Philemon

Paul, a prisoner of Jesus Christ, and Timothy our brother, unto Philemon our dearly beloved, and fellowlabourer,

And to our beloved Apphia, and Archippus our fellowsoldier, and to the church in thy house:

Grace to you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I thank my God, making mention of thee always in my prayers,

Hearing of thy love and faith, which thou hast toward the Lord Jesus, and toward all saints;

That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.

For we have great joy and consolation in thy love, because the bowels of the saints are refreshed by thee, brother.

Wherefore, though I might be much bold in Christ to enjoin thee that which is convenient,

Yet for love’s sake I rather beseech thee, being such an one as Paul the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ.

10 I beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds:

11 Which in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me:

12 Whom I have sent again: thou therefore receive him, that is, mine own bowels:

13 Whom I would have retained with me, that in thy stead he might have ministered unto me in the bonds of the gospel:

14 But without thy mind would I do nothing; that thy benefit should not be as it were of necessity, but willingly.

15 For perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever;

16 Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord?

17 If thou count me therefore a partner, receive him as myself.

18 If he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put that on mine account;

19 I Paul have written it with mine own hand, I will repay it: albeit I do not say to thee how thou owest unto me even thine own self besides.

20 Yea, brother, let me have joy of thee in the Lord: refresh my bowels in the Lord.

21 Having confidence in thy obedience I wrote unto thee, knowing that thou wilt also do more than I say.

22 But withal prepare me also a lodging: for I trust that through your prayers I shall be given unto you.

23 There salute thee Epaphras, my fellowprisoner in Christ Jesus;

24 Marcus, Aristarchus, Demas, Lucas, my fellowlabourers.

25 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.

  1. Verses 4-7 MSG “Every time your name comes up in my prayers, I say, “Oh, thank you, God!” I keep hearing of the love and faith you have for the Master Jesus, which brims over to other believers. And I keep praying that this faith we hold in common keeps showing up in the good things we do, and that people recognize Christ in all of it. Friend, you have no idea how good your love makes me feel, doubly so when I see your hospitality to fellow believers.” Like the song “Let Them See You” says:

    Let them see you, In me
    Let them hear you, When I speak
    Let them feel you, When I sing
    Let them see you
    Just let them see you in me…

    Lord, let our love and faith brim over to others as we keep a high expectancy as Paul did in verses 21-22 MSG “I know you well enough to know you will. You’ll probably go far beyond what I’ve written. And by the way, get a room ready for me. Because of your prayers, I fully expect to be your guest again.” Let us not be content with just getting by; but push beyond expectations…..First The Kingdom.

    7 For we have great joy and consolation in thy love, because the bowels of the saints are refreshed by thee, brother.

    Message
    4-7 Every time your name comes up in my prayers, I say, “Oh, thank you, God!” I keep hearing of the love and faith you have for the Master Jesus, which brims over to other believers. And I keep praying that this faith we hold in common keeps showing up in the good things we do,

    Refreshment in the presence of fellow believers.
    There are some people who just bring with them brings refreshments. They portray the love of Christ . There speech their actions their attitudes. They are just a breathe of fresh air. Paul says here that the people regonzed Christ. Not in just a portion of their life but in all they were doing. Their actions go beyound the surface. Paul uses the word bowels of the saints are refreshed. It’s a deep refreshing it has meaning. This is a true genuine love and strength you do not find everywhere. I believe this is what has been happening amongst us we are going deeper and drawing closer to God. As we go deeper into the presence of God we too can become this refreshing breath that is going to leave an impression upon those we touch shoulders with. As a kid I recall a masked man by the name of Zoro. At the end of the story their was always a question. “Who was that masked man”?
    Carnal illustration but we who have been endowed and endorsed by the power of the Holy Ghost can have this effect that we reflect God’s glory and love that Christ t will cause others to be drawn and strengthenied. There are names of friends that when mentioned a smile comes over my face because I know when I get with them I feel the genuine love and refreshing of the Hods last ve eithin then. Thank you God for those who refresh our lives.

    Proverbs 27:17, “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens the face his neigh- bor,” is almost universally seen as positive. Some view this maxim as an example of “tough love,” others as a rewording of a verse earlier in this passage, “Faithful are the wounds of a friend” (27:6).

    Strength comes from strength.

  3. 22. One more thing-please prepare a guest room for me, for I am hoping that God will answer your prayers and let me return to you soon. NLT

    Make room for your miracle –
    When we truly have faith that what we are praying for will happen, we will begin to prepare in advance for it to take place.

  4. There salute thee Epaphras, my fellowprisoner in Christ Jesus; Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, Luke, my fellowlabourers.
    Philemon 1:23‭-‬24 KJV

    Laboring together in His KINGDOM is always best! It is a testimony of the church body. We know that no matter what comes our way that there is strength in numbers.
    You will chase and destroy your enemies, even if there are only 5 of you and 100 of them, or only 100 of you and 10,000 of them.
    Leviticus 26:7‭-‬8 CEV

  5. We all need to come to Christ with our hearts open. This is the only way to get to the Kingdom. Hearts wide open; minds set on God the Father. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Kingdom minded that is what we need to be. Saving souls and seeking God in all that we do. Have I done that; no. Why not; I still have a work in me and the battle rages on in my mind. It is a daily struggle for me to stay in God’s word and stand steadfast for the Kingdom. I thank you Jesus for guiding me and lifting me up daily to fight the battle of worldly temptations.

    It seems to me that Paul even though he was miles away could have been right there, He always encouraged the believers, it was like he knew exactly what to say, even his rebukes seemed encouraging, how effective is our faith the other aspects in our life are out of line, what is faith if we are mad all the time, what is faith if we are negative? is it really Faith? Can we really beleive that God is a healer and deliverer of all thing and he is God, but we are constantly in a state of anguish, or hurt! It is refreshing to see a new saint, get the Holy Ghost, and when they get to crying and jumping and that Joy, that is awesome to witness it’s like witnessing BURTH! THANK YOU JESUS FOR LIFE!

  7. 5 Hearing of thy love and faith, which thou hast toward the Lord Jesus, and toward all saints;
    6 That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.

    If anything like the church stronger it is the relationship with God and with each other that is going to create bonds that cannot be broken. The closer we are together as a church to more effectually become whenever aspire to do something.

  8. 4I always thank my God when I pray for you, Philemon, 5because I keep hearing about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all of God’s people. 6And I am praying that you will put into action the generosity that comes from your faith as you understand and experience all the good things we have in Christ. 7Your love has given me much joy and comfort, my brother, for your kindness has often refreshed the hearts of God’s people. (NLT)

    The one thing that we must do as ministers of the gospel, and that is become transparent. We should not become something that we are not. We have to become like Jesus, and be loving, passionate about souls that we are trying to reach. It is never about what we can gain, but about what the Kingdom Of God can gain. As we labor, we will reap the blessings that God bestows upon us.

    We need to live as Jesus lived. We need to love as Jesus loved. Even when sometimes we are rejected, used, and abused, we still should always show love and generosity to others. We have to live our testimony to others because of what Jesus has done for us. Living for God should never be a chore, it should be a privilege and a honor that he chose a sinner like us to give grace and mercy even when we didn’t deserve it.

    I love the Kingdom!

  9. 1:22 But withal prepare me also a lodging: for I trust that through your prayers I shall be given unto you..
    Yes, we need to learn how to pray, but we also need to be confident that through our prayers things can happen…
    I have faith
    I shall not be moved
    I will continue with the race….
    Through Jesus Christ! Our Lord..

  10. Philemon 1: 21-22 [ Amp] I write to you [ perfectly] confident of your obedient compliance, knowing that you will do even more than I ask. [22] At the same time prepare a quest room [ in expectation of extending your hospitally] to me, for I am hoping through your prayers to be granted ( the gracious privilege of coming) to you. Greeting to you from Epaphras, my fellow prisoner here in [ the cause of] Christ Jesus the Messiah. And Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, and Luke, my fellow workers. Laboring together is this best testimony to others. Lord I pray that my testimony will draw others to you. I bless you in the name of Jesus.

  11. Perhaps the reason he was separated from you for a little while was that you might have him back forever— no longer as a slave, but better than a slave, as a dear brother. He is very dear to me but even dearer to you, both as a fellow man and as a brother in the Lord.
    Philemon 1:15‭-‬16 NIV

    There’s no telling what Onesimus went through while he was away. A lot of us go through a similar process when we make a mistake messed up our lives and end up on rock bottom. We hit that pivotal point in our lives there’s no way out. That’s where Jesus show up the best sometimes. Onesimus had to step away so that he could get in a place so uncomfortable he had to shed the world and his old ways and be brought into The Marvelous Light Of God

  12. [And I pray] that the participation in and sharing of your faith may produce and promote full recognition and appreciation and understanding and precise knowledge of every good [thing] that is ours in [our identification with] Christ Jesus [and unto His glory]. For I have derived great joy and comfort and encouragement from your love, because the hearts of the saints [who are your fellow Christians] have been cheered and refreshed through you, [my] brother. Therefore, though I have abundant boldness in Christ to charge you to do what is fitting and required and your duty to do, Yet for love’s sake I prefer to appeal to you just for what I am–I, Paul, an ambassador [of Christ Jesus] and an old man and now a prisoner for His sake also–
    Philemon 1:6‭-‬9 AMPC

    Let Love speak for you. What does your love in Christ Jesus show and say about you? Just as some ones deeds can cause people to talk about a person I believe that you love actions can be stronger and more noticeable that the One who Is and gives love will ensure they are noticed. Is your Love in God and others as strong that it speaks for yourself? Every little act and deed does not go unnoticed for it will work for your testimony and gain you the respect of others. In this case of the very apostle Paul. Is the men and women of God can see, you can be sure that God takes notice. There is no need to seek out the recognition or to boast on your works, He sees and knows and will probably make it known. It’s your faithfulness in the little things and the things that no one sees where God really takes notice. Let you love actions speak for you and He will make mention of you in your behalf.

    Proverbs 27:2 New King James Version (NKJV)

    “Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth;
    A stranger, and not your own lips.”

  13. 4 I thank my God, making mention of thee always in my prayers,

    It is good to know that others are praying for you. The knowledge of that gives you strength in times of need.

  14. Grace to you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

    4 I thank my God, making mention of thee always in my prayers,

    5 Hearing of thy love and faith, which thou hast toward the Lord Jesus, and toward all saints;

    6 That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.

  15. I love Jesus Christ and our grace to you peace and love from god our father and our love Jesus Christ I thank god for mentioning me in his prayers hearing thy love and faith with love Jesus Christ and toward all saints

  16. 14 But I didn’t want to do anything without your consent. I wanted you to help because you were willing, not because you were forced. (NLT)

    Serve and work for The Kingdom because you want to, do it because you love God and pleasing Him. God is a gentleman who doesn’t force Himself on anyone. We have to want Him and love Him. What’s more is that we have to continue to serve in that love with a right attitude and spirit. God is love so we must show that love and be that love.

  17. 15 For perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever;

    Sometimes we get into a slump and we depart from things for a season but when we get ourselves right and come back we should be welcomed with open arms. Sometimes we are quick to disregard those who’ve fallen away or slowly start taking themselves out of ministry or outreach or anything church related and just assume they are backsliding. Instead we should be reaching out and readyy to throw out that lifeline that could save them from turning away. It’s like the prodigal son. He turned away and went out into the world and when he decided to come back he was welcomed with open arms and embraced. Always be watchful and take notice if someone is slipping because you could be the intervention they need.

  18. beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds:

    11 Which in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me:

    12 Whom I have sent again: thou therefore receive him, that is, mine own bowels:

    13 Whom I would have retained with me, that in thy stead he might have ministered unto me in the bonds of the gospel:

    Gods transformation in us is awesome. Onesimus was tutored by Paul while he was in prison and in turn ministers to Paul. However prior to being made a disciple by Paul, Onesimus wasn’t much use to anyone. Now the Philemon church is encouraged to allow Onesimus to minister to them.

    We must give people a chance once change has come to them. Let’s not prejudge them because of their past but allow the forgiveness for their ways that they have received from God be the same forgiveness we extend.

    There is a mighty harvest of backsliders coming home to POFW. We must treat them with love and compassion and let them start with a clean slate regardless of how they left. This is true Christian love.

  19. Philemon 1
    10 I beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds:

    Onesimeus
    runaway slave, whom the apostle Paul received to the faith of Christ while in prison, regarding him as a son of whom he had become father, as he himself wrote to Philemon, Onesimus’s master”

    Paul never gave up he never gave in to the perils of life. One would think that after all he had gone through he would just sit down in his prison cell and
    think God was finished. Yet his letters written during this confinement have become the source of encouragement for multitudes for centuries. Not only letters but again he still reaches out and births another spiritual child . Too many times we have allowed the prison cell of our minds to keep us distracted from the purpose of its intentions. Paul daily renewed his mind in Christ this releasing any thought that would darken his spirit and the work that God still had for him throughout the course of his life. We can create our own prisons within the mind but when we come before the presence of God He breaks lose every chain that has had us bond. He can take away the darkness and fill it with light and life. Paul could not and would not allow his surroundings to determine his actions. He took full control and continued with the call of a relationship with Jesus Christ and thus sharing His love with others. Onesimus birthed through a peril in life.
    Nothing but the blood of Jesus…….

  20. FIRST THE KINGDOM
    KINGDOM LEADERSHIP

    14 But without thy mind would I do nothing; that thy benefit should not be as it were of necessity, but willingly.
    15 For perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever;
    16 Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord?

    Kingdom Leadership is founded and built on the platform of servanthood not harsh demands. As a Leader at The POFW it is my last resort to make demands, but give opportunity for us to serve one another. Paul having Spiritual authority offers this expression of compassion. Rather than demand or mandate the situation he prays that it will be a mutual and consensual agreement.

    Verse 14 in the NLT brings us clearer understanding in the spirit of the request.

    14 But I didn’t want to do anything without your consent. I wanted you to help because you were willing, not because you were forced. NLT

    It is the desire of every good Leader to Lead people with this principal. Leading people that are willing to support and follow the VISION not from demand, but from consent and agreement. This promotes UNITY which is an absolute for Apostolic Revival.

    As we Seek FIRST The Kingdom of GOD, let it be from a heart of service and not of demand, laboring together for HIS Kingdom.

  21. Putting our love into ACTION.

    “I always thank my God when I pray for you, Philemon, because I keep hearing about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all of God’s people. And I am praying that you will put into action the generosity that comes from your faith as you understand and experience all the good things we have in Christ. Your love has given me much joy and comfort, my brother, for your kindness has often refreshed the hearts of God’s people.”
    ‭‭Philemon‬ ‭1:4-7‬ ‭NLT‬‬

    There are many way we can put our love into ACTION.

    Sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ.
    There is no truer love than sharing Jesus and the good news of salvation to those who do not know Him.

    Extending Kindness.
    Doing small acts of kindness everyday may not seem like much, but we never know who it’s touching. And when we show kindness to others, we are showing the Jesus in us.

    Encouraging others.
    Everyone is going through something. And when we allow God to use us to encourage someone, we may just be changing their perspective on their situation.

    Putting our love into action is simple. We must show Jesus!

  22. “I appeal to you to show kindness to my child, Onesimus. I became his father in the faith while here in prison.”
    ‭‭Philemon‬ ‭1:10‬ ‭NLT‬‬

    As a church we need to take care of our babies in the faith as Paul requested to Philemon. We as the church have the responsibility to show them kindness and love them as a mother loves their new borns.

    Mathew 18:10
    10 “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.

    We don’t know what plans God has for them , some of them will be prophets, Pastors or teachers, missionaries…. just as your own children.

    God also has chosen them (Our church babies) no matter where they come from they also have heard the calling of the Lord in their lives.

    Jeremiah 1:5
    “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”

    Let us pray for them and for one another for unity and for our new born babies in Christ.

  23. 6 I pray that your partnership with us in the faith may be effective in deepening your understanding of every good thing we share for the sake of Christ. 7 Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the Lord’s people.

    Our love towards others can make a big impact on people. We can’t be hypocrites and love from a far but act on love, to love like Jesus. Love is expressed, shown, felt, long suffering, patient, etc. Showing the love of Jesus to others can truly impact and change someone’s lives. I still remember the love that I felt the first day I walked into POFW and from the cookie visit to the revisits. It just put something inside of you to show you that someone cares about you. Feeling that love is what we needed and were looking for without actually knowing what we were looking for. It was the seal to the best decision we’ve made. I always pray the Lord would help me love how He loves because it truly does make a difference. We have to make the souls feel special and important no matter what their background is. Like Pastor says is their important to God they have to be important to us. Every soul matters from baby to elder.

  24. “I wanted to keep him here with me while I am in these chains for preaching the Good News, and he would have helped me on your behalf.

    One more thing—please prepare a guest room for me, for I am hoping that God will answer your prayers and let me return to you soon.”
    ‭‭Philemon‬ ‭1:13, 22‬ ‭NLT‬‬

    I’m coming home!
    Reading this I prayed for revelation from God. After about the 3rd or 4th time I thought to myself about our prodigal children.
    This week I’ve thought of my loved ones, I’ve though of my friends loved ones, and I’ve even thought of our leaders loved ones.
    Our first prayer is to see our family saved. That’s we want, but it’s time we start reserving a spot for when they’re coming home. We need to start prophesying over them seats and over their lives. I truly believe that revival is about to get ahold of our families in Jesus name. So call me up tell em what you want get those reservations going. Cause they’re coming home.

  25. Above and beyond

    21 Having confidence in thy obedience I wrote unto thee, knowing that thou wilt also do more than I say.

    In a world where just doing the minimum is the everyday mentality, what are we doing? It’s not enough to just say that you are a christian. Yet, as christianity has grown, fewer people want to do what is required and expected. When I speak to other “Christian” people, there are amazed of how much we do. The outreach, the planning, the services, even the moves of God. We cannot stand by and watch our world just dissipate in front of us, we must do something about it. I am proud to be in a church body that is willing to go the extra mile for His Kingdom. Seeking His Kigdom first has been an eye opening experience and I thank God that he has put this into our Pastor to share it with us and to challenge us to do it. To go above and beyond.

  26. 8 That is why I am boldly asking a favor of you. I could demand it in the name of Christ because it is the right thing for you to do.

    Do you have to be asked or demanded?

    Growing up, and even to this day I despise doing the dishes. Too many textures and smells, and it just generally gross. Regardless, as a child living under the roof of my parents, chores were part of everyday life. Unfortunately, those days I had to do the dishes, I never did them when “asked”, it would always get to the point of demanding, with the occasional threats.

    We do the same to God. His word simply asks us many things. Yet, how many times have we read it, ignored it, and it gets to a point of demanding?

    Why let it get to the point of demanding? Allow a simple obedience spirit to reside in you, that when asked, you just simply obey.

  27. Your love has given me much joy and comfort, my brother, for your kindness has often refreshed the hearts of God’s people.
    Philemon 1:7 NLT
    Don’t every let someone take the love and kindness that God gave you use it to help and Comfort In need

  28. iLove the Kingdom

    “For we have great joy and consolation in thy love, because the bowels of the saints are refreshed by thee, brother.”
    ‭‭Philemon‬ ‭1:7‬ ‭KJV‬‬

    Wow, this verse is deep y’all. I looked up the word “bowels” and found out the Greek word is where we get the word “spleen” from. Look at the context of this scripture. The saints are refreshed by the presence of Philemon. The “spleen” is what helps clean the blood and helps stop infection.

    The question is, are we part of the problem or part of the solution? Do we poison the saints or do we remove filth and help stop infection? We must all work together in the body and it would be nice if we all worked in unity to have a healthy body.

  29. “I beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds:”
    ‭‭Philemon‬ ‭1:10‬ ‭KJV‬‬

    There are times and seasons in our lives when we are up and when we are down. Times when we feel that we can conquer the world and times when we have trouble just feeding ourselves. But here Paul writes about a son born at his lowest time. When Pail was shackled in bonds unable to go his excuse was not that he couldn’t go so he couldn’t make disciples. He found someone else in bonds and set them free even though he remained in his own bonds. So by this example I submit the bonds were not keeping him from anything but rather positioning him for the work of the Lord.

  30. And I am praying that you will put into action the generosity that comes from your faith as you understand and experience all the good things we have in Christ.
    Philemon 1:6 NLT
    Last night at BOTT we experienced this verse. We experienced so many awesome moves of God and messages from Him that it was time to put our faith into action. The call was made for a Missions offering and the near 3000 people present raised over half a million dollars for the cause of furthering the Gospel! Glory to God! There is coming a harvest so we better be ready!!!

  31. “…I hear of your love and of your faith which you have toward the Lord Jesus and toward all the saints (God’s people). I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective and powerful because of your accurate knowledge of every good thing which is ours in Christ.”
    PHILEMON 1:5‭-‬6 AMP

    When I read this, I couldn’t help but think of Bro. Hunley’s message on Apostolic Context. Paul had heard of Philemon’s faith and love toward all the saints. Philemon had a “sheep among sheep” ministry. He was good at sharing God’s love with those who were already saved. His love for God and for the body of Christ caused him to refresh the hearts of many of God’s children, and Paul commended him on this. However, he also prayed that Philemon’s witnessing would become effective and powerful. Paul wanted Philemon to turn his faith and zealous love toward them that were without the body.

    It appears that Onesimus was a slave in Philemon’s house. He ran away and somehow ended up in Paul’s company in prison, where Paul converted him to Christianity. Perhaps Paul felt that Philemon’s witness was lacking because Onesimus had not been converted prior to running away. (If Philemon’s treatment of those without the body was as loving and enriching as it was to those within, why would his slaves be running away?)

    Of course, there is always the possibility that Onesimus ran away because Philemon was constantly bombarding him with the Gospel, and he didn’t want to hear it. Then, he lands in the lap of a preacher who was ten times more persistent than the one he ran from. (Isn’t that just like our God?!) In either case, Paul felt it necessary to pray that Philemon would become effective and powerful in sharing his faith with unbelievers.

    God wants us all to become powerful witnesses of His Word. We can’t do this if we confine our ministry to loving the saints only. We must get out of our comfort zone and learn to reach effectively to those who don’t have, and who may appear to not want, the Gospel message.

  32. 15 For perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever;
    16 Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord?
    17 If thou count me therefore a partner, receive him as myself.
    18 If he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put that on mine account;

    What a great example forgiveness and restoration when Paul asks Philemon to forgive the servant who ran away. He is coming back as a brother in Christ and is now more profitable to him. I believe backsliders will be coming home and we must rejoice over them like Heaven does when they return. I connected with a young mom on FB who was in our Sunday school classes at Bro Fieldings church years ago and she told me she wanted to go to an apostolic church! I invited her to POFW and I can’t wait to hug her in person. She also said that the church helped her through a hard childhood-the church was her refuge and will be again when we receive her in love.

  34. “I always thank my God when I pray for you, Philemon, because I keep hearing about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all of God’s people.”
    ‭‭Philemon‬ ‭1:4-5‬ ‭NLT‬‬
    Lord, I pray that our faith increase. That we as a church will stand true to our beliefs and convictons. And I pray that our love for all of God’s people would increase. I pray for unity.

  35. This chapter is a great example of how we should be willing to forgive fellow believers that have done us wrong for the greater good of God’s work. Onesimus had been no foot to Philemon and had done him wrong while his slave, however, Paul asked Philomen to look past what he had done, look past his faults and forgive his debts so they would be able to work together for the sake of the gospel.

    We should be able to do the same as fellow believers. Yes, we’ve been hurt, there may be things we don’t like about each other, and perhaps we feel like we could never befriend certain fellow believers. However, let’s get over our hurts and our pride so we can forgive and forget. If we cannot work with one another we will not be truly united in the Kingdom.

  36. Philemon 1:10-11
    10) I beseech the for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds:
    11) Which in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me:

    Onesimus is Latinized form of the Greek name Onesimos which meant beneficial, profitable, (and in other places I read – useful and helpful).

    Onesimus was a slave of Philemon, who ran away. He flees to Rome, where at some point, encounters Paul, hears the gospel, and is saved. Now he is no longer unprofitable but profitable, beneficial, useful and helpful to the Kingdom of God.

    We too, when we were “slaves” to sin, were unprofitable. But now that we have heard the gospel and are saved, we have become profitable, beneficial, useful and helpful to the Kingdom of God.

  37. “I appeal to you to show kindness to my child, Onesimus. I became his father in the faith while here in prison. Onesimus hasn’t been of much use to you in the past, but now he is very useful to both of us. I am sending him back to you, and with him comes my own heart.”
    ‭‭Philemon‬ ‭1:10-12‬ ‭NLT‬‬

    Sometimes people are sent and we don’t understand. It doesn’t give us a platform for condemnation. We are to show love. In this case we see that Onesimus was trained while he was gone. He is then being sent back to help them again. I’m not sure the conditions of his leaving, but coming back he is to have a new slate and a place to work along side those who already labor.

  39. 16 Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord?

  40. 7 Your love has given me much joy and comfort, my brother, for your kindness has often refreshed the hearts of God’s people.

    What you show in attitude, you’ll receive the same in return. Show kindness, love and respect, you receive it in return. Others are watching your attitude, they way you speak, how you treat others at all times. Think before you speak and before you act, perception goes along way.

  41. Phil. 16 You’re getting him back now for good— and no mere slave this time, but a true Christian brother! That’s what he was to me —he’ll be even more than that to you.

    Colossians 3:22 Servants , obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as a menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God:

  42. 10 I beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds:
    11 Which in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me:
    12 Whom I have sent again: thou therefore receive him, that is, mine own bowels:
    13 Whom I would have retained with me, that in thy stead he might have ministered unto me in the bonds of the gospel:
    14 But without thy mind would I do nothing; that thy benefit should not be as it were of necessity, but willingly.
    15 For perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever;
    16 Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord?
    17 If thou count me therefore a partner, receive him as myself.
    18 If he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put that on mine account;
    19 I Paul have written it with mine own hand, I will repay it: albeit I do not say to thee how thou owest unto me even thine own self besides.

    Paul starts off his letter to Philemon acknowledging his age not in years but in the Lord, his wisdom and love for God.
    Paul begins to ask that Onesimus his son V10 (not his real son but son in the gospel) would be welcome back. You have to know Onesimus was a slave (in v11-v16 imply this)
    It says Onesimus leaves and Paul some how connects with him and teaches the word to him and Onesimus becomes Paul’s son in the gospel.
    v15 Paul tells I know he ran away for a time but he has been with me and is changed forgive him.
    v18-v19 Paul takes Onesimus sin upon himself and says if you cannot forget or forgive what he has done the money you lost then I Paul will pay his debt I will take what is owned and pay the debt. I’ll give him a new start.
    It is unclear whether or not Onesimus had stolen from Philemon or not. it is highly suggested that he did by this verse.
    By offering to pay that debt Onesimus was unable to pay Paul modeled Jesus Christ who paid the price for our sins though he was without sin or guilt.
    Lets not be so quick to not forgive someone for it wasn’t so long ago where we could not pay the debt of sin and Jesus came and said I’ll pay the bill go live in peace and in freedom from sin.

  43. “That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.”
    ‭‭Philemon‬ ‭1:6‬ ‭KJV‬‬

    Our faith needs to be expressed in worship and in prayer and in testimony. Our faith is something God has given us all, even though some may not have large faith they have an amount of faith. Faith is something we all have and need to use date we need to have faith in God and faith in his word.

  44. 4 I thank my God, making mention of thee always in my prayers,
    5 Hearing of thy love and faith, which thou hast toward the Lord Jesus, and toward all saints;

    As saints we should have continual prayer for one another. The old saying out of “sight out of mind” is often true. This is why we should keep our eyes on the Jesus that lives in each of us and our minds will wonder less about the ways we frustrate one another.

    This saying is also true in the fact that when we take our eyes away from each other we will forget the other even exsists. It’s important that we are spiritually watchful for each other. Praying for one another give love towards one another and towards Jesus Christ.

    We need to learn to forgive and be free of negativity. Unity is counting on us!

  45. When we work together in Christ, we can accomplish great things. It doesn’t matter what the enemy tries to throw our way, God gives us the power to withstand his tactics. If we can keep our eyes on the one who is able to save and give us strength, the enemy can not stop us.

  46. From this chapter I learned that Hod will always love us, be with us everywhere no madder what. If know one else is on your side God will be there don’t worry of fear because God is here!😁

  47. 1 Paul, a prisoner of Jesus Christ, and Timothy our brother, unto Philemon our dearly beloved, and fellowlabourer,

    When I read this verse I thought of all the things I have been a prisoner to in my life that I didn’t get anything back but sorrow and pain and how being a prisoner to Jesus Christ who died for us that we might be saved is the best thing that ever happened to me and he is the only thing I want to be a prisoner to in my life because he has delivered me.

  48. “But I won’t do anything unless you agree to it first. I want your act of kindness to come from your heart, and not be something you feel forced to do.”(Philemon‬ ‭1:14‬ ‭CEV‬‬)

    We know that without God’s agreement we will only get worse. We must always pray to God for guidance and direction for he knows what’s best for us in our lives. God wants our actions of kindness to come willingly with a committed and compassion from our own hearts and not from our own understanding when we feel like being forced to do something we should always think of others before ourselves and help them out of love.

  49. 17 If thou count me therefore a partner, receive him as myself.

    I can understand why it may be hard to accept someone in place of another. If someone of authority sends a substitute in their place it is for a reason. God always does things for a reason. What he is expressing is .. if you accept my brother in Christ then you are accepting me. We can’t be in all places everywhere we would like to be. Paul longs to be with them and even wants them to prepare a place for him to stay there. It takes great trust and confidence in a people and a church not only to send your esteemed partners but also to help prepare for him.

  50. 16 Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord?

    17 If thou count me therefore a partner, receive him as myself.

    18 If he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put that on mine account;

    19 I Paul have written it with mine own hand, I will repay it: albeit I do not say to thee how thou owest unto me even thine own self besides.

    The fleshy desire mentioned aims towards everyone, nobody is perfect. Are we perfect should we condemn our brothers for doing wrong and push them away because your perfect now and your too good now that you can’t love and forgive your brothers when they do something wrong. A genuine brotherly love gives his life without mention, how tragic it is to see deception from a brother in a minute and condemn without even attempting to encourage, love and forgive a brother just like God wants us to do.

  51. 14 But without thy mind would I do nothing; that thy benefit should not be as it were of necessity, but willingly.
    15 For perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever;

    This verse spoke to me. “That thy benefit should not be as it were of necessity, but willingly.” There are so many times I hear, “what’s in it for me?” or “what will I get out of it?” when asking for someone’s help on a task. We shouldn’t only be willing to help someone when is convenient for us or when it only benefits us. But we should be willing to help out our neighbor. Recently, I resenting helping someone because I did not want to help out a fellow friend but I had to repent later for the attitude of selfishness and laziness. We should always lend a helping hand without expecting something in return.

  52. I always thank my God when I pray for you, Philemon, because I keep hearing about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all of God’s people. And I am praying that you will put into action the generosity that comes from your faith as you understand and experience all the good things we have in Christ. Your love has given me much joy and comfort, my brother, for your kindness has often refreshed the hearts of God’s people.
    Philemon 1:4‭-‬7 NLT

    The word Philemon in Greek means affection. So it no wonder why Paul speaks of Philemon’s love and kindness through his faith. He says his love has go in him much joy. The biggest commandment is to love one another. I think showing someone affection through your faith is most important because if we able to capture their hearts think of what else we can do for them through Christ.
