Judges 3

1Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan;

2Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof;

3Namely, five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baalhermon unto the entering in of Hamath.

4And they were to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the LORD, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

5And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, Hittites, and Amorites, and Perizzites, and Hivites, and Jebusites:

6And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods.

7And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and forgat the LORD their God, and served Baalim and the groves.

8Therefore the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Chushanrishathaim eight years.

9And when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.

10And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the LORD delivered Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushanrishathaim.

11And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

12And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the LORD.

13And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek, and went and smote Israel, and possessed the city of palm trees.

14So the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.

15But when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Moab.

16But Ehud made him a dagger which had two edges, of a cubit length; and he did gird it under his raiment upon his right thigh.

17And he brought the present unto Eglon king of Moab: and Eglon was a very fat man.

18And when he had made an end to offer the present, he sent away the people that bare the present.

19But he himself turned again from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret errand unto thee, O king: who said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him.

20And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.

21And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly:

22And the haft also went in after the blade; and the fat closed upon the blade, so that he could not draw the dagger out of his belly; and the dirt came out.

23Then Ehud went forth through the porch, and shut the doors of the parlour upon him, and locked them.

24When he was gone out, his servants came; and when they saw that, behold, the doors of the parlour were locked, they said, Surely he covereth his feet in his summer chamber.

25And they tarried till they were ashamed: and, behold, he opened not the doors of the parlour; therefore they took a key, and opened them: and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.

26And Ehud escaped while they tarried, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped unto Seirath.

27And it came to pass, when he was come, that he blew a trumpet in the mountain of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mount, and he before them.

28And he said unto them, Follow after me: for the LORD hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over.

29And they slew of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, all lusty, and all men of valour; and there escaped not a man.

30So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest fourscore years.

31And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, which slew of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox goad: and he also delivered Israel.

  1. God delivered Israel a few times but they kept on worshippping other gods. God may not deliver us in the time that we want to but if we keep pressing forward and praying it will happen. Do we forget about God? No. Keep praying find an altar everyday that you can go to! and pray wholeheartedly and He will listen. I love the Lord for delivering me out of bondage when I received the Holy Ghost 10years ago.The best day of my life. I wasn’t bound by sin anymore. HALLELUJAH! !!!!! I give all my prayers and sins back to Him I’m sorry He already bore all our sins when He was crusified on the cross but He did that for us so that we can be with Him again. Thank you Jesus. I just realized this right now but when we sin we are crusifying Him all over again. But HE forgives us on a daily basis because He knows that we are not perfect we can try but we will never be perfect like Him. We wouldn’t have a MAGNIFICENT SAVIOUR like He is today. Well I appreciate Him and always will appreciate Him and I’m going to do everything in my power to live a Holy, sanctified life. Amen
    Have a Godblessed day.

  2. 1st time a man of God is recognized for being “left handed” and its such a cool fact to find in Scripture vs 15. In a right handed world the left handed have to conform to things being created for and from right handed people, so I understand why he made his own dagger. But as a fellow “lefty” I didnt understand why he would place it under his “right thigh” because we like placing things to our left. That is until I looked at the element of surprise as a key component.

In vs 7 the Israelites “forgot” God. Attracted by the by the gods of the people they failed to drive out of Canaan, they abandon the true God and serve the “Baals and Asherahs”. Its bad enough they forgot the One who miraculously delivered them rom slavery and provided them with a Homeland. But then, adding insult to injury, they begin to serve these phantom gods. Ancient Baal worshipers believed that their god was responsible for the fertility of the land, animals and people. Therefore Baal worshipers involved sexual fertility rites that suposedly induced the god to act. The worship of Asherah involved these similar lascivious activities. throughout their history, Israel is enticed to abandon the worship of the true God for these false gods. Bondage to false gods. Slavery and forced labor was nothing new to Israelites 1st its 400 yrs in Egypt now 8yrs with king of Aram Naharaim, then another 18yrs for the king of Moab. Each time, God raises up these Judges and calls them back, then offers them forgiveness and love (Ne 9:29-31). This true God, who cannot be seen or touched like some idol, but whose mercy and grace can be experienced by his people, offers grace to anyone who, instead of forgetting Him, remembers.

    “Nothing New Under the Sun”

Apparantly, What happened to Israel will happen to the false church as prophesied in the Book of Revelation.

(Revelation 17:5 KJV) And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.

(Revelation 17:9 KJV) And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.

ROME sits on 7 hills and each hill has a name; It is Rome that is the harlot and it is Rome who has placed and intermingled the customs of the Lord with the customs of the pagans…

LET’S JUST DO WHAT WE WANT TO DO….worship how we want to…PRATICE THE CUSTOMS WE WANT TO.

(1 Kings 12:28 KJV) Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

(1 Kings 12:29 KJV) And he set the one in Bethel, and the other put he in Dan.

(1 Kings 12:30 KJV) And this thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan.

(1 Kings 12:31 KJV) And he made an house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sons of Levi.

(1 Kings 12:32 KJV) And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Judah, and he offered upon the altar. So did he in Bethel, sacrificing unto the calves that he had made: and he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places which he had made.

(1 Kings 12:33 KJV) So he offered upon the altar which he had made in Bethel the fifteenth day of the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and ordained a feast unto the children of Israel: and he offered upon the altar, and burnt incense.

    • Thanks for that website bro, I was raised Catholic so I found it interesting and learned some stuff I was so ignorant about.

  4. 10. And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the LORD delivered Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushanrishathaim.

When we allow the Spirit of the LORD to come upon us and work through us, we can do great things for the Kingdom of God and we can prevail against our enemies.

    1 John 4:4
Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

  5. Pass the test the first time

4And they were to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the LORD, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

The children of Israel had traveled from Egypt to the border, but they still didn’t love him. He carries them 40 years through the wilderness, but they still didn’t love him. He gave them great lands, and cities, but they still didn’t love him.

Now Israel falls into the hands of the heathen nations around them, and the Lord allows them to be challenged by these philistines. All the while he is asking, do you love me or them?

They did many works but their heart was far from him.

We should take caution if we forget iPray, when iWork.

I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars: And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name’s sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted. Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent. (Revelation 2:2-5 KJV)

  6. ask and it shall be given unto you seek and ye shall find .how many times will God deliever his people out of bondage .his mercy is everlasting as long as his people ask .its when we stop asking is when we get into truble dont forget he does get mad at his people when they turn there backs on him . when GOD weeds you out some times you dont come back some times you die . the only unforgiven sin is a unrepented sin thats is why blasfliming is the unforgiven sin because at that point they are past repentance

  7. There is always a price to pay for disobedience. The people would do evil in the sight of the Lord and then God would punish them.God was and is merciful when they and we repent and cry out to him, but how much better it would be to just obey and not have to go through such trouble.

  8. 4And they were to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the LORD, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

Many times God will allow us to endure, so as we have oppertunity to prove to ourselves whom we trust and serve. These trials also grow us.

When Peter steped out of the boat, he did sink, but he also learned that he could trust Christ on a whole new level. He learned that even if he were sinking in sin fast as a rock in water, all he had to do is still reach for Jesus, and Jesus would come and save him.

Such is life for us, and as it was with Israeal. Whe n we cry out to Jesus, he rushes in to save us. He makes a way were there was no way.

  9. FORGOTTEN FAVOR

It appears to me that our generation deals with the same issues of FORGOTTEN FAVOR. Paul warned Timothy of this attitude in the last days that they would be unthankful: 2 Timothy 3:1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. 2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, The question in my mind as I studied the scripture this morning is “how could they forget”? Looking at the definition of the word brings understanding not only to their situation but also to our present day challenges.

Forgat – shakach – 1) to forget, ignore, wither
    2) to forget
    3) to cease to care

To ignore and To cease to care are 2 of the most immobilizing, lethargic, deadly attitudes of our day. What gives room for these to enter into the life of a believer? We find the answer in verse 6 And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods. (Marrying outside of the FAITH and tolerating the false gods of the people).

We must daily check our attitude to search for signs of “ignoring the laws of God or the I don’t care attitude”.

  10. 14So the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.
15But when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Moab.

    Rising up a new generation.

Isreal was under thisking for 18 years the Bible says. So it is safe to say that within that time Ehud was becoming on age. Alot of our children today do not know who to get intouch with God. It is our responsiblity to teach them and train them. This passage also shows us that God will not allow His ways to go. Even in the sinful nature that the Isrealites were in, God raised up someone to fight for the Children of Isreal.

  11. The Israelites discovered that relationships affect faith. The men and women of the surrounding nations were attractive to the Israelites. Soon they intermarried, and the Israelites accepted their pagan gods. This was clearly prohibited by God. By accepting these gods into their homes, the Israelites gradually began to accept the immoral practices associated with them. Most Israelites didn’t start out determined to be idolaters; they just added the idols to the worship of God, but before long they found themselves absorbed in pagan worship.

  12. 7 The LORD told Joshua, “Today I will begin to make you a great leader in the eyes of all the Israelites. They will know that I am with you, just as I was with Moses. NLT

we sometimes get in situations and God wants to see who we are going to serve and how we are handle the situation. if we pass the test the first time we go on thru if we fail the test we will be tested again. Our children are watching us how we handle a situation so we have to be careful. Just yesterday I got a text and it was hard not to have unforgiveness and unknowing to me Tiffany was watching and she ask me how can you forgive so quickly and forget about it? I thought thank you Jesus I handled that situation right……..we gotta be a light to the world they are watching how we handle and do things.

  13. vs 5-7 The Israelites as we have been reading in our book Intoxicated With Babylon were not just living in the world they became of the world. By serving false gods and becoming unequally yoked in marriage.

2Cor 6:14 “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?”

  14. We do not need to forget all God has done for us,we need to remind ourselves everyday and be thankful.A person that forgets what God has done for him, alot of times decides to go back out and try the world, they say to themselves it will just be a little while then they will go back to the church. But once you get out there satan will put you in bondage and keep you longer than you meant to stay.Only by God’s mercy ,and a lot of fight on your part ,that the bondage can be broken, sadly alot of people do not have enough fight in them to break that bondage.Stay in the church and God is there beside us when the battle is raging and we will come out with the Victory everytime.

  15. A footnote in gods kingdom

    31And after him was Shamgar

How many of us have ever heard someone preach on Shamgar? Or for that matter have ever heard of him? We hear stories of how Samson killed philistines but never Shamgar but he delivered his people if only for a little while. Many people want their names in lights or to be remembered for some great deed. I have never heard anyone pray God let me be like Shamgar.

“God Still Hears the Cry of the BackSlider”

Therefore the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Chushan–rishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Chushan–rishathaim eight years. And when the children of Israel cried unto the Lord, the Lord raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother. (Judges 3:8, 9 KJV)

    03573Chushan–rishathaim
    כּוּשַׁן רִשְׁעָתַיִם Kuwshan
    Proper Name Masculine
apparently from (03572) and the dual of (07564)
apparently from and the dual of ; Cushan of double wickedness; Cushan-Rishathajim, a Mesopotamian king:–Chushan-rishathayim.
    Chushan-rishathaim = “twice-wicked Cushan”
a king of Mesopotamia defeated by the judge Othniel.

The Children of Israel were delivered up to a “twice wicked” king.

When a person backslides, it becomes twice the bondage it once was and harder to be delivered.

When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out. Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. (Luke 11:24, 26 KJV)

BUT NO MATTER HOW MANY DEMONS OR HOW HARD IT MAY SEEM, GOD ALWAYS HEARS THE CRY OF HIS PEOPLE AND WILL DELIVER…JUST ASK THE MAN CALLED LEGION.

  17. 3:12Once again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord, and because they did this evil the Lord gave Eglon King of Moab power over Israel.
    — Deut.32:39 See now that I myself an he!
There is no God besides me.
I put to death and I bring to life,I have wounded and I will heal, and no one can deliver out of my hand.
2 Chronicals16:9 For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.
—You have done a foolish thing, and from now on you will be at war.
Whether we live in sin and we have to be discipline;or sometimes even punished; wether we live a righteous life and have a willing heart, and live for the glory of God.
“We are GOD’s children(chosen ones) and GOD is gonna do what he’s gonna do during the process…..
—Some of GOD’s children learn quick, others are stubborn and take more hardship to obey and learn GOD’s ways…….

  18. Even after the children of Israel sinned time after time you can still see the Lords mercy, love and compassion for His people. This should bring hope for the backsliders of Ft Worth that ARE on their way back home. In Jesus Name. POFW needs revival now!

The other thing that got me a little curious is why is the death of Elgon so detailed? I haven’t found anything yet. But if its in the bible you can be sure its important and the Lord is trying to convey something.

    • I hope this helps Phip.3:19
Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things .

Taking up HIS cross is never easy and people don’t like Truth Preached
We have to die to self and have faith like Ehud even though left handed means weak
” when we are weak HE is made strong”
We must not do way with HIS Cross.
      Remember that old song
      ” The Old Rugged Cross”
Let nothing separate us from the love of
      GOD. 🙂

  19. v10″ And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel , and went out to war and THE LORD DELIVERED”
( it’s not something we do. HE does it for us)
Praise GOD! In JESUS we move and have our being. It’s not by might nor by power but by His Spirit.

v11 ” And the land had rest forty years”
This tell me that when HIS Spirit comes upon us it makes all the difference in the world
There is a total complete rest for our souls
HE is everywhere .HE is bubbling over in our hearts.
Out of him shall flow rivers. You can be filled with the Holy Ghost!
iLove HIM. iLove my HOLY GHOST!
Be filled with HIS Spirit everyday

  20. God delivered the children of Israel into the hands of their enemy because they did evil. It is very important to always do what’s right. God will watch over his people and keep them out of harms way only if they obey his commandments and do good. The enemy will always try to decieve God’s people, but we must stand strong and hold fast to what is true.

  21. This chapter illustrates forgiveness. The Lord forgave Israel for the same sin more than once, just as the Lord will also forgive us for the same sin more than once. However we know not when our last breath will be, hence it would be wise to be full of the Holy Ghost and ready to meet Jesus before the time of forgiveness is no more. May the good Lord bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  22. God raised up a deliverer. No matter how to situation looks God always has a way of escape for his people. A left handed man of God was available to do Gods work and He wrought a mighty work thru him.

  23. Gensis 49: 27″ Benjamin shall ravin as a wolf: in the morning he shall devour the prey, and at night he shall divide the spoil.”

Ravin’ means to eat greedily, take food by violence and force.
Devour’ is to eat up and ‘Spoil’ is things taken by force.

Benjamites were known to be lift handed and great warriors. I believe this chapter was written in much detail because it was important for us to see the importance of being a warrior and jot just a hunter.

    Kenaz means hunter

Some would say there is no difference but hunters respect their prey they take what’s needed and leave the rest. Warriors on the other hand are violent, greedy, and honestly do not care about respecting its prey.

Kenaz being a hunter at heart left a door of opportunity open for sin to come in after his death. Ehud being the warrior went in with a plan, weapon in hand, and gutted the calf leaving nothing but the smell of dead prey.

God is looking for great warriors to stand for righteousness and violently take out the enemy.

    We are warriors!

  24. God’s mercy endureth forever, but his justice and judgment never fails.

Israel experienced both of these throughout the old testement

  25. These judges come in almost fictional heroes, righting wrongs and getting the bad guys and winning extraordinary victories. God has filled us born again believers with His Spirit, giving us power to be His witnesses; just as He empowered the judges to do great, even supernatural, things for Him, so has He given His church power to do those “greater works” and be His fully functional hands and feet in this world. God has filled us, it’s up to us to obey and go so He can use as He desires.

  26. 1Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan;

    2Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof;

What are we teaching our generation of children? Are we teaching them to love the things of God and the work of God, or are we teaching them that values and things of the world are more important. We are in essence teaching them to war, whether it be spirtiually or carnally. We must put the commandments and the statues of the Lord in them so if the Lord tarries there is a generation that will be able to lead strong in the truths of the Lord.

  27. 3Namely, five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baalhermon unto the entering in of Hamath.

I did research on the word entering and this is what I came to find…
The word entering is translated as (l”bo) with athing above the o. It says it may conceal the mane of a town, Lebo of Hamath, identified with modern Lebweh in the Beqa’a Valley, which seperates the Lebanon Mountains from the Anti-Lebanon ranges. This was Hivite territory during the period of the Judges.

  28. We will never learn. Seems we rely on God and then we forsake Him time after time. Yet a man comes along filled with Gods Spirit and kills 600 men with a stick. Never heard of Shamgar until now yet he was another Samson.Learn something new everytime we get into the Word

  29. Verses 5-6 in the MSG read…”But the People of Israel made themselves at home among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. They married their daughters and gave their own daughters to their sons in marriage. And they worshiped their gods.” We need to guard our hearts and not get so comfortable with the enemy that we don’t even notice we are falling.

  30. God’s Consistancy

Everytime the people did not follow God, He allowed them to be taken. Everytime the poeple called out to Him, he answered thier call. We should stive to be as consistant as God!
