2 Chronicles 24

1 Joash was seven years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name also was Zibiah of Beersheba.

2 And Joash did that which was right in the sight of the Lord all the days of Jehoiada the priest.

3 And Jehoiada took for him two wives; and he begat sons and daughters.

4 And it came to pass after this, that Joash was minded to repair the house of the Lord.

5 And he gathered together the priests and the Levites, and said to them, Go out unto the cities of Judah, and gather of all Israel money to repair the house of your God from year to year, and see that ye hasten the matter. Howbeit the Levites hastened it not.

6 And the king called for Jehoiada the chief, and said unto him, Why hast thou not required of the Levites to bring in out of Judah and out of Jerusalem the collection, according to the commandment of Moses the servant of the Lord, and of the congregation of Israel, for the tabernacle of witness?

7 For the sons of Athaliah, that wicked woman, had broken up the house of God; and also all the dedicated things of the house of the Lord did they bestow upon Baalim.

8 And at the king’s commandment they made a chest, and set it without at the gate of the house of the Lord.

9 And they made a proclamation through Judah and Jerusalem, to bring in to the Lord the collection that Moses the servant of God laid upon Israel in the wilderness.

10 And all the princes and all the people rejoiced, and brought in, and cast into the chest, until they had made an end.

11 Now it came to pass, that at what time the chest was brought unto the king’s office by the hand of the Levites, and when they saw that there was much money, the king’s scribe and the high priest’s officer came and emptied the chest, and took it, and carried it to his place again. Thus they did day by day, and gathered money in abundance.

12 And the king and Jehoiada gave it to such as did the work of the service of the house of the Lord, and hired masons and carpenters to repair the house of the Lord, and also such as wrought iron and brass to mend the house of the Lord.

13 So the workmen wrought, and the work was perfected by them, and they set the house of God in his state, and strengthened it.

14 And when they had finished it, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada, whereof were made vessels for the house of the Lord, even vessels to minister, and to offer withal, and spoons, and vessels of gold and silver. And they offered burnt offerings in the house of the Lord continually all the days of Jehoiada.

15 But Jehoiada waxed old, and was full of days when he died; an hundred and thirty years old was he when he died.

16 And they buried him in the city of David among the kings, because he had done good in Israel, both toward God, and toward his house.

17 Now after the death of Jehoiada came the princes of Judah, and made obeisance to the king. Then the king hearkened unto them.

18 And they left the house of the Lord God of their fathers, and served groves and idols: and wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this their trespass.

19 Yet he sent prophets to them, to bring them again unto the Lord; and they testified against them: but they would not give ear.

20 And the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, which stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of the Lord, that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken the Lord, he hath also forsaken you.

21 And they conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of the Lord.

22 Thus Joash the king remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but slew his son. And when he died, he said, The Lord look upon it, and require it.

23 And it came to pass at the end of the year, that the host of Syria came up against him: and they came to Judah and Jerusalem, and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people, and sent all the spoil of them unto the king of Damascus.

24 For the army of the Syrians came with a small company of men, and the Lord delivered a very great host into their hand, because they had forsaken the Lord God of their fathers. So they executed judgment against Joash.

25 And when they were departed from him, (for they left him in great diseases,) his own servants conspired against him for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and slew him on his bed, and he died: and they buried him in the city of David, but they buried him not in the sepulchres of the kings.

26 And these are they that conspired against him; Zabad the son of Shimeath an Ammonitess, and Jehozabad the son of Shimrith a Moabitess.

27 Now concerning his sons, and the greatness of the burdens laid upon him, and the repairing of the house of God, behold, they are written in the story of the book of the kings. And Amaziah his son reigned in his stead.

  1. What are we really mad about?

20 And the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, which stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of the Lord, that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken the Lord, he hath also forsaken you. 21 And they conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of the Lord.

Why was Jehoiada stoned? Were the people truly upset with what he had to say or how what he said pricked their hearts. Sometimes, God has to get our attention. Most of the time He will use our Pastor. However, God can use anything to get our attention. The thing to keep in mind when we find our “bell rung” is why did it sting so bad? Likely we are found lacking or just plain sinful.

Either way, dont shoot the messenger. Consider the message. The Dictionary defines conviction as a fixed or strong belief. Conviction is really much more than that. Your convictions include your values, commitments and motivations. Godly convictions are essential for spiritual growth and maturity. What is ironic today is that people often have strong convictions about weak issues (football, fashions, etc.) while having weak convictions about major issues (what is right and what is wrong).

This we get our feelings hurt when someone tries to correct us. We expect to be persecuted and hurt by the world. That is just the nature of the world. However many times it takes us by total surprise when people in the church hurt our feelings. We often jump to the conclusion they dont like us or have it out for us. It could be that like Jehoiada, God is using that person to try and get us to straighten something that is crooked in our lives.

  2. iLove to Grow in the Word
2 Chronicles 24:20 NLT Then the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest. He stood before the people and said, “This is what God says: Why do you disobey the LORD’s commands and keep yourselves from prospering? You have abandoned the LORD, and now He has abandoned you!”

Wow, the man of God dies and the people backslide…then his son stands up and gives them the revelation that disobeying keeps you from prospering.

Let us obey the Lord and thereby we will be prosperous. 🙂

  3. 2 And Joash did that which was right in the sight of the Lord all the days of Jehoiada the priest.

Never underestimate the importance of your Pastor. Notice it doesn’t say that Joash was faithful to God all the days of his life, just Jehoiada’s life. When that presence of spiritual authority is absent we are left uncovered. If you had to travel through a battle field and the enemy was attacking you would want a shield, right? You need a covering. When we are out of line and either have no pastor or are not submitted to our pastor there is no divine order in our lives. It invites attacks, leaves us vulnerable and we live in spiritual chaos( which normally manifests physically). Trust God to give you a shepard who will help see you through and invest into you to prosper you spiritually. Pastor can pour his heart into you, but if you’re not willing to do the work then you’ll come up bankrupt. Submit to your man of God.

  4. 17 But after Jehoiada’s death, the leaders of Judah came and bowed before King Joash and persuaded him to listen to their advice. (NLT)

Don’t let anyone pursuade you that God, His kingdom and His word are worth abandoning. I’m reminded of what Pastor preached a couple of Sunday nights ago – to value the His kingdom and our eternity. There is nothing more valuable!!

  5. 25-26. When the Arameans left Judah, Joash was severely wounded. Now that the king’s supporters were dead, his own servants (Zabad, son of Shimeath the Ammonitess, and Jehozabad, son of Shimrith the Moabitess) conspired to kill him. They remembered how he had killed Zechariah, Jehoiada’s son. The servants murdered Joash while he rested on his bed and buried him in the city of David, Jerusalem. However, they did not entomb him with the kings, his own ancestors. The good things that he did while Jehoiada advised him were forgotten. The Voice

The good things he did in the past were quickly overshadowed by the wrongs he committed later, and even those closest to him turned against him.
We must keep the Faith until the very end lest we become an example for others to learn how not to be. Our reward is ahead of us, so there is no letting up or going back.

  6. 20 And the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, which stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of the Lord, that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken the Lord, he hath also forsaken you.

21 And they conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of the Lord.

Sometimes people will throw you stones when you try to tell people what the word of God is saying. Some people do not want to hear what they are doing in their life is a sin, so we will get backlash when we spread the good news of the gospel and his word to people. But don’t worry, because there will be people that accept the message and that makes the effort worth it.

  7. 2 Chronicles 24

7 years old reigning over a kingdom. the importance if what is placed in the heart of a child. Josh I believe is the youngest King recorded to reign. Train up a child . I watch week after week, parents who bring their children to prayer church, prayer meetings, leadership meetings. What an awesome training going on. But I would admonish you be careful what is spoken at your dinner table, in your vehicles going down the road, and to one another as a family. What is done in the privacy of your own home will leave a greater impact on your children than what is ever done in the public. Joash a child did which was right in the sight of God. I’m thankful for all the families I see working for the kingdom of God. During prayer last week there was a child that came to me and put their arms around me, it was as if God was using their arms but He was actually the one holding me. Thank you to the parents of POFW how you are raising your children in the fear of God,great leaders come from sacrifice and it starts at a young age.

  8. It hurts to read things that have happened along time ago but are still happening today. To look back and remember all those faces that were sold out to God and now not to see them in Him.

  9. 19 Yet he sent prophets to them, to bring them again unto the Lord; and they testified against them: but they would not give ear.

How many times does the lord have to warned us how many times did the lord warned them
God is warning some people before he take action. Put away your sinful things And love me with your whole heart and with all soul.

He waring them to stop their sinful thing

  10. 20 And the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, which stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of the Lord, that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken the Lord, he hath also forsaken you.
21 And they conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of the Lord.

We can gain the whole world and yet lose our soul salvation. Riches or worldly wealth are deceptive and we can get caught up in that pursuit at the cost of losing out with God. Count your blessings every day so as to not forget where God has brought you from and blessed you with. Don’t forget!

  11. HEAR WHAT THE SPIRIT SAYS

This chapter reveals to us how quickly we can fall away from the LORD if we do not HEAR and HEED the voice of the LORD and the WORD of GOD. GOD will send warnings through his prophets of voices; pastors, teachers, evangelists, prophets and apostles.

People who are struggling in life, really do not want to hear the truth. In times of struggle we want to hear that it is the devil or someone elses fault that we are struggling. However the FIRST person I must save is ME. My only HOPE for salvation is for GOD to send a messenger to me with a WORD from the LORD.

We must cleave to the WORD of the LORD and not forsake it. Also we must be prayerful to not STONE the Messenger. Zechariah spoke the TRUTH about the condition of the people and the people conspired against him.

Conspire – 1. to agree together, esp. secretly, to do something wrong, evil, or illegal.
    2. to act or work together toward the same goal.
    3. to contrive; plot.

The people made plans to harm the man of GOD because he told them the TRUTH.

How often does this happen today?

Your Pastor tells you something you do not want to hear and all of the sudden you begin to look for everything he has done that you do not like or agree with and Conspire to destroy him with rebellion, resistance or an all out attack on his life through negative words, gossiping and backbiting. (It is still GOSSIP even if you say it in your house).

    The LORD said,

Thus saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of the Lord, that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken the Lord, he hath also forsaken you.

    iRepent
    iPraise
    iPray
    iWork
    iGive
    iReap

  12. It is sad to read how quickly and easily Joash forgot the kindness and direction that Jehoiada had expressed to him for so many years. We may not see them or hear them at times but there are so many that we don’t even know about that are praying for us and stepping in the gap for us. So never quit and always remember the goodness of our God and what He brought you through. Thank you Lord for my family and for an awesome church family too.

  13. 11 Now it came to pass, that at what time the chest was brought unto the king’s office by the hand of the Levites, and when they saw that there was much money, the king’s scribe and the high priest’s officer came and emptied the chest, and took it, and carried it to his place again. Thus they did day by day, and gathered money in abundance.

If we as a church would practice this principle I believe the “the chest” would never be empty just like the cruse of oil that Elisha prayed for the widow who baked him her last meal.

  14. 2 Chronicles 24:20 NLT Then the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest. He stood before the people and said, “This is what God says: Why do you disobey the LORD’s commands and keep yourselves from prospering? You have abandoned the LORD, and now He has abandoned you!”
We must understand that when we disobey God we keep ourselves from being blessed by Him. That God stands ready and willing to bless his people but we are the ones who restrict God’s blessings. Let us align ourselves with God and position ourselves to be blessed!

  15. 20 And the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, which stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of the Lord, that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken the Lord, he hath also forsaken you.

  16. 20 And the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, which stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of the Lord, that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken the Lord, he hath also forsaken you.

If we forsake the things of God he will forsake us it’s plain and simple!

  17. 2 Chronicles 24:27 (NLT)
27 The account of the sons of Joash, the prophecies about him, and the record of his restoration of the Temple of God are written in The Commentary on the Book of the Kings. His son Amaziah became the next king.

Joash was used to restore Israel after Athaliah. He restored the temple and put the country of Judah in a place of blessing and prosperity with God.

Then Joash forgot about God. Or rather it was revealed just how much he knew the Lord.

We can’t fake relationship with God. Eventually it will come out. It always does. When we make a choice to live for him all see it, and many will always question or test its validity.

This isn’t a story of a man who made bad decisions but rather a man who never took the time to walk with God himself. We can’t live off the walk others have.

  18. 2 Chronicles 24:19, “Yet he sent prophets to them, to bring them again unto the LORD; and they testified against them: but they would not give ear.”

I pray, every soul who comes to church (Western Day) tomorrow, will “give ear” to what the man of God is speaking. May every ear be opened and hear the Word of God.

  19. 20 And the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, which stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of the Lord, that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken the Lord, he hath also forsaken you.

Several times since ive been gone, people have come out of the wood works telling me that i was wrong and i need to get my life back in line with the word of God! I know i was wrong and they were right! I cant wait til im home where I belong with my God, My Husband and My Church!

  20. The work of the house of the Lord will be done by his people. If we are to help others, God’s people must first get their house in order. We don’t have time to waste, God is soon to come.

  21. “For the sons of Athaliah, that wicked woman, had broken up the house of God; and also all the dedicated things of the house of the Lord did they bestow upon Baalim.” The word of God (Judge) records she was a wicked woman. One would be very wise to seek the Lord on whom is wicked in his sight. Dear God, expose and remove those you decree as wicked. God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  22. “For the army of the Syrians came with a small company of men, and the Lord delivered a very great host into their hand, because they had forsaken the Lord God of their fathers. So they executed judgment against Joash.” They turned their backs on the Lord, which they paid greatly. We should be mindful and remember, for surely the Lord records and remembers all. God help us too not only be right but also stay right with you, in Jesus name.

  23. 4 And it came to pass after this, that Joash was minded to repair the house of the Lord.

So many times we set it in our minds to do something yet we fail to follow through. Good intentions are just intentions if we do not follow through and put a plan in place to make sure it continues beyound is.

We must be willing to go the extra mile to insure the vision lives beyound our years.

  24. To raise money for the repairs, they enforce the temple tax of Moses. This was the tax all makes over 20 paid (if I’m not mistaken). Religious studies will tell you that you study the practice of religion in greater weight than its theology. For instance, Islam can be studied as a religion of peace when you observe Muslims who live peacefully and disregard violent texts in the Koran. In ancient Judaism, it is interesting to note the difference in phenomenology and theology and orthopraxy and orthodoxy and what they actually did. Before the exhale, Jews where theologically monotheists but in practice they were henotheists.

We find ourselves in similar boats. We theologically believe one thing and practice another.

  25. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side. It takes work and trust to sustain a relationship that goes beyond formalities. Build a relationship with God and do not lose sight of His love and promises.

  26. 17 Now after the death of Jehoiada came the princes of Judah, and made obeisance to the king.

Give ear to what has been preached to you. Learn and apply the word and do not turn off the voice of the man of God when he is not there or no longer there.

  27. 1 Joash was seven years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem forty years. His mother was Zibiah from Beersheba.

You never know when God will use someone. Whether your young, middle age or old, God can use anyone. Only seven years old, Joash knew God and followed in his ways. Its up to us, to lead and show our children how to pray and worship God.

  28. 2 Chronicles 27: Jotham was twentyfive years old when he became king and he reigned in Jerusalem sixteen years. His mother’s name was Jerusha daughter of Zadok. He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord just as his father Uzziah had done but unlike him he did not enter the temple of the Lord. The people however continued their corrupt practices. Jotham rebuilt the Upper Gate of the Temple of the Lord and did exclusive work on all the wall at the hill of Ophel.

  29. “For the sons of Athaliah, that wicked woman, had broken up the house of God; and also all the dedicated things of the house of the Lord did they bestow upon Baalim. And at the king’s commandment they made a chest, and set it without at the gate of the house of the Lord. And they made a proclamation through Judah and Jerusalem, to bring in to the Lord the collection that Moses the servant of God laid upon Israel in the wilderness.”
    ‭‭2 Chronicles‬ ‭24:7-9

    Why things are done.
Sometimes people only see the things that are on the surface. They might not understand fully if hey don’t know it all. The collections were not taken to make someone rich, but to bring glory and honor to the things that should be dedicated unto the Lord.
