Acts 13

Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.

As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.

And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.

So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed unto Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus.

And when they were at Salamis, they preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews: and they had also John to their minister.

And when they had gone through the isle unto Paphos, they found a certain sorcerer, a false prophet, a Jew, whose name was Barjesus:

Which was with the deputy of the country, Sergius Paulus, a prudent man; who called for Barnabas and Saul, and desired to hear the word of God.

But Elymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turn away the deputy from the faith.

Then Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him.

10 And said, O full of all subtilty and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?

11 And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness; and he went about seeking some to lead him by the hand.

12 Then the deputy, when he saw what was done, believed, being astonished at the doctrine of the Lord.

13 Now when Paul and his company loosed from Paphos, they came to Perga in Pamphylia: and John departing from them returned to Jerusalem.

14 But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and sat down.

15 And after the reading of the law and the prophets the rulers of the synagogue sent unto them, saying, Ye men and brethren, if ye have any word of exhortation for the people, say on.

16 Then Paul stood up, and beckoning with his hand said, Men of Israel, and ye that fear God, give audience.

17 The God of this people of Israel chose our fathers, and exalted the people when they dwelt as strangers in the land of Egypt, and with an high arm brought he them out of it.

18 And about the time of forty years suffered he their manners in the wilderness.

19 And when he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Chanaan, he divided their land to them by lot.

20 And after that he gave unto them judges about the space of four hundred and fifty years, until Samuel the prophet.

21 And afterward they desired a king: and God gave unto them Saul the son of Cis, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, by the space of forty years.

22 And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave their testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will.

23 Of this man’s seed hath God according to his promise raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus:

24 When John had first preached before his coming the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.

25 And as John fulfilled his course, he said, Whom think ye that I am? I am not he. But, behold, there cometh one after me, whose shoes of his feet I am not worthy to loose.

26 Men and brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, and whosoever among you feareth God, to you is the word of this salvation sent.

27 For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him.

28 And though they found no cause of death in him, yet desired they Pilate that he should be slain.

29 And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a sepulchre.

30 But God raised him from the dead:

31 And he was seen many days of them which came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are his witnesses unto the people.

32 And we declare unto you glad tidings, how that the promise which was made unto the fathers,

33 God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.

34 And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he said on this wise, I will give you the sure mercies of David.

35 Wherefore he saith also in another psalm, Thou shalt not suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

36 For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption:

37 But he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption.

38 Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins:

39 And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.

40 Beware therefore, lest that come upon you, which is spoken of in the prophets;

41 Behold, ye despisers, and wonder, and perish: for I work a work in your days, a work which ye shall in no wise believe, though a man declare it unto you.

42 And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath.

43 Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.

44 And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God.

45 But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming.

46 Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles.

47 For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth.

48 And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed.

49 And the word of the Lord was published throughout all the region.

50 But the Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts.

51 But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Iconium.

52 And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost.

  1. 50 But the Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts.
51 But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Iconium.
52 And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost.

Too many times we count the results as apart of our victory as well we should, but in walking with Christ it is essential that we seek to be obedient, and let God bring the results. The deciples counted it a joy in the Holy Ghost even after persecution was raised against Paul and Barnabas. James tells us in first chapter to count it all Joy in trials and temptations..it’s not about what we are doing it’s just about being obedient to the faith God calls us too

  2. Acts 13:51,52 But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Iconium. And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost.

Matthew 10:14 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hearing your words, when you depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.
Shake off the dust your feet is a symbolic act of rejection and condemnation the idea being that not even the dust of a wicked city was worthy of them.

Mark 6:11 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when you depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say in to you, it shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment, than for that city.

Keep witnessing/preaching in all the City!

And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost.

Matthew 5:12 Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

  3. Verses 48-49 MSG “When the non-Jewish outsiders heard this, they could hardly believe their good fortune. All who were marked out for real life put their trust in God—they honored God’s Word by receiving that life. And this Message of salvation spread like wildfire all through the region.” Just as Paul/Barnabas didn’t back down, followed orders, and did what God commanded them to you; we too, must push to share this Message of salvation to reach this region.

  4. Acts 13
    Message
6-7 They traveled the length of the island, and at Paphos came upon a Jewish wizard who had worked himself into the confidence of the governor, Sergius Paulus, an intelligent man not easily taken in by charlatans. The wizard’s name was Bar-Jesus. He was as crooked as a corkscrew.

7-11 The governor invited Barnabas and Saul in, wanting to hear God’s Word firsthand from them. But Dr. Know-It-All (that’s the wizard’s name in plain English) stirred up a ruckus, trying to divert the governor from becoming a believer. But Saul (or Paul), full of the Holy Spirit and looking him straight in the eye, said, “You bag of wind, you parody of a devil—why, you stay up nights inventing schemes to cheat people out of God. But now you’ve come up against God himself, and your game is up. You’re about to go blind—no sunlight for you for a good long stretch.” He was plunged immediately into a shadowy mist and stumbled around, begging people to take his hand and show him the way.

12 When the governor saw what happened, he became a believer, full of enthusiasm over what they were saying about the Master.

    God is in Control…………….
    Isaiah 41:10
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

MATTHEW 28:18-20 (KJV and NRSV) And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you.

Even in the midst of adversity we must remember all power was given to Jesus Christ. He then commissioned us to go and do the same.
Obstacles will arise, people will scheme against the work of God but God has given us authority.

    Luke 10:19

Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

Acts 14:3 – Long time therefore abode they speaking boldly in the Lord, which gave testimony unto the word of his grace, and granted signs and wonders to be done by their hands.

    In Jesus name!

  5. 50. But the Jewish leaders united the aristocratic religious women and the city’s leading men in opposition to Paul and Barnabas, and soon they were persecuted and driven out of the region.

    51. They simply shook the dust off their feet in protest and moved on to Iconium.

    52. The disciples weren’t intimidated at all; rather, they were full of joy and the Holy Spirit. Voice

Many of today’s social and political “leaders” try to drive out those that oppose them and stand for what is right. We can’t allow ourselves to be intimidated by them; rather, we must stay full of the Holy Ghost and joy, praying for our leaders, that God’s will be done.

  6. THY KINGDOM COME
    KINGDOM RESPONSE TO REJECTION

49 And the word of the Lord was published throughout all the region.
50 But the Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts.
51 But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Iconium.
52 And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost.

Paul and Barnabas give us great insight in how to respond when The GOSPEL of JESUS is rejected.

    1. Do not consider it a personal attack
    2. Do not react to the persecution
    3. Shake it OFF
    4. Let it GO
    5. Be FILLED with The HOLY GHOST
    6. Be FILLED with JOY
    7. GO to someone else to share The GOSPEL

The Holy Ghost and JOY often accompany one another. JOY is a Fruit of The SPIRIT. When we are filled with The HOLY GHOST, the power of GOD manifests The Kingdom of GOD which generates the JOY of the LORD in our lives.

HIS JOY is not reliant on circumstance or condition for production, but as we see here. HIS JOY is available even in times of persecution and rejection.

Be FILLED with The HOLY GHOST today!

  7. Another psalm explains it more fully: ‘You will not allow your Holy One to rot in the grave.’ This is not a reference to David, for after David had done the will of God in his own generation, he died and was buried with his ancestors, and his body decayed. No, it was a reference to someone else—someone whom God raised and whose body did not decay.
Acts of the Apostles 13:35‭-‬37 NLT

Bible study! As Pastor says”where’s that in the Bible?” Anything someone tells you weigh it against the Word of God. Is it in the Bible? Does it translate out to what their meaning? Have you fasted and prayed over it if you need guidance. God confirms everything with His Word.

  8. 46 Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles.

  9. Acts 13:38-39 (the voice)
    38) So you must realize, my brothers, that through this resurrected man forgiveness of sins is assured to you.
    39) Through Jesus, everyone who believes is set free from all sins – sins which the law of Moses could not release you from.

“Through JESUS, everyone who believes is set free from all sins”
Eph. 1:7, “In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace.”
Col. 1:14, “In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins.”

  10. Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles.
    Acts 13:46 KJV

As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction. Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness. But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.
    2 Peter 3:16‭-‬18 KJV

How we receive the Word of God determines whether we are worthy of eternal life or destined for destruction. We must gladly receive the word of God, wholeheartedly obey it, and then steadfastly hold to it, lest we fall. To do this, we must have a lifelong relationship with the Word of God so that we can grow in grace and increase in the knowledge of our Lord. We will never outgrow our need to read, study, and obey the His Word..

  11. 47 For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth.

The word of God stated it clearly that he has set thee to be a light of the gentiles that we should be for salvation unto the ends of the earth.
All to often I realize that many that I come into contact with really place value on the temporal things of the world and none of those things have any eternal rewards attached to them. We have to become old to be the light to a dying world engrossed by sin and temptations. We must continue steadfast as long as we believe in the things eternal.

The mind frame is simple: The world didn’t give it and they can’t take it away! Hold fast to your faith that our God will soon break the eastern sky and call a church spotless righteous church unto himself.

    Come Lord Jesus please come!

  12. Acts 13: 25-26 [Amp] And as John was ending his course, he asked, What or who do you secretly think that I am ? I am not He [ the Christ. No], but note that after me One is coming, the sandals of Whose feet I am not worthy to untie! John was already preaching baptism of repentance to all the people. [26] Brethren, sons of the family of Abraham, and all those others among you who reverence and fear God, to us has been sent the message of this salvation [ the salvation obtained through Jesus Christ]. [ Ps.107: 20] He sends fourth His word and heals them and rescues them from the pit and destruction. For my God will satisfies the longing soul and fills the hungry soul with good. For we would praise and confess to the Lord for his goodness and loving- kindness and his wonderful works. I bless you in the name of the Jesus.

  13. ..and they mi is tweed to they Lord fasted and pray, and the Holy Ghost said:….
13:3 And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid hands
On them, they sent them away.

A true church, being govern by Holy God, is a church that whose lifestyle is praying and fasting.
    Hallelujah 🙌🙌🙏🙏

  14. Acts 13
    40 Beware therefore, lest that come upon you, which is spoken of in the prophets;
41 Behold, ye despisers, and wonder, and perish: for I work a work in your days, a work which ye shall in no wise believe, though a man declare it unto you.
42 And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them
43 Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.

  15. 2 As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.

3 And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.

Being sent out to minister is not something that we should take lightly. It brings responsibility to the individual to balance ministry and submission. Submission to the Ministry that sent them out and responsibility to lead with the training received. We have witnessed too many times people leaving on their own accord and not having the covering of the Ministry that is over them. Men who operate outside of their covering will not be successful. Even as a 16 year old church, we are still under pastoral covering so that we don’t become deceived and go off on a tangent and be lost.

  16. He had attached himself to the governor, Sergius Paulus, who was an intelligent man. The governor invited Barnabas and Saul to visit him, for he wanted to hear the word of God. But Elymas, the sorcerer (as his name means in Greek), interfered and urged the governor to pay no attention to what Barnabas and Saul said. He was trying to keep the governor from believing. When the governor saw what had happened, he became a believer, for he was astonished at the teaching about the Lord.
Acts of the Apostles 13:7‭-‬8‭, ‬12 NLT
How sad it’s that people try to block and stop us from preach the gospel I remember when I was in high school teaching the word of God . During this incident I was praying and someone came up to me and noticed that I was Pentecostal so the came to me and asked are you Pentecostal I respond back yes the answer me back saying your that religion that speaks devil I respond back to her no I am that religion that believe in the Bible. People are going to try to stop us for preach the gospel that’s just how this world is . But we have to tell ourselves it not my will but it’s God will . You may ask what do you mean by that lets his kingdom come his will be done . I’VE have learned my 9 years of being a Christian you cannot help everyone but you can help those who want to be help

  17. iLove the Kingdom
50 But the Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts.

Those who hate are going to always try their best to cause division and strife. These people have no conscience and normally do not care who they hurt in the process. The spirit behind this of course is the antichrist spirit. He will continue until the day he is thrown into the pit.

  18. 8 But Elymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turn away the deputy from the faith.
9 Then Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him.

How much fight is in you?

How far do you go to reach a soul? Do you fight even when opposition gets heavy? Is it only until, you are able to speak you mind ?

When we reach for a soul, we cannot be intimidated by the enemy and his possible entourage. We must remember that it is about the soul, and where they end up for eternity. We must fight as if our lives are at stake, because more than we realize, they are. The Word tells us that those who know to do good and do it not, to them it is sin… well guess what, we know. Let’s fight for this region, and see His Kingdom in revival.

  19. For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth. And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed. And the word of the Lord was published throughout all the region. But the Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts.

They rejected God’s Word and so God allowed the Gentiles to receive, and they was greatful, God always turns situationsaround for his glory!

  20. “Then Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and declared, “It was necessary that we first preach the word of God to you Jews. But since you have rejected it and judged yourselves unworthy of eternal life, we will offer it to the Gentiles. For the Lord gave us this command when he said, ‘I have made you a light to the Gentiles, to bring salvation to the farthest corners of the earth.’ ” When the Gentiles heard this, they were very glad and thanked the Lord for his message; and all who were chosen for eternal life became believers.”
    ‭‭Acts of the Apostles‬ ‭13:46-48‬ ‭NLT‬‬

What a wonderful gift the Lord has given us. Salvation and eternal life.

  21. Behold, ye despisers, and wonder, and perish: for I work a work in your days, a work which ye shall in no wise believe, though a man declare it unto you. And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath.
    Acts 13:41‭-‬42 KJV
The first verse applies to us because I believe God is working a work among us that some men will not believe. Nevertheless, we believe it, receive it and will work with God to be part of it.
The second verse shows the hunger of the Gentiles to hear the Word of God. No wonder God sent Paul and Barnabas to preach to them.

  22. 2 As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.

3 And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.

    Prayed AND fasted.
It was when they had prayed and fasted that the Holy Ghost spoke to them.
When we add fasting to our prayers we are able to get our flesh out of the way and truly hear where God is leading us.

  23. 42 And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath.
43 Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.
44 And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God.

Those who are hungry will seek the Word; and the Word will be given to those who are hungry, seeking, and open to receive the Word.

  24. Paul and Barnabas answered the call that Pastor Watts preached about tonigh. When the call comes to those who have been with Jesus, there is no question, we are going. The Kingdome is waiting on Labors to fullfil their calling not God to call them. While Pastor preached tonight I rehearsed all the prophesy over my life and thought to myself, the call has been made several times, I just have to answer it. I will GO, here I am!

  25. 47 For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth.

We are called to be laborers, to share his message, to share his truth. We are the Light of the gentiles.
Why worry about what others think, we can only be told no. We must shake the dust off our feet and continue on being filled with joy and the Holy Ghost.

  26. And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness; and he went about seeking some to lead him by the hand.

I have witnessed that because of our stubbornness God has let us go through certain things. Not because he wants to hurt us but because he loves us. He loves us so much he’s willing to let us go through some pain so we can realize who He is, stand on His Word, and help others come to God. You just never know what your trial can do for others.

  27. “Fellow children of Abraham and you God-fearing Gentiles, it is to us that this message of salvation has been sent.
    Acts 13:26 NIV

If we have heard this message it is not by coincidence but it is also a duty for us to spread and share HIS word to someone else. Let continue to share His message to this world.

  28. 48 And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed.

I am glad for the obedience of men unto their calling and mandate of God. What if Paul had not gone to preach to the gentiles? Where would we be today? We ought to think how many people can be affected by our obedience for the Good or the bad?

  29. 9 Then Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him.

God can roadblock the enemy and his works against the church. We can bind the enemy and loose ministering spirits as we labor for the kingdom of God.

  30. I learned that a evil guy wanted to trick a governor to the devils ways but the two disciples were trying to teach him good then one of the disciples looked the evil guy right in the eye and said you son of the devil you are messing with the kingdom of the lord and you will not see for some time instantly darkness went into his eyes

  31. But the people of the town were divided in their opinion about them. Some sided with the Jews, and some with the apostles. Then a mob of Gentiles and Jews, along with their leaders, decided to attack and stone them.
Acts of the Apostles 14:4‭-‬5 NLT

You can’t be on both sides of the fence. You’re either for God or against God.

  32. 4 So Barnabas and Saul were sent out by the Holy Spirit. They went down to the seaport of Seleucia and then sailed for the island of Cyprus.

Once you have the Holy Spirit, you’ll also have a desire to teach the Word. The Holy Spirit will guide you in what to say and teach. You’ll get the desire to serve in ministries, praise and worship God.
