1 Corinthians 14

1 Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.

2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.

4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.

5 I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.

6 Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?

7 And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?

8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?

9 So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.

10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification.

11 Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me.

12 Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.

13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.

14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.

15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

16 Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?

17 For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.

18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:

19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.

20 Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.

21 In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.

22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.

23 If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?

24 But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all:

25 And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.

26 How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.

27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.

28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.

29 Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.

30 If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.

31 For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.

32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.

33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

34 Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law.

35 And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.

36 What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only?

37 If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.

38 But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.

39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.

40 Let all things be done decently and in order.

  1. Thanking The Lord for the prophets that POFW has!!!

But one who prophesies strengthens others, encourages them, and comforts them. A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally, but one who speaks a word of prophecy strengthens the entire church. (‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭14‬:‭3-4‬ NLT)

It’s always a pleasure to hear the prophets that can speak into the lives/body of Christ! To GOD only be ALL the GLORY!!!

For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.

  2. 2. For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

    15. What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

He is not saying to do one or the other all the time, but both have their time and purpose, so use common sense and do each at the appropriate time.

  3. 37 If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.
38 But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.

The first qualification to becoming a spiritual being is understanding the law of tongues and time of worship in the congregation. These are the commandments of God, they are to be obeyed and understood by those that are spiritual. Yes we should talk in tongues for our on edification and pray in the spirit with great travail and supplication. We should also sing in the spirit with edification to the church and ourselves, but this should be done decent and in order.
All this should be self explanatory, but if a man be ignorant of this let him be ignorant.

  4. Verses 1-3 MSG “Go after a life of love as if your life depended on it—because it does. Give yourselves to the gifts God gives you. Most of all, try to proclaim his truth. If you praise him in the private language of tongues, God understands you but no one else does, for you are sharing intimacies just between you and him. But when you proclaim his truth in everyday speech, you’re letting others in on the truth so that they can grow and be strong and experience his presence with you.” Same verses AMP “Eagerly pursue and seek to acquire [this] love [make it your aim, your great quest]; and earnestly desire and cultivate the spiritual endowments (gifts), especially that you may prophesy ([a]interpret the divine will and purpose in inspired preaching and teaching). For one who speaks in an [unknown] tongue speaks not to men but to God, for no one understands or catches his meaning, because in the [Holy] Spirit he utters secret truths and hidden things [not obvious to the understanding]. But [on the other hand], the one who prophesies [who [b]interprets the divine will and purpose in inspired preaching and teaching] speaks to men for their upbuilding and constructive spiritual progress and encouragement and consolation.” We must be sensitive and give ourselves to the gifts God gives us. For it is not only about us and what we can get or gain; but, about reaching others with God’s truth and love.

  5. 8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?

praise the Lord for a pastor that listens to God and teaches us to prepare for spiritual battle.

  6. 12 Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.

Spiritual gifts are great and necessary however they are not for us alone. When we desire after gifts of the spirits we need to check our own motive and spirit to ensure we are not after them for glory for ourselves but to help build up and edify the body of Christ.

  7. But if anyone is ignorant, let him be ignorant. Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak with tongues. Let all things be done decently and in order. (‭I Corinthians‬ ‭14‬:‭38-40‬ NKJV)

  8. 22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.

A lot of people don’t think speaking in tongues is for today but God says He is the same yesterday, today, and for ever. Therefore, what is good for the church back then still good for the church today. For those of you who think tongue speaking should only be done with interpretation that’s not right for in this verse it is clearly explained that’s it is done for the benefit of the nonbeliever, while prophesy is done to edify the church.

  9. MORE HOLY GHOST

18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:

The Apostle Paul is giving instruction to the church in regards to Spiritual Gifts. While addressing the gifts of the Spirit he reminds us that there is confusion in the church if there are not words spoken that give specific instructions to the body. In other words; if the preacher stands in the pulpit and only speaks in tongues for the duration of the sermon, the body of Christ is not edified, because only GOD and the speaker are glorified through the gift of the Spirit. Therefore it is more productive to the body of Christ for the Minister to prophesy than to only speak with tongues.

This is where religious confusion comes in through deception. The demoninal world suggests that it is wrong to speak in tongues at all. However, the apostle dresses this deceptive false doctrine head on so that there is no confusion, saying:

    MSG
18 I’m grateful to God for the gift of praying in tongues that he gives us for praising him, which leads to wonderful intimacies we enjoy with him. I enter into this as much or more than any of you.

What a Spiritual challenge that we may say to each other “I thank my GOD, I speak in tongues more than you all”

    Seek MORE GOD
    Seek MORE Kingdom
    Seek MORE Holy Ghost

  10. So here’s what I want you to do. When you gather for worship, each one of you be prepared with something that will be useful for all: Sing a hymn, teach a lesson, tell a story, lead a prayer, provide an insight.  (‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭14‬:‭26 MSG)

I think we could accomplish MORE when we come to church with this mindset. The mindset of giving instead of receiving blessings. Let’s give MORE.

It is MORE blessed to give than to receive. Acts 20:35

  11. “What should you do then, brothers and sisters? When you come together, each one has a song, has a lesson, has a revelation, has a tongue, has an interpretation. Let all these things be done for the strengthening of the church.” 1 Corinthians 14:26 (NET)

We need everyone at every service! Everyone has a job to do! If you’re not there then the burden falls on the rest. Yet if we are all there and doing our job we are strengthening and building up of the church! Thank God we all have different talents and abilities!

  12. 18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:

19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.

This verse is so misinterpreted by the denominal churches to say that we shouldn’t speak in tongues, but in looking closer we see that he is giving instruction on the proper use of tongues spoken to the body in a church service. In verse 18 & 19, he clarifies his instructions showing that speaking in tongues is not to be forbidden, then explains how it is to be done to edify. Praise God for those that prophesy and edify the church! It is the greatest gift to desire. He also says for those who speak in tongues to the church to pray that they can also be the one to interpret. Thank God the gifts of the spirit to profit us all!

  13. 26 So here’s what I want you to do. When you gather for worship, each one of you be prepared with something that will be useful for all: Sing a hymn, teach a lesson, tell a story, lead a prayer, provide an insight. 27 If prayers are offered in tongues, two or three’s the limit, and then only if someone is present who can interpret what you’re saying MSG

When we gather to worship God leave your troubles outside the church and let’s focus in accord and in unity and see what God has in store for us. You never know who is sitting beside you that needs God’s touch. If we come in with bad attitude we could be the one stopping the flow of the Holy Ghost. God help us not to be the stumbling block for a lost soul.

  14. iLove to eat More Word

    More Desire
1 Corinthians 14:1 “Let love be your highest goal! But you should also desire the special abilities the Spirit gives—especially the ability to prophesy.”

    “desire spiritual gifts”
    Desire #G2206
    ζηλόω
    zēloō
    dzay-lo’-o
From G2205; to have warmth of feeling for or against: – affect, covet (earnestly), (have) desire, (move with) envy, be jealous over, (be) zealous (-ly affect).
    Total KJV occurrences: 12

The word “desire” has basically the same meaning in the Greek as it does in the English language…it means you want something.

Is it wrong for the saints to want spiritual gifts? Paul is encouraging the saints of the church to desire spiritual gifts.

1 Corinthians 14:39 “Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.”

Paul goes as far as to tell us to “covet” to prophesy.

MORE DESIRE for Spiritual gifts is not us being selfish, but is exactly what we need to build His Kingdom.

  15. 7 And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?

8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?

What sound are we giving off to those around us? We must be clear and concise in our daily walk so that our example, our speech, our actions give off a sound of #1 that Jesus is King in our lives, and we are about His Kingdom and #2 that we are striving in every manner to be Christ-like. We are the only Bible that some people read and if we are responding to things in an un-christlike manner, we are not giving a clear sound to those watching our lives.

  16. This chapter has been the topic of many debates on whether or not speaking in tongues in the church is in order or not. Here is how it is revealed to me:
When the Spirit of the Lord comes down I I a place filled with those that are so hungry for it and so desperate for it, it takes them over. It is like a woman says about her husband … He swept me off my feet and I was head over heels in love. This is how we should love Christ. He is or husband and we are his bride. So when the husband comes to visit the bride she should be overwhelmed with his love toward her and hers toward him. It is the most intamant part of worship when he sees his bride travailing after him and he comes to visit her. Now we being overwhelmed by the spirit of God are not helping a one else around us but it can raise the faith level in the church. I notice when we all trevail in the spirit together there is a holy manifestation that sets among us. Like on Saturday night prayer service. When this happens it’s all about you and God. The thing is, he loves us all individually and corporately. Our trevail in the spirit just lets him know we are ready for a visit. We have had the holy hush. This is when God is getting ready to speak. Everyone is travailing on high and the spirit is moving and everything comes to a still place. Everyone knows in their spirit that the Lord is about to impart. This is where the tongues and interpretation are seen. God
Gives one tongue and one interpretation for the church. All these things are done in order.
One is because we are under the covering of the Pastor that has authotity over the service. The second is when God is ready to speak we all yield. If we didn’t yeid to God it would not be in order. If we didn’t submit to the authority of the Pastor when he speaks to all be quiet and listen then it would not be in order. I thank God that I speak in tongues everyday and that he visits me in my trevail.

  17. 1 Let love be your highest goal! But you should also desire the special abilities the Spirit gives—especially the ability to prophesy.
2 For if you have the ability to speak in tongues, you will be talking only to God, since people won’t be able to understand you. You will be speaking by the power of the Spirit, but it will all be mysterious.
3 But one who prophesies strengthens others, encourages them, and comforts them.
4 A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally, but one who speaks a word of prophecy strengthens the entire church. (NLT)

Thank God for the Holy Ghost and the opportunity to have relationship with Him! A daily relationship with Him will not only strengthen us, but we then can use our strength to strengthen and encourage others.

  18. 1 Cor. 14:1-4 (NLT)
Let love be your highest goal! But you should also desire the special abilities the Spirit gives – especially the ability to prophecy. For if you have the ability to speak in tongues, you will be talking only to God, since people won’t be able to understand you. You will be speaking by the power of the Spirit, but it will all be mysterious. But one who prophesies strengthens others, encourages them, and comforts them. A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally, but one who speaks a word of prophecy strengthens the entire church.

    MORE Love!
MORE Prophecy to strengthen others, encourage others, and comfort others!

  19. 1corinthians 14:26 what then shall we say brothers and sisters? When you come together each of you has a hymn or a word of instruction a revelation. Everything must be done so that the church may be built up.

  20. Commandments !!!! 37. If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord. 2 Cor. 10 : 7 38. But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant. 39. Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues. 1 Cor. 12 : 31 40. Let all things be done decently and in order. 1Cor. 14 : 33 Praise ye the Lord !!!! You are the lifter of my head !!!! You are my hope !!!!

  21. Exegetical Insight – Word study

Now I want you all to “speak” in tongues, but xeven more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up. (1 Cor 14:5)

The Greek word for speak in this text is λαλεῖν. This verb is in the Present Active Infinitive. The infinitive mood implies a continuous action. Paul is not merely stating that I want you to speak in tongues but more so I want you to continue speaking in tongues.

The Corinthians would have placed tongues above prophecy in gifts, but Paul stresses the opposite. He continually praises the gift of tongues, but in this case he challenges a church that operates in tongues excessively to either have it interpreted in corporate worship or to prophesy. Paul mentions later in the text that he is thankful that he prays in tongues more than them all. There is no question about it. Paul spoke in tongues in his prayer life.

  22. 26 How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.

Amen! Everything you do that it may be for a benefit for yourself or your brethren. Whatever you may say that it may be good and only to edify.
9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. 11 Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? 12 My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.
Help me Jesus say and do things that are only edifying! Guide me Jesus in everythig I do!

  23. So, pray that we would prophesy or the ability to interpret tongues. This is for the sake of the unlearned or the lost……..Best they have understanding.

5 I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.

  24. For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

Thank Hod for his peace. The peace that passes all understanding. There have been many times in my life where I have felt this peace. It is like nothing else. God is so good.

  25. 33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

Chaos and confusion is something created by the devil when he rebelled against God and decided to oppose, it’s one of the many tricks he uses in our lives to try and derail us from living for God. God doesn’t want us being confused, he wants to be of a clear and sound mind, so if you end up in a place of confusion, you will know why.

Psalms 71:1 In thee O Lord do I put my trust, let me never be put to confusion.

  26. 40 Let all things be done decently and in order
This scripture speaks volumes we need to make sure In every thing we do is done in a decent manner.I know

  27. “Let all things be done decently and in order.” Paul, chosen by God (Jesus) was teaching order and discipline, where there was none. Therefore one would be wise to recognize that the man of God is also appointed and anointed by God too do likewise. As such one would be wise to listen. What a mighty God we serve! Thank God for his word. God bless America, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  28. v40 Let all things be done decently and in order.

Church services should not be like watching a performance, but always orderly. Church service should be for edifiying the church.

” Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts” Colossians 3:16

  29. Leadership 101: Don’t Be A Barbarian

8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?

11 Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me.

One of the most fundamental parts, yet ongoing area in need of development, of effective leadership is effective communication.

    Romans 10:14
How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

Likewise: “How then shall they follow what they do not know? and how shall they fellow if they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a leader?”

If we are not communicating clearly with those we lead, we are becoming the “barbarian leader” who not only will fail to give clear direction, but we will likely be prone to taking it out on the followers who become the rebellious “barbarians” in not doing what we wanted. After all, we told them what we wanted… right?

One safe guard to being the “barbarian leader” is to make it a priority to be the approachable leader. If those we lead feel the door is open for them to communicate back to us to ask for clarification or alert us to our failed communication, we have the opportunity to make things right before a much larger issue occurs. If we do not allow that line of communication to be open both ways, we will fall prey to being the barbarian leader and may even write off those we lead as barbarians in the process.

Communication is most effective when a level of relationship is involved. “Communicate” has it’s root in “commune,” implying the meaning “common; known by being together.” The greater the level of relationship, the better opportunity to communicate. The Lord gave His Word to us to communicate even to a fallen mankind who start out with no relationship with Him, yet when we do come to Him, we are called to not just know *of* Him but have active relationship with Him, or *communion.*

This level of relationship demands communication—prayer and reading the Word—which results in the opportunity for God to effectively lead us. His call to “come and follow Me” targets this process right up front. We can extend this in our approach to those we lead, to understand it is not enough to simply speak but we must do so as Christ, combining the intertwined qualities of communication with love.

    1 Corinthians 13:1 AMP
If I [can] speak in the tongues of men and [even] of angels, but have not love (that reasoning, intentional, spiritual devotion such [a]as is inspired by God’s love for and in us), I am only a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

A noisy gong or clanging cymbal has the distinct property of having an unclear sound. A clarion is a shrill, narrow-tubed war trumpet, whose auditory quality has caused it’s name to be also leant to the abstract meaning “loud and clear.” A gong or cymbal can certainly be loud, but it’s crashing reverberation is not clear. Just as being a leader, we can scream as loud as we want to those who follow, but without the clear communication that comes only by love, we cannot effectively give the clarion trumpet’s call to battle.

    Ephesians 4:15
But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ

  30. 40 Let all things be done decently and in order.

Thank God for his order. He has established the Heavens and the Earth .
All of creation has an order. The Sun, Moon and Stars all have their courses.

The same holds true for the spirit realm.

    Thank God for his plan!

  31. Grow more in the Lord.

1 Corinthians 14:20 Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.

We must be mature in our knowledge of God and his kingdom. God does not expect us to be always as children, but is calling us to maturity in the faith and the things of the Kingdom of God. We are to study to show ourselves approved. We are to study the scriptures and know Him, our Lord Jesus. We need to be able to take solid food from the word of God. We should recognize that His Word is sharper than a two edged sword. We can be letting things offend us. The great peace have they which love thy law and nothing shall offend them. To love the law we must grow in the knowledge of it and mature in his statutes and precepts and commandments.

  32. 7 And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped? B.

God likes order, it pleases him when we praise and worship him with all of our heart and soul.

  33. 17 For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.

What this scripture tells me is that God said to his disciples that you are giving thanks well enough, but no one else is improved greatfulness upon the world. We should have greatfulness for what we do for are God whenever he commands us to do something for him and we should finish the job strong !! In jesus name !!!
