Luke 14

And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him.

And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy.

And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?

And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go;

And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day?

And they could not answer him again to these things.

And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them.

When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him;

And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.

10 But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.

11 For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

12 Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee.

13 But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:

14 And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.

15 And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.

16 Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many:

17 And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.

18 And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.

19 And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused.

20 And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.

21 So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind.

22 And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.

23 And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.

24 For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.

25 And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them,

26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

27 And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?

29 Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him,

30 Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.

31 Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?

32 Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace.

33 So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

34 Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned?

35 It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

  1. Verses 10-11 MSG “When you’re invited to dinner, go and sit at the last place. Then when the host comes he may very well say, ‘Friend, come up to the front.’ That will give the dinner guests something to talk about! What I’m saying is, If you walk around with your nose in the air, you’re going to end up flat on your face. But if you’re content to be simply yourself, you will become more than yourself.”

Verse 27 AMP “Whoever does not carry his own cross [expressing a willingness to endure whatever may come] and follow after Me [believing in Me, conforming to My example in living and, if need be, suffering or perhaps dying because of faith in Me] cannot be My disciple.” Follow after Christ as 1 Corinthians 11:1-2 MSG says “It pleases me that you continue to remember and honor me by keeping up the traditions of the faith I taught you. All actual authority stems from Christ.”

  2. If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple. So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.
    Luke 14:26‭-‬27‭, ‬33 KJV

Thank you Lord for your word! It allows me to see where i teuly am. Help me Lord to fully bear my cross, follow you, and be your disciple!!!

  3. He taught that a true disciple must bear his own cross and follow Him. The cross is not some physical infirmity or mental ,but is a pathway of reproach ,suffering, loneliness, and even death which a person voluntanly chooses for Christ’s sake.sible to avoid it by lining a nominal Chrstian life. But if we determine to be all out for Christ, we will experience the same kind of satanclic opposition which the son of God knew when He was here on earth . This is the cross . The disciple must come after Christ . This means that he must live the type of life which Christ lined when He was here on earth a life of selr-renuciation, humiliation ,persecution, reproach temptation, and contradiction, of sinners against Himself.

  4. Luke 14

  5. Jesus makes an analogy here that is often used as an example in the physical, but his application was a spiritual one. He said ‘For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it? Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him, Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.’ It is easy for us to relate to this in the physical sense, and we certainly want to properly prepare ourselves for whatever we set about to do in the kingdom of God.

The statement preceding this analogy however is, ‘And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.’ He was referring to a mindset of his followers. They weren’t those who just got excited about what God was going to do, they were those who had made a conscious choice they were going to complete that which they had started. They recognized the effort, they recognized the commitment, they were looking at the long term end and were still willing to do what it takes to get there!

This is reinforced in the second analogy that is given. No one who chooses his path is going to be free from opposition. The enemy is going to come against them, and he is going to be ready to fight. That is why Jesus said ‘Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand? Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace.’ He wanted his followers to recognize they were in a spiritual war and to have made up their minds that they were willing to fight with the recognition that they were on the winning side!

Regardless of what the enemy does, we are here to serve him! We’ve counted the cost, and chosen to follow him! We’ve seen the spiritual forces arrayed against us and counted him that is with us to be greater than he that is in the world. We have a made up mind that recognizes ‘So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.’ We are willing to give all to him because he gave all for us!

  6. 14:14 And thou shall be blessed: for they can not
Recompense thee: for thou shall be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.

  7. Luke 14 : 26-27 (English Amp) If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his [ own] father and mother
[ in the sense of indifference to or relative disregard for them in comparison with his attitude toward God and likewise his wife and children and brothers and sisters- [ yes] and even his own life also he cannot be My disciple. You are suppose to love Jesus more than anybody or anything in your life .We must be willing to give all to him, Because he gave it all to us. Pick up your cross and follow Jesus everyday of your life. I blessed you in the name of Jesus.

  8. 10 But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.
11 For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

James 4 says resist the devil and he will flee from us and to humble ourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he all exalt us. It’s is God’s job to exalt us and our job to humble ourselves, when we do our job, God will do his, when we exalt ourselves, then God humbles us

  9. Humility such a sweet sounding word and sometimes difficult to achieve. The Lord is speaking with the Pharisees that invited him into his home. Jesus knew their hearts so He began with the controversy to heal or not to heal on the Sabbath. He goes as far as to compare it to rescuing a lost animal. As to say which it’s more valuable a men’s well being or an animal. He tries so hard to teach humility to even go to the details of where should you seat at a wedding. He was the greatest example of Humility the King of kings, and Lord of lords was born at a manger, to the household of a carpenter, and grew in humility even after knowing who He was and what’s his purpose was on this Earth. Lord help us know our place and make sure we reflect your humility in our lives. In Jesus Name Amen

  10. 26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

    Deuteronomy 6:4-7(NKJV)
4 “Hear, O Israel: [a]The Lord our God, the Lord is one!
5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
6 “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart.
7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.
    HALELUJAH!!! WITH MY ALLLLL!!!

  11. 27 And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

If we want to be a disciple of Jesus sometimes we are going to have to carry the cross. I believe this cross here can be the cross of pain of sorrow or loneliness. So when Jesus said if you want to be my disciple pick up your cross he was saying it’s going to be hard at times lonely but there is a prize at the end we get to be his disciple.

  12. 11 For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted

27 An33 So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple

.34 Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned?
35 It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.d whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

  13. 23 Then the Master said to the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compell them to come in, that my house may be filled. For I say to you that none of those men who were invited shall taste my supper.

  14. “Salt is good for seasoning. But if it loses its flavor, how do you make it salty again? Flavorless salt is good neither for the soil nor for the manure pile. It is thrown away. Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand!”
    Luke 14:34‭-‬35 NLT

We can’t lose our flavor. If we do we are good for nothing. How do we keep that flavor alive? Constant refreshing and walking in the Spirit, prayer, fasting, eating the Word, ministering and loving on God’s people, being a blessing to others. Hallelujah!

  15. Luke 14

They are going to be depressed, wounded, physically, mentally, emotionally ill . Will we the church turn them away ? When Jesus says bring them in. Are we too weak or too piously high into self that we are not equipped for those God is wanting to heal. Healing comes within the body. We will have to put our selfish ways away. We will have to do it differently than the way we use to do things. We will have to become truly Christ like if we are going to run the lost. Many fall between the cracks, baby get swept out , many are misplaced and soon forgotten.

    Mark 2:17
    English Standard Version
And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Tormented within no one can feel
    the pain but me

Broken and left on the street to die
Hair matted with dirt face full of fear
scantly clothed ifrom the waist up
crouched down by the roadside with nothing to cover the rest of her body naked and beaten down
as the rain poured down that cold morning
She appeared to be out of her mind with nowhere to go . To the amazement of the bystander no one spoke to her nor seemed to be aware of her predicament. Quickly the bystander ran to get some clothes from the cottage she was staying in . Water and warm clothes something to eat . As the rain continued to pour down and the cold wind blew she felt so helpless . This was all she could do was to offer all she had. Not knowing the language of the one who was in such need as she approached she did not want to startle this wounded young woman who had been left to die all alone. Yet all it took was an outstretched hand to draw her attention to what was being given to her. Immediately her hand reached out grade the bystanders hand and gladly received all she had to offer. Knowing this was all she would legally be allowed to do broke her heart.

As she held her hand she took one more risk knowing that she could be arrested for speaking on the street the name of Jesus she quickly and quietly but yet with a spiritual authority spoke peace In Jesus name. Walking away was the most difficult task as the bystander let go of the wounded souls hand. As the bystander walked away tears streaming down her face she stepped into the vehicle where the others were waiting for her . She asked the question why and the reply was. she is just one of hundreds here in our country left to die on the street. As the bystander bowed her head as the car pulled away she carried a sorrow within her heart and a reminder on her hands as she looked down her hands were covered in dirt from the clasp of the young woman she had just left.
Tears falling she recalled an old song When the Savior Reached down for me I was lost and alone.
That cold rainy day is still impressed into my memory and every ones in awile God reminds me of the dirt that was left on my hands that day in the country if Krgystan.
We live in a country where we can speak the name of Jesus and we cannot be afraid to get our hands dirty . Will we will I be willing to answer the call the commission to go out into the world and compel them. I pray so in Jesus name.

  16. THY KINGDOM COME
    THE HIGH COST OF DISCIPLESHIP

33 So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

In the Kigndom of GOD there is high value placed on relationship. JESUS gave his human life for us so that we could enjoy eternal life with HIM. The expectation that JESUS placed on that death is the expectation that HIS Disciples place no greater value on relationship with anything or anyone in this earth than we place on our relationship with JESUS.

Painfully for this life there are people in our lives that choose not to walk with JESUS in obedience as we do. This places us in a unique position occasionally to choose our eternal relationship with JESUS over our temporal relationship with others; including, family, friends, neighbors, etc.

GOD is a jealous GOD and desires our full submission to HIM.

    Exodus 20:5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

This is where prayer and daily devotions play such an important role in our lives. When we pray everyday and read the WORD of GOD everyday we are better condoned relationally to choose JESUS over anything and everyone and everything else.

JESUS is not saying that we have “cut off” ourselves from everyone else in our lives. But, he is saying that our desire to follow HIM must be greater than our desire for anything else on this earth, including:

26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
27 And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

For this cause we “Seek FIRST the Kingdom of GOD and HIS righteousness”.

Lets take up our cross and follow JESUS.

  17. St. Luke 14:18-20, 26-27, & 33 (msg)
    18) Then they all began to beg off, one after another making excuses. The first said, I bought a piece of property and need to look it over. Send my regrets.
    19) Another said, I just bought five teams of oxen, and I really need to check them out. Send my regrets.
    20) And yet another said, I just got married and need to get home to my wife.

    26) Anyone who comes to me but refuses to let go of father, mother, spouse, children, brothers, sisters – yes, even one’s own self! – can’t be my disciple.
    27) Anyone who won’t shoulder his own cross and follow behind me can’t be my disciple.

    33) Simply put, if you’re not willing to take what is dearest to you, whether plans or people, and kiss it good-bye, you can’t be my disciple.

  18. This chapter is filled with excuses why people choose not to come to the table the Master had prepared. Excuses are a dime a dozen these days. Everyone of us has excuses for things we don’t want to do just because……

We must not become so complacent in our relationship with the Lord and choose the way of apathy instead of being on fire for the Lord and truly following Him and being obedient to what He asks of us.

Bidding people to come to worship Him should be our way of life, our lifestyle – everywhere we go, everyone we meet. Yet many times we are only concerned to get ourselves to the House of God, and sometimes not even concerned to come ourselves, let alone bring someone with us.

Jesus prepares a table of His wonderful Word each time we gather together. It should be our heartbeat to not only come eager and hungry to hear what He speaks each time, but bring others with us so they can enjoy the same experience.

  19. 11 For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” NLT

Hard work and dedication will always be more rewarding than taking the shortcut.
Do the work, and allow God to be your reward!

  20. 16 Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many:
17 And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.
18 And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.

Is there something or someone we put first before God? Like Pastor said, God is a jealous God …and anything we put first before Him becomes an idol. And that thing/person is temporal and is not worth missing Heaven for!
“And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” Joshua 24:15

  21. 21 So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things.

There is room in the house of God for everybody!!! Regardless of who they were, they were still called. The first group just chose to reject the opportunity, all for lame earthly pleasing reasons. But those who were called from pain and suffering, those from afar off, were hungry and probably grateful to even be considered worthy of the invitation. We were those people but there are also still so many of them out there. Sure there’s also still those too caught up in themselves to care and will reject you, but there’s so many more who are hungry and awaiting the opportunity to know Him!!

  22. iLove the Kingdom
1 And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him…

Notice in the verse here it states that “they watched him”

The very next verse it says, “And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy.”

    Notice the words, “Before Him”.

So, let’s put it all together now. Jesus was at the Pharisees house and across from him was a man with the dropsy…and they were watching…watching very carefully. Does this sound like a set up to you? Then look what the Word says, “Jesus answered”. Who asked a question?

This is a prime example of the lives we live as Christians. It seems as if folks are always watching and listening to catch us in something they can condemn us in. Well, it’s true they are but Jesus will always give you a way of escape with the Word of Truth.

  23. Luke 14:34,35
“Simply put, if you’re not willing to take what is dearest to you, whether plans or people, and miss it goodbye, you can’t be my disciple.
“Salt is excellent. But if the salt goes flat, it’s useless, good for nothing. “Are you listening to this? Really listening?”

Matthew 5:13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, where with shall it be salted? It is thenchforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

Mark 9:50 Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will he season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.

  24. ,26“If you want to be my disciple, you must hate everyone else by comparison—your father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be my disciple.

Does this really mean you must hate your own relatives? Probably not, but you must not allow your family members to influence you about being a disciple of God. Family members will tell, “don’t go to church, they are to controlling, telling you what to do, you always at church”. That’s when you should not like what they’re telling you and ignore them, and continue being a disciple.

  25. Can we be great people in life if we don’t learn how to deal with the struggles. As humans we turn to things to make us feel better, distractions that only last a little while. Lead a life of faith, so you can lead others in a life of faith. Whether we know it or not but our biggest downfall as humans is that instead of putting our faith in God, we put our faith into habits that are only temporary, and then they become the thing you worship. Remember who made you and know that he had a purpose for you to do great things. If your struggling, if your in pain, or if you just want to let loose, Give it to God give God glory in everything. Reflect God in everything and that great purpose you have in life will come into play and it will lead others to do the same.

  26. For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
    Luke 14:11 KJV
Humility defeats pride. Jesus’ life is one of humility from birth to death. He became a servant so we could reign as kings and priests with Him. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
    Philippians 2:5‭-‬8 KJV
What suffering, such sacrifice and pain! Such love and grace as never seen and demonstrated before or ever will be. Yet what did all that accomplish? Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
    Philippians 2:9‭-‬11 KJV
Truly He is Lord of all!

  27. “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his own father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters — yes, and even his own life — he cannot be My disciple. Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. “For which of you, wanting to build a tower, doesn’t first sit down and calculate the cost to see if he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, after he has laid the foundation and cannot finish it, all the onlookers will begin to make fun of him, saying, ‘This man started to build and wasn’t able to finish.’ In the same way, therefore, every one of you who does not say good-bye to all his possessions cannot be My disciple.
    Luke 14:26‭-‬30‭, ‬33 HCSB

Christianity was never meant to be a half-hearted endeavor. From the beginning, following Christ was an all or nothing proposition. Christians were burned at the stake, fed to the lions, persecuted, hunted, and stoned to death. They had to come together and unite for any chance of survival.
Jesus wanted everyone to know exactly what it could cost them to be His disciple. He wanted no double-minded or lukewarm men to call themselves followers. I shudder at the comparison of the first church compared to that of today. No wonder Revelations warns:

Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.
    Revelation 2:4‭-‬5 KJV

    and

I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.
    Revelation 3:15‭-‬16 KJV

  28. Josiah: 33 So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.
Peoples perception of what matters is generally mixed up. We should always be willing to forsake earthly riches and follow Jesus. Nothing on this world matters if we do not have Jesus. So, let us GO SEEK THE LORD!

  29. 29 Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him,
30 Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.

Count the cost. Is it worth it? Is worth the sacrifice? What ever you are doing count the cost and if the price is too high put it back on the shelf.

  30. I learned that a woman had ten coins and lost one and she searched the house and found it and called everybody to rejoice

  31. 18 And they all with one consent began to make excuse.

Excuses excuses excuses! I have em and we all have them, but in al reality we need to work on turning those into praise and worship and work!

  32. 15 And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.

Let’s talk about that spiritual bread🥖
This word is what every new believer is hungry for, we need to GO BACK TO THE BASICS where we all were starving for this word. The time when we would get lost in this word because we finally found the answers to every single problem known to man. I’m thinking we make it a little difficult to help people when all the answers are right in front of us. I’m thinking we make it a little difficult to help ourselves when the answer is right in front of us. We can’t just go to church and be saved we have to put action to these sermons. We have to put action to what we take in, to what we’re reading. We have to continue to be crumb snatchers and EAT THIS BOOK!

  33. 33 So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

The price of discipleship is to lose your life and find Him. Give it all away surrender it to Jesus.
