Acts 12

1 Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church.

2 And he killed James the brother of John with the sword.

3 And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.)

4 And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people.

5 Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.

6 And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison.

7 And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.

8 And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me.

9 And he went out, and followed him; and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision.

10 When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him.

11 And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.

12 And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying.

13 And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a damsel came to hearken, named Rhoda.

14 And when she knew Peter’s voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told how Peter stood before the gate.

15 And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel.

16 But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished.

17 But he, beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Go shew these things unto James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went into another place.

18 Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers, what was become of Peter.

19 And when Herod had sought for him, and found him not, he examined the keepers, and commanded that they should be put to death. And he went down from Judaea to Caesarea, and there abode.

20 And Herod was highly displeased with them of Tyre and Sidon: but they came with one accord to him, and, having made Blastus the king’s chamberlain their friend, desired peace; because their country was nourished by the king’s country.

21 And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them.

22 And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man.

23 And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.

24 But the word of God grew and multiplied.

25 And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem, when they had fulfilled their ministry, and took with them John, whose surname was Mark.

  2. The POWER of PRAYER!!🙏

All the time that Peter was under heavy guard in the jailhouse, the church prayed for him most strenuously. (‭Acts‬ ‭12‬:‭5‬ MSG)

Prayer an important role in every Christian life. It’s a daily communication between GOD and you. When you pray, your circumstances can change. Never underestimate the power of prayer. In prayer you can plead the blood of Jesus over your day, over your family. It’ll give you the victory and keep you safe!
We as the church are called to pray. Not when it’s convenient or once a week, but daily.

I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting. (‭1 Timothy‬ ‭2‬:‭8‬ KJV)
Praise GOD! An angel of The Lord was sent out to Peter, all because all stoped doing what they were doing, and prayed.
It’s the power that was given to us as well.
To ask of The Lord to send forth angels to do what The Lord has intended for them to do. It’s important to ask The Lord to send them out with your family daily. We have the ability to change things for our good, as long as we keep praying.

    Pray without ceasing. (‭1 Thessalonians‬ ‭5‬:‭17‬ KJV)

    In JESUS name!!!!

Herod was persecuting the church, because the Jews hated Jesus. There has always been those that persecuted the church and always will be.
The end of Herod’s life is told at the end of the chapter, because he gave not God the glory. God will keep his hand on his people,

  4. Acts 12:5, 7, & 11
    5) Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.
    7) And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.
    11) And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.”

Ps. 34:7, “The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.
Heb. 1:14, “Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?”

Thank You JESUS for intercessory prayer warriors and for ministering angels that are sent by God to encamp around about us and to deliver us and help us in our time of need.

  5. 5 Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.

    Romans 1:9
    For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers;

    1 Samuel 12:23
Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should sin against the Lord in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way:

    1 Thessalonians 5:17
    Pray without ceasing.

    2 Timothy 1:3
    I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day;

If the word says it more then once, we might want to listen! Pray without ceasing!

  6. Here is Peter in a prison cell the night before his trial. He’s between two soldiers, bound with two chains, with sentries standing guard at the entrance— and Peter is sleeping(Acts 12:1-6) The only way you can sleep in a storm is by realizing that God is with you. Isaiah said:
You will keep in perfect peace with him whose mind is steadfast, because he trust in you.
    Isaiah 26:3

  7. In vs. 23 is what caught my eye. When the Angel of the Lord smote him, because he did not give glory to God.
We need to be careful, when God gives us a gift be sure not to take credit for the move of God in our presence just because we were moved by God to say or do something.
Always stop and Give God Glory for without him we can do nothing and without him we are nothing. Best thing to do is just give Glory to God for everything. To the littlest thing to the biggest. Glory to God for it all.

  8. Sleeping in the time of crisis.

How does one sleep when the world is falling apart? How did Peter sleep between two guards while being chained to them; knowing what the next day would bring? I believe it was Peter’s faith. Peter knew the Lord would provide. History is filled with the provisions of the Lord; just in time. There was no apparent reason God would not be there for Peter in this time of need.

Recently, my world was turned up-side down. People around me were upset, distraught and worried until sleep would not come for them. However, I felt the peace that passes all understanding about the situation and slept the full night. I tried to relay my faith in the Lord concerning the matter but the words fell on deaf ears. After the “new-ness” of the bad news wore off, people were able to resume with their normal daily lives. I believe this comes with maturity and experience.

  9. A have a dream….

9 And he went out, and followed him; and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision.

Where do your visions take you? Do they take you to the next level or are they content with where your at?
I can somewhat understand Peters perspective because every time I go out to the new land. It doesn’t seem real. We have talked about it for so long and have dreamed about it. But now it’s coming to pass. Now it’s real. Now we are building. Now we have land. Now the vision is taking root of reality.
But the question still is, why are your dreams not coming to pass. We all have had dreams about what we would do in our lives or what we would do for God. But why don’t we see them coming to pass?
Is it the lack of passion to see it come to pass? Is it the things of life that hinder us? Is it fear?
God hath not given us the spirit of fear , but power, love ,and a sound mind.
When our visions take root and become reality. As Bishop Foster would say,”WOW!” You have to see the vision to believe in it. So look around and see what God is doing.

  10. 3 And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also.

Be careful of being a “man-pleaser”. The King did what he thought was good in the eyes of the people by killing James, and capturing Peter to do the same. However, the people of God united together and prayer was made, and angel was sent to deliver Peter from the prison he was in.

Our country has just accepted what 9 judges have said is ok. They have responded to what a group of people wants, instead of what the principles of the Word of God states, which this country was founded upon. However, if the people of truth will unite in prayer, and stand up against this spirit in prayer, God can deliver our nation from those that want to please the carnal nature of this world, instead of the God that created this world.

    2 Chronicles 7:14
If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

  11. 15 And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel.

Typical of the church, not to believe until seen with our own eyes!!! Why not just believe!?! Wasn’t that their request???
We MUST BELIEVE that GOD will do IT!!!
THAT SURELY HAD TO HAVE GROWN THEIR FAITH.
    JESUS HELP US!!!

  12. 3 And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.)

Herod was not worried about what God thought he was only trying to please the people. What he didn’t know was our God sees and knows all!! Be carful in who your trying to please.

5 Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.

When Peter was put in prison the church did not just stand there, but they rose up and began to pray as one, and mighty things began to happen. There is power in our prayer!!

  13. iLove to eat More Word

They passed the first and second guard posts and came to the iron gate leading to the city, and this opened for them all by itself. So they passed through and started walking down the street, and then the angel suddenly left him. (‭Acts of the Apostles‬ ‭12‬:‭10‬ NLT)

The Absolute power of God is revealed through this angel leading Peter past garrisons of guards, his chains falling off, and the huge gates opening of their own accord.

Wow, why are we so fearful of men and circumstances in life. As long as are led by the Holy Ghost, there is not anything that is impossible with God.

  14. 9 So Peter left the cell, following the angel. But all the time he thought it was a vision. He didn’t realize it was actually happening.

11 Peter finally came to his senses. “It’s really true!” he said. “The Lord has sent his angel and saved me from Herod and from what the Jewish leaders had planned to do to me!” (NLT)

Even when we don’t realize what’s happening, or why things are happening, are we still obedient like Peter was? Maybe God is trying to lead you out of your problems, just like He did for Peter, and you may not realize what’s really happening. But if we obey, God has freedom, joy, peace and blessings for us.

Remember all that we endure, good or bad, is to the glory of God; whatever we go through becomes a part of our testimony – how will your story end? Obey God and He will bring you out with a mighty testimony that will one day touch someone else’s life.

  15. MORE OPEN DOORS

10 When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him.

A CHURCH that PRAYS earnestly and passionately can open MORE DOORS and GATES than we can imagine. We have loved ones that are locked up in their thinking or theology, possibly even bound by the sins or strongholds of this world and its systems.

The LORD is speaking even right now to people that are locked up in their Spiritual Life and they are coming out of prisons and dungeons that have had them bound for years.

We must be prepared for MORE OPEN DOORS of Revival. Not only will JESUS present us MORE OPEN DOORS. The Church must present the believers, those delivered MORE OPEN DOORS when they come knocking.

    John 14:13″

v14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

Our GREAT GOD NEVER FAILS and HE IS STILL our friend ask and doubt not. When we ask open your heart to receive expect to receive believe and take HIM at HIS WORD . GOD wants to do it for us.

  17. 1 Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church.

Herod – Son of a Hero.

Today’s society exalts any one that sides with sin and the works of it. These people are applauded for there brave attitude to stand up for so called equal rights.
While at the same time persecuting anyone that opposes them. We call this a distraction in the Corps. Then the enemy tries to flank you when you’re busy arguing pointless debates and worried about things like Pastor Watts put, that happen because they are prophetic.
This should not distracts up but put it is in more alert, another prophetic sign:

    Luke 17:28-30
“It was the same as happened in the days of Lot: they were eating, they were drinking, they were buying, they were selling, they were planting, they were building; but on the day that Lot went out from Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. “It will be just the same on the day that the Son of Man is revealed.

Do not be deceived and set your eyes of Jesus, more than ever before.

  18. 10They passed the first and second guard posts and came to the iron gate leading to the city, and this opened for them all by itself. So they passed through and started walking down the street, and then the angel suddenly left him.

We too have so called guards (little demons) around us, with God we can walk right by them and they won’t notice us either. Some of us have an iron gate in front of us that keeps us trap inside Satan’s little cell. We have to learn to trust God and through prayer we can open the iron gate. Once the gates are opened we’ll be God’s presence and his blessings will come pouring in.

  19. 23 And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.

Just like Pastor said on Sunday God could do it now I He wanted to. So always Give God what is his, wether it is praise, tithe, or glory!

  20. How would you like to be rescued like this, and have any angel of the Lord come and break those chains, and free you from harm. The “Power of Prayer”………..

    “Stay Free”…………………………………………………………………………………….

  21. “And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.” His pride is recorded for all to see the true cost. Pride may not cost one physically, however it will cost one spiritually. Dear God, help us (me) to remain humble as you, and you alone are worthy of glory; “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done”. In God we trust! What a mighty God we serve! Thank God for his word. God bless America, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  22. Willing prisoner
17 But nmotioning to them with his hand to keep silent, he declared to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, “Go, tell these things to James and to the brethren.” And he departed and went to another place.

This amazing deliverance happened. A jail break miracle took place. Peter was escorted in heavenly fashion. It was so surreal he believed it to be a dream.

However the real story here is the willingness of Peter to be thrown in jail. He was between 4 groups of soldiers. He didn’t complain, fight, or whine. He simply allowed it to happen and was led by the spirit. Before we can experience a jail break we must first be placed in jail. We must trust that no matter where Christ takes us he is still in control.

  23. Acts 12:8

    Cultural Context: Ancient Rome Clothing

In the Greco- Roman world clothing basically fit into two categories:the tunic and the mantle. The tunic was something like the modern T- shirt, but very long (of knee or ankle length), made of wool or linen, with or without sleeves. In ancient terminology one “entered into” a tunic to put it on. A mantle was something like a large blanket wrapped around a person.
The tunic (or chiton) was the basic article of clothing for virtually all people, serving as a linen undergarment worn next to the skin. The only item of clothing the poorest people may have owned, it was often quite dirty. The average Roman man added a girdle and an abolla, a rectangular woolen mantle worn in a double fold over the right shoulder and fastened with a pin. Upper- class men wore a second undergarment over the tunic, in addition to the girdle. Prosperous Romans donned the familiar toga, a long, oval- shaped ( or semicircular) woolen mantle draped over the body in a series of complicated folds. Although the toga originated among the Romans, it soon found wide acceptance by wealthy citizens throughout the empire and remained the standard formal dress for Roman citizens until the late Roman period. Alternative garments for upper- class men included the himation, a mantle of a Greek style more popular in the eastern part of the empire, and the chlamys, a short, woolen mantle ( like a cape), often associated with soldiers.
Lower- class women often wore only an ankle- length tunic, gathered by a belt across the upper abdomen, while women of higher economic status added a mantle — often either a himation or a peplos — over the tunic. These garments were held in place by ornate “safety- pins” called fibula. The himation for women was smaller than that for men. It was sometimes dyed in various colors or adorned with a pattern, although coloration and patterning were simple by modern standards. But the patterns and coloring, as well as the size, did distinguish whether a himation was intended for a man or a woman. A woman’s himation was often pleated and could be worn in a wide variety of styles ( over the shoulder, as a cape, as a hood, diagonally across the upper body, etc.). The peplos was a single, large rectangle of cloth, distinguished from the himation by its size and especially by the way it was folded: The peplos always used a cuff- like overfold called an apotygma. A woman’s peplos was typically as long as the distance from her shoulders to her feet, plus about 12 inches ( 30. 5 cm) for the apotygma. The fold for the apotygma was approximately at the shoulders, from which it draped outward and down over the upper body. The fold could be worn as a hood over the head as a sign of modesty when a woman was walking in the streets or taking part in certain religious ceremonies ( cf. 1Co 11: 6).
Clothes were draped over the body rather than fitted; indeed, this draping effect is part of the classical ideal of dignity and serenity. At night, one’s clothing ( especially the mantle) could also serve as a blanket. Leather sandals were the standard footwear for all ranks of society.
In ancient sculpture people often appear wearing only a mantle ( if anything at all). This is because of the classical ideal of beauty and does not reflect ordinary dress. In fact, people almost always donned tunics under their mantles, and men ordinarily wore loincloths as underwear as well. A scene from Pompeii depicts two female athletes wearing garments similar to a modern two- piece swim suit, suggesting that women of means had a fairly wide variety of underwear and outerwear available to them.
Upper- class Roman women often frequently sported exotic hairstyles, often with an outlandish display of curls. Dyeing the hair and wearing expensive cosmetics were popular with women ( cf. 1Pe 3: 3), who also wore decorative tiaras, pins and nets with their hair. The wearing of rings and other jewelry by both men and women contributed to the display of wealth. James warned his readers not to be so dazzled by the finery of the rich that they showed partiality to wealthy believers over their less fortunate Christian brothers and sisters.
    (James 2:1 ArchSB)

  24. Extra Biblical Writings:

    The death of King Agrippa

    Antiquities. 19. 8. 2 by Josephus Flavis

    (343) Now, when Agrippa had reigned three years over all Judea, he came to the city Cesarea, which was formerly called Strato’s Tower; and there he exhibited shows in honor of Caesar, upon his being informed that there was a certain festival celebrated to make vows for his safety. At which festival, a great multitude was gotten together of the principal persons, and such as were of dignity through his province. (344) On the second day of which shows he put on a garment made wholly of silver, and of a contexture truly wonderful, and came into the theatre early in the morning; at which time the silver of his garment being illuminated by the fresh reflection of the sun’s rays upon it, shone out after a surprising manner, and was so resplendent at to spread a horror over those that looked intently upon him; (345) and presently his flatterers cried out, one from one place, and another from another (though not for his good), that he was a god; and they added, “Be thou merciful to us; for although we have hitherto reverenced thee only as a man, yet shall we henceforth own thee as superior to mortal nature.” (346) Upon this the king did neither rebuke them, nor reject their impious flattery. But, as he presently afterwards looked up, he saw an owl sitting on a certain rope over his head, and immediately understood that this bird was the messenger of ill tidings, as it had once been the messenger of good tidings to him; and fell into the deepest sorrow. A severe pain also arose in his belly, and began in a most violent manner. (347) He therefore looked upon his friends, and said, “I whom you call a god, am commanded presently to depart this life; while Providence thus reproves the lying words you just now said to me; and I, who was by you called immortal, am immediately to be hurried away by death. But I am bound to accept of what Providence allots as it pleases God; for we have by no means lived ill, but in a splendid and happy manner.” (348) When he said this, his pain was become violent. Accordingly he was carried into the palace; and the rumor went abroad everywhere, that he would certainly die in a little time. (349) But the multitude presently sat in sackcloth, with their wives and children, after the law of their country, and besought God for the king’s recovery. All places were also full of mourning and lamentation. Now the king rested in a high chamber, and as he saw them below lying prostrate on the ground, he could not himself forbear weeping. (350) And when he had been quite worn out by the pain in his belly for five days, he departed this life, being in the fifty- fourth year of his age, and in the seventh year of his reign; (351) for he reigned four years under Caius Caesar, three of them were over Philip’s tetrarchy only, and on the fourth he had that of Herod added to it; and he reigned besides those, three years under the reign of Claudius Caesar:in which time he reigned over the forementioned countries, and also had Judea added to them, as also Samaria and Cesarea. (352) The revenues that he received out of them were very great, no less than twelve millions of drachmae. Yet did he borrow great sums from others; for he was so very liberal, that his expenses exceeded his incomes; and his generosity was boundless
( The Works of Josephus, Antiquities 19.8.2)

  25. 5 Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.

There are people all around us that are in prison in their minds. It is the duty of the church to pray for them without ceasing. I believe and we see through scripture that if we would continue in fervent and faithful prayer for them they will be loosed from their prison.

  26. 5 Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.

God hears our cries; we do not serve a deaf God!!

  27. It is important that we allow the word of God to grow in us on a daily basis. Satan will do everything in his power to keep us from getting what God wants us to have. If we would continue to move forward no matter what our circumstance may be, God will give us the strength to withstand everything the enemy throws at us.

  28. Suddenly, there was a bright light in the cell, and an angel of the Lord stood before Peter. The angel struck him on the side to awaken him and said, “Quick! Get up!” And the chains fell off his wrists. Then the angel told him, “Get dressed and put on your sandals.” And he did. “Now put on your coat and follow me,” the angel ordered. So Peter left the cell, following the angel. But all the time he thought it was a vision. He didn’t realize it was actually happening. (‭Acts of the Apostles‬ ‭12‬:‭7-9‬ NLT)

Sometimes the escape you have been praying for will seem unreal. Trust that the Lord is looking out for you in your time of need… It may come when you think all hope is lost.

  29. 7 And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.

Never alone. It is in those dark hours in a life prison when all seems lost that the Light shines. He wil be there like the song on Sunday night said. Through the storm and the pain…through the high and the low. God has an end and plan for us. He knows when we are in need. You don’t have to stay in prison rise up quickly, get up and praise!

  30. 5 Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.

Amen! When our bretheren is in need no matter the situation we should always be praying for them. Prayer is everything and its real. Prayers are the most precious gift you can give someone at all times. We must always be filled with the HG And let God move in us so people can be turned to God hallelujah!!! 🙂

  31. 5 Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.

Someone’s we wake up spiritually and we’re bound and in prison with stony men on either side of us but if it was not for the Lord sending us a way out we would be headed strait for death. Sometimes the methods of our deliverance is painful, but it is always nessicary.

  32. 15 And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel.

Sometimes God does things that we just can’t believe could be true, but we should act on faith and believe. All things are possible with God.

  33. Herod !!!! 21. And upon a set day Her’-od, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them. 22. And the people, gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man. 23. And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost. Becareful what you say or do.

  34. 21 And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them.

22 And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man.

23 And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.

We need to be careful who we give the thanks and the glory to, for if we do not give the glory to God, especially if we are lifted up to a high position such as King Herod, then there will be consequences for that. For as easily God gives, God can also take away, it’s because of him we have breath in our bodies and we see the sun rise up in the sky every day. When we bring our attention to other people and other things then we realize who really deserves the glory.

Hebrews 13:13-15 Let us go forth therefore unto without the camp bearing his reproach. For here have we no continuing city but we seek one to come. By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually , that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.
