Psalm 16

1 Preserve me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust.

O my soul, thou hast said unto the Lord, Thou art my Lord: my goodness extendeth not to thee;

But to the saints that are in the earth, and to the excellent, in whom is all my delight.

Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another god: their drink offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their names into my lips.

The Lord is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot.

The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage.

I will bless the Lord, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons.

I have set the Lord always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope.

10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

    • We need the presence of The Lord in our lives.

Lord, return the joy of our salvation and let us be full of your presence.

  2. This chapter illustrates knowing. David was well aware of whom God was, and that God was aware who he was. One may know God, however the real question is does God know us. May the good Lord Bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  3. 9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope.

10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

There is great JOY in staying with the Lord. You always hear about how God took me out of this or that; but there is a great testimony in staying with the Lord and never departing from His right hand. The psalm begins with an acclamation of petition “1 Preserve me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust.” When I look upon our children that have been raised in the faith, joy fills my heart, for the world today is much harder than it used to be and they have had the courage to stand on their faith determine to serve the ONE TRUE GOD. Keep it up young people, be Preserved by God.

  4. 7 I will bless the Lord, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons.

    Psalm 103:1 (KJV)
Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.

For He blesses me continually and He is worthy…and his holy name is JESUS!

  5. Psalm 16:10-11 MSG

I’m happy from the inside out, and from the outside in, I’m firmly formed. You canceled my ticket to hell— that’s not my destination!
Now you’ve got my feet on the life path, all radiant from the shining of your face. Ever since you took my hand, I’m on the right way.
    March 16 1997,
The Day that the Lord changed my life. Feb 14 I had prayed a prayer that went like this…”Lord I don’t want to live this life anymore, I was raised in this type of environment (alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, etc,) and I don’t want to raise my children like that.” As a child though we had everything that one could want, there was still.a void in my life, and Only ONE filled that void in March, and that was Jesus Christ. I had never felt so alive, so full of Joy, yes I was filed with the Holy Ghost! Glory To God!!! Thankful for the Blood of the Lamb!

  6. Not putting our trust in the Lord leads to trouble we cannot handle. Following God’s plan will lead to joy and happiness in all situations.

  7. 7 I will bless the Lord, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons.

The word of God is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. If we will live by the instructions therein, the reins will of His word will guide our path and help us in every situation.

We must choose to listen and obey.

  8. CHOOSE JESUS!

7 I will bless the Lord, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons.

GOD is so confident and compassionate that he will give us the power of choice to make the decision of whether we want ot serve him or not. Our decision has daily opportunities to forsake the ONE true living GOD and try other gods. The psalmist is declaring in verse 5 that those days are over for him.

5 The Lord is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot.

Based on previous performance, JESUS is the clear choice! Especially in the night seasons of life; choose JESUS! He is the LIGHT of the world.

I am reminded of the popular words of Joshua:

Joshua 24:15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

To sum up this chapter the MSG version states it very clearly:

5-6 My choice is you, God, first and only.
And now I find I’m your choice!
You set me up with a house and yard.
And then you made me your heir!
7-8 The wise counsel God gives when I’m awake
is confirmed by my sleeping heart.
    Day and night I’ll stick with God;
I’ve got a good thing going and I’m not letting go.
9-10 I’m happy from the inside out,
and from the outside in, I’m firmly formed.
You canceled my ticket to hell—
    that’s not my destination!

In these waining days of 2012, let us purpose in our hearts and minds to “Seek FIRST the Kingdom of GOD and HIS righteousness” and let’s Do IT

  9. v11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore .

The LORD has and never will make a promise that HE cannot keep.
” For ALL the promises of GOD in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.” 2 COR. 1: 20

GOD promised that the result of HIS presence in our lives would bring fulness of joy.
We can have that joy in the Holy Ghost.
HE is our strength , peace, and comfort
in good and in bad times.

We find in HIS WORD and through the preaching of the word direct promises from GOD. Keep confessing our confidence in HIS promises ( HIS WORD) this moves us toward receiving it. Thank You JESUS!

I obey and serve the LORD, therefore, I spend my days in prosperity and my years in pleasure. JOB 36:11

  10. 7 I will bless the Lord, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons.

In times of testing, “the night season,” we must remember all theat we have been taught. The tests that we go through, God has set in place for us to go through.

  11. 8 I have set the Lord always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

I shall not be moved, like a tree planted by the water, I want to be rooted deeply into the word of God.

  12. 8 I have set the Lord always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

When we keep our focus on him it does not matter what is going on around us!

As long as Peter kept his eys on Christ he didn’t sink!

  13. 8 I have set the Lord always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall. not be moved.

The Lord is always before him, he is always leading, guiding, and/or taking presidence in his life. He has given power. The right hand is not literal, but the power of God. When God’s power is with you, man/situations can’t move you. –Nicole

The fullness of God is powerful. That is why Jesus figuratively sits at the right hand of God. David did not have God sitting at his right hand, just like God does not have Jesus sitting at his right hand. But all power rests in Jesus.

I don’t get false doctrine that teaches that Jesus is separate from God. Did they read their whole Bible or do they just carry it around in their right hand? Ha! Ha!

  14. Psalm 16:8-9
I bless the Lord and He is continually before me ; because He is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. Therefore my heart is glad and my glory [ my inner self] rejoices ; my body my too shall rest and confidently dwell in safety. Thank You for being the Lord of my life. Amen!

  15. Hunger

11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

There’s a hunger down inside each of us that will only ever be satisfied by God. He is more than anything this world has to offer yet that is a fact that too many struggle to truly accept. It can be easy to receive on a head level but difficult to catch on a heart level.

8 I have set the Lord always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope.

It does, however, boil down to a choice. We have the option to *choose* to believe, no matter our feelings. This chapter describes that choice as putting the Lord always before you and having Him at your right hand (authority.) V9 follows, “therefore…”, because of the *choice*, “therefore my heart is glad…” Too often we seek the “therefore” without first dealing with the matter of choice.

Choice means selecting one at the cost of eliminating others. It’s easy to want to keep options open but hard to put all our eggs in one basket and risk it not working out. But that’s where faith comes in. Our choice to trust God is rooted in faith, that is why we can choose to trust even when our feelings scream otherwise. Through faith and choice, we step into fullness of joy and pleasures for evermore as found through relationship with God. When we choose faith, we can step beyond natural sorrows and receive a supernatural payoff.

  16. Psalm 16

I will bless the Lord, who hath given me counsel:
my reins also instruct me in the night seasons.

This verse reminded me of a phrase from a Spanish Christian song. It said, “it’s beautiful to be asleep with the heart awake.”… The one organ of our body that never ceases to work.  24 hrs a day 365 days times what ever time the Lord gives you, your heart never stops.  The Lord speaks to our hearts, gives us counsel even when we sleep.  In proverbs it tells us to keep our heart with all diligence for out of it are the issues of life.  The Lord talks directly to our hearts, our heart is what He asks for.  762 times the word “heart” is mentioned in the KJV bible. It is an important issue to our Lord.  He commands us to love Him with all our heart, the one organ that never stops.  To love continually and listen to His words all the time.  Our hearts is the core the center of our being.  He longs to speak to your heart, if you would just listen…

  17. 8 I have set the Lord always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

God should always be before us, no matter where we go. He will help us to plant our feet on solid ground. Whatever tries to displace us will not prevail.

  18. 10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

David knew that a Redeemer was coming to save the world from their sin, and leave those who follow Him with a gift of His Holy Spirit. God/Holy Spirit/Jesus are One, and has given us “His children” the gift of salvation and everlasting life with Him in His kingdom of heaven. Thank you Jesus, for giving us early revelations and understanding.

  19. There is great beauty and joy in the metaphors used here for God’s abundant and reliable provision. The word “portion” mentioned here in vs5 draws the image of inheritance in the promised land, is one’s lot in life; a “cup” is one’s destiny. They are “assigned” by the Lord and are secure -they cannot be changed- because God is the one who is in complete control of both. Knowing this can help us stand up confidently when our”portion” doesn’t match our expectations as well as rejoice in grattitude when our “cup” overflows…”You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows” (Ps 23:5). God ordained “boundary lines” determine our stake in a fertile heritage in God’s favor. The Great Provider insureds our inheritance of eternal life, bringing joy and rest to our souls. No matter what our earthly life presents us with, our ultimate and eternal “portion”just like for the Levites, is God Himself!!

  20. Verses 5-6 MSG read “My choice is you, God, first and only. And now I find I’m your choice! You set me up with a house and yard. And then you made me your heir!”

Verses 9-11 MSG “I’m happy from the inside out, and from the outside in, I’m firmly formed. You canceled my ticket to hell—that’s not my destination! Now you’ve got my feet on the life path, all radiant from the shining of your face. Ever since you took my hand, I’m on the right way.” Hold onto Jesus.

  21. 7 I will bless the Lord, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons.

How often do we thank God for the guidelines that He has laid out before us in His word? These guide lines are to keep us in good times, and to save us much heart ache in bad times as well….
