3 John Chapter 1

3 John 1

1The elder unto the wellbeloved Gaius, whom I love in the truth.

2Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.

3For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth.

4I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.

5Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers;

6Which have borne witness of thy charity before the church: whom if thou bring forward on their journey after a godly sort, thou shalt do well:

7Because that for his name’s sake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles.

8We therefore ought to receive such, that we might be fellowhelpers to the truth.

9I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not.

10Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church.

11Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.

12Demetrius hath good report of all men, and of the truth itself: yea, and we also bear record; and ye know that our record is true.

13I had many things to write, but I will not with ink and pen write unto thee:

14But I trust I shall shortly see thee, and we shall speak face to face. Peace be to thee. Our friends salute thee. Greet the friends by name.

  1. V.9,10 I wrote to the church: but diotrephes who loves to have the pre eminence among them receiveth us not. Wherefore if I come I will remember his deeds, which he doeth, prating (speaking empty talk) against us with malicious words. Not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church. Wow this man fully wanted and loved “power” I don’t believe that this man had a love for the sheep. It was all about him being superior. It was about him looking good…he spent his time speaking empty words against the brothers. This man was self seeking and unloving!!! It reminds me of matt 7:5….in sheeps clothing, but inwardly they are raving wolves…a contention man one who causes strife in the body..i thank my God that this spirit is not in our church.

  2. v 5 “Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers,”
Whatever we do for the Lord must be ongoing. Not an occasional happening.

  3. Here is my prayer to all fellow Apostolic believers:
2 Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.

A fathers delight; natural and spiritual:
4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.

Represented again in this chapter we find:Favor, Truth (Honesty in Doctrine), and Holiness (Separating right from wrong).

    BE Church
We are the example the world seeks.

  4. Amplified – 4 I have no greater joy than this, to hear that my [spiritual] children are living their lives in the Truth.

What a great privilege it is to know that those who we are disciplling, those who we are care partners with, those who we call our “babies” are living and walking in truth. This only happens when we nurture them, train them, pray for them, pray for them, pray for them, lead them, teach them, and did I mention pray for them that Christ be formed in them. Let’s Be Church to those God has entrusted to our care so that we can also say, I have great joy that our children (spiritually speaking) walk in truth!

  5. V For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkway in the truth.

What a testimony ! (RSB) –The influence of
Gaius, his godly life and his character.
He was noble, follows God’s truth,he aided
both ” brothers ” and ” strangers”, traveling evangelists and teachers were dependent on men like Gaius for shelter and sustenance to help them on their journey with food and money means of travel and so on.
Above all he was loyal. Support in every way
    in God’s service.
RSB- v8 Those who support traveling teachers become partners in their work.
Wow talk about love, faithfulness and hospitality.

  6. 11Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.

Be of God, Be Good, Be Church!

  7. 11 Dear friend, don’t copy the evil deeds of others! Follow the example of people who do kind deeds. They are God’s children, but those who are always doing evil have never seen God.
What a challenge this verse puts forth. This verse causes us to be mindful daily of the example we set before others. Are we someone that others want to follow? Are we a godly influence? Are we an example of kindness and love? Do we hold the standards and principles that we claim to live by?
I want to challenge myself daily to live like there is no tomorrow.

    Step up and Be Church!

  8. Anyone who has a conscience and especially on who has the Holy Ghost ought to know the difference between good and evil. The concept is very simple, to be of God you must do good not evil.

Doing evil could very well be NOT doing good.

Don’t BE stagnant, not doing any bad but not doing any good either… that’s a sin.

  9. So many statements about truth& love, these two must be important in our walk with God. Live by truth, live in love.

  10. Vs. 4 there is no greater joy to hear that your children walk in truth, especially your physical children. There can also be no greater sadness than to know that they have strayed.

  11. Vs I wish for you to prosper and be in good health even as your soul prospers.

We pray for people to be helped & healed and wonder why God hasn’t answered and it could be that our prayer should be for the person’s walk with God! When they prosper spiritually, then the rest of it falls into place.

  12. In the church’s early days, traveling prophets, evangelists, and teachers were helped on their way by people like Gaius who housed and fed them. Hospitality is an active and much appreciated way to show our love. It is probably most important today because of our individualistic and self centered society. I do not think we know how many lonely people we are in contact with every day and who wonder if anyone cares whether they live or die. We need to show hospitality to everyone we are in contact with because we do not know what they are going through.

  13. 8 So we ourselves should support them so that we can be their partners as they teach the truth.

I’m so thankful for a missions giving church! Every soul that is filled, baptized, and taught on the mission field is impacted by POFW by our giving.

  14. V4 “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.”

I would believe this catches the heartbeat of God, to see His children walking faithfully in His ways. We were created for relationship with Him, He gave us breath and life for a purpose… what joy must it bring to Him that even with all the evil in this world and the fallen state of man that we would willingly turn to Him and choose to walk in His truth?

V11 “Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.”

Psa 100:3 “Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.”

John 10:4, 14 “And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. … I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.”

  15. This chapter speaks of giving to the work of God and deception. We are bought with a price and we are not our own, for that very reason we are obligated to give to work of God. If we profess to be a Christian, than it will come natural to help other Christians. We must be careful of those that appear to be friendly so they may sow discord amongst the church, for that reason we must study the Word, pray and get under the authority of a Godly leader. May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  16. 11Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.

We are not saved by our works, but we will be known by what we do. So do good, for everyone is watching!!! Lets your fruits identify who you belong to.

  17. 11 Friend, don’t go along with evil. Model the good. The person who does good does God’s work. The person who does evil falsifies God, doesn’t know the first thing about God. (MSG)

  18. Verses 5-6 (Message) read….”Dear friend, when you extend hospitality to Christian brothers and sisters, even when they are strangers, you make the faith visible. They’ve made a full report back to the church here, a message about your love. It’s good work you’re doing, helping these travelers on their way, hospitality worthy of God himself!” Our faith needs to be visible……love, love, love

  19. 4I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.
    5Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers;

I hope that I have a report similar to this…

  20. We as examples of righteousness to this evil world have to de minful of every utterance coming forth out of our mouths and hands, It says that evil doers have never known God. We have the responsibility to our God to be an example for him continualy. When we acheive this he will be pleased. My ultimate goal is to please my King.
