journeys. After prayer and fasting and God’s leadership, Paul travels with Barnabas and John Mark to the Island of Cyprus. Pray for God’s hand upon our Church’s missionaries as they boldly set out to demonstrate God’s love in a hurting world.

Acts 13

Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.

As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.

And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.

So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed unto Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus.

And when they were at Salamis, they preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews: and they had also John to their minister.

And when they had gone through the isle unto Paphos, they found a certain sorcerer, a false prophet, a Jew, whose name was Barjesus:

Which was with the deputy of the country, Sergius Paulus, a prudent man; who called for Barnabas and Saul, and desired to hear the word of God.

But Elymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turn away the deputy from the faith.

Then Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him.

10 And said, O full of all subtilty and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?

11 And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness; and he went about seeking some to lead him by the hand.

12 Then the deputy, when he saw what was done, believed, being astonished at the doctrine of the Lord.

13 Now when Paul and his company loosed from Paphos, they came to Perga in Pamphylia: and John departing from them returned to Jerusalem.

14 But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and sat down.

15 And after the reading of the law and the prophets the rulers of the synagogue sent unto them, saying, Ye men and brethren, if ye have any word of exhortation for the people, say on.

16 Then Paul stood up, and beckoning with his hand said, Men of Israel, and ye that fear God, give audience.

17 The God of this people of Israel chose our fathers, and exalted the people when they dwelt as strangers in the land of Egypt, and with an high arm brought he them out of it.

18 And about the time of forty years suffered he their manners in the wilderness.

19 And when he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Chanaan, he divided their land to them by lot.

20 And after that he gave unto them judges about the space of four hundred and fifty years, until Samuel the prophet.

21 And afterward they desired a king: and God gave unto them Saul the son of Cis, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, by the space of forty years.

22 And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave their testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will.

23 Of this man’s seed hath God according to his promise raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus:

24 When John had first preached before his coming the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.

25 And as John fulfilled his course, he said, Whom think ye that I am? I am not he. But, behold, there cometh one after me, whose shoes of his feet I am not worthy to loose.

26 Men and brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, and whosoever among you feareth God, to you is the word of this salvation sent.

27 For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him.

28 And though they found no cause of death in him, yet desired they Pilate that he should be slain.

29 And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a sepulchre.

30 But God raised him from the dead:

31 And he was seen many days of them which came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are his witnesses unto the people.

32 And we declare unto you glad tidings, how that the promise which was made unto the fathers,

33 God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.

34 And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he said on this wise, I will give you the sure mercies of David.

35 Wherefore he saith also in another psalm, Thou shalt not suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

36 For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption:

37 But he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption.

38 Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins:

39 And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.

40 Beware therefore, lest that come upon you, which is spoken of in the prophets;

41 Behold, ye despisers, and wonder, and perish: for I work a work in your days, a work which ye shall in no wise believe, though a man declare it unto you.

42 And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath.

43 Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.

44 And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God.

45 But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming.

46 Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles.

47 For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth.

48 And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed.

49 And the word of the Lord was published throughout all the region.

50 But the Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts.

51 But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Iconium.

52 And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost.

  1. 11 And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness; and he went about seeking some to lead him by the hand.

    12 Then the deputy, when he saw what was done, believed, being astonished at the doctrine of the Lord.

    The ability to learn truth in those days was limited and most beliefs were rooted in the culture one lived in. Strangers and their ideas were difficult to accept. Often deceivers chose their path because of money or rebellious pride. We can see in these verses, the Lord took extreme measures that would ensure the establishment of Christianity in foreign cultures. Today we still can see that their are many distractions, albeit the Lord is not restricted by distractions because His spirit witnesses to the spirit of mankind.

  2. 40. Be careful! Don’t let the prophets’ words apply to you. For they said,

    41. ‘Look, you mockers, be amazed and die! For I am doing something in your own day, something you wouldn’t believe even if someone told you about it.’ NLT

    Don’t doubt or mock what has been prophesied, or you will witness it without experiencing it. 

    2 Kings 7:2

    The officer assisting the king said to the man of God, “That couldn’t happen even if the LORD opened the windows of heaven!” But Elisha replied, “You will see it happen with your own eyes, but you won’t be able to eat any of it!” NLT

  3. Acts 13: 48-49 [ amp] And when the Gentiles heard this, they rejoiced and gloried ( praised and gave thanks for ) the Word of God, and as many as were destined ( appionted and ordained) to eternal life believed adhered to, trusted on relied on Jesus as the Christ and their Savior.

    49] And so the Word of the Lord ( concerning eternal salvation through ( Christ) scattered and spread throughout the whole region.

    Paul went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, as he preached to the people, and some of the Jews believed. The Gentiles asked that they might preached to on the next Sabbath. Many of them also believed, When the Jews saw multitudes,they became envious of them.

    Never stop praising the Lord ,and giving thanks,and rejoicing him for everything he has done.

  4. 10Then he said, “You son of the devil, full of every sort of deceit and fraud, and enemy of all that is good! Will you never stop perverting the true ways of the Lord? 11Watch now, for the Lord has laid his hand of punishment upon you, and you will be struck blind. You will not see the sunlight for some time.” Instantly mist and darkness came over the man’s eyes, and he began groping around begging for someone to take his hand and lead him.

    Those who resist God are blind spiritually, so God just gave Elymas a physical blindness that matched his spiritual blindness. Sadly, we never hear of Elymas repenting, as Paul did.

  5. 51 But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Iconium.52 And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost

    There is nobody on this earth that has more reason to be filled with joy then those filled with the Holy Ghost. There are plenty of reasons that we can be happy and plenty of reasons to worry at any given moment because those are fading emotions, but there is nothing better than being filled with joy, then being filled with hope and purity all throughout your spirit. We have more power inside us to help us Shake the dust off your feet and move to the next area of our life by being in the presence of God. It just takes one prayer session and everything changes for us. All of our Anxiety stress can completely dissipate.

  6. Afterward they traveled from town to town across the entire island until finally they reached Paphos, where they met a Jewish sorcerer, a false prophet named Bar-Jesus. He had attached himself to the governor, Sergius Paulus, who was an intelligent man. The governor invited Barnabas and Saul to visit him, for he wanted to hear the word of God. But Elymas, the sorcerer (as his name means in Greek), interfered and urged the governor to pay no attention to what Barnabas and Saul said. He was trying to keep the governor from believing.Acts of the Apostles 13:6‭-‬8

    This isn’t just an ancient concept, this still happens today. Look at corruption in politics, unnecessary wars, dictators, etc. Behind any evil world force is a greater evil controlling it, BUT OUR GOD IS GREATER!

    Paul shows us how to deal with such things.

    Saul, also known as Paul, was filled with the Holy Spirit, and he looked the sorcerer in the eye. Then he said, “You son of the devil, full of every sort of deceit and fraud, and enemy of all that is good! Will you never stop perverting the true ways of the Lord? Watch now, for the Lord has laid his hand of punishment upon you, and you will be struck blind. You will not see the sunlight for some time.” Instantly mist and darkness came over the man’s eyes, and he began groping around begging for someone to take his hand and lead him. When the governor saw what had happened, he became a believer, for he was astonished at the teaching about the Lord.Acts of the Apostles 13:9‭-‬12 NLT

    Paul calls it out! Speaks to the spirit and takes control. BY THE AUTHORITY OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST this is how he did this. And we have that same authority! We can speak, declare, cast out, etc. We are given authority through our obedience and submission to Jesus Christ!!

  7. REVIVE

    FOLLOW THE FIRE TO RECEIVE JOY

    48 And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed.

    49 And the word of the Lord was published throughout all the region.

    50 But the Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts.

    51 But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Iconium.

    52 And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost.

    It is important for us to notice the process or events that occured prior to the disciples being FILLED with JOY and The HOLY GHOST.

    1. Those hungry for salvation gladly received it.
    2. They published or shared the WORD of the LORD everywhere.
    3. Jealous adversaries stirred up or initiated accusation, persecution against them.
    4. The disciples were expelled or put out of town.
    5. They shook off the rejection

    The process to FOLLOW THE FIRE TO RECEIVE JOY is often filled with pain, persecution, accusation and divination. BUT. Those who FOLLOW THE FIRE are FILLED WITH JOY and with THE HOLY GHOST.

  8. 52 And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost.

    Joy does not come from circumstance or possessions, but from the presence of God in our life. It is a fruit of the Spirit given to a believer filled with the Holy Ghost by the grace of God.

  9. REVIVE

    Acts 13:44 (KJV) And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God.

    Great revival broke out in Acts 13 to the point to where the whole city came to church. While that is a good thing, it turned ugly really soon. The Apostles didn’t lose heart, they simply wiped the dust off their feet and were filled with the Holy Ghost and Joy.

    Acts 13:51 But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Iconium. And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost.

    Then Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him.

    The Holy Ghost is given to us to operate in many functions. He is a comforter to those who are sorrowful, strength to the weak, joy to the sad, but in this instance we all see Him as wisdom and knowledge. The bible says the Holy Ghost will lead us …… we must be willing to follow that lead.  It reveal to Paul the spirit of the man. Likewise, it will reveal to us how to live, direction and wisdom. It is up to us to follow. 

  11. 46 Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles.

    Rom 8:37  Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. 

    Paul and Barnabas said the Jews judged themselves unworthy of everlasting life, and we can easily fall into the same trap if we let the things in our life control our destiny. Instead we must realize we are worthy and we are more than conquerors through him that loves us. For in him we live, and move, and have our being because we are his offspring the sons of God.

  12. Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles.

    For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth

    Everyone needs to hear the gospel, everyone needs salvation
    those who reject it and take it for granted, God always has someone whose heart is ready to receive and start a new life.

  13. Acts 14:51,52

    But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Iconium.And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost.

    (51) They shook off the dust of their feet against them.—The act was one of literal obedience to our Lord’s commands

    Matthew 10:14
    If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet.

  14. 51 But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Iconium.

    There will be those who reject our testimony or witness as we live for God, but that cannot be a deterrent to us because there will be those who receive it! It’s better to witness and allow God to water the seed that has been planted in the lives of our friends, co-workers and neighbors. He is able!

  15. Verses 48-49 MSG “When the non-Jewish outsiders heard this, they could hardly believe their good fortune. All who were marked out for real lifeput their trust in God—they honored God’s Word by receiving that life. And this Message of salvation spread like wildfire all through the region.” We too cannot back down; but stand our ground as we continue to Follow The Fire and ReVIVE our efforts in sharing this Message of salvation with everyone we come across!

  16. Acts 13:51-52 (KJV), “51) But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Iconium. 52) And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost.”

    POFW, it’s time to Shake Off The Dust Of Our Feet, Be Filled With JOY and With The HOLY GHOST, and RECEIVE The Prophetic Word that was spoken to us last night. GOD Has GREATER THINGS Instore For Us. A GREATER HARVEST Like We’ve Never Seen Before. Winning Nations. GREATER REVIVAL!!

  17. vs:38-39

    38-Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins

    39-And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.

    Paul’s sermon promises forgiveness to those who believe in Jesus and warns that a choice now must be made.

    The sermons of Acts remind us how clear the simple Gospel is. Let’s not confuse it by being drawn into arguments with the unconverted about peripheral issues, whether about the Bible, abortion, creationism, etc.

    We need to set our eyes on those that need salvation, decern those who are faking, keeping on praying for the lost. Being like Paul filled with the Holy Ghost.

  19. ”Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles.“

    Paul and Barnabas had boldness. It wasn’t through their own strength. It was thru the power of the Holy Ghost!
    This is exactly how Jesus will use you.
    We have the gospel that trumps all. Our city needs salvation. Share it to all who is willing to hear and receive.

    ”And David said to Solomon his son, Be strong and of good courage, and do it: fear not, nor be dismayed: for the LORD God, even my God, will be with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee, until thou hast finished all the work for the service of the house of the LORD.“
    ‭‭1 Chronicles‬ ‭28‬:‭20‬ ‭KJV‬‬

  20. ‭Acts of the Apostles 13:8 NLT‬
    [8] But Elymas, the sorcerer (as his name means in Greek), interfered and urged the governor to pay no attention to what Barnabas and Saul said. He was trying to keep the governor from believing.

    Don’t allow people to interfere with you and your relationship with God. God has done great things and will continue to do great things

  21. Acts 13

    49 And the word of the Lord was published throughout all the region.

    50 But the Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts.

    51 But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Iconium.

    52 And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost.

    The disciples went through many trials. They had been rejected by their own Jewish people and reached out to Gentiles. Today is Passover for the Jews. They are facing war in Israel, hatred at our colleges, and many trying times. We must pray for the Jewish community today. They have always been given trials through out their history.

    Thank you Jesus for this day.

  22. 30 But God raised him from the dead:

    31 And he was seen many days of them which came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are his witnesses unto the people.

    The fact that Jesus rose from the dead was well-attested. Those who came up with Jesus from Galilee to Jerusalem were still alive, and their witness could not be denied.

    When we do the work of God the enemy is not going to be happy. There will always be imposition, but there is power in the name of Jesus. No one stops God’s work.

  25. 22 And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave their testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will.

    Here is a nugget of beautiful information; it takes an individual that is going after God’s own heart to be able to fulfill all the will of God. If we love him, we will obey his commandments.
