Matthew 17

And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart,

And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.

And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him.

Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.

While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.

And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid.

And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid.

And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only.

And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead.

10 And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come?

11 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things.

12 But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.

13 Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist.

14 And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying,

15 Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water.

16 And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him.

17 Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me.

18 And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour.

19 Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out?

20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

21 Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.

22 And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men:

23 And they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again. And they were exceeding sorry.

24 And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute?

25 He saith, Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers?

26 Peter saith unto him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free.

27 Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.

  1. And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute? He saith, Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers?
    Matthew 17:24‭-‬25 KJV

As people, we like our privacy. We often have different demeanors in front of different people, and we get angry if someone listens in on something that we didn’t intend them to overhear.

Peter, probably out of fear, responded to those confronting him that Jesus did pay tribute money. He said it to get out of an uncomfortable situation and most likely thinking that that would be the end of it. However, he didn’t realize that Jesus was listening.

Jesus is always listening and watching even when we think He is not around. I wonder what Peter would have answered if he had realized that Jesus hears all. I wonder how many of my own conversations would have gone differently if I had remembered that Jesus was present.

If we truly understood that we take Jesus with us everywhere we go, that He is present in our private and public times, that He sees what we see, listens to what we listen to, and becomes a witness to all that we do; would we live, act, and speak differently? What would we change? Since He is everpresent, ought not we to change those things now?

  2. And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart,

2 And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.

6 And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid.

7 And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid.

8 And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only.

9 And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead.

10 And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come?

11 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things.

13 Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist.

Now the disciples beheld somewhat of Christ’s glory, as of the only begotten of the Father. It was intended to support their faith, when they would have to witness his crucifixion; and would give them an idea of the glory prepared for them, when changed by his power and made like him. The apostles were overcome by the glorious sight. Peter thought that it was most desirable to continue there, and to go no more down to meet the sufferings of which he was so unwilling to hear. In this he knew not what he said. We are wrong, if we look for a heaven here upon earth. Whatever tabernacles we propose to make for ourselves in this world, we must always remember to ask Christ’s leave. That sacrifice was not yet offered, without which the souls of sinful men could not have been saved; and important services were to be done by Peter and his brethren. While Peter spoke, a bright cloud overshadowed them, an emblem of the Divine presence and glory. Ever since man sinned, and heard God’s voice in the garden, unusual appearances of God have been terrible to man. They fell prostrate to the earth, till Jesus encouraged them; when looking round, they beheld only their Lord as they commonly saw him. We must pass through varied experiences in our way to glory; and when we return to the world after an ordinance, it must be our care to take Christ with us, and then it may be our comfort that he is with us.

  3. Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee. Matthew 17:27 KJV
Jesus used Peter’s old profession to provide for the tax money. He was teaching Peter that He would miraculously supply all his need. Nobody understood how much of a miracle this was like Peter the fisherman did. Our God is amazing!

  4. 19 Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out?
20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

  5. Matthew 17:1 & 2
1 And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart,
2 And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.

    3 And, behold,

  6. 24 And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute?

25 He saith, Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers?

26 Peter saith unto him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free.

27 Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.

Are we His children free??? We must pay tribute to the King of kings and Lord of lords, so pay your tithe and offerings unto Jesus so you may not offend Him.

  7. Prayer and fasting gets the job done. This reminds us that it can’t be us that gets the sick healed or it can’t be us that makes the lame walk. Yes we do need to be spiritual. We have to be spiritual. There can be no flesh when it comes to kingdom work.

  8. Matthew 17

17 1-3 Six days later, three of them saw that glory. Jesus took Peter and the brothers, James and John, and led them up a high mountain. His appearance changed from the inside out, right before their eyes. Sunlight poured from his face. His clothes were filled with light. Then they realized that Moses and Elijah were also there in deep conversation with him.
6-8 When the disciples heard it, they fell flat on their faces, scared to death. But Jesus came over and touched them. “Don’t be afraid.” When they opened their eyes and looked around all they saw was Jesus, only him.

It Jesus changing us from the inside out. Father thank you for peace and the love You show .

  9. Verses 6-8 MSG “When the disciples heard it, they fell flat on their faces, scared to death. But Jesus came over and touched them. “Don’t be afraid.” When they opened their eyes and looked around all they saw was Jesus, only Jesus.” These verses made me think in a different light; how sometimes we get distracted by what we may see; but, in reality we should always keep our focus on Jesus, only Jesus. We cannot allow fear from loneliness, worry or let a powerless feeling overcome us, as “Jesus Rescues”.

  10. Faith, Prayer, and Fasting

The Kingdom of God is for everyone. Yet there are places in the kingdom that may people dont want to go to because of the sacrifices that would be asked. For a person in the army, they are told to relinquish certain things when they first go in, and if they decide to progress through the ranks, they are told to let go of other things. Just as in the kingdom of God, to deeper we go in our relationship with God, the more he requires us to let go of,of our past self. So the true question is, how much are you willing to let go of, in order to see His Kingdom Established?

  11. St. Matthew 17:6-7
    6) And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their faces, and were sore afraid.
    7) And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid.

We learned in VBS this past week that when we are lonely, worried, or powerless… JESUS RESCUES.
When we are afraid… JESUS RESCUES. All it takes is a touch from Him.

  12. 10 And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come?
11 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things.
12 But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.
13 Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist

To really understand the word of God and the prophesies to be fulfilled, we must get beyond our own limited understanding. In the text, the reason why they hadn’t seen Jesus as the Messiah is their belief about Elias coming first, and their ignorance of of it’s fulfillment thru John the Baptist. When God has told or promised us something, we should pray for discernment that we will see thru Gods purpose rather than our limited expectation

  13. 20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

21 Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.

Many people get excited over the first verse without ever getting to the second.

  14. 20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

Jesus said it was because of their unbelief… but how can that be with Jesus Himself standing before them and after all the things they’ve seen? The next verse says this kind of faith is only built up through prayer and fasting. Essentially, they busted themselves and can too. If something isn’t quite going the way you expect, one you need to trust God, but two, you also should give yourself a little check up! Are you staying spiritually disciplined and daily communing with the Lord? Are you building up your faith? Hope so! This world needs to see it!

  15. And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.
    Matthew 17:20 KJV
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
    Hebrews 11:6 KJV

  16. 17:12 But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.
    ————-
…… and they knew him not…
They missed it, they couldn’t recognized the times.
I wonder how many times that has happened to us, when God sent the man of God with an specific word, and we don’t recognized it, we just missed the answer, of that petition, we just missed his guidence on that certain matter, we missed the direction….we missed his purpose

  17. 20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.
21 Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.

Jesus shows us that we may have prayed about a situation and yet have unbelief over whether He will move on it and resolve the problem or deliver the person from Satan’s grip. But after prayer with fasting as found in Isaiah 58:6, the Lords will for those bound or bruised will be helped and the captive set free.

  18. 20 So Jesus said to them, Because of your unbelief, for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, move from here to there, and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you. However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.

  19. iLove the Kingdom
20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

Wow, I just really caught this…Many folks try to make excuse of why things don’t happen. Right here the disciples come to Jesus and ask point blank, “Why could we not cast it out?” Jesus doesn’t say, “Well, because they need to repent first…or well, if God delivered them they would backslide…or well, maybe next service…” Jesus tells them point blank “Because of your unbelief.” They didn’t argue, but they understood Jesus was right.

    We all need more faith.
Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.

  20. “You don’t have enough faith,” Jesus told them. “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible. ”
    Matthew 17:20 NLT

Our ‘unbelief can keep the church from moving forward in the KINGDOM of GOD moving forward.

“I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father.
    John 14:12 NLT

  21. 20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

21 Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.

We must crucify our flesh through prayer and fasting so that faith is evident and doubt and fear are not present. The man presented his son and had the faith that the disciples could heal him, but nothing happened so the man went straight to the Master himself.

We don’t want people coming to us for needs, and we not be prepared that they go away the same way they came because of our faith. If they have the faith to come, we must have the power working within us through prayer and fasting for the Spirit of God to move through us and accomplish His will.

  22. Matthew 17:12-13 (English Amp) But I tell you that Elijah has come already, and they did not know or recognize him, but did to him as they liked. So also the Son of Man is going to be treated and suffer at their hands. [13] Then the disciples understood that He spoke to them about John the Baptist. God had already send a prophet , before the great and terrible day, of the Lord coming . We must get ourselves ready. We must repent and worshipfully fear God and live and do his commandments. Just do it ! In Jesus name.

  23. THY KINGDOM COME
    KINGDOM HINDERANCE

20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

The WORD of GOD reveals that unbelief is the hinderance to Miracles in The Kingdom of GOD.

In chapter 13 of Matthew JESUS reveals why he did not do many mighty works.

Matthew 13:58 And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.
    UNBELIEF

In Matthew 17 JESUS reveals why disciples did not do mighty works.
    UNBELIEF

However JESUS reveals the antidote or answer to Mighty Works.

    FAITH

FAITH is Kingdom Currency and OBEDIENCE is how we gain it.

27 Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.

Everyone knows that they are called piggy bank not fish bank. JESUS gave specific instructions on how FAITH operates. HE used the natural to supply the supoernatural.

KINGDOM CURRENCY in found in OBEDIENCE.

  24. “And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.”
    ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭17:20-21‬ ‭KJV‬‬

This is why we must have a prayer life and have days we fast. The scriptures say this faith is acquired through prayer and fasting. You want you to be used y the gifts of the Sprit pray for those gifts, fast for those gifts. When you pray and when you fast and God fulfills these prayers before your very eyes of course your faith will be raised. Now do this and develop a relationship with Christ and see this often your faith will raise higher…..this is how faith is lifted

    Through prayer

    And through fasting.

  25. 20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

21 Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.

We put more faith in our mountains by always talking about our problems and believing that they’re still going to be there, than we put in God in believing that He can remove them!
When you are facing a problem that seems as big and immovable as a mountain, turn your eyes from the mountain and look to Christ for more faith.

But this faith isn’t going to come without works, it won’t come without sacrifice. We have to be willing to get our flesh out of way in order to step into that great of faith!

  26. 19 Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out?

20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

21 Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.

  27. 2 And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.

Jesus is the everlasting life the true king of Kings! He is the light in the darkness! God knows all about light because he is light the Son! Jesus will over power all darkness!

  28. 19 Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out?
20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.
21 Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.
If we want to be used of God and do more for him, there must be less of us. As we decrease, He increases.
He alone must receive all of the praise, honor and glory.

  29. This passage is interesting and even thought provoking. ‘And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute? He saith, Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers?’ The word money here is added for our understanding. The text refers to those looking for tribute, which could be satisfied in a number of forms… Jesus clearly choose to do so with money from the fish’s mouth. But Peter had responded in passing without giving it much thought. Of course we give tribute, and would have walked on… even though he had no tribute to offer.

Jesus addresses his statement first. Peter just accepted the thinking of the day that all were bound and had to give tribute to those who had the rule over them. We however are the children of God and bound to no man in tribute! We need to go forth with the midset that we are truly children of the king! That does not free us from our rulers on earth. Jesus had Peter retrieve their tribute from the fish and would later state that we give unto ceasar the things that belong to him. We have to live in the world and pray for those God has allowed to rule among us, but we cannot afford for their thinking to pervade our own! We give the tribute God provides that we don’t offend as we go about his labor! Our labor however is unto the Lord! Our providence is from the Lord! Our service is unto the Lord! Because the other portion of his response was to give unto God the things that are God’s! Our true tribute should always be first unto him!

  30. 27 Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.

God has a way of making a way where there seems to be none. All one has to do is obey is commands and listen for he will guide and provide what one needs.

  31. Matthew 17:27
Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.

He came to fulfill the law spiritual and law and man law. Jesus is awesome!

  32. 21 Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.

I’ve always thought that Jesus was talking about the kind of spirit that this child possessed. That the more prayer and fasting done would give you that much more authority in the Spirit. And it does!

But if we analyze this closer, is Jesus referring to the “kind” of faith? It was there lack of faith that keep them from casting the demon out, then Jesusrebuked them for not haveing the devotional life that gives the “kind” of Faith needed to cast out devils!

The truth is the devil is defeated! He is subject to the name of Jesus! What gets in our way is our lack of Faith. So Jesus said, you need prayer and fasting to have the “kind” of faith needed.

  33. 20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

We cannot operate in the kingdom of God with unbelief in our hearts. In small faith can do great things, then great faith can do all the more. God can only use us as far as we are willing to believe him.

  34. 1 And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart,

2 And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.

3 And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him.

4 Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.

In our walk with God, there will be high mountains He will take us through in the process of fulfilling His will. It’s not easy, it’s hard work and it may be tiring at times. But we don’t walk alone, God is right beside us guiding every step we take. He will strengthen us, give us peace, and refresh us with His presence. And in the end, it will all be worth it and we will have a deeper understanding on how GOOD God’s work is.

  35. 11 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things.

12 But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.

13 Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist.

Some revelations come only from Jesus…

  36. Mysteries Revealed

“And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come? And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things. But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them. Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist.”
    ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭17:10-13‬ ‭KJV‬‬

The scriptures are the written word of God. They are for us to read, learn, listen, and obey. Sometimes there are things in the scriptures that are not easy to understand. That is when you read again. The way to have the mysteries of the word revealed is to spend more time with God. He will bring clarity. It comes is reading, prayer, meditation, and the study of his word. These three close friends to Jesus had the scriptures revealed to them because of their walk with Christ. That is how we will have the scriptures revealed to us as well. We must walk with Christ.

  37. 19 Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.
20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.
The power of agreement- It only takes two or three to bring His presence in a powerful way so what happens when we come together as a church in agreement for God to have His way and sinners to be added to the church such as should be saved?
