Joshua 9

1And it came to pass, when all the kings which were on this side Jordan, in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great sea over against Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard thereof;

2That they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.

3And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai,

4They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up;

5And old shoes and clouted upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy.

6And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a far country: now therefore make ye a league with us.

7And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a league with you?

8And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye?

9And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of the LORD thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,

10And all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, which was at Ashtaroth.

11Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us, saying, Take victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: therefore now make ye a league with us.

12This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is mouldy:

13And these bottles of wine, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they be rent: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey.

14And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.

15And Joshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation sware unto them.

16And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them.

17And the children of Israel journeyed, and came unto their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjathjearim.

18And the children of Israel smote them not, because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against the princes.

19But all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them.

20This we will do to them; we will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we sware unto them.

21And the princes said unto them, Let them live; but let them be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation; as the princes had promised them.

22And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us?

23Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.

24And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that the LORD thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were sore afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing.

25And now, behold, we are in thine hand: as it seemeth good and right unto thee to do unto us, do.

26And so did he unto them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they slew them not.

27And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the LORD, even unto this day, in the place which he should choose.

  1. Joshua and the princes were wise in keeping their oath, even though they had been deceived in the matter. later Saul tried to exterminate the gibeoites and was punished for it (2 sam,21)

14And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.

AWAYS ASK COUNSEL OF THE LORD. THAT IS ONE OF THE PRIEST’S DUTIES…IS TO GIVE GOD’S COUNSEL

Numbers 17:19 And set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation; and give him a charge in their sight.20 And thou shalt put some of thine honour upon him, that all the congregation of the children of Israel may be obedient.21 And he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall ask counsel for him after the judgment of Urim before the Lord: at his word shall they go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he, and all the children of Israel with him, even all the congregation.22 And Moses did as the Lord commanded him: and he took Joshua, and set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation:23 And he laid his hands upon him, and gave him a charge, as the Lord commanded by the hand of Moses.

***These “deceiver’s entered into a covenant with Israel.

“therefore now make ye a league with us.”

That word “league” is the exact same word used for God’s covenant with Israel.

    league H1285
    בּרית
    berı̂yth
    ber-eeth’
From H1262 (in the sense of cutting (like H1254)); a compact (because made by passing between pieces of flesh): – confederacy, [con-]feder[-ate], covenant, league.

***Are there folks in church today that are there out of trickery and deceit?

    ANSWER….

  3. pray before you say and watch what you promise because sin could be trying to come in the back door

  4. vs 22-23. ” And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying,
Wherefore have ye beguiled us saying,
We are very far from you; enemy’s dwell among us ?
23 Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my GOD.

Dishonest cannot prevail. Don’t even think about being dishonest with GOD and to the man of GOD.
” Your sins will find you out” Num.32-23

Ther is a penalty we have to pay if we are not honest.

  5. This is the way we hew the wood…
This is the way we draw from wells…

These Gibeonites were deceitful in their plans an thought they would get out without any consequence of their deceitfulness. They were able to get a deal done with Israel because they did not seek the counsel of the Lord and in the end the oath was honored because as Bro. Garcia stated an oath is an oath.

These Gibeonites who deceived Gods people became the ones who did even the most menial tasks…

The things nobody really enjoys doing, I guess you could say they were spared to serve…

Ye stand this day all of you before the Lord your God; your captains of your tribes, your elders, and your officers, with all the men of Israel, Your little ones, your wives, and thy stranger that is in thy camp, from the hewer of thy wood unto the drawer of thy water: (Deuteronomy 29:10, 11 KJV)

I’m not sure about the significance of the order here but the hewed of the wood and the one who draws water are listed last.

  6. v22 NKJ Then Joshusa called for them and he spoke to them saying “Why have you deceived us………?”

Gen 3v13 NKJ And the Lord said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

Satan is looking for any opportunity to decieve us.
Our relationship with God must be intimate enough that we ask for and recognize HIS voice in the decisions of our lives.

  7. 16. And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them.

How quickly worldly things and people can be accepted and incorporated into the lives of believers!

These men came among them with a spirit of deceit, and were allowed to dwell among them because of a lack of parayer – if only they had prayed and asked God for guidance before accepting these strangers.

1 John 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

  8. THE VALUE OF LIFE

22 And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us?
23 Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.

On reading this chapter my first thought was those “dirty rascals”, deceiving and taking advantage of the people of God. As I continued reading, revelation and understanding began to unfold, I realized while the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite were preparing to die, the Gibeonites were preparing to live.

The Gibeonites placed a value on life, and that value is “humility”. They were willing to serve in any capacity to be saved and be apart of Life. This is the attitude that must prevail in the Church, we are all hopeless without God, and must be baptized with the Spirit of “humility” not suppressed, hidden pride.

  9. Gods reputation was spread across the land. No one could deny the awesome things that he had done. So these Hivites new they would surly die if they didnt make the league with the nation who was smoting everyone. They were scared. They didnt want a relationship with God or his people, they just didnt want to die. Israel let them live because of there league they made with the Hivites not because of what God had said or done. It looks like trouble to me.

  10. Satan is trying to decieve us everyday! We need to eat this word and stayed prayed up at all times..ipray

  11. The devil is always trying to deceive us any way he can,

I agree with Pastor Watts. These dudes were “deceivers”, but they wanted to LIVE.

WHAT DO YOU THINK GOD WOULD HAVE TOLD JOSHUA TO DO IF HE WOULD HAVE ASKED WHAT TO DO?

I”think” God would have passed judgement on them.

***These dudes were wise in the way of the world…Reminds me of a story***

There was a certain rich man, which had a steward; and the same was accused unto him that he had wasted his goods. 2 And he called him, and said unto him, How is it that I hear this of thee? give an account of thy stewardship; for thou mayest be no longer steward. 3 Then the steward said within himself, What shall I do? for my lord taketh away from me the stewardship: I cannot dig; to beg I am ashamed. 4 I am resolved what to do, that, when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses.

*** The steward then cut everyones debt in half so he would find favor when he got kicked out.

***Luke 16:8 And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light.

14 And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.

You got to be careful who you associate with, learned from your past, don’t fall down to the same trick over & over again. ALWAYS in Prayer consult with the Lord & don’t jump in haste into a decision. The result the Chosen people has to stay in alliance with this deceivers & they become a thorn on their side forever.

Thank God for His justice for what did they get in return for their deceit =

  18. The word ormah is translated 5 different ways in the authorized King James bible, wilily (as in this scripture), guile, subtilty, prudence or wisdom. As pastor said, they came wanting to live. As a people I can’t blame them who wants to die? especially if your not promised heaven.

Looking at this scripture in a spiritual sense, I begin to see how sin doesnt want to die. There are aspects we change right away when we come to church. Cities we destroy, peoples we conquer, but there is always something that will come subitly, some thought that will try to negotiate. I will be your servant, your no longer mine, but don’t destroy me.

John 8:34 NIV “everyone who sins is a slave to sin” but the time will come that sin will say, if you just keep me around, I’ll be your slave. You dont have to pay any attention to me, you don’t even have to partake of me, just dont destroy me.

  19. When you have a relationship with God you have to be able to understand his voice otherwise you can be tricked…so have an open ear and listen to God and stay by his side even if things look like there going wrong..stand strong.

  20. I know this may have nothing to do with this chapter, but i felt something in verse 8.

vs.8- And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who are ye? and from whence come come ye?

When I saw the word servants and then the sentence We are thy servants, it reminded me about serving God.

Some people may say “I am a servant of God”,but they could be tricking you just like they did Joshua.

We need to be TRUE servants of God.

DOES GOD REWARD DECEIT, LYING, CHEATING???
    (Question from lunch iBlog)

    ANSWER= NO

23Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.

This scripture reminds me of the following one,
(Mal 3:9) Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.

    The word “cursed” is

    H779
    ארר
    ‘ârar
    aw-rar’
A primitive root; to execrate: – X bitterly curse. ( to detest utterly; abhor; abominate. to curse; imprecate evil upon; denounce: He execrated all who opposed him.)

    ***NEW TESTAMENT EXAMPLES***

(Jude 1:4) For there are certain men CREPT IN unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.

***THESE DECEIVERS CREPT INTO THE CAMP OF THE LORD AND HAVE ENTERED INTO A COVENANT WITH US AND GOD…WHAT DO WE DO? WWJD?

Matthew 13:27 So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares?28 He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up?29 But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them.30 Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.

  22. Action:
vs. 4 they resorted to deception to save themselves. They sent ambassadors to Joshua, loading their donkeys with weathered saddlebags and old, patched wineskins. (NLT)

    Consequence:
vs. 23 May you be cursed! From now on you will always be servants who cut wood and carry water for the house of my God.” (NLT)

We should never resort to deception, thinking that we can get by and around God. We should however, always listen to God’s voice and do as He commands us and always seek Him to help us in decisions of our lives.

  23. There is a value in a covenat that is made between two people. It was so valuable to them that even though they were lied to they still spared their lives. God honors our efforts to keep our promises to him and to others.

  24. Be honest in everything or be cursed by the God that gave you life, breath, protection, shelter and all that you own. Remember that you don’t really “own” anything because it is all his. It is through him that we live, move and have our being.

  25. The word Hittite’s root means terror and dismay.

    The word Amorite means boasting.

The word Canaanite’s root means humiliation.

The word Perizzite’s root means unwalled, or defenseless.

The word Hivite’s root means to show.

The word Jebusite’s root means to trample.

Joshua and his men had just defeated Ai. Joshua had read the law to the people and built an altar. Immediately the enemy conspired against them. Victory was sure but the enemy was quick to assemble.

When we come out of great victory we are challenged by these things. Terror, boasting or pride, humiliation, helplessness, and the enemy wanting to tread us down.

Yet in the midst of this conflict, the people of Gibeon meaning hill people came to entice and deceive the man of God.

We must be careful that we do not allow our circumstances to cause us to make rash decisions. A covenant was signed with the enemy, and all Joshua wanted to do was to help them.

    Discernment is very important.

Solomon was faced with the entire kingdom to lead. The Lord asked him what he wanted and said he would give him anything. Solomon responded with these words.

    1 Kings 3:9 (KJV)
9 Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?

The word discern means to separate mentally (or distinguish), i.e. (general) understand :- attend, consider, be cunning, diligently, direct, discern, eloquent, feel, inform, instruct, have intelligence, know, look well to, mark, perceive, be prudent, regard, (can) skill (-ful), teach, think, (cause, make to, get, give, have) understand (-ing), view, (deal) wise (-ly, man).Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary.

    Proverbs 19:2 (KJV)
2 Also, that the soul be without knowledge, it is not good; and he that hasteth with his feet sinneth.

    Proverbs 19:2 (NCV)
2 Enthusiasm without knowledge is not good. If you act too quickly, you might make a mistake.

Think before you act. iPray before you choose.

    Proverbs 20:18 (KJV)
18 Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.

    • Hebrews 4:12 (KJV)
12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Use the word of God to discern whether friend or foe.

  26. gotta be careful what voice you are listening. Who you are hanging around with. The devil is out to destroy all and who he can.

  27. Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked : who can know it?

No one knows when someone is being deceitful, only God does. Joshua had know idea who these people were. The Hivites were desperate to live. Joshua should have seeked God and ask for guidance in this decision.

  28. I believe in this chapter it show how it pays off obeying God even though u may not know how the situation will turn out.

  29. In the passage the Israelite’s enemies knew who they were by hearing about their conquering of the other cities. As being a man or women of God the enemy should know us by name, and know just exactly what we can do to him. He should tremble and cower at the sound of our coming, we shouldn’t get full of ourselves, but with the power that comes with the holy ghost that we have. For the lord has given us the power to crush the enemies head with the heal of our foot. In the passage even though being deceived the truth came into light in the end. If the enemy has deceived you do not be shaken trust in your God and he shall bring these evil things into the light to fix them.

  30. This chapter illustrates honor. Joshua and the children of Israel were deceived and made a bond, which they were honorable in keeping their bond. However as we read the inhabitants of Gibeon were cursed for their deception. A person’s word is their bond; therefore one should be wise on what is said and/or promised so there is no deception. May the good Lord bless you all in Jesus name, Amen

  31. v15 ” And Joshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, to let them live:”

I’m so thankful that GOD is our peace
If we confess our faults, sins or weakness
HE will forgive us. HE IS FAITHFUL!
The greatest gift is GOD Himself that comes through a relationship in prayer
After GOD can trust us in relationship HE
blesses us with wisdom and understanding as in Pr. 3:13
There are many blessing in a relationship with GOD. Just think who we are in league with?
The Great GOD that the heavens of heavens cannot contain HIM 1 Kings 8: 27
    i Am Thankful!

  32. 3And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai,

    4They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up;

5And old shoes and clouted upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy.

6And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a far country: now therefore make ye a league with us.

There are many that try to imitate the true holy ghost filled saints of God. They pretend to be ambassadors of God, pretending to believe the same. They are wolves in sheeps clothing. Trying to get in among His people so they can plant their seeds of deception and lies. But beware! If we are in the Word, sensitive not only to His will, His ways but also His Voice, God will reveal those that are being deceitful.

  33. 19But all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them.

20This we will do to them; we will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we sware unto them.

Deu 23:21 When thou shalt vow a vow unto the LORD thy God, thou shalt not slack to pay it: for the LORD thy God will surely require it of thee; and it would be sin in thee.

  34. When we stray from listening to the cousel of the Lord we can easily be deceived by simple things. Joshua and his men had to fulfill the things that the promised, and so did the other men. The other men had to become servants unto the children of Isreal because of their lies. When we lie we become servants unto those which we deceive as well. It is better to ask for guidance and follow the counsel of the Lord than to try to do it all on our own.

  35. It is important to always tell the truth. Every lie will be brought to light. God knows how to reveal everything.

  36. 2That they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.

Just because you are in one accord with others does not mean you are in the right or good standing with God. These men were in accord to fight God’s people. Even in the story of the tower of babel the people were one until God stepped in. We have to be careful with who we are in accord with and unto what purpose. Let’s strive to be like the faithful in acts who were in one accord unto God’s purpose and the church was born.

  37. Verse 14 in the MSG reads…”The men of Israel looked them over and accepted the evidence. But they didn’t ask God about it.” What we see is not always what it seems. We must always be alert to discern deceit. If the People of Israel would have prayed and asked God first, they would never have gotten caught up in this deception.

  38. The Gibeonites seemed to grasp a concept that the other peoples didn’t seem to quite get on board with. The other nations banded together to stand against Israel but the Gibeonites acknowledged up-front “we can’t stand before them, we need to go another route.” They appealed via authority to have an agreement with Israel (albeit based on deception) so they could accomplish what they didn’t have power to force. When everyone else sided together against a common enemy, the Gibeonites instead ran to the enemy to side with them and hide in the shadow of the delegated “authority to live”, choosing to put more faith in Israel’s victory than their own in battle.

Many things can be pulled from this, but something that sticks out to me is “what’s your motive?” It’s not enough to check our actions, we must check our hearts as well. Selfish submission is submission, yet still selfish nonetheless.

  39. A lack of Godly council caused them to be tricked into a covenant that could nor be broken. Great story to remember when someone comes to you to negotiate a deal.

  40. vs 14 we should always ask counsel of the Lord in every decision that we make. If we don’t we can end up with a problem that we have to live with the rest of our lives.

  41. MSG 19-20 The leaders were united in their response to the congregation: “We promised them in the presence of the God of Israel. We can’t lay a hand on them now. 20 But we can do this: We will let them live so we don’t get blamed for breaking our promise.” this tells me to do what God told me and he will take care of the rest.

  42. this is a lesson for everyone never make a decision without praying about it first. Also no matter what the outside looks like we never really know what is on the inside with out letting God guide us we can make really bad choices
