Exodus 20

1 And God spake all these words, saying,

2 I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

7 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:

10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:

11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

13 Thou shalt not kill.

14 Thou shalt not commit adultery.

15 Thou shalt not steal.

16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.

18 And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off.

19 And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die.

20 And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.

21 And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.

22 And the Lord said unto Moses, Thus thou shalt say unto the children of Israel, Ye have seen that I have talked with you from heaven.

23 Ye shall not make with me gods of silver, neither shall ye make unto you gods of gold.

24 An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee.

25 And if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone: for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it.

26 Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that thy nakedness be not discovered thereon.

  1. Verse 3 MSG “No other gods, only me.” Same verse AMP “You shall have no other gods before Me.” Same verse CEV ” Do not worship any god except me.” Once again, specifications and very clear instructions in this chapter. No other name……only Jesus, Jesus, Jesus. The awe of the presence of God….Wow….verse 20 MSG says “Moses spoke to the people: “Don’t be afraid. God has come to test you and instill a deep and reverent awe within you so that you won’t sin.”

  2. You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me. But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey my commands.
    Exodus 20:5-6 NLT

The way we choose to love and obey the Lord can have an affect not only on our present life, but on our future and our families future. Our actions have consequences for generations. We must love Him with all our heart, mind, and spirit.

  3. There is only one God and Jesus is his name. We are not to worship anything else we turn into a God. Our focus should be turned to the only true God and follow the plan he has for us. God’s design is better than any man can come up with. When we follow what God has put into place, we will always come out victorious.

  4. 23 Ye shall not make with me gods of silver, neither shall ye make unto you gods of gold.

    Jesus, I pray for revelation.

20“Don’t be afraid,” Moses answered them, “for God has come in this way to test you, and so that your fear of him will keep you from sinning!”

If we find ourselves struggling with sin and playing games with it, then we have failed the test sent from God and we prove that we do not fear the Lord.

  6. UNHOLY EXPOSURE

Humility is the believers most valued asset. Every sin originates from the throne of pride. The shares a principal here with his people. BUILD an ALTAR. A place of sacrifice. But don’t build it up high so that others may see how big or tall it is. A TRUE ALTAR is not to impress people but GOD.

Verse 26 describes the view people will have of an elevated altar. The LORD affirmed that HE would not be in there to cover nakedness of sin and flesh. The exposure leaves people vulnerable to those around them. Also if you stand above people, we best ensure that we are covered with clothes.

GOD is not interested in decorated ALTARS, elevated ALTARS or shared ALTARS.

Build an ALTAR today unto the LORD and prepare a PLACE for GOD to COVER you with HIS SPIRIT.

  7. NO IDOLS

3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

    5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

I still remember the day I showed this verse to my mother. You see I grew up Catholic and as a young lady I wanted more from God so I started seeking in the word and noticed somethings did not add up. I still remember my punishment for denouncing the statutes of saints and virgins. I did not stop seeking and my God show me His True Way. I am thankful for His Gospel, for He mad sure He had someone in my path that told me that if I had questions to search the bibl for myself, I am thankful for a devoted Pentecostal Aunt that never gave up praying, and for a blessing of a Mother in love that after I fell becaus of my son’s death she never gave up on me. Mothers keep praying, keep loving, and God will give you the desires of your heart. In Jesus Name Amen!!

  8. God is the reason we have all things so if we put the things he gave us priority over him this is like saying okay I got what I want now I dont need you. And who wants to stand in judgement for that? After all we dont bite the hand that feeds us. God is not a God of convenience.

  9. Exodus 20:5 (KJV Strong’s)

    5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

The words bow and serve popped out when I read this along with this thought: bowing and serving are two different actions.

The Lord commands that we should not bow to false gods and that we should not serve them.

The word bow means to worship, honor, and show reverence. These are those who openly live for their god.

The word serve means to obey, do acts of service, and carry out the wishes of. These are those who may not literally worship their false god but they do do their bidding.

Jesus told the Pharisees that they were not Abraham’s children but the devil’s because they did the works of the devil.

Idolatry is much deeper that lying prostate on the floor in front of a statue. By doing what the adversary says we make him our god. This is why we must be very careful and guard ourselves from the dangers of idolatry.

  10. Exodus 20:22 Then the Lord said to Moses,Tell the Israelites this, You have seen for yourselves that I have spoken to you from heaven. Do not make any God’s to be alongside me, do not make for yourselves gods of sliver or gods of gold.

  11. 3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

There is only one true God and his name is Jesus of Nazareth! His name and his name alone is worthy of praise.

  12. Exodus 20:2-3
    2) I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
    3) Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

Hosea 13:4 says, “Yet I am the LORD thy God from the land of Egypt, and thou shalt know no other god but me: for there is no saviour beside me.”
Isaiah 43:11 says, “I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour.”

It is the LORD that has delivered and saved us out of the world and bondage of sin.
The LORD, he is God, he is our Saviour, and his name is JESUS!

  13. “Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:”
    ‭‭Exodus‬ ‭20:3-4‬ ‭KJV

This is why it is necessary for us to be careful when we have little figurines. Thinks such as Angels and crosses are easy for people to find, but sometimes people get heir comfort from the angel figure or their Jesus cross. While these things might hold value, they are not to be worshiped. They should not take the place of our relationship with God. We have to be careful not to value other things more than God.

  14. 5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

This scripture proposed my first question about the trinity. When I was in 4th grade at the baptist school this scripture came up during chapel class. When we read this scripture I raised my hand and asked the question: if God is a jealous God, when I get to heaven a worship God the Father will Jesus and the Holy Ghost be jealous? They didn’t answer me. I’m glad I’m in the truth and my kids have that answer today !

  15. 17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbors.
Covetousness Is a sin, be thankful for what God gives you. Be happy for those who get blessed, don’t envy them, rejoice with them, your blessing is coming!!!

  16. 17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.
Covetousness Is a sin. Be happy with what God gave you. Don’t envy those that get blessed, but rather rejoice with them. Your blessing is on its way.

  17. 17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.
Covetousness is a sin. Be thankful for what God have gave you. Do not envy others but rather rejoice with them. It doesn’t matter what they have that you don’t have. God knows what we need. Keep the sprit and God will b less you!

  18. “And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die.” The chosen people of God (Jesus) were deathly afraid. Reading and actually being there as one knows is different, which is all the more why one would be wise to heed. Dear God, help us (me) to comprehend and too hear your messenger; Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done”. “In God we trust”. “One Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all”. What a mighty God we serve! Thank God for his word. God bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  19. 20 And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.

Having a godly fear causes us to walk right, do right and be right so that sin does not enter into our lives. When people lose their reference and fear of the Lord, they tend to toss caution to the wind and live however they want and sin enters in.

  20. First commandment forbids the worship of any false god, seen or unseen, is that here forbidden to worship an image of any sort, whether the figure of a false deity. The spiritual acts of worship were symbolized in the furniture and ritual of the tabernacle and the altar, and for this end the forms of living things might be employed.

  21. ““You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth;”(Exodus‬ ‭20:4‬ ‭NKJV‬‬)

  22. 20 And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.

Like the prophet said, God is beinging nack the fear of the Lord to America… There will be signs and wonders.

  23. “Do not bow down to them or worship them. I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God. I punish the children for the sin of their parents. I punish the grandchildren and great-grandchildren of those who hate me. But for all time to come I show love to all those who love me and keep my commandments.”
    ‭‭Exodus‬ ‭20:5-6‬ ‭NIRV‬‬

What a responsibility we have as parents…. Our decisions have a long lasting effects.
