1 Kings 15
1 Now in the eighteenth year of king Jeroboam the son of Nebat reigned Abijam over Judah.
2 Three years reigned he in Jerusalem. and his mother’s name was Maachah, the daughter of Abishalom.
3 And he walked in all the sins of his father, which he had done before him: and his heart was not perfect with the Lord his God, as the heart of David his father.
4 Nevertheless for David’s sake did the Lord his God give him a lamp in Jerusalem, to set up his son after him, and to establish Jerusalem:
5 Because David did that which was right in the eyes of the Lord, and turned not aside from any thing that he commanded him all the days of his life, save only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.
6 And there was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam all the days of his life.
7 Now the rest of the acts of Abijam, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? And there was war between Abijam and Jeroboam.
8 And Abijam slept with his fathers; and they buried him in the city of David: and Asa his son reigned in his stead.
9 And in the twentieth year of Jeroboam king of Israel reigned Asa over Judah.
10 And forty and one years reigned he in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Maachah, the daughter of Abishalom.
11 And Asa did that which was right in the eyes of the Lord, as did David his father.
12 And he took away the sodomites out of the land, and removed all the idols that his fathers had made.
13 And also Maachah his mother, even her he removed from being queen, because she had made an idol in a grove; and Asa destroyed her idol, and burnt it by the brook Kidron.
14 But the high places were not removed: nevertheless Asa’s heart was perfect with the Lord all his days.
15 And he brought in the things which his father had dedicated, and the things which himself had dedicated, into the house of the Lord, silver, and gold, and vessels.
16 And there was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israel all their days.
17 And Baasha king of Israel went up against Judah, and built Ramah, that he might not suffer any to go out or come in to Asa king of Judah.
18 Then Asa took all the silver and the gold that were left in the treasures of the house of the Lord, and the treasures of the king’s house, and delivered them into the hand of his servants: and king Asa sent them to Benhadad, the son of Tabrimon, the son of Hezion, king of Syria, that dwelt at Damascus, saying,
19 There is a league between me and thee, and between my father and thy father: behold, I have sent unto thee a present of silver and gold; come and break thy league with Baasha king of Israel, that he may depart from me.
20 So Benhadad hearkened unto king Asa, and sent the captains of the hosts which he had against the cities of Israel, and smote Ijon, and Dan, and Abelbethmaachah, and all Cinneroth, with all the land of Naphtali.
21 And it came to pass, when Baasha heard thereof, that he left off building of Ramah, and dwelt in Tirzah.
22 Then king Asa made a proclamation throughout all Judah; none was exempted: and they took away the stones of Ramah, and the timber thereof, wherewith Baasha had builded; and king Asa built with them Geba of Benjamin, and Mizpah.
23 The rest of all the acts of Asa, and all his might, and all that he did, and the cities which he built, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? Nevertheless in the time of his old age he was diseased in his feet.
24 And Asa slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David his father: and Jehoshaphat his son reigned in his stead.

As a father you look back looking for the one thing, you could’ve done better. And you realize that you had to do what was right in the eyes of the Lord and turn your life around because he was looking real good, and at the end of your life that’s all that matters.

20 So Benhadad hearkened unto king Asa, and sent the captains of the hosts which he had against the cities of Israel, and smote Ijon, and Dan, and Abelbethmaachah, and all Cinneroth, with all the land of Naphtali.
Brother against brother, just like our Civil war to a certain extend. It didn’t matter for they did not follow the commandments of God but their own selfishness. God kept their kingdom because He made the promise to David to keep His kingdom. Our God ALWAYS KEEPS HIS PROMISES!!! It may take time but He is Never late His timing is perfect. All you have to do is trust Him with all of your heart and mind!
18 Then Asa took all the silver and the gold that were left in the treasures of the house of the Lord, and the treasures of the king’s house, and delivered them into the hand of his servants: and king Asa sent them to Benhadad, the son of Tabrimon, the son of Hezion, king of Syria, that dwelt at Damascus, saying,
19 There is a league between me and thee, and between my father and thy father: behold, I have sent unto thee a present of silver and gold; come and break thy league with Baasha king of Israel, that he may depart from me.
Instead of turning to the Lord for safety when being attacked, Asa turned to man. The Lord God is our refuge. Not man. We can run to Him anytime, anywhere with any problem.
11 And Asa did that which was right in the eyes of the Lord, as did David his father.
12 And he took away the sodomites out of the land, and removed all the idols that his fathers had made.
13 And also Maachah his mother, even her he removed from being queen, because she had made an idol in a grove; and Asa destroyed her idol, and burnt it by the brook Kidron.
14 But the high places were not removed: nevertheless Asa’s heart was perfect with the Lord all his days.
There is always ways to get into the presence of God. You can build an altar or you can build a prayer closet or room, or you simply can fall upon your knees anywhere you need to begin to seek the presence of God. But the one thing you can not do is have any idol or God before the one true God. Asa knew that and he began to remove all the idols that his father had allowed. He also removed his mother from being queen because of her idol. Sometimes you just need an old fashion sweep clean the things of your house especially if you are trying to seek the mercy and grace of Jesus. You can not have any other gods before him. Now we see people put other things that they push before they push Jesus. It is about giving 100% to Jesus Christ. We must eat, sleep, and breath Jesus and the word. This is the only way we are going to make our eternal home in glory. We can not allow distractions of this world to occupy our mind. It’s time to be bold and take a stand for Jesus Christ even if we are the only one standing.
Live Jesus to give Jesus!
Honor your father and your mother. The actions of David’s last request maybe wasn’t seen right in the eyes of Solomon. But Solomon respected David’s request. Loving those that loved his father. And getting rid of and serving justice where justice needed to be served.
““Be kind to the sons of Barzillai of Gilead. Make them permanent guests at your table, for they took care of me when I fled from your brother Absalom.”

Our fathers in the Gospel have led the way and set examples of how we can and should live – but we still have to make the choice to either follow in their footsteps or walk in the ways of the world.
I’m reminded of the old song:

I tried these worldly pleasures
And they failed
When you see the gates of Heaven
And you hear the Master say
Me or the world my child
Which one did you take?
King after king took over the throne; but, none ruled like David with an exemplary life before God, not going off on his own in willful defiance of God’s clear directions. Asa tried reviving the ways of his ancestor David; but, he never fully got rid of all of the sin and willful defiance. We can’t say we love and serve God yet keep that little innocent secret sin that we just can’t let go of. The story/uneasiness continues with wars between them as a result of what was still kept around during Asa’s rule. Joshua 24:14 says “So now: Fear God. Worship him in total commitment. Get rid of the gods your ancestors worshiped on the far side of The River (the Euphrates) and in Egypt. You, worship God.”
We can also see the result of David living an exemplary life before God, brought many mercies to his future generations. The life that we live before God can do the same……we can either be a blessing or a curse for generations to come. Psalm 22:30 NLT says “Our children will also serve him. Future generations will hear about the wonders of the Lord.” Psalm 78:6 NLT “so the next generation might know them—even the children not yet born—and they in turn will teach their own children.” Psalm 102:18 NLT “Let this be recorded for future generations, so that a people not yet born will praise the Lord.” Let us LIVE-GIVE JESUS²!

LEAVING A LEGACY
4 Nevertheless for David’s sake did the Lord his God give him a lamp in Jerusalem, to set up his son after him, and to establish Jerusalem:
5 Because David did that which was right in the eyes of the Lord, and turned not aside from any thing that he commanded him all the days of his life, save only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.
JESUS is eternal and therefore knows all things of all times. While a generation may pass and their history with them, we know that with GOD history is eternal. The result of David living for GOD was that his legacy of doing right before GOD was that generations following were beneficiaries of Leadership position.
This Legacy brings a new and fresh meaning to LIVE – GIVE JESUS2. Even before the physical birth of our savior David demonstrated a benefit of LIVE-GIVE JESUS.
Davids choice to Live RIGHT in the eyes of the Lord empowered him to Give to generations to follow the example to Live RIGHT in the eyes of the LORD.
We are all LEAVING A LEGACY. What LEGACY are we LEAVING?

God may know everything that we have done and may even keep record but he is more concerned with with our redemption than he is are falling away. The scripture reminds us that the writer mentions all that David had done right with a side note of his mistake, Meaning that the bulk of all he has done was more important than the sin he had committed. As Christians, we must continue to stay the course in spite of our shortcomings and walk in righteousness. God is all about redeeming us more than our punishment
I love POFW ! I love to read and hear about how one cannot serve God and man. In our reading today this is plainly stated in the successful reign and the unsuccessful reign of David and his successors. God is first and only for us to serve, we live by the word of God and we do not change or “water it down”.

Asa was not afraid to remove the things that were hinderances to the people in doing what was right in the sight of the Lord. When we stand for what we believe, even when family doesn’t understand, or are not in agreement, God will favor us as long as we are doing what is right in His sight.
Thank God for holy boldness and conviction.

God had to be first in Asa’s life.
Down to removing his own mother as Queen because of her idolatry. We cannot allow anything to between us and serving God. This must have been a difficult task for Asa yet who knew what his heritage had been. How sad when the older generation turns away from the truth of God’s word. This could have been crippling to Asa yet he did what he knew was right . Jesus be the Lord of all .
15:12 and he took away the Sodomites out of the land, and removed all the Idols that his fathers had made.

What a blessing when in a marriage
Both parents are believers, both Instruct
And everything is done in the order
God ordained.
But it’s not always like that.
The parent ( the believer) never looses hope.
Until can’t do it anymore he or she will teach and raised her children according to the word of God.
When they grow up, it’s hard and can’t decide or make choices for them…
With that said: A parent must always pray and expect 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌.

We must all look to do what is right. We may not be perfect and make mistakes, but our God is a merciful God. Even when we make a mistake, it is not the end. We can get, move forward and learn from that mistake. God has called his people to do great things and we can fulfill that calling.

Notice verse 4. “Nevertheless for David’s sake” the Lord gave him a lamp. We have not received all the evil we deserve. There is a man who stands in the gap for us. His name is Jesus. Whenever we get prideful, just remember the lamp burns because of the sacrifice of Jesus.

As followers of Christ, there will be hard decisions we have to make. These decisions show ourselves and the world that our heart and soul are fully committed to Jesus. Here Asa had to denounce his grandma of her title because she chose to worship an idol instead of God. Now reading it, that decision may seem easy but when we put ourselves in that position we remember the times we had to distance ourselves from others because our lifestyles didn’t match up. Some relationships are easy to distance yourself from but others, like some family members or friends you’ve grown up with your whole life it’s hard.
I thank God He is our friend. I thank God he gives us the strength to stand with Him. I pray we know we are never alone, that Hod is always by our side

Asa’s father, Abijam, walked in all the sins of his father, and Asa’s mother (grandmother), Ma’a-chah, made an idol and was an idol worshipper, yet the scriptures say that Asa did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD, and his heart was perfect with the LORD.
You see it’s a choice. His father and mother (grandmother) did evil, yet Asa did right in the eyes of the LORD. So you see, it doesn’t matter that your father, mother, grandmother, or other family members don’t want to live for God, BUT YOU CAN. YOU CAN CHOICE TO LIVE RIGHT BEFORE GOD.
I was also thinking about so many of our children that come to our church. They may be living in homes where parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, etc… are not living for God, BUT as long as we are teaching them the Word of God and how to live right, there is HOPE for them. HOPE that the Word will be planted and take root in them, and they will grow up LIVING RIGHT BEFORE GOD.

We all have a choice. Sure family has influence but the way you grow up doesn’t have to determine your future. Be the first to take a right step if you have to because above all else, you must save yourself.
Opportunity
4 Nevertheless for David’s sake did the Lord his God give him a lamp in Jerusalem, to set up his son after him, and to establish Jerusalem:
If God would have cut off the King because he was a sinner, it would have not given opportunity for anyone after him to rule righteously. The greatest grace that God gives us is opportunity. Opportunity to make things right, a space of time or grace while we are yet in the wrong to straighten it up before his judgment. We have to look at every opportunity that he gives us as his mercy, grace and love toward us. God knows what we are capable of and what he has instilled within us, so when he given the chance, he expects results. The fields are white, opportunity is knocking, and he has given us grace to make it right. Let us take this opportunity that is before us and prove God right.

Asa did what is right in the eyes of the Lord. What a strong and righteous person Asa was. God helped direct him and he went against his family due to their sins. You must follow God, not your peers or family. Family members and friends are people, not God. If you are being swayed in the wrong direction, don’t hesitate! Follow Jesus!

For David’s sake is the key to his sons and grandson’s reign. I believe if God did this for David, he will also do for those who serve him and keep his commandments. Then we will see sons, daughters and grandchildren who have the favor of God on their lives until they are brought back into the kingdom. He loves the soul, hates the sin, but will give our loved ones the time and chance to be saved…all because we love and serve him.
This chapter shows us that we can follow in the footsteps of our parents, or we can follow in the path that Jesus has created for us. It’s not always easy to follow the path that has not been an example, but it can be done!

We must follow the Lord and not have any Idols that will try to creep up on our lives. We must worship the Lord Jesus Christ and him alone.

The Church must seek to fulfill the Great Commission, which is to bring in the sheep fold.
“He committed the same sins as his father before him, and he was not faithful to the Lord his God, as his ancestor David had been.”

Seems like the sin trickled down the blood line. If David wasn’t after Gods own heart his sins would be just like theirs. This is a prime example that it doesn’t matter where you come from but rather who you choose to serve. Are you gonna serve God or this world. See these kings thought they had it all but in reality they were all slaves to sin. The time David felt a slave to sin he found and altar. Because a true king doesn’t give in to what the flesh wants and stays there. A true king fulfills the will.

Choose you this day whom you will serve…that scripture came to mind. It left me thinking for a min. Becuase we see his father which did evil and was not right with the Lord. And now we see his son that walked in the ways of God and did that which was right. This speaks to me that anyone can be used of God. Your past or who your ancestors are do not determine your end outcome. Yes you can be influenced by family but in the end the choice is yours to act the same way or look for a better way. Just because your parents are one way doesn’t mean you have to end up the same. You can choose to follow the paths of God and end up with blessings in your life.
He committed all the sins his father had done before him; his heart was not fully devoted to the Lord his God, as the heart of David his forefather had been.

Heard Pastor talking about true humility and true Repentance. We can humble ourselves to avoid judgement and gain mercy, but for this place to be maintained we must come to true Repentance which is a deeper dimension in the condition of our hearts. The evidence is in our actions and behaviors.

We being things to God as offering, a recognition of thanks. God doesn’t count on our offerings on who has more,it comes from the heart. In the Bible there was this one story and this women had only little but she gave it all. It was only a little bit, but God saw it as an abundance! We have to really think, are we giving are all? God just wants what we are able to give that comes from the heart. I pray tonight that you give your all, with a whole willingly heart!
5 For David had done what was pleasing in the Lord’s sight and had obeyed the Lord’s commands throughout his life, except in the affair concerning Uriah the Hittite.

When we follow the word of the Lord and listen and obey his commandments we are doing what is right and not wrong, and later on you will be blessed in a beautiful way. Never think that the Lord doesn’t see your goods and only your mistakes. The Lord knows all for he sees all, he knows we are human everyone makes mistakes and no one is perfect, the only thing that matters to the Lord is if we’re honest with him about it, do not hide things from the Lord cause you never will win that way. As his children remember to follow and obey him for he is the way to victory and a beautiful every lasting life with him! Do right not wrong… if your second guessing make sure to go to him before you do it.

Asa did what was pleasing in the lord’s sight, as his ancestor David had done.

That’s why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God.

Always seek what is right in the Lords eyes, do what He commands.

When faced with obeying the wrong footsteps of your earthly father or the righteous ones of your heavenly father which will you choose?
One would say the righteous yet over and over he saw unrighteous living and received unrighteous teaching. There were probably others told him not to follow his fathers steps yet he did.
Let us learn to obey our heavenly father in all things.
“And Asa did that which was right in the eyes of the Lord, as did David his father. And he took away the sodomites out of the land, and removed all the idols that his fathers had made.”

When you live In Obedience to the Lord. The hand of the LORD is upon you. He gives you favor with the people, …’Asa’s heart was perfect with The Lord…!’

What a great blessing to leave to you children and grandchildren! It was because David’s righteousness that Jeroboam blessed. What kind of blessings can we leave for our children?

One is not blesses when one does not do the will of the Lord.
11Asa did what was pleasing in the LORD’s sight, as his ancestor David had done. 12He banished the male and female shrine prostitutes from the land and got rid of all the idols his ancestors had made.
For the most, the son will learn from the father. This shows, everyone has to make a choice between good and evil. Asa did what was right. He learned of God and believe in God. We all have to make a choice whether to follow God or not.

Asa did eight in the sights off the Lord. He even kicked his own mother out off her previous position because her actions were not right and aligned with God. Sometimes in our own lives we have to putt people in our lives at a different level or place in our lives. Lord, help us to know when we need to remove people from our lives or even just to a different area where it does not have the same effect on us.
