Deuteronomy Chapter 31

Deuteronomy 31

1And Moses went and spake these words unto all Israel.

2And he said unto them, I am an hundred and twenty years old this day; I can no more go out and come in: also the LORD hath said unto me, Thou shalt not go over this Jordan.

3The LORD thy God, he will go over before thee, and he will destroy these nations from before thee, and thou shalt possess them: and Joshua, he shall go over before thee, as the LORD hath said.

4And the LORD shall do unto them as he did to Sihon and to Og, kings of the Amorites, and unto the land of them, whom he destroyed.

5And the LORD shall give them up before your face, that ye may do unto them according unto all the commandments which I have commanded you.

6Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

7And Moses called unto Joshua, and said unto him in the sight of all Israel, Be strong and of a good courage: for thou must go with this people unto the land which the LORD hath sworn unto their fathers to give them; and thou shalt cause them to inherit it.

8And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.

9And Moses wrote this law, and delivered it unto the priests the sons of Levi, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and unto all the elders of Israel.

10And Moses commanded them, saying, At the end of every seven years, in the solemnity of the year of release, in the feast of tabernacles,

11When all Israel is come to appear before the LORD thy God in the place which he shall choose, thou shalt read this law before all Israel in their hearing.

12Gather the people together, men and women, and children, and thy stranger that is within thy gates, that they may hear, and that they may learn, and fear the LORD your God, and observe to do all the words of this law:

13And that their children, which have not known any thing, may hear, and learn to fear the LORD your God, as long as ye live in the land whither ye go over Jordan to possess it.

14And the LORD said unto Moses, Behold, thy days approach that thou must die: call Joshua, and present yourselves in the tabernacle of the congregation, that I may give him a charge. And Moses and Joshua went, and presented themselves in the tabernacle of the congregation.

15And the LORD appeared in the tabernacle in a pillar of a cloud: and the pillar of the cloud stood over the door of the tabernacle.

16And the LORD said unto Moses, Behold, thou shalt sleep with thy fathers; and this people will rise up, and go a whoring after the gods of the strangers of the land, whither they go to be among them, and will forsake me, and break my covenant which I have made with them.

17Then my anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they shall be devoured, and many evils and troubles shall befall them; so that they will say in that day, Are not these evils come upon us, because our God is not among us?

18And I will surely hide my face in that day for all the evils which they shall have wrought, in that they are turned unto other gods.

19Now therefore write ye this song for you, and teach it the children of Israel: put it in their mouths, that this song may be a witness for me against the children of Israel.

20For when I shall have brought them into the land which I sware unto their fathers, that floweth with milk and honey; and they shall have eaten and filled themselves, and waxen fat; then will they turn unto other gods, and serve them, and provoke me, and break my covenant.

21And it shall come to pass, when many evils and troubles are befallen them, that this song shall testify against them as a witness; for it shall not be forgotten out of the mouths of their seed: for I know their imagination which they go about, even now, before I have brought them into the land which I sware.

22Moses therefore wrote this song the same day, and taught it the children of Israel.

23And he gave Joshua the son of Nun a charge, and said, Be strong and of a good courage: for thou shalt bring the children of Israel into the land which I sware unto them: and I will be with thee.

24And it came to pass, when Moses had made an end of writing the words of this law in a book, until they were finished,

25That Moses commanded the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, saying,

26Take this book of the law, and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee.

27For I know thy rebellion, and thy stiff neck: behold, while I am yet alive with you this day, ye have been rebellious against the LORD; and how much more after my death?

28Gather unto me all the elders of your tribes, and your officers, that I may speak these words in their ears, and call heaven and earth to record against them.

29For I know that after my death ye will utterly corrupt yourselves, and turn aside from the way which I have commanded you; and evil will befall you in the latter days; because ye will do evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger through the work of your hands.

30And Moses spake in the ears of all the congregation of Israel the words of this song, until they were ended.

*Moses was trying to get Israel to understand relationship

6Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

*It is the same principles of the Word today.
(1Jn 4:18) There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

  2. 6. Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

I gain strength and encouragement in knowing that God is with me everyday and He will not fail or forsake me.

  3. New Leader, Same Promise

Joshua is the new kid on the block but as we read we see that the spotlight is not necessarily on Joshua, he is just recognized as the leader. The promise of God is emphasized and it is made plain that the Lord will go before the people; most of the first 8 verses of chapter 31 are reminding the people that the Lord is responsible for the victory.

Human bodies age and Leaders can only lead as long as their physical state allows them, but the promise of God are forever. God will raise up new leaders or new generations but it is up to the leader to carry out the same plans for the same promise

  4. THE ANSWER IS IN THE ARK

26 Take this book of the law, and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee.

In Moses command and final charge to Israel, there was no candy coated promises of rose garden strolls through life. He boldly proclaimed to them that they would fail, and that God would hide his face from them.

However he did not leave them hopeless and helpless. God gave them:

    1. A song – Reminding them where God brought them from; so they would know how to get back.

    2. The Law – In a sure place.

The ARK – a : a boat or ship held to resemble that in which Noah and his family were preserved from the Flood
b : something that affords protection and safety
2a : the sacred chest representing to the Hebrews the presence of God among them

We as Israel have learned where to go when we need instruction and direction from God. We run to the ark of his covenants; where the law (the WORD of GOD) resides and is spoken. In times of trouble we must always run to the Ark!

THE ANSWER IS IN THE ARK; the place that affords safety and protection. The CHURCH

  5. 6Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

This verse spoke more to me today: i find courage and love in the Lord when I find I can’t or think I can’t go on anymore God is there to guide me thru, he will not forsake we sometimes forsake God but I’m so thankful he is there for us……..

  6. 16And the LORD said unto Moses, Behold, thou shalt sleep with thy fathers; and this people will rise up, and go a whoring after the gods of the strangers of the land, whither they go to be among them, and will forsake me, and break my covenant which I have made with them.

It is amazing the love God has for his people, that He would warn the leader that when the people cross over into the Promise Land that they are going to be faced with new choices and new distractions, and they are going to go after the strange Gods and forsake the one who has been their shield, protector and provider.

God sees our future as well and knows the things that we are going to go “whoring” after to distract us from our purpose – The Promised Land of Harvest and continual Revival. He provides warnings through His Word and His Leader. It is important that we heed the instructions that God would not have to hide His face from us and bring things to our lives to help us to see that He is not among us.

  7. Verse 6 in the MSG reads…”Be strong. Take courage. Don’t be intimidated. Don’t give them a second thought because God, your God, is striding ahead of you. He’s right there with you. He won’t let you down; he won’t leave you.” This reminded me of what Pastor said last night about no longer being intimidated. God is on our side and he is striding ahead of us; so, let’s go!

  8. “Be strong and of a good courage”

Looking at the Strong’s entries for “strong” and “(good) courage,” I found that while these two words are seemingly very similar with regards to their English translations, they have two distinct meanings. They both refer to strength, boldness, courage, etc., but “strong” gives a sense of strength through fortification (such as taking on armor to protect, strengthen, gird the body during combat) and “(good) courage” gives the sense of strength through an alert, strong, nimble-thinking mind (as opposed to being cast down in mind, experiencing a break-down, etc.)

This charge to “be strong and of a good courage” is very reminiscent of Paul’s later writings in Ephesians 6:10-18 “10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

    14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

    15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints”

  9. Here Moses and Joshua stand before God. A ceremony of the mantle, or passing the torch, if you will.

God speaks to Moses one of the last pieces of instruction he will ever hear. Tell them this song.

This song is not of triumph and victory. This is not a song of future celebration. This is a song of future peril.

At the end of his shepherding Moses, one of the greatest men of God who ever lived receives this report card.

We must be careful with the time we have.

  10. Great chapter to read after last night preaching, BE STRONG AND OF GOOD COURAGE, during the battle sing, praise, and give a shout of Victory!!! Confuse the devil, no matter the circumstances BE STRONG AND OF GOOD COURAGE! I have no strength or courage of my own for I rely fully on God’s Strength and Courage.

  11. We can learn so much between the ration ship between Moses Joshua because Moses as Joshua’s spiritual father loved and trusted Joshua to take to people farther then him when he passed.
Moses showed trust by listening to God when God said pass the leadership to Moses he trusted God and Moses to lead the people Moses could said no im not going to pass on leadership to Joshua because I started this but he obeyed God.
Joshua showed sonship by following a old man leadership. Joshua could of said you are a old man Moses I don’t need to follow you I am young I can lead I can fight there’s no need in following you but Joshua knew the importants in a spiritual father he listen and followed Moses and took the people on. We need to follow are pastor and have to same relationship with him as they did.

    • Moses could of left the leadership to his son but God chose Joshua to lead the people.
I believe one reason Moses could have peace with passing this to Joshua is because number God told him to but number 2 Joshua had a relationship with Moses and Joshua learned to lead and to follow Moses trusted him.
But like all fathers Moses problemly wanted to leave to leadership with his sons but he obeyed God.

  12. Vs. 6-8, ” Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee. And Moses called unto Joshua, and said unto him in the sight of all Israel, Be strong and of a good courage: for thou must go with this people unto the land which the LORD hath sworn unto their fathers to give them; and thou shalt cause them to inherit it. And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.”

I am so thankful that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and for ever. (Heb. 13:8) The same promise that he promised to Joshua and the children of Israel is for us today. Heb. 13:5-6 says, ” Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he said, I Will Never Leave Thee, nor Forsake Thee. So that we may boldly say, The Lord Is My Helper, and I Will Not Fear What Man Shall Do Unto Me.”

So I say to the people of POFW. Be strong and of good courage, be not afraid, and know that God is with us. Let’s win this city for Jesus!

  13. 10-13
Many see in the comand to read the law to all every seventh year to a call to Israel to renew its commitment to God.The childern is significant they need the law and need to know the Law.They also need to see there parents make a commitment to God.

  14. the word is awesome. this tells me that i shouldnt be afraid of this world because everything that we go through God is already on the other side praying that i make it without fear of what can happen. my fear is that i may not please my heavenly father so i try everyday to put a smile in His heart even if no one else understands what i do and y i do it my God knows and that is the most important thing to me

  15. NLT 29 I know that after my death you will become utterly corrupt and will turn from the way I have commanded you to follow. In the days to come, disaster will come down on you, for you will do what is evil in the LORD’s sight, making him very angry with your actions.”

Being with God, we are safe and protected. Once we live his comfort and venture out to explore other religiions & Gods, we lose God’s protection. Everyday we are challenged to seek other things for protection and comfort.

God reminds us of the consequences if we decide to leave Jesus. God knows the Isrealites are entering into a new land, and knows some will explore these new religions and other gods. He tells us to obey his laws, and follow him. Teach our children about the one true God.

  16. What great joy, and satisfaction Moses must have felt knowing he was a chosen instrument in GOD’S plan, and he was doing GOD’s perfect will.

I’m so thankful for all the great plans GOD has for the POFW. We must be strong and of good courage.
It is the LORD our GOD who is crossing over before us. We have nothing to fear as we pray
” Not my will, but thine be done”Lk.22:42
    All Glory belongs to GOD!

  17. This chapter illustrates remembrance. Moses forewarned the children of Israel what would happen if they became complacent and turned away from God. We (I) must be prayerful that we (I) never become conceited and forget where God brought us (me) from and all that God has provided us (me) with. May the good Lord bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  18. 23And he gave Joshua the son of Nun a charge, and said, Be strong and of a good courage: for thou shalt bring the children of Israel into the land which I sware unto them: and I will be with thee.

  19. V. 6 Be strong and of good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for The LORD thy God, HE it is that doth go with thee; He will not fail thee(Me), Nor forsake thee(Me)…Thank the Lord for His word that is alive and He Is always faithful to His Word!!!!!!

  20. 23And he gave Joshua the son of Nun a charge, and said, Be strong and of a good courage: for thou shalt bring the children of Israel into the land which I sware unto them: and I will be with thee.

We must be strong in the Lord and never give up. Our strength is what will keep us going. If we will allow God to lead us and guide us, he will give us strength.

  21. IT’S PERSONAL!

    New Living Translation reads:
6 So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the LORD your God will PERSONALLY go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you.”

I’m so grateful for a God that makes it “personal” He cares so much for his people that he will personally be involved. It’s very encouraging for me to become more like Christ and become personal to those around me. To become Christ hands, feet, heart and to be full of love and compassion.

  22. 6Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

This promise stirs up faith and brings encouragement to us as His people! To know that no matter what the trial you are going through or no matter what you are facing just ahead…God is ahead-right there before us -and this trial has already passed by Him and He has already made the way for us to now pass through it! He is our shield our buckler our strong tower and we will make it through!

  23. The people were given a song so that they wouldn’t forget where they came from and were promised. Let us not forget the song that God has put in our hearts of his truth, blessings, great works, and all that he has brought into our lives. He is our song!

  24. God is faithful to keep his promises even though he knows mankind (we) will stray from his commandments. We should be more like Jesus and not stray but stay faithful to God’s commandments and lead others to him. We should be strong and of good courage as we witness to this dying world.

  25. 19Now therefore write ye this song for you, and teach it the children of Israel: put it in their mouths, that this song may be a witness for me against the children of Israel.

Being a person that is drawn to music and songs, this particular passage is bothersome. When I think of a song I think of a prayer… to me, songs are like prayers, not mere words, put to music to beautify and glorify the Lord. However, this song is a song of judgement and betrayal by the people that God loves. The people of God have betrayed God long before the crucifixtion and yet he loves us anyway. Much like, the prophet who was told to marry the prostitute and she kept betraying him. The people of God have a long history of prostitution. Lord forgive us.

  26. Leading a Lost People

23And he gave Joshua the son of Nun a charge, and said, Be strong and of a good courage: for thou shalt bring the children of Israel into the land which I sware unto them: and I will be with thee.

God had just told Moses all that was going to befall the people of Isreal, then he turns to Joshua and tells him, you are going to be in charge of these people. Talk about getting on an airplane that is going down. When reading this I thought to myself, If I was Joshua I might have said, you know God maybe Caleb should be blessed with this responsibility.
Joshua is a dynamic leader because he led, when he knew the end result. Many times as leaders we have an end game in our minds, I’m sure that Joshua did an end game of victory and blessing not of a scattered and backslidden people. But Joshua knew that no matter what victories were attained under his leadership, the end would not be a good one. yet he led anyway. Dedication to leading a lost people.

  27. Moses reminds the Israelites that posessing the promises of God is inexricably linked to reading, hearing, meditating on and obeying God’s Word. Moses knew that in the days ahead the people will face great obstacles and mundane daily tasks that will test their faith and stretch it to its very limits (also applies to us). But we are not alone, the key to posessing the source of wisdom, power and life itself -is actually in the Word of God. “Faith cometh by hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.” (Ro 10:17) Once we posess the promises of God’s Word we have to nurture it and grow with it. The Law’s purpose was to keep them within God’s boundaries in the play pen, til daddy comes home. If there’s one thing we’ve all experienced, it’s that “when I want to do good, evil is right with me.” (Ro 7:21). Deuteronomy teaches us that the law is “holy, righteous and good.” (Ro 7:12), but like the Israelites and we can’t keep it. We need help just like they did when they messed around and got conquered by other nations. Foreign spirits are out to conquer us too. So “Who will rescue us? ..Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Ro 7:24-25). The book of Deuteronony points us and them straight to Jesus, and they don’t even realize it…well yet anyway.

  28. 6Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

This is their promise if they love the Lord, but GOD knew that they would not stay true to HIM. HE knew the people would turn and love other gods and he was still wonderful to them. Moses warned the people and gave them a song so that they would know what would happen to them. It was another promise to them. If these promises were to come to me, I really hope that I am able to heed thier warnings and turn from what is going to happen before it occurs.
