1 Chronicles 9

1 So all Israel were reckoned by genealogies; and, behold, they were written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah, who were carried away to Babylon for their transgression.

2 Now the first inhabitants that dwelt in their possessions in their cities were, the Israelites, the priests, Levites, and the Nethinims.

3 And in Jerusalem dwelt of the children of Judah, and of the children of Benjamin, and of the children of Ephraim, and Manasseh;

4 Uthai the son of Ammihud, the son of Omri, the son of Imri, the son of Bani, of the children of Pharez the son of Judah.

5 And of the Shilonites; Asaiah the firstborn, and his sons.

6 And of the sons of Zerah; Jeuel, and their brethren, six hundred and ninety.

7 And of the sons of Benjamin; Sallu the son of Meshullam, the son of Hodaviah, the son of Hasenuah,

8 And Ibneiah the son of Jeroham, and Elah the son of Uzzi, the son of Michri, and Meshullam the son of Shephathiah, the son of Reuel, the son of Ibnijah;

9 And their brethren, according to their generations, nine hundred and fifty and six. All these men were chief of the fathers in the house of their fathers.

10 And of the priests; Jedaiah, and Jehoiarib, and Jachin,

11 And Azariah the son of Hilkiah, the son of Meshullam, the son of Zadok, the son of Meraioth, the son of Ahitub, the ruler of the house of God;

12 And Adaiah the son of Jeroham, the son of Pashur, the son of Malchijah, and Maasiai the son of Adiel, the son of Jahzerah, the son of Meshullam, the son of Meshillemith, the son of Immer;

13 And their brethren, heads of the house of their fathers, a thousand and seven hundred and threescore; very able men for the work of the service of the house of God.

14 And of the Levites; Shemaiah the son of Hasshub, the son of Azrikam, the son of Hashabiah, of the sons of Merari;

15 And Bakbakkar, Heresh, and Galal, and Mattaniah the son of Micah, the son of Zichri, the son of Asaph;

16 And Obadiah the son of Shemaiah, the son of Galal, the son of Jeduthun, and Berechiah the son of Asa, the son of Elkanah, that dwelt in the villages of the Netophathites.

17 And the porters were, Shallum, and Akkub, and Talmon, and Ahiman, and their brethren: Shallum was the chief;

18 Who hitherto waited in the king’s gate eastward: they were porters in the companies of the children of Levi.

19 And Shallum the son of Kore, the son of Ebiasaph, the son of Korah, and his brethren, of the house of his father, the Korahites, were over the work of the service, keepers of the gates of the tabernacle: and their fathers, being over the host of the Lord, were keepers of the entry.

20 And Phinehas the son of Eleazar was the ruler over them in time past, and the Lord was with him.

21 And Zechariah the son of Meshelemiah was porter of the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

22 All these which were chosen to be porters in the gates were two hundred and twelve. These were reckoned by their genealogy in their villages, whom David and Samuel the seer did ordain in their set office.

23 So they and their children had the oversight of the gates of the house of the Lord, namely, the house of the tabernacle, by wards.

24 In four quarters were the porters, toward the east, west, north, and south.

25 And their brethren, which were in their villages, were to come after seven days from time to time with them.

26 For these Levites, the four chief porters, were in their set office, and were over the chambers and treasuries of the house of God.

27 And they lodged round about the house of God, because the charge was upon them, and the opening thereof every morning pertained to them.

28 And certain of them had the charge of the ministering vessels, that they should bring them in and out by tale.

29 Some of them also were appointed to oversee the vessels, and all the instruments of the sanctuary, and the fine flour, and the wine, and the oil, and the frankincense, and the spices.

30 And some of the sons of the priests made the ointment of the spices.

31 And Mattithiah, one of the Levites, who was the firstborn of Shallum the Korahite, had the set office over the things that were made in the pans.

32 And other of their brethren, of the sons of the Kohathites, were over the shewbread, to prepare it every sabbath.

33 And these are the singers, chief of the fathers of the Levites, who remaining in the chambers were free: for they were employed in that work day and night.

34 These chief fathers of the Levites were chief throughout their generations; these dwelt at Jerusalem.

35 And in Gibeon dwelt the father of Gibeon, Jehiel, whose wife’s name was Maachah:

36 And his firstborn son Abdon, then Zur, and Kish, and Baal, and Ner, and Nadab.

37 And Gedor, and Ahio, and Zechariah, and Mikloth.

38 And Mikloth begat Shimeam. And they also dwelt with their brethren at Jerusalem, over against their brethren.

39 And Ner begat Kish; and Kish begat Saul; and Saul begat Jonathan, and Malchishua, and Abinadab, and Eshbaal.

40 And the son of Jonathan was Meribbaal: and Meribbaal begat Micah.

41 And the sons of Micah were, Pithon, and Melech, and Tahrea, and Ahaz.

42 And Ahaz begat Jarah; and Jarah begat Alemeth, and Azmaveth, and Zimri; and Zimri begat Moza;

43 And Moza begat Binea; and Rephaiah his son, Eleasah his son, Azel his son.

44 And Azel had six sons, whose names are these, Azrikam, Bocheru, and Ishmael, and Sheariah, and Obadiah, and Hanan: these were the sons of Azel.

  1. 33. The musicians, all prominent Levites, lived at the Temple. They were exempt from other responsibilities since they were on duty at all hours. NLT

    Like the doctors of today, they had 24 hour, on-call, resident worship leaders!

  2. 27 And they lodged round about the house of God, because the charge was upon them, and the opening thereof every morning pertained to them.

    28 And certain of them had the charge of the ministering vessels, that they should bring them in and out by tale.

    29 Some of them also were appointed to oversee the vessels, and all the instruments of the sanctuary, and the fine flour, and the wine, and the oil, and the frankincense, and the spices.

  3. Verses 22-25 MSG “The number of those who had been chosen to be security guards was 212—they were officially registered in their own camps. David and Samuel the seer handpicked them for their dependability. They and their sons had the permanent responsibility for guarding the gates of God’s house, the house of worship; the main security guards were posted at the four entrances, east, west, north, and south; their brothers in the villages were scheduled to give them relief weekly—the four main security guards were responsible for round-the-clock surveillance.” We must be on a 24 hour around the clock guard of our hearts. Everyone has a job to do in God’s house and we must be willing to give someone relief whenever and where ever needed. This also reminds me of Western Day, we are going to need all hands on deck…. dependable, flexible and responsible workers for the kingdom.

  4. 21 And Zechariah the son of Meshelemiah was porter of the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

    22 All these which were chosen to be porters in the gates were two hundred and twelve. These were reckoned by their genealogy in their villages, whom David and Samuel the seer did ordain in their set office.

    29 Some of them also were appointed to oversee the vessels, and all the instruments of the sanctuary, and the fine flour, and the wine, and the oil, and the frankincense, and the spices.

    Each had a specified c duty to perform. Don’t ever think what you are doing for the kingdom has no significance. Even the door keeper, the greeters, the guest attendance, the cookie makers , the bus drivers, runners, door knickers, janitors,sound booth, matter where you serve in the kingdom do it with all your might. The Bible says as unto the Lord. Each appointed for a pupose!

  5. 23 So they and their children had the oversight of the gates of the house of the Lord, namely, the house of the tabernacle, by wards.

    We must involve our children in serving Jesus beside us. That is how we teach them. That is how we teach new believers (coupled with classes). We lead by example. Whether we like it or not, we are leading our families by our every move.

    skilled and seasoned workers……
    There are different types of workers, different capacities, different attitudes, and for each their reward!!! Thinking about WHO gives the reward, should be enough to make us want to have an excellent attitude in everything we do!!!

  7. Verses 28-33 tell of some of the duties people had. We all have a purpose and if we are willing God will use us for His glory.

  8. 26 For these Levites, the four chief porters, were in their set office, and were over the chambers and treasuries of the house of God.

    27 And they lodged round about the house of God, because the charge was upon them, and the opening thereof every morning pertained to them.

    29 Some of them also were appointed to oversee the vessels, and all the instruments of the sanctuary, and the fine flour, and the wine, and the oil, and the frankincense, and the spices.

    It’s amazing the commitment of The Levites! They loved God and the work of God so much that they gave themselves to it day and night. They served in every way faithfully. We must possess that same spirit and attitude and be willing to serve the house of God and kingdom of God.

  9. iLove to Grow in the Word

    1 Chronicles 9:28 NLT Some of the gatekeepers were assigned to care for the various articles used in worship. They checked them in and out to avoid any loss.

    The honor system plus accountability plus a check out system avoids loss. That’s a great idea…but other than that look at the work and sacrifice the priests put into the house of God.

    25Their relatives in the villages came regularly to share their duties for seven-day periods.
    26The four chief gatekeepers, all Levites, were trusted officials, for they were responsible for the rooms and treasuries at the house of God. 27They would spend the night around the house of God, since it was their duty to guard it and to open the gates every morning.

    Minister on Duty…it’s time to WORK.

  10. 1 Chronicles 9:33-34 And then there were the musicians, all heads of Levite families. They had permanent living quarters in The Temple; because they were on twenty-four-hour duty, they were exempt from all other duties. These were the heads of Levite families as designated in their family tree. They lived in Jerusalem.

    The Levites were exempt from many of the daily activities of the Israelites. They were not counted in the census. They were not counted as potential soldiers during time of war. The Levite musicians were specifically trained to be musicians and nothing else. Skill requires training, training requires practice and effort. Whatever level of musician we are today; we have room to improve and learn new things. We all can improve and we should all strive to be better tomorrow than we were today.

    This comes with a warning though. There are many problems created when a person over-commits. A worship leader who is also Sunday school teacher, on the prayer ministry team, the decorating committee, ISM, Motion and wherever else they are needed may be over-committed. Did God call us to really do ALL these things? If we are spread too thinly, we will likely be ineffective at everything.

  11. 13 The priests, who were heads of families, numbered 1,760. They were able men, responsible for ministering in the house of God. NIV
    Men, it is time to buckle down and be the priest of your homes. I have heard in the past from a preacher once that said if you cannot handle your home and not being the priest of your home then how can God trust you to be leader or minister at church? Ministering starts at home, who are you ministering to today?

  12. 23 They and their descendants were in charge of guarding the gates of the house of the LORD–the house called the tent of meeting.

    Not only are we working but our children are joining us to work with us. We are guarding the Lord of the house not only in the physical but in the spiritual also. Everyday I pray that when souls walk into the entrance of the church they will feel something different. A feeling that can only be given by God. I will never forget the first time my family and I walked into POFW. It’s a feeling that I’ll never forget, it was exactly what we wanted and I praise God for bringing us here. We don’t only have people that love souls but that truly love God.

  13. 26 For these Levites, the four chief porters, were in their set office, and were over the chambers and treasuries of the house of God.

    27 And they lodged round about the house of God, because the charge was upon them, and the opening thereof every morning pertained to them.

  14. This chapter tell me the important of working in the Kingdom and all the work it takes. It’s important for us to do something at the church. No job is to small in the kingdom of god the all are very important
    There no job better then working in the kingdom of god

  15. No matter where we serve and what our responsibilities are in the church, it’s all for the kingdom of God.

    1 Corinthians 15:58, “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the LORD, forasmuch as ye know that your labour of love is not in vain in the LORD.”

  16. FAITHFUL KINGDOM WORKERS

    For generations there has been opportunities to SERVE in the Kingdom of GOD, by working or serving at the local church. We read here that for generations there have been important responsibilities, executed by honest, responsible PEOPLE like you and I. Serving is not about having our name mentioned or receiving compensation or credit for accomplished tasks. Serving is making sure that I have done what the LORD and HIS Kingdom has asked me to do.

    It is a HIGH honor and privilege to SERVE the house of GOD. Every leader, minister and saint should view the House of GOD, the Church in this fashion.

    Faithfulness, reliability and dependability are key factors in FAITHFUL KINGDOM WORKERS, every opportunity to SERVE was affected by someone elses opportunity to SERVE. At The Pentecostals of Fort Worth we rely on the FAITHFULNESS of each other to accomplish all that we are empowered to do for JESUS.

    Thank you to everyone that has answered the call to SERVE at The POFW. Your willingness to be a FAITHFUL KINGDOM WORKER is building a great Church for the Endtime Revival. Prepare to receive your BLESSING!

  17. 1 So all Israel were reckoned by genealogies; and, behold, they were written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah, who were carried away to Babylon for their transgression.

    Babylon is a type of the world — we must be careful what we allow to take residence in our heart. If we are living for the Lord and start desiring to participate in and become like the world, eventually God will allow us to have what we want, and we will be carried away into and swept away by the world.

    God will never transcend our will, our right to chose. His desire would be for us to choose to live for Him, the one who gave His life so that we might have live. However, if we chose the world over Him, he is a gentlemen and will allow us to have what we desire.

  18. 33 And these are the singers, chief of the fathers of the Levites, who remaining in the chambers were free: for they were employed in that work day and night.

    I love singing and this verse reminds me when people around me used to get upset because I am always humming a tune. Must if the time I do it unconsciously, but there is freedom in praise!!! The verse confirms it, because although they remained in the chambers they were free and they worked day and night. They sang day and night all day long!!! Love to Praise the Lord!!!

  19. The WORK of the ministry.

    For these Levites, the four chief porters, were in their set office, and were over the chambers and treasuries of the house of God.

    It is work to do ministry. It’s not all fun and games. It is work that takes time. Because people take time. Our church is a ministering church that works hard and enjoys the relationships we cultivate there. It’s time to work for the kingdom of God.

  20. 22 All these which were chosen to be porters in the gates were two hundred and twelve.

    This is one of those chapters I have looked over multiple times and didnt see most of its significance until now. God is paying attention to every detail that we do, the word Porter means burden carrier and God set a certain amount of people to oversee the job. We, as people in the fleshly mindset, can easily see jobs in titles and positions, and who has a more important job than another. God has given a clear signs through his word, and does on multiple occasions, of how much he is looking at the ones doing the job behind the scenes. Multiple stories in the Bible cover the main events that we reference in our teachings, and God has still made sure to mention the things people did that others would consider trivial or less important. We know that each tittle of the word shall not fail, and God has made it a point to show how much the details matter to Him and they are just as significant as the others.

  21. 22 All these which were chosen to be porters in the gates were two hundred and twelve. These were reckoned by their genealogy in their villages, whom David and Samuel the seer did ordain in their set office.

    23 So they and their children had the oversight of the gates of the house of the Lord, namely, the house of the tabernacle, by wards.

  22. So they and their children had the oversight of the gates of the house of the Lord, namely, the house of the tabernacle, by wards.

    Let us make sure that we are showing and allowing our children to be involved I. The church. Children’s ministry and youth is not the only way for them to get involved. Bring them to prayer, have them work at the church picking up trash or anything they can put their hands to .

  23. 23 So they and their children had the oversight of the gates of the house of the Lord, namely, the house of the tabernacle, by wards.

    We should always lead by example our children is always watching our actions!

  24. 32 And other of their brethren, of the sons of the Kohathites, were over the shewbread, to prepare it every sabbath.

    The break down of the tabernacle, was amazing. All the Levites that were chosen and designated by the kings and priest to do there duties. None of the duties were of lesser value. Just as the porters were important to the shew bread makers, everyone position is important in the work to house of God. Everyone took there position to the highest of seriousness because they all knew that it was for the purpose of the excellence in serving in Gods kingdom through the tabernacle.

    This is were it applies to us, do not undervalue the importance of what you do for the working of the church. Do it with all excellence as to God. Because we know that we do this, not for our sake but for God.

  25. Gatekeepers are priests who gaurdian the entrance of the temple. They come from the tribe of Levi and have a distinct duties, which include collecting the worshipers monetary offering and guarding the store rooms and “treasuries” vs26. Their primary job is to protect around the clock. Some may think that the position of a Gatekeeper is humble and insignificant possibly because of of what Ps 84:10 says. Their is actually no low or menial task when work is being done for God. Whether doorkeeping, or high priest, janitor, or pastor, Sunday school teacher or usher- no task is unimportant when it comes to serving God.

  26. 1 Chronicles 9:33 (NLT)
    33 The musicians, all prominent Levites, lived at the Temple. They were exempt from other responsibilities since they were on duty at all hours.

    Praise never takes a break.

  27. 33 And these are the singers, chief of the fathers of the Levites, who remaining in the chambers were free: for they were employed in that work day and night.

    We are made to worship…at all times. Reminds me of the angels constantly worshiping saying holy, holy holy….

  28. “Now the first inhabitants that dwelt in their possessions in their cities were, the Israelites, the priests, Levites, and the Nethinims.” The word of God (Jesus) identifies first. To be first can mean different things. To be first is often too prepare and serve; whereas in battle the first do always return. Dear God, let us comprehend the meaning and purpose. God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  29. “So all Israel were reckoned by genealogies; and, behold, they were written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah, who were carried away to Babylon for their transgression.” The children of Israel were chosen by the Lord; however they were also allowed to be chastised by the Lord. We should therefore be mindful and prayerful of self, and never doubt that the Lord has not changed. God help be cognizant of our ways and be quick to change, in Jesus name.

  30. “22 All these which were chosen to be porters in the gates were two hundred and twelve. These were reckoned by their genealogy in their villages, whom David and Samuel the seer did ordain in their set office.
    23 So they and their children had the oversight of the gates of the house of the Lord, namely, the house of the tabernacle, by wards.”

    We all have a purpose! In order to get to purpose there must be a guidance of righteousness that one must follow. You and I are important to God’s kingdom, so don’t ever allow the devil to tell you your capabilities aren’t of worth because of your past. YOU have a purpose! Pursue it! It won’t be easy , but the reward is far more greater than that which is “successful” to the world of unrighteousness! Like a soldier has a major role in the army to battle the enemy, you as well have a MAJOR ROLE! To LEAD, TEACH, PREACH, & LIVE truth! It’s time to reach out to this world of wickedness and bring light to the darkness and let the Holy Ghost move like NEVER BEFORE! #Revival

  31. Can God in trust you with the work of the kingdom? It takes a willing vessel to do God’s work and be successful. You can’t allow life’s trials to throw you off course.

  32. v26 For in this trusted office were four chief gatekeepers; they were Levites.And they had charge over the chambers and Treasuries of the house of God.

    God did not intend for the Pastor to be all things and do all things in the Church. God has set every member in the body as it pleases Him.

  33. 22 All these which were chosen to be porters in the gates were two hundred and twelve. These were reckoned by their genealogy in their villages, whom David and Samuel the seer did ordain in their set office.

  34. “And their brethren, heads of the house of their fathers, a thousand and seven hundred and threescore; very able men for the work of the service of the house of God.”
    ‭‭1 Chronicles‬ ‭9:13‬ ‭KJV‬‬

  35. This chapter records the view of why they went into Exile. It was their disobedience to the law. They failed to keep their end of the covenant so God gave them over to their enemies.

  36. “Those who led the music lived in rooms in the temple. They were the leaders of their Levite families. Their only duty was to lead the music. They had to do that work day and night. All of them were the leaders of their Levite families. They were listed as chiefs in their family history. They lived in Jerusalem.”
    ‭‭1 Chronicles‬ ‭9:33-34‬ ‭NIRV‬‬

    The musicians were set apart and focused on one task.

  37. “Now the first inhabitants that dwelt in their possessions in their cities were, the Israelites, the priests, Levites, and the Nethinims.”
    ‭‭1 Chronicles‬ ‭9:2‬ ‭KJV‬‬

    Methionims—
    temple slaves assigned to the Levites and priests for service in the sanctuary

    All of the people listened were in a servant role in a work relationship. We need to remember that when we think that other people are sitting around to help too hard.
    They really aren’t.

  38. 22 All these which were chosen to be porters in the gates were two hundred and twelve. These were reckoned by their genealogy in their villages, whom David and Samuel the seer did ordain in their set office.

    The importance of our welcome ministry, wow I remember the first time we enter the front door of POFW. They made us feel so welcome and the impression they make to first time guest is so important. Great Job welcome guest ministry.
