all things that are contrary to your word, in Jesus name. God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  32. 10 And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the Lord, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.

11 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and served Baalim:

It is of great importance to teach our younger generations to live for God. To show them the ways of the Lord with the Word of God. Teach it to them day and night. This should be a priority for a home with children to produce more servants of the Lord. The bible clearly states for a reason to train up a child in the way that he should go… Its for a reason. We cannoy miss and drop the ball. They are the next generation of christians that will take this doctrine of truth.

  33. “And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the Lord, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.” They did not know because they were never taught. They did not care as everything had been done for them. Things are unfortunately seldom, if ever missed, until they are no more. God help us see the importance of teaching our children, in Jesus name.

  34. v 2 Everyone that is interested in serving the LORD should know: that GOD requires srparationy from the world and sin to be called HIS child.

  35. 3. Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you. 4. And it came to pass, when the angel of the LORD spake these words unto all the children of Is’-ra-el, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept. 5. And they called the name of that place Bo’-chim: and they sacrificed there unto the LORD. angel of the LORD HALLELUJAH !!!!

  36. Verses 20-22 MSG “And God’s anger blazed against Israel. He said, “Because these people have thrown out my covenant that I commanded their parents and haven’t listened to me, I’m not driving out one more person from the nations that Joshua left behind when he died. I’ll use them to test Israel and see whether they stay on God’s road and walk down it as their parents did.” What now? Will you follow God and stay on the path/direction that he has for you? Psalm 32:8 NLT says “The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.”

  37. 10 And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the Lord, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.

Whatever you do now…will be passed on unto your children!!!! I am striving to teach my children about Jesus…doing everything to him!! Children are such an inspiration to other children and adults because they have stronger confidence in what they believe and will not be like adults in doubting……I rejoice when children pray, recieve the HG, praise, worship, and dance to the Lord because they are building their faith. I was not raised as a Pentecostal but I am teaching my children that when they are scared..PRAY!! when they receive something…THANK JESUS…when they eat…PRAY FOR THE FOOD….bedtime…SAY VERSES AND READ THE BIBLE…when they are in pain…PRAY!!! everything is revolved about Jesus!!!! When they feel a pain in their body….I rejoice because they will ask me to pray for them. As parents we are building that foundation that they will never forget or forsake!!! Hallelujah!!! because my children are going to love and live for the Lord!!! Don’t show your children to be ashamed of the gospel..inspire, motivate, and teach!!!

  38. 6 And when Joshua had let the people go, the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to possess the land.

7 And the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the Lord, that he did for Israel.

It’s important to build a relationship with the Lord, not the leader so when God takes the leader out of your life, you still have stability and are able to continue in the path you started.

  39. “So the LORD burned with anger against Israel. He said, “Because these people have violated my covenant, which I made with their ancestors, and have ignored my commands, I will no longer drive out the nations that Joshua left unconquered when he died. I did this to test Israel—to see whether or not they would follow the ways of the LORD as their ancestors did.” That is why the LORD left those nations in place. He did not quickly drive them out or allow Joshua to conquer them all.”
    ‭‭Judges‬ ‭2:20-23‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Lord, through our testing times continue to lead and guide us. That we would hear every word and even if he whispered that is towards us. Lord you are everlasting. Your reign will never end. Be the center of our lives and the center of our church.
