1 Kings 16

1 Then the word of the Lord came to Jehu the son of Hanani against Baasha, saying,

Forasmuch as I exalted thee out of the dust, and made thee prince over my people Israel; and thou hast walked in the way of Jeroboam, and hast made my people Israel to sin, to provoke me to anger with their sins;

Behold, I will take away the posterity of Baasha, and the posterity of his house; and will make thy house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

Him that dieth of Baasha in the city shall the dogs eat; and him that dieth of his in the fields shall the fowls of the air eat.

Now the rest of the acts of Baasha, and what he did, and his might, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

So Baasha slept with his fathers, and was buried in Tirzah: and Elah his son reigned in his stead.

And also by the hand of the prophet Jehu the son of Hanani came the word of the Lord against Baasha, and against his house, even for all the evil that he did in the sight of the Lord, in provoking him to anger with the work of his hands, in being like the house of Jeroboam; and because he killed him.

In the twenty and sixth year of Asa king of Judah began Elah the son of Baasha to reign over Israel in Tirzah, two years.

And his servant Zimri, captain of half his chariots, conspired against him, as he was in Tirzah, drinking himself drunk in the house of Arza steward of his house in Tirzah.

10 And Zimri went in and smote him, and killed him, in the twenty and seventh year of Asa king of Judah, and reigned in his stead.

11 And it came to pass, when he began to reign, as soon as he sat on his throne, that he slew all the house of Baasha: he left him not one that pisseth against a wall, neither of his kinsfolks, nor of his friends.

12 Thus did Zimri destroy all the house of Baasha, according to the word of the Lord, which he spake against Baasha by Jehu the prophet.

13 For all the sins of Baasha, and the sins of Elah his son, by which they sinned, and by which they made Israel to sin, in provoking the Lord God of Israel to anger with their vanities.

14 Now the rest of the acts of Elah, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

15 In the twenty and seventh year of Asa king of Judah did Zimri reign seven days in Tirzah. And the people were encamped against Gibbethon, which belonged to the Philistines.

16 And the people that were encamped heard say, Zimri hath conspired, and hath also slain the king: wherefore all Israel made Omri, the captain of the host, king over Israel that day in the camp.

17 And Omri went up from Gibbethon, and all Israel with him, and they besieged Tirzah.

18 And it came to pass, when Zimri saw that the city was taken, that he went into the palace of the king’s house, and burnt the king’s house over him with fire, and died.

19 For his sins which he sinned in doing evil in the sight of the Lord, in walking in the way of Jeroboam, and in his sin which he did, to make Israel to sin.

20 Now the rest of the acts of Zimri, and his treason that he wrought, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

21 Then were the people of Israel divided into two parts: half of the people followed Tibni the son of Ginath, to make him king; and half followed Omri.

22 But the people that followed Omri prevailed against the people that followed Tibni the son of Ginath: so Tibni died, and Omri reigned.

23 In the thirty and first year of Asa king of Judah began Omri to reign over Israel, twelve years: six years reigned he in Tirzah.

24 And he bought the hill Samaria of Shemer for two talents of silver, and built on the hill, and called the name of the city which he built, after the name of Shemer, owner of the hill, Samaria.

25 But Omri wrought evil in the eyes of the Lord, and did worse than all that were before him.

26 For he walked in all the way of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and in his sin wherewith he made Israel to sin, to provoke the Lord God of Israel to anger with their vanities.

27 Now the rest of the acts of Omri which he did, and his might that he shewed, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

28 So Omri slept with his fathers, and was buried in Samaria: and Ahab his son reigned in his stead.

29 And in the thirty and eighth year of Asa king of Judah began Ahab the son of Omri to reign over Israel: and Ahab the son of Omri reigned over Israel in Samaria twenty and two years.

30 And Ahab the son of Omri did evil in the sight of the Lordabove all that were before him.

31 And it came to pass, as if it had been a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, that he took to wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Zidonians, and went and served Baal, and worshipped him.

32 And he reared up an altar for Baal in the house of Baal, which he had built in Samaria.

33 And Ahab made a grove; and Ahab did more to provoke the Lord God of Israel to anger than all the kings of Israel that were before him.

34 In his days did Hiel the Bethelite build Jericho: he laid the foundation thereof in Abiram his firstborn, and set up the gates thereof in his youngest son Segub, according to the word of the Lord, which he spake by Joshua the son of Nun.

  1. Each succeeding generation of kings gets worse and worse. Once again the example that the father sets is important. The son will most likely do worse. We must be Godly examples to our children.

    THE BAD SAMARITAN

And he bought the hill Samaria of Shemer for two talents of silver, and built on the hill, and called the name of the city which he built, after the name of Shemer, owner of the hill, Samaria. But Omri wrought evil in the eyes of the Lord, and did worse than all that were before him. (1 Kings 16:24, 25 KJV)

  3. I wonder if when all this kings that didn’t follow God were in power did they remember I Sam 8:

9 Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.

10 And Samuel told all the words of the Lord unto the people that asked of him a king.

11 And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run before his chariots.

12 And he will appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over fifties; and will set them to ear his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots.

13 And he will take your daughters to be confectionaries, and to be cooks, and to be bakers.

14 And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants.

15 And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.

16 And he will take your menservants, and your maidservants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work.

17 He will take the tenth of your sheep: and ye shall be his servants.

18 And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the Lord will not hear you in that day.

God will always warn you of what is to come, specially when we keep praying for something that He does not want in our lives. So listen to His word pay attention to the warnings and change your ways, for those who follow are watching.

  4. THE CHAMPION OF EVIL

30 And Ahab the son of Omri did evil in the sight of the Lordabove all that were before him.

We witness with each generation the compilation of evil; pride, selfishness and ego have now totally ruled the lives of the Leaders of Israel who are not only weakened by their own division are made even weaker by their disobedience.

The trickling morality of each generation is vivid and clear, it beomes more and more about self and fleshly pleasures, to the point where Ahab is now crowned THE CHAMPION OF EVIL.

    MSG
Ahab son of Omri did even more open evil before God than anyone yet—a new champion in evil! It wasn’t enough for him to copy the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat; no, he went all out, first by marrying Jezebel daughter of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians, and then by serving and worshiping the god Baal. He built a temple for Baal in Samaria, and then furnished it with an altar for Baal. Worse, he went on and built a shrine to the sacred whore Asherah. He made the God of Israel angrier than all the previous kings of Israel put together.

    EVIL leads to idol worship.

  5. 1 KINGS 16
1 Then the word of the Lord came to Jehu the son of Hanani against Baasha, saying,

    2 Forasmuch as I exalted thee out of the dust, and made thee prince over my people Israel; and thou hast walked in the way of Jeroboam, and hast made my people Israel to sin, to provoke me to anger with their sins;

3 Behold, I will take away the posterity of Baasha, and the posterity of his house; and will make thy house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
Where is the Love, Honor, Respect, the Fear of the Lord at? The Lord’s people have become cold and numb to His word. They have chosen to shut out any convictions, they have chosen to rebel. My heart breaks as I see His people dishonor him. When all that the Lord had shown us is His unconditional love. As it has been said many times ‘Grace isn’t a license to Sin’

    Proverbs 14:34
Righteousness exalteth a Nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.

  6. This chapter illustrates deterioration. Israel because of sinful leadership digressed further from the Lord with each king. The further away from the Lord they went, the worse off they became. God’s Word is full of examples of what happens if one departs from his ways, which the outcome is never good. The answer really is simple one can either live according to God’s Word and follow a God fearing leader and reap eternity with the Lord, or live according to the deceptions of this world and spend eternity with satan. May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  7. NLT 2 “I lifted you out of the dust to make you ruler of my people Israel, but you have followed the evil example of Jeroboam. You have provoked my anger by causing my people Israel to sin.

The kings continue to worship idols and not follow God. They continue to set the example of unrighteousness to their sons and daughters. The king, the father, the one in authority has a big influence on others. Once the example is set, others will follow.

  8. 21 Then were the people of Israel divided into two parts: half of the people followed Tibni the son of Ginath, to make him king; and half followed Omri.

22 But the people that followed Omri prevailed against the people that followed Tibni the son of Ginath: so Tibni died, and Omri reigned.

To truly get away from doublemindedness, something has to die. When we allow carnality to seep in, we will eventually choose it over God if we are not diligent to choose to kill the flesh first. We must die daily to self, we cannot afford to carry an evil “lineage” of sin from day to day like the passing of sinfulness in the line of kings that kept getting worse. Just as the anointing flows and increases downhill for those in submission, imagine a polluted river of wickedness that increases from those likewise downhill in submission.

I’ve heard it said how we’re all going to serve *somebody*, so why not choose to serve the Lord?

  9. What a sad chapter. One would think that someone next in line would open their eyes to see and break the evil curse. But, sadly the evil becomes more and more prominent with each generation. We have to heed these as warnings and follow the voice of the Lord. God will not tolerate sin.

Romans 6:23…”For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

    Out of Dust

    2 Forasmuch as I exalted thee out of the dust, and made thee prince over my people Israel; and thou hast walked in the way of Jeroboam, and hast made my people Israel to sin, to provoke me to anger with their sins;

Apparently at one time the king had been humble for the Word says “Forasmuch as I exalted thee out of the dust, and made thee prince…” The Word declares ” Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.) (James 4:6 KJV) also “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time”: (1 Peter 5:6 KJV).

The best way to be promoted is to be humble…the best way to go back to the way of the dust is to be prideful.

  11. Be careful what you do and what you let into your house physcially and spiritually. It will effect who all is around you including your kids. Our children are watching how us parents handle situations and everyday life. My prayer is that I am a light to my children and not a bad influence.

  12. I can’t help but go back and remember the Lord’s words to Solomon,” If you keep my commandments….” As we know Solomon turned from God and now the generations after him are in sin. Our actions will effect generations.

  13. Thank you Bro. Northcutt. Before reading this chapter I was telling my wife the kings of Isreal are like a church that sets no example for the young people. Each generation will get further and further away fom Hod until like he did with Isreal, God will grow silent. Let’s instill in our future generations a love of God. A desire as David had to destroy the enemies of God. To not let sin be an excuse to begat sin instead when we fall for it to give us a greater desire to live for God.

  14. “walked in the footsteps of Jeroboam”

It is amazing that on man, Jeroboam, had an opportunity to live a life for God, and leave a legacy that would have set the course for an entire nation. He was so influential, but because he set up false idols to worship, golden calves, he caused for Israel to sin, and injected something into their society that did not leave.

Our legacy is so important. Jeroboam may have thought that his actions did not affect anyone but him, but the truth is that it set the course for the downfall of many great kings.

Sometimes God places people in position to carry the torch, be a pillar, or keep the field until someone comes along that God is preparing to use. Our elders were those who prepared the path, and blazed the trails so that we could carry this great gospel into the streets of America.

The legacy we leave is the gospel the next generations will follow. Let us make sure that the “cross” is the legacy of this generation.

  15. It amazes me that during this time Judah is being ruled by one king yet the rest of israel is going through kings left and right. Judah is being ruled by a righteous ruler and God allows him to sit on the throne for years while Israels kings are living rebellious and wicked lives and they are either dying or being murdered after a short reign. One would think someone would catch on to this pattern and be like I know sin is fun but I want to live so this has got to change but noooooo they just keep getting worse. Sin blinds us to see the good, thank God for the blood of Jesus that washes away sin and removes scales from our eyes. There is nothing that is so much fun and satisfying that its worth our lives, souls, and our children.

  16. Wow GOD must really be sick with all this sinning. LORD… Please up root every Jeroboam very Omri,Ahab,Jezebel every thing that’s not of you LORD from our hearts.

Today satan is still detouring men from
    SIMPLY OBEYING GODS WORD!
As he did with Adam & Eve.
This tells me I must put GOD’S amour on every day and praying Always. Spiritual warfare still exist between humanity and satan.

If we disobey GOD we are responsible for the judgment that follows.
When GOD says something HE means what HE says….. Gal.6:7″ For whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”

Our GOD is JESUS and HIM only shall you worship only. If you’re really going to worship JESUS, they ought to to see JESUS IN
you (me ). ” HE must increase i must decrease”

Hosea 9:10 says.. You become like what you worship. If you worship something or someone that’s cold, dead, dumb no hope and shameful

Or worship JESUS ALL POWERFUL FULL OF LOVE , MERCY AND COMPASSION.

  17. We all start off good as did Asa,he was in communion with God .But after 35 years as king he began to weaken. At first I admired Asa but did a little more research and found he was only human. The word says”Those who endure till the end shall be saved.”

  18. What a chapter!

Sin is a progressive and a aggressive consumer of all that is good. It separates families, friends and most of all us from the Lord.

As each generation moves away from the Lord the worst the condition of sin.

  19. Without God the people get worse & worse. Evil doings get greater with each son that takes the throne. Now comes Ahab-the worst yet. And it all starts with Solomons falling away-then the next generation becomes A Godless people. We must teach this gospel to our kids & grandiose and then keep living it before them till we die, or until the Lord returns!

  20. Get a Pure and Submitted Heart

There’s so much sin and death with the kings of Israel and at the sometime Judah still has the prefect hearted King Asa. A pure and submitted heart will always lead you to anointed praise and a life of harmony.

Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice! Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon.
Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you. (Philippians 4:4-9 NLT)

  21. It is evident by the chapters we have been reading the past few days, that the Lord is angered when we do what is right in our own sight, and not follow His commandments and ways. Each king who reigned in this chapter pleased theirselves. They were not concerned about getting Israel back to God, they were selfish in their own desires.

We clearly see that each generation is becoming more and more selfish in their desires. I want to pass a legacy onto the generations to come after me of truth and righteousness.

Duetoronomy 6: 7-8 7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. 8 And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.

  22. Whew cooking Pico with the Lord tonight. JESUS is here with me. Being a light to the family and their friends Mormons but they are very clean in they’re hearts.

  23. 32 And he reared up an altar for Baal in the house of Baal, which he had built in Samaria.
33 And Ahab made a grove; and Ahab did more to provoke the Lord God of Israel to anger than all the kings of Israel that were before him.

How many times do we set things up to take precedence over God’s work? We must be careful that we don’t set up Baals in our own lives. There is only 1 God.

  24. 21 Then were the people of Israel divided into two parts: half of the people followed Tibni the son of Ginath, to make him king; and half followed Omri.
22 But the people that followed Omri prevailed against the people that followed Tibni the son of Ginath: so Tibni died, and Omri reigned.

The quote,”A house devided against itself cannot stand,” comes to mind. There needs to be unity in our families and in our friendships in order to be successful. If there was never any unity there would not be any world, because without unity we are all enemies. I have often wondered what could happen if the church body, not just our church, but the whole state to state, city with city. What could happen in our world?

  25. And Ahab made a grove; and Ahab did more to provoke the Lord God of Israel to anger than all the kings of Israel that were before him. (1 Kings 16:33 KJV)

Why would you prevoke someone to anger? If you know what your doing is wrong you shouldn’t be immature and continually do those things.

“life is hard, but it’s harder when your stupid”

  26. We do have a merciful God. He didn’t destroy us when He had every reason to. It looks like these Kings were really testing God. Were they ignorant to Gods commandments or just defiant?
For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. (Romans 10:3 KJV)
And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God? (1 Samuel 17:26 KJV)

  27. What does it take to find a man that will do the right thing? It seems that they are searching and appointing and coming up short when Isreal gets a new King. The Kings are testing Gods mercy.
Yet they tempted and provoked the most high God, and kept not his testimonies: (Psalm 78:56 KJV)
How does sin yet blind you of Gods power? How did they defy God so much generation after generation. Just because your Daddy did it that way doesn’t make it right. People settle to be like there predecessor even when their predecessor had it all wrong.
The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: every man shall be put to death for his own sin. (Deuteronomy 24:16 KJV)

  28. King’s continue to disobey God, the Lord doesn’t forget who worships idol’s. God is a jealous God. He has a plan for each one of us, Lord let your angels surrond me and family protect us from all enemy.

  29. If this is my legacy I might want to be forgotten.

33 And Ahab made a grove; and Ahab did more to provoke the Lord God of Israel to anger than all the kings of Israel that were before him

We should all learn from this and follow God with pur whole heart.

  30. 34 In his days did Hiel the Bethelite build Jericho: he laid the foundation thereof in Abiram his firstborn, and set up the gates thereof in his youngest son Segub, according to the word of the Lord, which he spake by Joshua the son of Nun.

Ahab commited outright defiance to the Lord on every scale, and still didn’t care the consequences. Narcism, I believe is shown here, ‘let the whole world fall apart, as long as I get what I what’ attitude. At what point could a creation of God just not care if it costed him his first born son ‘Abiram’? I can only imagine his thought to be from ‘the liar’ himself ..”nah, your son really wont die.” or that it would be a ‘sacrifice’ to their gods. Either way they where deliberate and provoking God’s anger which is a terrible side to be on. But he didn’t stop there he actually put up the gates of Jericho and it cost him his youngest son Segub! thus, fulfilling Joshua’s curse (Jos 6:26). Its surprising how far people will go to satisfy themselves and ignore God’s authority. He must have been possessed by all kinds of ugly spirits in respect to his behavior. While he was defying the Lord, God was making an example of him. You know kind of like on plastic bags their is a warning sign saying not to let children get ahold of it ‘cuz they could sufficate themselves. God knew someone was going to be stupid enough to try and pull off rebuilding Jericho a place where pagan worshipers thrived. Sounds alot like Babel, God didn’t want people to build a tower building to defy him. It was God’s desire that Jericho remain a ruin for a reason, and you don’t tamper with the Word of God.

  31. 30 And Ahab the son of Omri did evil in the sight of the Lordabove all that were before him.

    Third degree sins…
Wow after thinking that we had hear and seen it all we see Ahab actually managing to sin worse than all those before him! And if that had not been enough he was foolish enough to marry Jezebel!!

  32. Each generation seems to birth the same spirit of pride and disobedience. God is looking for a king that will step out and follow him.
