Joshua 10

1 Now it came to pass, when Adonizedec king of Jerusalem had heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to Jericho and her king, so he had done to Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them;

2 That they feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all the men thereof were mighty.

3 Wherefore Adonizedec king of Jerusalem, sent unto Hoham king of Hebron, and unto Piram king of Jarmuth, and unto Japhia king of Lachish, and unto Debir king of Eglon, saying,

4 Come up unto me, and help me, that we may smite Gibeon: for it hath made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel.

5 Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their hosts, and encamped before Gibeon, and made war against it.

6 And the men of Gibeon sent unto Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying, Slack not thy hand from thy servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the mountains are gathered together against us.

7 So Joshua ascended from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour.

8 And the Lord said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand; there shall not a man of them stand before thee.

9 Joshua therefore came unto them suddenly, and went up from Gilgal all night.

10 And the Lord discomfited them before Israel, and slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them along the way that goeth up to Bethhoron, and smote them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah.

11 And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going down to Bethhoron, that the Lord cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword.

12 Then spake Joshua to the Lord in the day when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon.

13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.

14 And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the Lord hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the Lord fought for Israel.

15 And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.

16 But these five kings fled, and hid themselves in a cave at Makkedah.

17 And it was told Joshua, saying, The five kings are found hid in a cave at Makkedah.

18 And Joshua said, Roll great stones upon the mouth of the cave, and set men by it for to keep them:

19 And stay ye not, but pursue after your enemies, and smite the hindmost of them; suffer them not to enter into their cities: for the Lord your God hath delivered them into your hand.

20 And it came to pass, when Joshua and the children of Israel had made an end of slaying them with a very great slaughter, till they were consumed, that the rest which remained of them entered into fenced cities.

21 And all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: none moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.

22 Then said Joshua, Open the mouth of the cave, and bring out those five kings unto me out of the cave.

23 And they did so, and brought forth those five kings unto him out of the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.

24 And it came to pass, when they brought out those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.

25 And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage: for thus shall the Lord do to all your enemies against whom ye fight.

26 And afterward Joshua smote them, and slew them, and hanged them on five trees: and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening.

27 And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave wherein they had been hid, and laid great stones in the cave’s mouth, which remain until this very day.

28 And that day Joshua took Makkedah, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof he utterly destroyed, them, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain: and he did to the king of Makkedah as he did unto the king of Jericho.

29 Then Joshua passed from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, unto Libnah, and fought against Libnah:

30 And the Lord delivered it also, and the king thereof, into the hand of Israel; and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain in it; but did unto the king thereof as he did unto the king of Jericho.

31 And Joshua passed from Libnah, and all Israel with him, unto Lachish, and encamped against it, and fought against it:

32 And the Lord delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel, which took it on the second day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein, according to all that he had done to Libnah.

33 Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua smote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining.

34 And from Lachish Joshua passed unto Eglon, and all Israel with him; and they encamped against it, and fought against it:

35 And they took it on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein he utterly destroyed that day, according to all that he had done to Lachish.

36 And Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Israel with him, unto Hebron; and they fought against it:

37 And they took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining, according to all that he had done to Eglon; but destroyed it utterly, and all the souls that were therein.

38 And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir; and fought against it:

39 And he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof; and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining: as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to the king thereof; as he had done also to Libnah, and to her king.

40 So Joshua smote all the country of the hills, and of the south, and of the vale, and of the springs, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the Lord God of Israel commanded.

41 And Joshua smote them from Kadeshbarnea even unto Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, even unto Gibeon.

42 And all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time, because the Lord God of Israel fought for Israel.

43 And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.

Wow!! Faith spoken into action!!! GOD will always give you the victory over the enemy! My part is to truly trust In His word, when GOD says He will give you power over the enemy, HE WILL!

‘GOD IS AWESOME’ He can move mountains. He’s my protector. He can hide me from the rain.

  2. 12 Then spake Joshua to the Lord in the day when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon.

13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.

  3. Talk about God is fighting for us! Victory after victory after victory. If we (POFW) will obey, we (POFW) too will be blessed with many, many victories in Jesus name as verse 14 AMP says “There has not been a day like that before it or after it, when the Lord listened to (heeded) the voice of a man; for the Lord was fighting for Israel.”

  4. 11. And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going down to Beth-horon, that the Lord cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword.

For the Lord fought for Israel…

God can do mighty things! When He fights for us, He will do whatever it takes to win the battle for us, even if it means raining down stones or pausing the sun and moon.

    God is fighting for us
    God is on our side
    He has overcome
    Yes, He has overcome
    We will not be shaken
    We will not be moved
    Jesus You are here

6The men of Gibeon quickly sent messengers to Joshua at his camp in Gilgal. “Don’t abandon your servants now!” they pleaded. “Come at once! Save us! Help us! For all the Amorite kings who live in the hill country have joined forces to attack us.”

Oh wow, you have to give it to the people of Gibeon…They are the ones who deceived Joshua into signing a covenant with him and now here they are asking for help. These people were committed to doing whatever it took to stay alive and to their credit they picked the side of the Lord and God protects them. 🙂

Luke 16:8 NLT “The rich man had to admire the dishonest rascal for being so shrewd. And it is true that the children of this world are more shrewd in dealing with the world around them than are the children of the light.

  6. 24 And it came to pass, when they brought out those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.

25 And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage: for thus shall the Lord do to all your enemies against whom ye fight.

Luke 10:19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

As Joshua gave authority to his captains to put their feet on the necks of the conquered kings, Jesus has given us authority to put Satan under our feet.

  7. 42 Joshua conquered all these kings and their land in a single campaign, for the Lord, the God of Israel, was fighting for his people. (NLT)

The Lord, the God of Isreal, is fighting for us!

God is fighting for us, pushing back the darkness, lighting up the kingdom that cannot be shaken. In the Name of Jesus, the enemy’s defeated! And we will shout it out!!!

  8. CONCEAL YOUR ADVERSARIES

GOD positions us for VICTORY. We must be courageous and take advantage of the opportunity. The kings thought they would be able to hide from Joshua. Joshua chose to conceal the kings and isolate them from the battle.

    1. It is dangerous to cowardly hide in the time of battle.
    2. Be sensitive and creative when you have the advantage.

Be on the look out for VICTORY!

  9. THE POWER OF WORDS

GOD was listening for the voice of Joshua, he was waiting to hear what Joshua would speak, what his request would be.

Joshua did not ask the LORD to defeat his enemy for him. Joshua asked for MORE TIME to defeat his enemy. Joshua, a good Leader took advantage of the VICTORY that GOD had granted.

The prayer request of 1 man in 1 situation affected the entire world. Our prayers can affect the world.

  11. Trust in the Lord!!!!

8 And the Lord said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand; there shall not a man of them stand before thee.

10 And the Lord discomfited them before Israel, and slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them along the way that goeth up to Bethhoron, and smote them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah.

God will always fight for us! He gave us the Victory, but WE MUST TRUST, BELIEVE, AND HAVE FAITH THAT HE WILL DO WHAT HE SAID HE WOULD! Have patience for it will be at His perfect timing. We must learn to listen to God, do as He says, and KNOW HE WILL FIGHT FOR US EVEN TO THE POINT OF HOLDNG THE SUN STILL!!!

  12. 8 And the Lord said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand; there shall not a man of them stand before thee.

There is such peace when you have a personal word from the Lord. There still may be a storm or test to go through, but having HIS word to stand on during that time makes all the difference in the world. Reminds me of a song Priscilla McGruder sang:

    Stand On His Word
    1.
I know for sure that life it can let you down
And those voices in your head start to pound
Tho there’s pain and woe about you
    Consider everything you’ve heard
When you’ve done all you can stand on His Word

    Cho
When you’ve done all that you can
    Stand on His Word
When you’ve stood all you can stand
    Do what you’ve learned
Remember all you’ve read is true
God said he’ll always bring you thru
In spite of everything you’ve heard
    Stand on his word

    2.
Like satan came to Job he’s gonna come to you
Accusing God denying faith is true
Yet in life’s darkest trials God understands
Trust in His Holy Word and stand on His Word

  13. 41 And Joshua smote them from Kadeshbarnea even unto Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, even unto Gibeon.

42 And all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time, because the Lord God of Israel fought for Israel.

we continue to see a theme with Joshua that he seeks God for counsel comma then he obeys God goes to war and God gives him the victory. the key to Joshua success was obedience to God and the fact that Joshua did not have to really fight the battle but that God fought for his people. if we as his people learn to pray seek his counsel and believe in him and listen to his voice he will fight our our battles and give us the victory!

  14. 24 And it came to pass, when they brought out those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.

25 And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage: for thus shall the Lord do to all your enemies against whom ye fight.

God will put the enemy under foot as long as His word is followed. I don’t want to be the one put under foot, but there have been times that I felt that way. Now is the time to put the enemy under foot as POFW moves forward into uncharted territory.

Psa 110:1 A Psalm of David. The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.

Luk 20:43 Till I make thine enemies thy footstool.

Rom 16:20 And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.

1Co 15:25 For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.

How much more does there need to be. I need to keep the enemy right there. He has no place in my life anymore………Thank you Jesus…….Amen!!!!!

  15. 4 Come up unto me, and help me, that we may smite Gibeon: for it hath made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel.

Why is the drive to completely and quickly divide the world into “us” and “them” so powerful? Is it protection of numbers or fear of the unknown? Given even the slimmest of criteria, we tend to split people into two groups—an “in-group” and an “out-group.” The categories we create can be associated with nationality, religion, race, language—or they can be as seemingly inconsequential as hair color, weight or even height.

Once we make this division, prejudices can begin to occur. For one, we tend to think more highly of people in the in-group than those in the out-group. Also, we tend to feel that others in the in-group are similar to ourselves. Someone with glasses may believe that other people who wear glasses are intelligent.

Let’s be careful not to compartmentalize and/or judge people without getting to know them first.

  16. 12 Then spake Joshua to the Lord in the day when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon.

There is power when we’re obedient, I remember Pastor praying and us praying and believing that the Sun stay still for Western day! ( I believe it was western day ) God is a great and Mighty God and he will cause the sun to stand still by the command of his servant! That’s how awesome he is!

  17. It’s so amazing when God fights our battles.

11 And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going down to Bethhoron, that the Lord cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword.

  18. 7So Joshua ascended from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour.
8 And the Lord said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand; there shall not a man of them stand before thee.

We are made to overcome and be conquerors for our Lord. He is great and greatly to be praised.

  19. “On the day the LORD gave the Israelites victory over the Amorites, Joshua prayed to the LORD in front of all the people of Israel. He said, “Let the sun stand still over Gibeon, and the moon over the valley of Aijalon.” So the sun stood still and the moon stayed in place until the nation of Israel had defeated its enemies. Is this event not recorded in The Book of Jashar? The sun stayed in the middle of the sky, and it did not set as on a normal day. There has never been a day like this one before or since, when the LORD answered such a prayer. Surely the LORD fought for Israel that day!”
    ‭‭Joshua‬ ‭10:12-14‬ ‭NLT‬‬

If the prayers of one man can save a whole nation, imagine what would happen to the city of Fort Worth if we all committed to lifting up prayers for this city daily!!

  20. Joshua 10:22-25 (NLT)
    22) Then Joshua said, “Remove the rocks covering the opening of the cave, and bring the five kings to me.”
    23) So they brought the five kings out of the cave – the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Eglon.
    24) When they brought them out, Joshua told the commanders of his army, “Come and put your feet on the kings’ necks.” And they did as they were told.
    25) “Don’t ever be afraid or discouraged,” Joshua told his men. “Be strong and courageous, for the LORD is going to do this to all of your enemies.”

What an Encouraging Word from their Leader.
Thank You Pastor for all the Encouraging Words you speak to us at POFW!

And the lord said unto Joshua fear them not: for I delivered them into thine han tgere shalt not a man of them stand before thee.
If Gods before thee who can be against thee! Thank you Jesus..

  24. 16 During the battle the five kings escaped and hid in a cave at Makkedah.

The kings feared Joshua and his army. If they only feared God in the same manner they wouldn’t have to go into hiding. With God, we are in the open, free to praise and worship him!

  25. Joshua 10:40 (NLT)
40 So Joshua conquered the whole region—the kings and people of the hill country, the Negev, the western foothills, and the mountain slopes. He completely destroyed everyone in the land, leaving no survivors, just as the Lord, the God of Israel, had commanded.

Hail stones fell, and the sun stopped so that the wicked armies would be destroys. God wanted them exterminated as the word destroyed implies. He wanted them freed from all worldly influence, demonic worshippers, and idolatry. God cared so much about their future he fought the battle for them.

  26. 25 And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage: for thus shall the Lord do to all your enemies against whom ye fight.

1 John 4:18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casteth out fear, because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made in perfect love.

  27. 4 Come up unto me, and help me, that we may smite Gibeon: for it hath made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel.

    How wicked could they be…

  28. 19 And stay ye not, but pursue after your enemies, and smite the hindmost of them; suffer them not to enter into their cities: for the Lord your God hath delivered them into your hand.

  29. 24 And it came to pass, when they brought out those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them

Luke 10:19 Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you.

What a powerful demonstration of God’s authority over the princes and powers of the world.

  30. 11 And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going down to Bethhoron, that the Lord cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword.

You can never out due God.

Up to this point the people of Israel had slayed a great number of people. All five Kings were together with there armies, when Joshua and the army of God showed up.

It might seem like your doing all the fighting in your daily battles, BUT God is at work slaying the enemy ahead of you. Don’t give up, God is still at work in your life.

  31. Joshua Commands the Sun to Stand Still
Joshua 10:12-15 Clearly Israel’s ” long day,” by which Joshua’s forces were able to defeat the enemy fully, was something miraculous and an answer to prayer.

Hab.3:11 the sun and moon stood still in their habitation: at the light of thine arrows they went, and at the shining of thy glittering spear.

  32. 12. Then spake Josh’-ua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Am’-o-rites before the children of Am’-o-rites before the children of Is’-ra-el, and he said in the sight of Is’-ra-el, Sun, stand thou still upon Gib’-e-on; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Aj’-a-lon. 13.And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Ja’-sher ? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day. 14. And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Is’-ra-el. KJV HALLELUJAH !!!!

  33. 12 Then spake Joshua to the Lord in the day when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon.

I just couldn’t help but think on the words of pastor from this past sunday. “Behold your God!?” we should not be dubtful of what God can do and what He can do in one day! How big is your God? Depends on how much faith you have. Its time to grow in faith and allow God to be God and amaze our limited human comprehension with His awesome wonders.

  34. 16 But these five kings fled, and hid themselves in a cave at Makkedah.17 And it was told Joshua, saying, The five kings are found hid in a cave at Makkedah.

Don’t hide from the battle. Jesus is in front of us!!! We were meant for this and Jesus has prepared us. We are filled with HOLY GHOST same power that rose Jesus from the grave. We have him inside of us so don’t fear just GO. Obey God’s COMMANDS and He will do the rest.

  35. 8And the Lord said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand; there shall not a man of them stand before thee.

The enemy used fear to crippled lives leaving them unable to complete their mission. Yet God is giving us hope that He is fighting for us.

  36. 5 Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their hosts, and encamped before Gibeon, and made war against it.

5 Kings. Goliath had four brothers. David gathered 5 smooth stones. I think I need to do some research on the number 5…

  37. “And all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time, because the Lord God of Israel fought for Israel.” The word of God (Jesus) identified “because the Lord God”. They were able to do “because the Lord God”. Albeit they would have never been able to do it by their own might. Dear God, let us never become so full of self that we unwisely forget “because the Lord God”. God Bless America, Israel, Jerusalem, and you all in Jesus name, Amen!

  38. “And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the Lord hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the Lord fought for Israel.” Joshua was concerned with doing only, what pleased the Lord. We should also pray and ask the Lord if our actions please him, or if our actions please self. A good measure is how did the Lord act and what did the Lord do. God help us so that our actions may be pleasing too you, in Jesus name.

  39. Joshua 10:12 On the day the lord gave the Amorires over to Israel Joshua said to the Lord in the presence of Israel. Sun stand still over Gibeon and you moon Over the Valley of Aijalon. So the sun Stood Still and the moon stopped til the nation avenged itself on its enemies as it is written in the book of Jashar. The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day. There has never been a day like it before or since a day when the Lord listened to a human being. Surely thr the Lord was fighting for Israel.

  40. “25 And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage: for thus shall the Lord do to all your enemies against whom ye fight.”

If Jesus is with us, who can be against us?

  41. 12 Then spake Joshua to the Lord in the day when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon.

Moses was supposed to speak to the Rock and water flow out. Jesus spoke to the storm and rebuked it and it calmed down in Mark4:39. God has given men the ability to be used to execute the miraculous. Joshua spoke to the Lord that the sun stand still and the moon hold off. Sometimes God needs to step in so that somethings can stand and others prevail like in battle here.

  42. “And the Lord said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand; there shall not a man of them stand before thee.”
    ‭‭Joshua‬ ‭10:8‬ ‭KJV‬‬

When the Lord says that you have victory go take it. We can take this city in Jesus name.
